That "dog" was actually a wolf dog hybrid. Which is why it acts so differently from the other dogs. This really sold its performance as being more than just a dog.

I was 14 when I saw this on VHS on a cold, winter night. Alone. Will always be one of my all time favorites. Great story, cast, acting, music snd sound effects, suspense, and of course effects. Zero CGI back then, it was all practical effects and matte paintings.

This is some of the best practial effects ever done, and there was no CGI trickerie. One of my favorite movies of all time, and one that will never be recreated. The story line, the cast, the score, the enviorment, and the practical effects are all top notch. The real fear is that you wouldn't even know if you were the Thing...until you went monster.

@@Filboid2000 I did know about the older movie, hehe I have that one too. Good movie as well. This was based on a novella by John Campbell Jr. called "Who Goes There" from 1938. They tried to do a prequel in 2010 called The Thing, but it was not that good. Too much CGI, the cast was forgettable, the story was blah, and it looked too fake. They made a game to follow up with the story, it was good to a point, but not great.
I just meant there will never be another movie made that's on this level of production, quality, cast, effects, or that shock factor.

BEST SCI FI HORROR MOVIE OF ALL TIME!
Critics tore this apart when it was released, calling it "Boring, dull, a wretched excess, a great barfbag movie, and one hell of an antidote for ET", as ET came out 2 weeks after it was released.
The special make-up and character effects were done by Rob Bottin, who fell ill with a bleeding ulcer and heat exhaustion as he drank Coca Cola and ate Snickers bars everyday in order to get the special effects right.
Stan Winston was brought in for the Dog Kennel Sequence, but didn't receive any credit until the end credits as he was given "Special Thanks."
The sound of The Thing when it transforms are that of alligators, crocodiles, bears, rattlesnakes, horses, pigs squealing, and human screams played backwards or slowed down to make it sound otherworldly and terrifying.
The film was a box office and critical disappointment making $19 million dollars against a $15 million dollar budget. However it's gained a cult following overtime and has been regarded as one of the best Sci-fi Horror Thriller Films ever made, as well as being John Carpenter's best films.

The reason no one acts suspicious or unlike themselves, is because, as you heard Blair say, its a "perfect imitation". Meaning, it gets your personality, your memories, everything. Its impossible to tell without something like a blood test or catching them in the act of sabotage or assimilation. That's what is so horrifying about it. An imitation will even sell out other imitations to make itself seem more trustworthy, it's wild.

When you think about it: when MacReady was trying to get back inside Norris & Palmer were almost working together - Norris even gave away the motive to the others of what the critter was doing to them - creating paranoia among them to fight each other. - The Thing was obvious on another level when it came to intelligence in survival scenarios.

    • @FilthTribeFTP
      @FilthTribeFTP 10 дней назад

@@bouhhgz1969 absolutely spot on! It's always refreshing to see another person who doesn't just regurgitate either baseless theories that lack common sense, such as the "single cell/slow takeover" assimilation method (which if it could do so, would 100% make the violent direct takeover method totally unnecessary, since a simple brushing of paths with someone could infect them, or a close proximity sneeze/cough, like c'mon...), or those seriously tired old debunked myths (Childs' breath at the end; Mac actually having gasoline instead of booze to "test" Childs', etc... as if Bennings-Thing didn't let out a cloud of vapor as he roared, or that the Thing seriously wouldn't be able to understand the difference in taste between gas and alcohol, as if we don't also form memories of things we taste or that it perfectly imitates everything except the gag reflex 😂). So, definitely want to give you your props on knowing yer stuff! Cheers bro! 🍻

