At a time in this world when the "old guys" are retiring or well...you know...nice to see someone teaching younger folks about fixing stuff. As a early 40s mechanic myself...it's great to see not only young people like Rachel here getting the work done, but women getting into the trade, need more of this type of encouragement.
I wish you'd live as the neighbour to me. I would love to come learn, probably will fall in love, but, the skills you and your father have in the field of the old tractors are astonishing. This winter, I'll start renovation of my small MF 35 gasoline tractor. And I'll think of all I learned from the girl next door 😊
Young lady you are some else. I had a Farmall 1941 when I was farming. Presently retired, I just can’t believe how knowledgeable you are, and I like watching you and the Farmall repair.
Total Knowledge extreme communication skills, not afraid to get dirty and endless beauty. I rate these videos on a 1 to 10 scale at a 20.these are the best how to I have ever seen
Thanks again - I followed your disassembly and replaced the Bendix drive in my starter and instead of making an awful noise and not engaging it works as it should. The horrible noise is gone and the Bendix engages all the time now. I also saw another video from someone else that used blocks of wood to pry the brushes back for assembly on top of a large soup/stew can :) worked like a charm ! Thanks again !
This is really what I needed, I am starting out with zero knowledge on a B that we haven't started in 2 years. Thank you so much, I wish I had wifi in my shed!
This is the best video production hands down. The clarity and the super professional speaking manor Miss Rachel uses is outstanding. I am blown away that she never seems to make a verbal mistake. PERFECT!
what a kool dad....i have a 1953 farmall super H....I finally found the owners manual....still learning how to use a voltmeter...you make everything seem easy...and thank you....one day I might be ordering parts from you guys...my father is from the upper penisula woods....he can build anything and work on everything...he is still a live he had cross cut at one time...thank you for the youtube .
I always like to keep the original component with the tractor when ever possible. The Mom and Pop starter and alternator shops that are willing to work on these. Are getting more and more scarce. This certainly shows how with a little time and few parts an original starter can be saved. You are a talented teacher/speaker. I espically thought the explanation how to orient the brushes in their holders was superb! Thanks, Gingells
Outstanding video! I have always been intimidated by starters, but after watching this, I’m pretty confident in tackling that shelf full of various Allis starters in my shop! Time to order some parts!
Another consideration as well that a lot of people sometimes overlook is yes a battery has a 12v charge but has a bad cell. For those that don't know a 12 volt battery has 6 cells (6 volt has 3 cells). Its common (particularly on older 12 volt batteries) to have a cell go bad and a owner charge the battery, stick a voltmeter on it, see 12ish volts, and say it's good. Basically the other cells are overcharged (on 12 volt battery each cell would only have to be .4 volts or so overcharged) making up for the dead cell voltage wise. What wouldn't be made up for is the lack of amperage. On a 600 CCA battery you're losing 100 CCAs of the battery. That's 17 percent of your cranking power. Really need to use a load tester on batteries to test them the right way particularly if they are older.
I agree with you, but she made it easy on the beginner without overloading them with T M I. That would be a good idea for her to have another troubleshooting video. I like my cheep Harbor Freight load tester. It has never failed on me.
First, great instructional video! It may be called something different where you're from, but I learned the parts of an electric motor as: rotor, stator, commutator, and brushes. Btw, if you're replacing the 'fields' you should see if the new fields have been properly matched. Use your ohmmeter to test in microohm range. Both should be very similar readings, ideally within 10% of each other. Love the video.
I just would like to say Very impressive, and So informative....Makes me want to go find an old tractor to rebuild , Good work and I will definitely keep your website in mind
I came looking for some nostalgia about the fabulous Ferguson 30 and 35,,, which models were So common on NZ farms in the 50s and 60s...still plenty of them around doing humble towing work. Here in Masterton we have John Deere, Deutz-Fahr, Kubota and New Holland-- all clustered in friendly competition just 4 Km from here, in this sheep farming, wine-producing region. An aside... a few months ago one 15 yr old girl i was tutoring said she wants to be a mechanic.. runs in her family... looking at her in her tall blonde elegance I said teasingly, "You can't--you'll break a nail." But good on her if she turns out anything like Rachel.
Rachel, these videos are fantastic!. I have learned soooo much from them. Please keep them coming. I have a 1953 Farmall Cub and a 1956? Farmall 200. Love those old red beasts!!!!!
great information, but a small point, we found on an M at a local fair the starter did not engage because of the step down resistor no mentioned ina this video. that can also lead to extra diagnostic time.
You make me want to go and find an old Massey similar to yours but maybe a bit smaller one I love to build old things like that. I have the itch too. Enjoy your videos slot your funny cute and darn smart young lady.good luck stay safe
Awesome video thank you very much for being there I would very much appreciate all the information I can get about your business we are trying to start a business here and conneaut Ohio buying and selling tractors and need a good place to go for information and parts so thank you very much for this video it was awesome great job dad
Very informative! So my starter spins strong but not engaging flywheel. when tested on a battery after removing it wont extend to engage the flywheel. Suggestions? Very clean inside teeth looks mint.
This appears to be the same starter as on my AC D14. I am going to "best effort" go through this repair procedure on that starter this coming weekend. Never done this type repair before. Wish me luck.
To clean corroded battery terminals, you can use baking soda, (sodium bicarbonate) and hot water, use a paint brush to brush on or just pour it over the corroded area.
great video.. my starter passed of of thous tests .. but the starter drive did not, i noticed that my starter is not the same same as the one you are working at tho, the is the same , mine have got a standard leaver , and it's got the little switch that connects up the power for the starter, my old tractor is a b414 international 1964 diesel McCormick , wonder where i could get a new drive i cant get one here don't have it ..cant order it..i have 110 tooth on the ring gear, how many teeth should i have on my driver gear?
we have a 706 frame all tractor diesel it's about a 60 model i drive thru the field stopped and shutting it off and trying to starting it back up and it didn't start we had the battery check out and thay where good and wires to where good. i used a screwdriver to jump it it was dragging a little bit after a few times it was it
Always great videos. Gives me confidence in repairs. For future reference, the contact area on the armature is a commutator not a commentator and the half moon key is a woodruff key.
Very informative video. Does it matter that the wire stud on the starter was located on the side at first but after you reinstalled the starter it was now located on the top? I thought with the way all the components were keyed that the position of the stud would not change.

