  • This week we're following James, a mobile technician. He'll be working in Scotland where he's fixing, modifying and repairing EV's. However, he won't be using a diesel van to carry out the work, instead, an electric van. He'll cover a 1000 miles and 15 jobs in 6 days.

    Fantastic video James. Love the landscapes and great to see you in the day job. I think vans have to be the perfect platforms for EV's! All that flat bed area is just the perfect setup for the skateboard style design! No rear seats etc, so plenty of room for the extra weight of the battery. Then if we get more vans being produced, we could get them converted to camper vans and coachbuilt motor homes so easily!

      We must have gone to the wrong part of Scotland, in 2015; based at Loch Tummel, but travelling all around the area and up to Cairn Gorm, before heading South again to England. The weather was faultless during the two weeks at the end of September into October. The scenery is not bad, in general, and we like the people, many of whom exuded hospitality, so please don't misunderstand me. Maybe the ridiculous prices of essential items which we saw were not representative of the more populous areas? Everything seemed to be at 'rip off the tourists' prices.

    • @pauldenney7908
      @pauldenney7908 3 года назад

      @@RWBHere Scotland is about the same size as England but with only 6 million people so you don't have a big enough market to get the benefit of scale. The further North you go the worse it gets. We are in Dumfries and Galloway just over the border. Prices are the same as England, property is relatively cheap and while the countryside is not quite as spectacular as the Highlands you don't have to share it with midges in the summer.

    Great video, so about 1300 miles in 6 days, that is good to know, I often talk to trade people in vans and ask if they have thought about going electric, but they usually convince me they do too many miles for the current stock, as so many new vans only have about 100 miles range. At last there are a couple now that can do 200,which juat tips the balance.
    How much did that van cost including the conversion? It must save a fortune in diesel.

      which ones? the vauxhall vivaro is rated at 205 miles, but that seems to be a massive overestimate(the review i saw, they only got 143 miles out of it in real world usage).... the main problem with EV vans is not that many drivers have driveways to charge them... i have my company van parked out side my house, no 7kw charges on street any where near here(closest one is about 4 miles away...).

    • @SheepShearerMike
      @SheepShearerMike 3 года назад

      @@iainansell5930 Yep, the Vauxhall Vivaro (of which there are two or three variants, and this ENVQ200 (with added battery) (or the Muxan added battery to add even more range). Most tradespeople I talk to think 200 (or 140) will do them, and if not, when they stop for a Costa and grab a sandwich, at breakfast, lunch or on the way home, they can top up on a fast charger.
      I can't see many people wanting less than 100 mile range and only a slow charger, they have very limited uses.
      It is still early days yet, so give the van companies a few more years and we should have even more options.

    Yes, it can - but that comes at a cost, long charging times ... and you spend your time while waiting.
    We made a clear cut: EV only for max. 1 charge break a day and everything else are Diesel jobs ...
    Better: we usually do not charge once and switch cars to Diesel ... to save the time while the EV charges from the solar roof when not running in the local area. Also the fast charger prices have increased by 50% over the last 2 years and are ridiculous compared to Diesel even though we pay 9 Cents more since January.
    And for all the trailer tasks the usual EV sucks, no tow hook or low trailer weights unuseable to tow a rowing boat trailer for the rowing club.
    In our family we have replaced 3 gas cars by pure EV but still have 3 Diesel from Mobile Home to classic Mercedes Diesel and a gas roadster.
    We also might sell 1 EV to get a plug in hybrid cause 1 EV gets too often to the range limit and we wanted to see how the hybrid performs. And yes , we had already a Tesla S from 2019 and that was a nightmare or mess of a car and Tesla service that had no interest to fix it ... 4 times and every evening still open issues that forced us to drive again 200 km to the next Tesla center. SOLD and never a Tesla again ... the quality is not reliable and that from day 1.
    Taycan works quite well and the e-GOLF we got.
    But tough job you seem to love in all the weather conditions and lot of driving plus charging breaks ... I would go for a motor home and its warm cabin and really long range.
    Nice video !

    What I’d like to know is, is it practical to make an electric motorhome? As obviously there are going to be extra weight concerns with the battery and the weight of the cabin too.
    I’d be interested to know.

      Mercedes has done some but that did not work out very well. Do the math and you will end up in a 30 - 35 kWh consumption rate per 100 km based on a simple, unconverted Mercedes EQV that needs 40 kWh in winter. A bavarian guy had done a test drive last week over 1500 km and he could not get it below 32 kWh - without heating.
      You will need a 100 kWh battery for just 250 km of range ... and that will raise the weight a lot ... and reduce the amount you can load. Here we have a 3500 kg limit and if you go above then you will get a speed limit of 80 km / h ...
      Does not make sense ... we have replaced the room battery with a Li Ion 5 kWh power pack and replaced the gas 230V and 12 V refrigerator with a simple 230 V refrigerator that is powered by that 5 kWh battery via inverter. That works great cause the fridge need 90 kWh a year or 0,3 kWh a day ... and we have 2x 380 kWP power panels on the roof that deliver 800 kWh per year or 2 kWh per day when we travel (not in winter) ...
      But if you wanna replace a powertrain then the weigt will increase a lot - just check the Mercedes EQV and Mercedes V-Class weights ... 500 kg difference. And you will need a cabin heater with gas tank or you have to go the electrical way too but that consumes 3,5 kW per hour if you are parking or 35 kWh in 10 hours and who wants another 30 kWh pack for 5000€ more and 150 kg heavier !
      Not worth the effort ...

      @@typxxilps Agree, it's better to convert an electric van to a campervan than convert a motorhome to be electric. Motorhomes are terribly aerodynamic. The Vivaro-e 75kW or Mercedes EQV 100kWh (if money is no object) would make a very nice campervan.

    I get the point of EV's But I think if used in a fairly local area they would be more suitable . On the tasks your doing with the long distance involved . Plus the frequent stops to recharge . I can see many company's sticking with the old diesels on the grounds of efficiency 300 mile trip ? 2 stops for 45 mins or do the 300 in one hit could mean an extra job done thus better effectiveness for the company . All that is only based on my assumptions ! Are there bigger battery's available ,is it possible to fit 2 on the vehicle , Or would that make it not cost effective Open for discussion ?

    How do the economics of travelling all the way up to Scotland work? Do you wait until you’ve got several cars to do, or do your customer up there pay a bit more to cover the mileage, hotels etc?

    • @SheepShearerMike
      @SheepShearerMike 3 года назад +1

      I dare say a bit of both, or at least, that is what I do when I work away from home and stay away. Book lots of folks in, and change a little extra for hotel and travel. As my name might suggest, I shear sheep not service cars, but same difference, if you are good (and not much competition helps), people don't mind paying extra.

    Hi James great insight to your job, couple of questions, does all or just the Tesla brakes end up clogged/corroded due to lack of gripping the discs, second I heard you say you charge up with chadamo I was wondering do they not make an aftermarket fix to change to CCS

    • @Jamesandkate

      Hi bud. All brakes suffer to a certain extent, the Leaf rears are prone to this too. However, Tesla fronts are bad on occasions.

    • @MrKlawUK
      @MrKlawUK 3 года назад +1

      maybe as EVs evolve they’ll adapt to this too - regen is great, but looking after expensive brakes is also good for the customer. Maybe like OLED TVs do ‘screen burn protection’ cycling every X hours, EVs can do occasional ‘brake protection’ where they don’t use regen and use friction brakes more, to keep them exercised and healthy
