      I can relate a lot to his type of personality. The big problem when somebody’s character cares more about doing what they know in their heart is the right thing to do, knowing that there can very well be either minor or major personal consequences from following through and not playing politics, the thing that happens routinely is people that you thought had your back (and you KNOW they feel the exact same way about the matter) are actually cowards - they’ll hang you out to dry in order to save their own skin the moment they get the tiniest bit nervous (and the irony is that if there is a group standing up for something, unjust punishment is likely to not happen at all).
      Hell, I’ve even had a couple of people recruit me to help them carry out something (it wasn’t my idea at all to start the project), but then they got nervous about what potential consequences could come from it, so they had me do _ALL_ of the work (whilst being as shady as possible about it all, because they didn’t want to admit they bowed out for the longest time) and wiped their hands clean of it lmfao.
      I had known them for many years at that point, so what you find in situations like this are people’s true colors.

    • @2percentright
      @2percentright Год назад +41

      This really makes me question the idea of placing all the major electrical systems right next to each other. The chance a strike is going to rip open multiple holds is pretty much guaranteed. Distribute them across the ship. Or hell, at least above the water line

    • @attigator
      @attigator Год назад +29

      @@2percentright the issue with that is stability. Putting heavy weight towards the bottom of the boat and below the waterline supports buoyancy and stabilizes the ship from capsizing. But yeah, keep the separated would help

      @LilypondMovie Месяц назад

      @@attigatorweight distribution is a huge part of why it was set up the way it was in general, too. Odds are they couldn't have them distributed evenly across the bottom because of how the weight was distributed on top. They probably would've had to restart from the blueprints if they wanted it to have more durability / longevity. But granted these ships are designed by engineers, who generally overestimate the level of stupid in the world and design ships assuming the pilot is at least relatively competent

      There’s a documentary out there made solely of footage from passengers and the audio and video recordings from the coastguard and I highly recommend it - theres the entire conversation between Schettino and the coastguard controller and its brilliant. As a crew member on a cruise ship, it’s terrible that any of our captains would act this way and be reacting to anything like this the way he did, but the conversation is fantastic to listen to just with how together the controller had it and how he tried every trick in the book to get Schettino back on board to co-ordinate evacuation.

    One thing I can’t seem to figure out - hotel director Manrico Giampedroni did not abandon the ship. In fact, he was the very last person rescued. He broke his leg helping others escape and kept himself alive by climbing onto a table and banging a pot against the wall to be heard. He was praised as a hero in many news articles. Why was he given the second most severe sentence of any of the five officers charged? I can’t find any information about his plea deal. Thanks!

    • @jedimasterdraco6950
      @jedimasterdraco6950 Год назад +196

      Here's what I can summarize base on a quick google of his position and what we saw in the video. His position as the hotel director meant it was his responsibility to ensure that the passengers were evacuated in this scenario and since he was on the bridge at the time of the crash, that meant he was part of the initial cover-up towards the passengers that delayed the evacuation and caused some people to become trapped. He was also blamed for the chaotic nature of the evacuation.

    • @mrscientific4956
      @mrscientific4956 Год назад +95

      On Historians video, it was said Giampadroni was one of the 2 officers who had the chance to opt for community service, unlike 3 other officers who got standard jail sentences. They were shorter than what they were supposed to be anyway, so I guess it could have gone worse for him.

    The blame was entirely placed on Captain Schettino's shoulders, but there was complacency in all areas of the ship's operation, far beyond the parts that he played. What's worse is, conditions were much better aboard the Concordia than most of the Costa fleet at the time.
    The emergency generator wasn't working properly due to lack of maintenance, and the emergency pumps can actually be run from the emergency generator, but weren't tested and kept in running order either.
    Before this incident, there was a worldwide complacency towards emergency drills, to the point where nobody was really sure how the whole evacuation plan really worked. On most vessels the evacuation plans left out so many important variables that in most real incidents they wouldn't have worked anyway.

