@@PannierLaw If you consider the longterm it really didn't matter much, the break in the case was the FBI overhearing the sale setup by sheer coincidence because they were already observing one of the involved parties for drug activity. The initial group and their incriminating book led to a dead-end in the case, and the paintings were already handed off by the time they got arrested.

Someone that following night broke into the bank quite easily: for you see while they locked down the main entrance, there was a maintenance tunnel connecting the garage to the rest of the bank. Person broke in via the now unguarded maintenance tunnel and into the bank armed to the teeth...

He shot out every possible window, bashed open every ventilation cover with a baseball bat, smashed the keypads on the vaults, broke every window, shot out every TV, cut cable lines, broke the hinges off every door, bashed executives worthless yet pretty paintings off their walls: anything he could access he destroyed, and to end it? He shot all the cameras watching him until that point.
The next day the bank agents came back to see the place in tatters, the bank had to get $5.7M spent to fix or replace everything. Guess where this all took place?

I work at an art museum and while we never had someone steal a piece, it once happened that somone hung up their own painting in one of the galleries

well, it happened before I worked there, so I don't know much about the painting, but the security guy who worked then told me that they only noticed it the next day and then they immediately took it off the wall and increased security slightly

Well tbh museums have generally tight budgets and hundreds of valuable goods so imagine if you had to assign a guard for every one of those... I do think however it should have some GENERAL security that is strong

When the Mona Lisa was stolen, the guy just walked up to it and took it off the wall and hid it under a jacket. He tried to exit out of a side door but it was locked.
By then an employee came by and saw a guy in a trench coat holding a framed painting trying to get out.
The guard unlocked the door for him and let him out.
Nobody noticed the Mona Lisa was stolen for something like 2 or 3 days, when an artist who wanted to paint a copy complained, and a bored guard went searching. Only then they realized it's gone.

I also think he was an ex-employee at that museum, The Louvre. Thats why the guard let him out when he was obviously holding a painting, he thought "oh i know this guy, he works here. Id be happy to help a co-worker"
@@TheMasterTelevision yeah, it's a great example of art imbued with importance due to hype; it's really not that great a painting but going to see it and either be disappointed or fooled in person has become an event...
That's why it's heavily guarded, but the glass is to protect the painting from exposure which could damage it. Things like someone sneezing, throwing something at it, camera flashes, etc. All those things actually contribute to deteriorating the paint and ruining the piece.
Lmao how long ago was that? I went like ten years ago. Very surprising how small the painting is and super thick glass. The crowd around the painting was crazy, you had to push your way up front to even get a good look. This wasn't some peak time either, just the normal crowd. Hard to imagine walking away with it when there's minimum 100 other tourists snapping photos and watching it. Pretty sure there was a guard nearby as well. Times have changed.

Then take the painting to baumgartner's restoration to fix the hole left by the bullet. Piece of cake

One of the cars that were used to distract the police were stolen from my step-father, whom I finally got to show this video for as he's been locked in Portugal due to Corona. He claimed they only set it on fire, but he loved the presentation and has become a fan on the channel! Due to how long it took to solve the case proper, he forgot all about it until I brought it up to him now... so it took almost 20 years but now he's laughing over the idiocy of the guys that stole his car

The hard part is not to do the sting - it's to get away with it.
And
Always confirm that the suspect has the goods before busting them - otherwise you might just get a bag full of laundry.
Also 200.000 for 4 people after 5 years (even after a couple got already into jail) + a shit load of time and effort trying to sell it.... they could have just worked a job making 10.000 bucks a year and would have come ahead. Prbly. with less time put into it, lol
@@GelberStuhl It's not 200,000$ it was 200,000 Swedish Krona, which at the time was more like 28,000$. To be fair, the painting by that point was more of a liability than an asset. They did not know how to get into contact with buyers, and the police were hot on their tail, arresting everyone involved. At that point it would be worth it just to pay someone to take it. Supply was low but demand was low too.

This is as good as theAntwerp diamond heist where the thieves defeated a world-class alarm system with a can of hair spray and trash bags to steel $100M of jewels.