    • @FilthTribeFTP
      @FilthTribeFTP 10 дней назад

@@bouhhgz1969 also, I totally originally meant to extend upon your breakdown of that scene and say that once you've seen the movie and rewatch and can begin looking for clues, knowing Palmer and Norris were already assimilated, it makes so much sense why Palmer was instigating super hard to open the door so they could torch him. They knew he was very smart and was the biggest threat to its survival. Also, Palmer and Norris together in that area by the door, were playing Good Cop/Bad Cop, where Palmer kept sewing doubt about Windows (Then, for the second time at that point), and Norris trying to break it up and saying stuff like, "Stop! This is what it wants! It's trying to tear us apart". But then, when Mac breaks into the supply room, Palmer goes, "Supply window!", further making sure everyone knew where to attack, and even Norris follows suit by saying, "ALRIGHT! That's it! We've got NO choice now!". I just wonder if Norris-Thing ACTUALLY had a legit heart attack (as the real Norris in fact, had a heart condition, so it would've been copied exactly), or if it just purposely initiated one somehow, to try and cause a distraction. Of course, that can only be left up to interpretation. One last thing... I've got a little Easter Egg for ya, which almost everyone doesn't catch, cuz it's literally half a second... But, if you can, go watch the scene where Mac pulls the fire alarm, when the dog attacks in the kennel. You'll see a scene that cuts to the sleeping quarters hallway right after Clark says "whatever it is, it's weird and pissed off", where everyone comes out of their rooms, being woken up and confused by what's going on... Pay attention to RIGHT when it cuts to the scene, and you'll notice in that first split second, that while everyone is EXITING their rooms, Palmer was ACTUALLY already just outside of his room and was totally sneaking off to do something bad, likely sabotage or assimilate someone else, but his plans are interrupted and you see him QUICKLY turn back around before anyone notices and is obviously trying to pretend like he was ALSO just coming out of his room from being woken up. Tell me his movement and behavior in that 1 second isn't 100% suspicious AF, lol... It totally tripped me out the first time I realized it. That's what I love about this movie, you can watch it a thousand times, for years and years, and STILL catch new things! 🤘🏼

When the Thing imitates someone, it perfectly duplicates every cell with such precision than it actually retains the memories, knowledge, and personality of the individual it copies. Norris (the guy who’s chest bursts open, chopping off the doctor’s hands with its bear-trap teeth) had a bad heart, and likely a peacemaker. When the Thing took him over and perfectly imitated him, it also faithfully recreated his heart defect, but not his pacemaker, which eventually caused Norris to suffer a heart attack for real during a high-stress moment. The Thing would have been happy to hide itself in a presumably “dead” body, but it couldn’t tolerate the electro-shocks from the defibrillator and was thus forced to reveal itself. Of course, the amazing scene where Norris’ head separates from his burning body, slides onto the floor, and pulls itself away, transforming into a crab/spider with his upside-down head as its body, and tries to crawl away unnoticed, is an iconic moment! (Incidentally, at the beginning of the movie, the spaceship was flying erratically because the crew was desperately trying to fight off the Things that were aboard their vessel and causing havoc. That’s why the spaceship attempted to make an emergency landing on the nearest planet and ended up crash landing in the Antarctic. Only one of the Things as survived the crash and made it out of the ship alive, only to freeze in the ice.)

Although it may look random, it’s not entirely.
For instance, when the dog turns into an abomination, at one point it opens up and a sort of flower appears that turns into a mouth that attacks the guys. But it’s not a flower as such, the ‘petals’ are made up of dogs tongues and teeth.
So when it turns into various structures it’s groups of cells quickly trying to assume the form of one of the creatures it has absorbed. The head with the crab legs and eyestalks implies that some alien(s) it has absorbed before had those sort of legs and/or eyestalks.

If it has time the cells will work together to create a full imitation.
When it’s under attack it has to quickly decide what form to take to best survive and conquer. In spite of it having some sort of hive mind or ability to communicate, perhaps in extreme duress there’s an element of panic sets in and it cannot get all of its colony to work in entire unison.

I noticed that he touches his lips with the stick, but I think that he got infected much later because otherwise him destroying all the communication equipment and the vehicles doesn't make much sense. The thing would have wanted the helicopter to flee from there or the radio to call a rescue team to it and assimilate them. Blair must have been infected while he was alone in the shack either before or after MacReady comes to ask him aout Fuchs. I suspect that he was already a thing when MacReady comes to see him because he would have needed some time for digging that tunnel and start the construction of his ship or whatever that is.

the film makers admitted that the Doc touching the thing with the eraser and then his lips was a mistake. It was not supposed to show it infecting him. Not logical too since all infections have been shown to be quite violent. Some others were touching or touched by the dog in the beginning of the movie too without being infected, including Clarke. I think the Thing needs to be actively infecting for it to be contagious.

