So update time. Billy DID end up going to jail. He was found guilty of two counts of wire fraud in 2018, and sentenced to six years in federal prison. But on March 30, 2022, he was released early, having only spent about four years behind bars. He spent another few months in community confinement, but as of September 2022, he's fully a free man. He's recently been quoted saying that he's considering starting a new company. "Something tech-based." Keep in mind that Billy has a life-long ban on serving as the director of a public company. And he still owes ~$25 million in damages to his victims (his wages will be garnished until he pays it back. Which will probably be never). But he claims that he's going to pay it all back. Presumably with whatever get-rich-quick scheme he's cooking up.
(SIDE BAR: After Fyre Festival went down, Billy started a company called NYC VIP and started selling tickets to all sorts of VIP events. Did Billy have the tickets? Of course not. The Oscars, the Met Gala, Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, Master's Tournament, Hamilton, etc. You name it, he tried to sell it. Keep in mind, this is all while he was being investigated for fraud. He obviously got caught and charged, which possibly added to his prison sentence. But since he only got 6 years and served 4, maybe it didn't.)
EDIT: Billy is now trying to start a new service called PYRT which is supposed to be some kind of VR thing? Some people are calling it virtual Fyre Festival... I don't know. And in April of 2023, he made a cryptic post to social media claiming that Fyre Festival II is officially happening with no additional details or context. Seems like he's back at it ladies and gentlemen.
EDIT 2: August 2023, and Billy has begun selling tickets for Fyre Festival 2, which he claims will happen in the Caribbean towards the end of 2024.

Fun fact: the picture at 6:36 was taken by my (at the time) 12-year-old brother and then sold to the NY Times. The story behind it is even funnier, as he didn't even realize it was Billy getting arrested when he took the picture; he was just a curious and impulsive kid who saw a guy get led away by the FBI and saw an opportunity. It wasn't until the first few articles about Billy's arrest came out that he realized who it was.
ETA: I'm getting people doubting this story. If you search for the NY Times article 'Fyre Festival Organizer Pleads Not Guilty To Fraud Charges', you'll see my bro's name listed as the image credit.

Watch Netflix's documentary on this, you'll see Billy did indeed want to put this together as a festival, and not just scam everyone out of their money. He tried to get it going, taking personal loans and worked his ass off for a solid 2 months. However, no amount of work from an inexperienced baby is going to be able to plan something on this scale.
It's just, he REALLY wanted to get it done, and couldn't see a reason not to do it. Thus, the root of all the problems was born. When there wasn't enough cash, he made a new service to raise funds. Whether it was promising new features that cost extra or extorting his friends and investors, he always came up with extra cash seemingly out of nowhere.

Billy was an extremely ambitious man, dangerously so. He was incredibly manipulative and a sociopath, so he was great at convincing people of his ideas. He wanted this festival to be for anyone, to live the "good life" for only a couple grand. What he didn't realize is, just how much the "good life" costs.
Watch Netflix's documentary on it. You'll see, the Fyre festival DID happen, just way before it was marketed to the public.

Not sure how accurate the wiki entry is for Norman's Cay, but according to the page, the Fyre Festival was originally supposed to be hosted on it under the condition that no reference was to be made concerning its past history with Pablo Escobar. Here's a snippet from that wiki entry:
"In 2017, Billy McFarland arranged to lease the island from its owners to hold the Fyre Festival, on the strict condition that no reference be made to the Pablo Escobar connection. Promotional footage for the festival was shot on Norman's Cay, and planning for the festival went ahead. In early 2017, the video was released on social media, which advertised the island as "once owned by Pablo Escobar". The owners immediately canceled the arrangement."

I don't understand youtube's trending list sometimes.. regardless, I'm glad this made the list.

    • @TheSecondVersion

-Tumblr at least got to keep the money they stole and the organizers got away scot free
-Rainfurrest offered to pay for the damages they caused, but the hotel declined (so Rainfurrest was none the worse for wear aside from being cancelled forever)
-Meanwhile, Fyre Festival lost all its money, put the organizers in debt, and Billy is now in prison

@@TheSecondVersion please remember that Tumblr was never truly connected to Dashcon - it was created, run, and killed by users who were completely inept. Tumblr itself also took action upon learning of stolen content being used in the advertisements.

Publicly and legally worse, yes, but Rainfurrest was reported to have a higher damage report than all other cons that same year COMBINED, so Rainfurrest and Fyre take gold for being the worst in different categories.

He continued to commit fraud while he was out on bail for this case by selling fraudulent tickets to events such as the Met Gala, Burning Man and Coachella. He's delusional. Why he thought he could get away with that is beyond me. I felt the same as you, but if you actually read into how many fraudulent businesses this guy has set up in his life, all sympathy goes out the door.

"Why he thought he could get away with that is beyond me."
Because Billy was a fucking spoiled ass.
No seriously... both of his parents were real estate developers, he lived in Short Hills, NJ, pretty much were the rich people live, and attended Bucknell University... a $50,000 a year university. The guy pretty much grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth and thought he could be the next Elon Musk. Billy dropped out of Engineering and didn't even graduate.
In short, just a spoiled brat trying to get money from other spoiled brats.

Oda Swifteye I don’t think he was going for ‘con man’ he just underestimated the price and time which means he never fully calculated the cost of all this so he just ‘winged’ it, which is evident by him taking loans. His inexperience and lack of formal education in business meant he probably did things he didn’t know were illegal.

...You know having a reply come out of nowhere to a comment I made over a month ago will never get old.
So trying to recollect what the conversation was about, and what you were trying to add. My first thought was that you we're trying to win an argument by using vocabulary ripped right out of first year Accounting. I mean I'm no doctor but I do have some college under my belt.
But then rereading what I said... I realized there was no argument to begin with. Apparently despite you having access to those fancy terms, you can't read a simple single sentence. I didn't say us simple folk can figure out those expenses I said we could figure out that figuring those expenses out was an obvious first step.
Or are you for some random reason trying to argue that figuring out what you personally own of your own business and what portion others own of it is the first step? Maybe It is I misreading a sentence...
