The best rugby player the world has ever seen, and ever will see. He is a simply the Best. Rest In Peace Joost, from your biggest supporter in New Zealand. ❤️
I'm Welsh but I've never seen a better scrum half than Joost. A big man who had speed, strength, flair and an eye for an opportunity rarely seen. Rest in peace Joost, you will always be my number one number nine. Thanks for the privilege of watching you and God bless you and yours.
I'm 5feet 10inches,yet I looked up at him.He had the most admirable of human qualities, courage. What a champion.During him time, there were champion halfbacks but his time is hard to forget because his team was always the winner, the mighty Springboks.RIP Joost, you were a legend.
As a Bok supporter, without being bias, the best scrum half in Springbok history. In international rugby language, a gifted, gutsy rugby genius. What true athlete? We will never forget Jooste Van Der Westhizen for the fantastic entertainment he delivered.
This almost brings a tear to my eye. Quite possibly the best ever number 9 the Boks have produced and maybe even the best ever scrum-half in world rugby. As they say, the game they play in heaven just got even tougher with Joost now joining that teams ranks. RIP Joost.
Love it. These documentaries are great. Giving people rare footage that would otherwise be lost to the ages. I just wish it was more documentary-like and not just highlight after highlight -- maybe with teammates and former opponents giving insight and reflecting on the player's career and personality. Another point I'd like to make is that, in my opinion, rugby back before professionalism was better than it is today -- more captivating. No shoulder pads, no over-muscled gym-rats, no powder-puff tries galore. No advertisements all over the place, and no overblown salaries either. Just grit and tuff, skilled men. Too many matches nowadays too. Years ago the matches were fewer and farther between, and every single one was a spectacle. If a guy got 50 test caps he was practically a god among men. Now, today, 50 caps is nothing. Rugby just isn't the same. I like the old uniforms too.
The best 9 ever. So strong and can kick, attack, and scored so many tries as 9. He had great vision and versatility as scrum half and elevated the position to what it is nowadays in rugby. RIP Joost because you were simply fantastic
He’s the reason why I admired South African rugby he was everything that was good about the game fleet of foot quick thinking read the game like a book he was a master of his craft
He was so elusive and smart with the ball never seen anyone like him he could do a scrum half's job and score tries. Herschel Janties ,I hope can be like him.
JVDW is just so good. I wud lik to know the length of his strides (normal) His strides look so deceptive and hides his speed nd he is very fast off the mark . What a super star halfback.
These highlights don't come close to doing him justice, the try scoring was secondary to everything else Joost did on the pitch, was one of my favourites growing up, that unrelenting competitiveness, man if you could bottle that ........
RIP Joost! - Amazing footage, Please Real Rugby make a tribute, like the ending, last 4 mins was awesome. Lets allow more people to see the legacy of the man
There have been a slew of great scrummies but i Wouldn’t have anyone else as 9 in my best 15 of all time Unstoppable. Could be an extra flank or wing. Heck theres over an HOUR of highlights of just try scoring !
So sad he couldn't grow old gracefully, to tell rugby stories to his grandchildren: "38 test tries grandpa? Come on, be real, scrum- halfs dont score tries" . And he would just smile knowingly.
the greatest scrum halfs who ever lived is as follows 1 joost van Der westhuizen 2 forie du preez 3 Gareth Edwards 4 George gregan 5 Justin Marshall 6 Nick far Jones 7 syd going
Joost was a great bok and athlete....he was the guy we feared and admired for his toughness and tenacity...a real bokie...taken by a horrible disease to early....he is remembered forever by rugby people as one of the best...and those eyes....
And considering he played against some of the other great - Nick Farr Jones, Justin Marshall, George Gregan - To makes few of many. But I agree. Joost was the greatest scrum half of all time. He’s one of those that you’d want on your team immediately - selects himself
Hi Real Rugby, thanks for an excellent channel, its bringing up some amazing memories! What about a rogues gallery with a "best of" compilation for players like Bakkies or Os?
Stephen Rubenstein Now that is not a bad idea... we have lots of videos of Bakkies, Adri Geldenhuys, Pote Fourie and the Bester brothers... we are currently expanding our library and then we'll produce some more videos. Thanks for the support!
+Giuseppe Grillea thanks for the feedback and support! We usually focus on older rugby legends as footage of them is rare, but Percy scored some great tries for the Boks, so watch this space!
No disrespect to George Gregan, but the night before a game, Joost would look forward to it, and Gregan would piss his bed... THAT is how good Joost was...
20.45 wow, what is that Eastern Province fly half doing?? Getting charged down in the pocket off a scrum and then trying to play it out from behind his own goal line, quite shocking
The best reader of a game ever, was Naas Botha... hands down. From an SA perspective, Joost came close, and Du Preez was close to Joost, if not better, but he lacked the speed Joost had. It is a true pity they forced Joost to change his game. What could have been...
Best scrum-half of all time and my favourite and hero. Stopping Jonah in the 95 final was just unreal.
The best rugby player the world has ever seen, and ever will see. He is a simply the Best. Rest In Peace Joost, from your biggest supporter in New Zealand. ❤️
@Nicholas Stoult if he his so smart why is he Irish?

My earliest memories of Joost was those chips and gathers behind the scrums... was such a potent weapon.
There is only one Joost. RIP brother. You earned it. Best scrumhalf that ever played the game.
He took the position of scrumhalf to unprecedented levels. Was a masterclass to watch.
....the days when rugby was still nice to watch
RIP Joost...I'm a Pretoria boytjie as well..will never forget you..
R.I.P Joost thanx for the memories
Le number one des 9, assurément ! Joueur hyper émouvant, touchant; joueur qui nous a dit la jeunesse !....

damn, he was fast. Comparing him to scrumhalfs today, he is way better.
Look at Dupont!
So sad he couldn't grow old gracefully, to tell rugby stories to his grandchildren: "38 test tries grandpa? Come on, be real, scrum- halfs dont score tries" . And he would just smile knowingly.
That almost brought a tear to me, so sad to hear of his passing and illness.
Great.
RIP. A true rugby legend.

These video documentaries are awesome.
Please make a video documentary about André Joubert, too.
Jouba is 95% done, we just need to do some final editing. Thanks for the support!
Thanks! I can't wait for it...
And a proper one on Henry honiball there must be more footage of him
Best 9 in my lifetime.
Personally I think Joost was the best scrumhalf in the world considering any scrumhalf from 1980 till when Joost retired from rugby.
+jdvr We totally agree with you! Joost brought the excitement and the unexpected to the game. He was a wonderful player to watch in his prime
And considering he played against some of the other great - Nick Farr Jones, Justin Marshall, George Gregan - To makes few of many. But I agree. Joost was the greatest scrum half of all time. He’s one of those that you’d want on your team immediately - selects himself
Real Rugby dupreez vs joost????
Even today 2017 he is in my humble opinion still better than any scrumhalf. Today's scrummies just sucks.
Legendary RIP 😟
RIP, Joost.
Just a great. RIP.
RIP a true great

All good! Joost was a great 7s player
To be honest I never knew 7s already started back then. Yes he was and was one of the greats.