According to the audio commentary from John Carpenter and Kurt Russell on the bluray, they said Jed didn't need any training. He just performed on cue. That walk down the hallway was all Jed. He didn't need any coaching. That is indicative of the breed. As for who the "Thing" is at the end. A little secret, watch again and notice whose mouth cold breath was coming from. A '50's-era sci-fi classic in its own right, the original was taken to a whole new level by John Carpenter abetted by the incredible practical effects wizardry of Rob Bottin. A prequel was made in 2011 chronicling what happened at the Norwegian base but wasn't nearly as good.
Led by a world-weary Kurt Russell, Carpenter assembled a cast of terrific veteran character actors including Keith David, Richard Dysart, Wilford Brimley, David Clennon, Charles Hallahan, Donald Moffat and Richard Masur who believably inhabit their roles and ratchet up the tension by degrees. Carpenter would direct Russell in five films including "Elvis", "The Thing", "Big Trouble in Little China", "Escape From New York" and "Escape From LA". He would direct Keith David again in "They Live!"
John Carpenter is a one-man band who writes, directs, edits and scores all his films. In a rare exception, the score for "The Thing" was provided by composing great Ennio Morricone. Carpenter's body of work includes a number of pulpy classics and B-movie greats like "Assault on Precinct 13", "Halloween", "Someone's Watching Me!", "The Fog", "Escape From New York", "The Thing", "Christine", "Starman", "Big Trouble in Little China", "Prince of Darkness", "They Live!", "Memoirs of an Invisible Man", "In the Mouth of Madness", "Vampires" and "The Ward". His first film, "Dark Star", was a sci-fi horror-comedy that partially inspired "Alien"! He also wrote the screenplays for "The Eyes of Laura Mars", an American giallo, and "Black Moon Rising", a techno-thriller. His scores are instantly recognizable with their throbbing notes and he expertly uses silence and stillness to generate unbearable tension.
Wilford Brimley's Blair sabotaged the vehicles after making the discovery that there was a high probability of someone being infected and seeing the grim projection that three years would be all it would take for the Thing to spread over the Earth! He was determined to trap them there which is the same realization Macready comes to at the end. He's taken to the shack a human but, the second time they check on him, he's probably a Thing because his demeanor is so calm. The funny noises he says he was hearing must've gotten to him before he could avail himself of the noose he fashioned as an escape from its clutches! As a Thing, he was building a craft under the shed to travel to the mainland.
The Thing has absorbed countless beings including space-faring species. The knowledge to construct a craft that can take him to the mainland was absorbed from a host so it's not far-fetched that he can do this with so much metal and electronic equipment around. He also probably dug out the cavern in a non-human form. Additionally, alien engineering and propulsion principles could function in a vastly simpler way than what 20th-century humans are aware of.
My favorite non-horror moment in "The Thing" is Donald Moffat's slow-burning explosive outburst while tied to the sofa. "I know you gentlemen have been through a lot but, when you find the time, I'd rather not spend the rest of this winter TIED TO THIS F**KING COUCH!" It gets me every time.
The ambiguous ending leaves you with four possible outcomes and they're all bleak. Lol.
The best case scenario is that both Childs and Mac are human, the Thing was destroyed and the survivors DIE of hypothermia.
The other three options are that one or the other or both survivors are Things who will copy the remaining human and the rescue party as well eventually dominating the Earth.
There is a popular fan theory that Things lack eye gleam and Childs doesn't have it in that last scene. It could also be a trick of light.
There is another popular fan theory that claims Mac tests Childs by giving him a flask of kerosene instead of liquor which Childs consumes! Mac chuckles with fatalistic resignation realizing he has failed and humanity is doomed. That is, unless, he has a spare stick of dynamite he can use to blow himself up along with a now very flammable Childs! Lol.
The only sequels exist as a series of Dark Horse comics and a video game featuring John Carpenter himself as a Dr. Faraday!

(There *IS* an answer to the question if Childs or MacReady, or even no one, was infected. It's in the 2002 video game, which Carpenter said is canon)
    Never infected:
    1) Nauls, 2) Garry, 3) Fuchs, 4) Copper, 5) Clark

We like shiny new toys, but we forget that most of what makes a great film is artistic vision and an adept storytelling ability. Some of the greatest and most stunning shots I've ever seen were from the 70s. Watch anything by Andre Tarkovsky. You forget to blink his movies are so damn beautiful. Tarkovsky filming a chair for 2 hours would be more engaging than a Marvel movie. Anyway, just out here planting seeds, come what may. It’s worth reading the 1930s book this was adapted from, called Who Goes There? by John Campbell.
There was a decent movie made in the 50s also adapting it, and then about a decade ago they made a quasi prequel/remake.
This is one of the best sci-fi novella adaptations around.
Another sci-fi writer whose works have turned into a great set of films was Phillip K. Dick.
He died far too young but we owe him a debt for the fantastic cinema that came from his works.
    Major ones are:
Bladerunner (adapted from Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?)
Total Recall (adapted from We Can Remember It For You Wholesale)
Minority Report (adapted from The Minority Report)
and the very trippy A Scanner Darkly (adapted from a book of the same name).
There are many others, including The Adjustment Bureau, Screamers, Next, Paycheck, and Imposter.
Many of these are well worth watching.