    • @nadrewod999
      @nadrewod999 9 месяцев назад +3

      Yes, but at the end of the day, the captain of a ship is responsible both for the vessel itself and for all souls onboard (hence why there's the old stereotype of a captain going down with his ship: it was their responsibility to safely get the ship to its destination, they failed, and they are "accepting responsibility"/"atoning for their mistake" by seeing the accident through to the end).
      The public would likely have been far more sympathetic with Schettino's version of events if he had actually STAYED AT THE BRIDGE, INFORMED PASSENGERS OF THE EMERGENCY SITUATION, AND COORDINATED WITH THE COAST GUARD TO SPEED UP RESCUE EFFORTS. These days, people can understand if the captain doesn't "go down with the ship" or isn't "the very last person rescued from the sinking ship", but there's still a massive difference between "a captain who puts the lives of the passengers before his own, and remains at his post until nearly the last possible moment or until he is relieved of command by the rescue team" and "a coward of a captain who runs from the bridge the moment a disaster happens, and tries to be one of the first ones to leave the ship".

      Personally, I think Schettino received a harsher punishment than was appropriate. Yeah, he was operating his vessel in a somewhat reckless manner and he did the wrong thing at almost every point following the collision, but he was not malicious. Just foolish and incompetent. He should never have been allowed to command in the first place. And while folks call him a coward for abandoning ship and shirking his responsibility to his crew and passengers, I personally think that him walking away like he did was probably the best thing for everyone. He was like a little kid running around in the middle of a house fire, clueless of what to do. His Junior officers we're also lazy and incompetent but who knows what would have happened had they not taking things in hand themselves. Schettino obviously lacked the sterner stuff required for command of a large ship and therefore also was oblivious to the responsibility that goes along with carrying passengers aboard such a vessel. As soon as things went wrong, he was useless. He enjoyed wearing the uniform and the fancy suits, socializing with the beautiful people, going balls deep in a Moldovan mistress, and probably had just enough skill and nautical training to pass exams for his ship master's certificate. But he too, like the Indonesian helmsman, was lacking in some abilities required to do the job properly, apart from being a handsome face to mingle with the customers who called him Captain. Makes me wonder how he got his master's papers in the first place. I wouldn't let him command my bass boat around the lake looking for better fishing, much less appoint him master of a large ocean-going vessel.
      All that said I've kind of got away from my original point. Francesco Schettino should not have been shouldered with all of the punishment for this tragic grounding and I think that punishment was a bit too harsh for what was essentially an accident. While a ship's Master is ultimately responsible for the safe operation of his vessel, there are plenty of others who deserve to share some of the accountability for this incident. Mainly the powers that put such a clown in the captain's chair in the first place and those who gave him an incompetent helmsman. The complacency of his officers on the bridge falls upon his shoulders as well though, he failed to set high standards to correct their deficiencies. But I don't think he deserves nearly two decades in prison for that. Costa Crociere and whatever governing body issued his master's papers bear some responsibility as well and got off with not even a slap on the hand.

    I love your intro about the engineers and how the ship actually works. I am actually a marine engineer and as far as I know the EDG situation was only the way that it was because of different regulations between countries. I know that in the US ships are required to have their EDG's like 2 or 3 decks above sea level which prevents water from shutting the EDG down. If the Costa had been a US flag ship the EDG at least wouldnt have been getting flooded as well as overheating. It's also not so much bad design as banking on the fact that the captain knows how to drive. The EDG is really only ever used to start the ship from a cold start where nothing is online. Additionally in the shipping world the higher you get in pay grade the less work you do but the more responsibility you take. The captain is the person the company gets to blame when anything went wrong basically a scapegoat even though most of the time he's literally not even on the bridge. It's a pay increase in exchange for higher potential jail time, if you don't know that as a captain then you are perfect for your position.

Shift when appropriate, handle downgrades with care, turn wide, etc. What makes you a *good* driver is how you handle when *things go wrong.* When you miss the gear, or the routing you have tries to take you under a bridge that's too low, or a mechanical error forces you to stop on the highway. That's where I think Schettino fails as a captain. The best answer to an indignant 'why does it take so long for you to upload a video?!?!' is "hey, hows about you give producing a video, JUST IN EDITING, a try. Its NOT a quick process. Ever. Period."
    That being said, as someone who has taken on editing and VFX duties for various projects in the past, your demonstration of the workflow and process of compiling assets into a coherent finished product is absolutely lovely. Dealing with people that expect every content creator to have something new every few days is like those people that gripe about taxes and business but ultimately dont understand how taxes work or what its takes to operate a business, many people just simply have no clue the workload involved with simply editing elements into a video. Nevermind all of the work that goes into acquiring those assets, and the audio capture process, and even the drafting, rewriting, fact checking, proofreading (multiple times), before even setting up the microphone..... Production is an intricate machine. Any channel that does it quickly either has an entire team at every step spreading the workload, or is producing low effort content that just needs to be dumped to a basic editing program and spliced together. In fabrication there is a saying: "You can have it fast, you can have it cheap, or you can have it made well. Pick two." So, you youngins that havent spent the time pondering the work that goes into literally everything around you, just enjoy the content that comes out and while waiting patiently for the next video show some appreciation for the fact they even get made at all.