I test the switch/battery the same as you, but with the starter still connected, dad turns the key, starter Motor turns or clicks, but a 12 volt reading on the starter motor connection means battery and switch are ok.
Hi Rachel. I inherited my Dad's 1947 Farmall M. The battery is a 6 volt and no longer holds a charge. If I use a 12 volt battery to start the tractor can I just go with negative ground or does the starter need to be wired differently?
There really isnt an exact specification for resistance in the field. Basically what you are looking for is a low number. If you have numbers above 100 ohms, you most likely have some wear. If it is an extremely large number or O.L. it's best to replace.

Its nice when a business that sells parts is honest about troubleshooting instead of just saying you should replace everything.

Great video! I want a copy of the cd!
I test the switch/battery the same as you, but with the starter still connected, dad turns the key, starter Motor turns or clicks, but a 12 volt reading on the starter motor connection means battery and switch are ok.
Is there a particular size driver you used to remove the bushings.
Hi Rachel. I inherited my Dad's 1947 Farmall M. The battery is a 6 volt and no longer holds a charge. If I use a 12 volt battery to start the tractor can I just go with negative ground or does the starter need to be wired differently?
Do you have a generator rebuilt video?
Can you explain the OHMs testing here a little more. Is 000 satisfactory? I’m unclear on what a “good” reading would be for the armature test
i got question on field coils, is there difference between 6 volt and 12 volt field coils?
So if the fields aren't shorted, what is the ideal ohm value for a good motor field??
There really isnt an exact specification for resistance in the field. Basically what you are looking for is a low number. If you have numbers above 100 ohms, you most likely have some wear. If it is an extremely large number or O.L. it's best to replace.

When you so “if you have no reading, that means you have an open circuit”. Does that mean if your reading is zero?

I got readings of 000.5 on everything I tested. What is a good reading?

Hi Joeli, Thanks for asking, we do not have a video pertaining to David Brown hydraulics. -Rachel
Very good work, and very very beautiful girl.
Is there any particular setting you are using on the Ohm meter at the beginning of the armature test at 7:20?
Yes, use the lowest setting (ours is ten ohms or less but they vary). You're simply trying to verify continuity.
Many thanks!
Thank you for the video
so no lubrication on reassembly?
Rachel my starter is obsolete what do I do now ?
Great video as always. Btw... where's Dan?
Thank you so much!!!
That is not how you test a battery for power. A test light is for continuity only.
Great videos.
Forgot to check that windings didn't have shorts to ground with the ohm meter.
