  • F-Zero X is a futuristic racer, developed by Nintendo, and released on the N64 in 1998. The game was well-received at the time, but criticized for it's lack of detail in the graphics department.

    I too remember people criticizing this game back in the day because "The graphics don't look that great!". Okay, but it runs 60 fps, the music is great, and its a blast to play to this date. I don't care about the graphics, I care about the game and this one is in my top 10 N64 favorites.

      +Ken williams Agreed! Gameplay trumps graphics every time, and F-Zero X has it in spades. Such a wonderful game :)

      Graphics are the game. It's a visual medium. And F-Zero X looks great.

    Many fond memories of this one, playing it on an emulator with friends, and ultimately even on an actual N64. Definitely one of the most graceful games on the system!

    I'm still waiting for a new F-Zero game. The last one, F-Zero GX, on the GameCube was amazing, and even today, the graphics still look awesome.

    This game sacrifices graphics for better gameplay which was a wise decision that doesn't happen often too much today, Kudos to the developers for that.

    Lack of detail

      +Rick Valenta I did pick up Extreme G, but it will be a bit before I really sink my teeth into it and give it a proper play through. Stay tuned!

      Extreme G's boring.

    I would argue F-Zero X is one of the sharper looking N64 games. Because it sacrifices texture detail in favour of performance the end result is a game that's more pleasing to the eye and doesn't come off as a blurry mess. Also the Nintendo 64 is an old machine which basically makes playing N64 games for graphics pointless. It's the gameplay that counts.
    While F-Zero GX is my favourite racing game, X is a close second and easily my favourite N64 game.

    I don't think many N64 games have aged well, but this game looks like a lot of fun! I enjoyed the review. Thumbs up! :)

      +iluvgrapedrank Thanks! It seems Nintendo disabled all the smoothing/anti-aliasing stuff to keep the frame rate at 60. As a result, the game doesn't look like a blurry mess :)

    This is the fastest racing title I have ever played. their is no racer to date that comes close to F zero X. Also the killer heavy metal soundtrack :)

    I can only agree with this review. It is unbelievable how gamers who love racing games actually don't know this one.
    It is a pure master piece and the final pseudo-randomly-generated track is so much fun !
    There is something about this game that is unique and that was not even found in F-Zero GX (even though F-Zero GX also had something unique that no other racing game ever offered).

    AWESOME! In the right hands the n64 could do some amazing things! For some reason I am reminded of Speed Racer for the Wii which I feel is an under appreciated racing game.

    I play the Wii version of this game which looks really good in progressive scan (480p). Also, the Wii version allows me to use the GameCube controller which is a magnificent input device and far superior to the N64 controller.

      I've heard from some people that the analog stick for the N64 controller actually works really well with F-ZERO X, even though those other controllers are technically better. Also, am I seeing double?

    • @mtoad
      @mtoad 6 лет назад

      An N64 controller in good condition works wonderfully for any game. My problem with it isn't that it doesn't work well; it's that it feels like shit to use. It doesn't feel smooth at all, even lubed, and the nub is a narrow hard plastic disc.

    • @mariocraft3067

      I've only been able to use an N64 controller a few times, so I'll take your word for it.

  • @mariocraft3067

    I don't think the track designs are THAT good, but they're certainly much more intense than most other racers at the time, and even to this day. I also really like the graphics, as I consider having things like smooth framerates, smooth curves on tracks, and 30 racers (aka the technical prowess of the engine) to be stunning.

      Of all the N64 racing games I've played, F-Zero X easily has the best level design of them all.

      +Martin Sutcliffe Thanks! Yeah, F-Zero X is really good, the speed, controls, and soundtrack definitely hold up next to Sega's awesome 90's racers.

    The game's style (particularly with the track design) reminds me a lot of the Wipeout games. How would you say they compare?

    • @implantgames
      @implantgames  9 лет назад +1

      +Alexander Case Though the looks similar, they don't really play the same at all. Wipeout's controls are a lot more technical and really punishes you for making mistakes. Though I'm a big Wipeout fan, especially Wipeout 64, I think F-Zero X is the better game.

    I have to agree on the fact that this is one of if not the best racing game I've ever played. It's definitely the best f-zero on the market and I would not have any problem in saying this is totally the best game on the n64. No other racing game even comes close on the n64 in my opinion. But unlike you I found the air brakes very handy in tight turns. I think they really help with the cornering. As compared to F zero gp legend on the Gameboy Advance the Gameboy Advance game pales in comparison. When I think of fun racing games from my past this one definitely stands out. Great review ! AGREED....5/5!!!

    • @implantgames
      @implantgames  9 лет назад +1

      +Dad72hthorn Yeah, this is up there as a Top 5 racer for me, no question about it. I would say Sega Rally and Test Drive Le Mans (DC/PS2 version) are better... but that might be about it. As for the breaks, I found letting off the accelerator was more than enough to get through most of the S turns. The only time I really found it necessary was on the "hand" level on the Joker Cup. Thanks for the comment!

    • @dad7275
      @dad7275 9 лет назад +1

      +implantgames Yes I can agree with that. I honestly think the air breaks are for the tighter turns. I'm a fan of acceleration let off myself. Replay of this n64 masterpiece is exceptionally high. If you have not done it already I would like to see a review of Wipeout 64 on your channel. I guess to me that would be my second favorite on the 64.

      GP Legend's worthless. The games X should be compared to are the original and GX. I think all three are equally wonderful.

      +implantgames F-Zero GX is also only a hair less great than this one, and was for some reason developed by SEGA. Considering you enjoyed this one so much you should really give that one a chance as it's basically an upgrade to this. I'm a huge fan of these two, Wave Race/WR Blue Storm, and 1080/1080 Avalanche Snowboarding, and considering your similar tastes I feel you should really give the remaining 4 games a chance if you haven't. I only say four considering your reviews of Wave Race, and F-Zero X, hope you get to the others some day and as always thanks for the great work!

    If you think the air breaks are useless, then you're using them wrong. When mastered the air breaks are probably the most useful mechanic in the game. You have to make use of the double tap/slide attack if you want to beat master mode. That is what will keep you from drifting in tight corners at max speed.