      You have thousands of customers to brief.
      You can only run a safety briefing after everyone is aboard. People usually have giant suitcases. People usually can't deposit their luggage into their rooms until AFTER staff has just cleaned up from people exiting the ship just hours before the new customers board. Imagine trying to drill thousands of people with thousands of big suitcases up and down stairs and elevator and hallways.
      Everyone has a specific "muster station", usually marked with a letter and a number to flee to in the event of an emergency. This ensures that everyone has a place to go and that they don't all crowd around 1 lifeboat. Everyone must be aboard and have free hands to practice this maneuver.
      The drills are actually run within minutes of departure, and are well in range of rescue services before that point.
      Cruise ships all over the world have this whole process down to a science.
      Just so happens that THIS ship was wrecked within minutes of departure, and also didn't even try to call rescue services until it was far TOO late.
      It is not like putting a seatbelt on after you're on the highway. It's like smacking your mailbox before you even get on the street!

    Regardless of how much guilt Scitino may have had in causing the original accident, as soon as the accident happened, his PRIMARY job became "maintain the ship as best as possible for the lives of the passengers onboard if it can still safely travel back to port under its own power, call in for rescue if it can't, and act as the onboard coordinator for any emergency services required after the accident". Only AFTER he has verified that ALL passengers and crew have been accounted for and rescued from the ship is the captain expected to get off a damaged/sinking ship.
    The fact that he was one of the FIRST people to flee the ship (along with most of the officers) shows a complete lack of respect for the responsibility a captain has to take care of the passengers under his watch, which is why Di Falcone's phone call resonated so well with so many people.
    If Scitino had simply done his duty properly after the crash, then he could have argued his version of events with a much more lenient public, and he might have gotten a slap-on-the-wrist charge like the other officers.

    I massively respect that you're acting as a mostly impartial researcher and not some dealer of justice trying to pull up the past to chase people down with. Sure, you have your leanings, but you're not intentionally posting personal info like a call to arms. Doing that is way too common these days.

      Seeing actual news outlets do that is enraging as one of your biggest jobs as a journalist is to protect your sources, which they simply dont do and its why I think so many epople refuse to contact them when something happens just post it to social media and actually leads to alot of misinformation. I respect also the fact that IH actually corrects the record on things he may have either gotten wrong or sensationalized, somthing again we never get out of the mainstream press (as shown by the clips in this video)

    The accident itself isn't solely the captain's fault, but the bungled response to the accident is solely his fault. Crisis management is one of the most important aspects of leadership.

      The captain of the "Oceanos" cruise ship bailed too and the ship's entertainer Moss Hills pretty much took over the captain's duties and led the efforts in getting everyone off the ship safely. All 570 passengers were rescued by helicopters, Hills being the last to be plucked off the ship.💜 (Hills was also aboard the "Achilles Lauro" when it caught fire and sank).
      In the "Oceanos" sinking, the captain said he gave the orders to abandon ship and if anyone didn't do that, that wasn't his problem. The company also let him be captain of another passenger ferry afterwards until he retired.

      @@kempolar9768 In fact, the captain said when he ordered to abandon ship, it doesn't matter what time he leaves. "Abandon" is for everyone and if some people like to stay, they can. (Because he thinks some people "like to stay" on sinking ships).

      There was also a captain who abandoned ship two years after Concordia. In South Korea there was a ferry called the Sewol. This ferry had capsized and everyone on the bridge had made no attempt at contacting the about 400 passengers still on board, and just abandoned ship. The Korean coast guard wernt helping and the government was actively covering up the incident as it played out.