I think MacReady killing the chess computer with whiskey at the start could be foreshadowing. At the end, when Childs accept the bottle of whiskey from him and swigs it, that probably told MacReady that Childs was the thing (as a human would think twice about drinking from a potential alien's bottle). So maybe MacReady was testing Childs and blew him up after the movie's end. There are other clues at the end about Childs, to do with changes of jackets, but nothing conclusive I think.

The jackets all change position on the wall in the final minutes of the film and (arguably, because it's very hard to tell colour in the orangey firelight) Childs' jacket goes from bold blue colour to either cream, beige or brown.
Also interesting how MacReady's breath is very visible in the cold at the ending while Childs' isn't. Pouring from his mouth like a steam train. Whereas Childs' breath is non existent apart from one moment when he audibly exhales. Possibly due to different lighting, but doesn't seem so.

    Except it can.
It replicated dog behavior, like jumping up and licking faces and stuff. How did it know that?
Also, the Norwegians (or Swedes) were killing each other so they obviou9sly thought it could replicate humans.
If it couldn't fake everything, it would not be a successful species.
How could it win if it takes over a human then runs around barking like a dog because it cannot figure out how to speak?
It must have the ability, or if not, then you're right, there's nothing to fear, the Thing is badly evolved and cannot possibly be a threatening apex predator.
Or, maybe they have to assume that anything that evolved to mimic other creatures can actually do it right, or would have gone extinct ages ago.
Somehow, when the Thing cells devour human cells, if those cells are brain cells, it seems to get the memories.

"...you can't replicate being a human that well..."
Why not? Remember, it's absorbing and copying every since cell in the body. Which means _also_ every cell in the _brain._ Which _could_ mean that, perhaps, this thing would have access to every one of the memories of the being it took over. It'd _know_ how the being it replicated would behave. In fact, perhaps it would _by default_ behave as the being taken over. The most _horrifying_ possibility is that those who are infected and converted are, themselves, _unaware_ that this has happened to them. They go about acting as they always do, even though their cells are the alien ones, believing themselves to be the human that once lived, and the alien organism would be watching. Then, when the alien deems necessary, and _only_ then, it'd override what the body does and make it act out of character. But the alien could always do this at some time when it isn't being watched.
Just consider that it had to have fooled people for a while at the original base (the Norwegian one), acting like whatever was infected first (perhaps a dog), but it's not like this creature would have ever _met_ a dog before. It's been frozen in ice for 100,000 years, and dogs were only domesticated about 12,000 years ago. The breed, the Alaskan Malamute, likely originated about 4500 years ago. So in order to act like a creature it's never encountered before, to make this its main method of survival, it'd have to be _very_ good at copying behavior. Even animals other than humans notice differences in behavior and don't like them.
"...I think we knew for fact that it wasn't Mac..."
Oh? How do you know? In fact, how do you know it hasn't been Mac since the beginning? Here's a couple videos arguing Mac was the _original_ human thing in the American base.
    ruclips.net/video/vc9zcJFRJZs/видео.html
    ruclips.net/video/4UBZkyPG36Q/видео.html
More realistically, if you're trying to figure it out... you won't. Carpenter, who wrote this, admits that he had no particular through-plot. It was all just random. In fact, lots of things were done in the movie to make it _impossible_ to figure out. For instance, at the start you see the dog enter a room with a silhouette of a man, and the silhouette turns. We can surmise that this was the first person turned (if not Mac). So you might think that if you can work out which actor's shadow that was, you could figure out who got turned first (as you actually tried to do). Small problem. The person whose shadow was used was an _extra,_ so not _any_ of the main cast, meaning any guess you make is wrong. Similarly, when that shadow moves in front of the door when the lights go out briefly, _that_ isn't any of the other cast members, either, but another extra.
The issue is that we have a 90 minute window into events happening over the course of about 96 hours. We can't see _most_ of what happens, so there's no way to know where anyone was at any time. The Thing has freedom to move around at will for much of that time, for hours, and it doesn't take long to sneak out, do something, and sneak back.
Your reaction of "Don't kill the dog!" followed shortly by "Kill the dog! Kill the dog!" is pretty much universal. But always awesome to see. :)
    Have a nice day!

      @@alichinoalichino2283
Suppose it's Palmer who sabotaged the blood. Palmer wanders around as Palmer all day. He has _no clue_ that he is, in fact, the Thing, that's not contained in his brain the way human brain cells encode data. As he's taking a break, he closes his eyes. The Thing cells switch over. He gets up, goes and sabotages the blood, then goes back to where he was, and returns to his break. When Palmer wakes up, the brain _continues_ to have no idea they are the Thing, nor any memory of what just happened because the Thing cells were active at the time, not the human ones. Palmer continues about his day unaware he is the Thing, and unaware he sabotaged the blood.
One interesting point in favor of my interpretation is talking. The Thing never talks. Ever. Whenever talking is happening, it's _always_ from the 'person' without any obvious sign that the Thing is in control instead. When Palmer was revealed at the blood test, he didn't make threats, he didn't tell them he'll get them, the Thing took over... and it almost seems like because it _was_ the Thing, it was _unable_ to speak.
As for why the _dog_ might act weird, keep in mind that when it was staring out the window like that... it was alone. As I said, the Thing taking over _while alone_ is just fine. In fact, in a way, taking over a dog has advantages. No one expects much of a dog in terms of behavior, so it'd be easier to hide from the far more dangerous humans. Problem is, I don't think the Thing is really that smart. Or, rather, it's no smarter than the being it inhabits. When the dog was put in the kennel, if it were _human_ it should have known that the noise would attract attention, and that attacking like that is a bad idea. _But..._ a _dog_ might well let an instinct to reproduce override caution (more so than a human does). Notice that when _humans_ were being taken over, as soon as they were mobile they tried to hide and never made a mistake like that... _after_ it got control of the brain (and thus the thinking capacity that goes with such).
      Have a nice day!

You misunderstand what I'm saying. The 'person' loses consciousness, the Thing takes over, does whatever they do, and then go back. Like werewolves. The human portion has no memory of doing anything, the Thing, though, remembers.
I _also_ think that the intelligence of the Thing is limited by the intelligence of the being it has taken over. Trying to take down all those dogs at once, attracting attention, was a dumb move, one I think most humans wouldn't make, but can _totally_ see most _dogs_ making (basically, it's reproduction, and I figure humans are more able to weigh the odds of getting caught than a dog is).
      Have a nice day!

The only reason it has the title "The Thing," is that's what the original 1950s movie called itself. It's from a short story by Joseph W. Campbell written in 1938 called, "Who Goes There?"
If you could understand Norwegian, the guy shooting at the dog completely gives the plot away.

It's never confirmed whose room the dog-thing went into. The silhouette was made using one of the film crew to keep who it was supposed to be ambiguous, just as it's also never confirmed whether or not Childs and/or Mac are Things at the end. This is a movie that has been debated for decades, but there's ultimately no "real" answer. It's ambiguous enough for you to arrive at your own conclusion and it can be right, wrong, both, or neither.

This movie still terrifies me as a concept. But let me point out something that no one notices and maybe only i do as an army medic. If it is alone with you it will lash out and absorb you, the moment any part touches you, it is the beginning of the end. This process is quite fast, but not instant, a matter of minutes to complete the process. There is another way that Fuches eluded to about the food and drink. If you swallowed a cell of the thing, it would be a deliberately slow process of absorbing you from the inside one cell of at a time to not attract attention, this could take hours or days before it hits an organ that will kill you if even a few cells are harmed, like the heart ( Norris). This means the blood test will not work if the blood in the thumb at that moment hasn't been changed yet in an infected person. The truth is they are all infected, especially after Windows used the same scalpel on everyone and never sterilized the blade, he just wiped it on his dirty clothes. The scariest part about this movie is that these men all really know everything about each other, they have been stuck with each other for awhile. So the moment one of them is absorbed, the thing knows everything it needs about everyone and how to get to them. Like Macs drinking and sharing his open bottles of booze with everyone to keep them calm and civil. I think mac realized this at the end when childs took a drink from his bottle and started laughing to himself after deciding he has to kill childs and himself.

I love this movie! Such a classic, but it unfortunately flopped on release. The only bad thing about this film is the opening sequence of showing the space ship going to Earth. That was never intended to be in the movie and originally was not in it, it was added by some dumb producer that doesn’t know how these films work and how suspense and mystery go hand in hand. Other than that, it’s a 10/10 film for sure, especially the practical effects and music/tone.

great movie but probably i shouldnt watch it as a child. That scene with Norris' head stuck with me for far too long.
I would agree that only on physical lvl things could be perfectly imitated. invasion of the body snatchers went that route exactly. but that's not important.
Some say that the first person who was taken was Norris. The guy with a stomach full of shark teeth. It was probably his shadowy silhouette when the dog sneaked into the room.
There was a scene when Blair performed an autopsy. He pointed the thing with the end of his pencil then he touched his lips with the pencil. But I believe when he smashed equipment with an axe he was still human there.Much later in a schack when he was isolated the thing finished the process or got to him. He told McCready he was heard funny noises outside.
