A New Impossible Coin
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 22 окт 2016
- I show that there's yet another impossible coin in the game, located in the huge version of Tiny-Huge Island. Specifically, there's a coin spawner there that's intended to spawn 5 coins in a horizontal line on the ground. However, this coin spawner's located under the ground, causing the most uphill coin to not load properly. In particular, this coin spawns about 49 units below the ground, triggering a failsafe that causes the coin to immediately unload. Currently, there's no known way to collect this coin.
Backstory: I had been documenting the various types of coin spawners for STROOP, since I was giving them each different names and images based on their subtype value. I had already created an image specifically for the coin spawner in THI, since I had fully expected it to have its own unique subtype for spawning exactly 4 coins, something that I knew no other coin spawner did. However, I was surprised to learn that its subtype matched that of a 5 coin spawner. I originally figured that there must be some other variable it had that allowed it to only spawn 4 coins instead of 5, but couldn't find such a variable after a quick search. The next day, it suddenly hit me: what if that coin spawner MEANT to spawn 5 coins, but we only saw 4 of them? It was the mystery goomba situation all over again. After doing more research, I found that this was in fact the case. However, I had expected this 5th coin to spawn on the death barrier way down below. But instead, the coin ended up unloading immediately after loading, a situation I didn't anticipate or understand the cause of. After having Peter look into the coin spawner's code, he explained the failsafe mechanism to me. Furthermore, he said that perhaps "part of the level got remodeled or something". This got me thinking, and after some more research, I fleshed out the hypothesis explained in the video.
The program I used in the video to show the object slots in real time is called STROOP. It's essentially an improved version of the SM64 diagnostic that I've shown previously. It's being developed primary by Dane Bouchie and myself, with help from Tyler Kehne, Peter Fedak, and Kaze Emanuar. It's not nearly done yet, but if you'd like to download what we have so far, you can do so from here: bit.ly/STROOPDownload
Additional Notes
(1) I had said that every coin line in the game has exactly 5 coins in it. However, some may try to point out exceptions to this, such as this group of coins in BitDW: i.imgur.com/21Lsdk2.png. However, formations such as that one are simply composed of multiple singleton coins placed adjacently. Those coins do not belong to a coin spawner, and do not load and unload as Mario goes close to and away from them (though they do disappear and reappear).
(2) Here's the image of the 4 coin line spawner that I had created in advance: i.imgur.com/4LmkTdM.png. I hadn't wanted it to go to waste, which is why I was so committed to determining whether the coin spawner in THI truly was a 4 coin line spawner or a 5 coin line spawner in disguise. After learning the truth, I learned that this image was never meant to be. - Игры
I think the reason is because a programmer wrote in that failsafe and wanted it to be used at least once.
That's the most brilliantly dumb thing I've ever heard.
XD
that's so simple but i would totally be willing to believe that
It was actually probably to prevent exactly what pannen showed where there was a coin that was impossible to get to without glitching.
And yet, there's a coin like that ON THE SAME MAP.
So that's why I could never unlock luigi…
The Trashiest Trash XD
The Trashiest Trash he isn't even in the game. he was scrapped during development in favor of better levels
Mario fan it was a joke
+Mario fan It's a joke, he was referring to the ridiculous and fake Luigi rumors and methods to "unlock" him
+The Trashiest Trash Don't forget the Mystery Goomba! We're *two* coins away from getting Weegee bois!!
The most mysterious part is why the ground finding system is robust enough to detect a floor partially above the coin, but only uses this to trigger a failsafe that deletes the coin instead of just putting it on the floor.
I thought the same thing
Maybe it was just easier to encode, it was unlikely that it would be used, and even then it would be off little consequence
maybe they didn't want the coins to warp to the top of the level or something
@@kylaxial why would it do that if the ground has already been detected above
@@vincenzofranchelli2201 my guess is that it’s code related to all coins. And as we know some coins are able to move (like when a box is broken or an enemy dies and the coins fly out sliding across the floor). So I’m betting they put this check in…in the event that a coin begins to clip below the floor. if it begins to do that to just despawn the coin. Now I don’t know why that would even be necessary cuz those types of coins usually disappear after a time limit anyways lol.
If I recall correctly I remember when playing sm64 sometimes the moving coins would randomly disappear before I could collect them. So this is just my guess
Maybe the real fifth coin was the friends we made along the way

Now this is REAL game theory
What the fuck hi Muggy
:o hi PKMN
Actually, it's a real game hypothesis. Lacks quite a bit of supporting evidence to be considered a theory (in the scientific sense of the word, anyway; colloquially you could call it a theory, why not).
Him saying it's a theory really annoys me.
Theory's do take allot to become a theory.
"but that's just a hypothesis... a GAME hypothesis!"
I never noticed that every line of coins in this game has five coins. That's interesting…
Year late but the reason every line of coins have 5 is because they're not placed there individually, it is actually an object that spawns five coins
Bob Something
except for like a few isolated cases, as pannen described in his miscalleneous observations video
"Err... the coin spawning vectors are not working in this section..." "What do we do sir?"
"Just leave it there is not a bug that will have a significant effect on the game" "What's the worst that will happen? A guy would make a super complex video notifing this and explaining it?" "Come on don't be silly"
I don't think most people would even notice it. SMM is such a big game and they have more important stuff to worry about than a stupid coin lol. It would be kind of taxing to have to replay every single level every time they make a small change to the game.
1:37 - that's probably the first time that coin has ever been picked up
And, sadly, it might very well be the last.
;_;7
It's not even the real coin, he just placed it there as an example. He demonstrates later in the video that he cannot collect it.
It is the real coin, he just hacked it so it wouldn't unload.

That actually sounds like a pretty good hypothesis to me, I wouldn't have thought of that.
I would love to have Pannenkoek talk to the people that made this game about all the weird shit he's found out about it. Imagine him telling Miyamoto about this and him being like "Goddamnit I told [stereotypical Japanese name] to check all the coin spawners after we finalized the course layouts!"
Izandai What if the programmer actually doesn't have a stereotypical japanese name? What if it's like... Reigan or Mari.
What I meant is that I don't really know any Japanese names. Like, if the people who made Mario were American, I would say something like "Steve" up there, but I doubt there are very many people in Japan names Steve.
Izandai Tanaka? There's a few of those types of names on wikipedia, actually. Checking that, there's "Yamada". Placeholder names or stuff. So maybe you meant generic, than stereotypical.
dont forget the goomba spawner lol
Jessy Chainé Are they still alive? I wonder if they would even remember a game they programmed 20 years ago, even if it is Super Mario 64. An interview between Pannen and them would be incredibly interesting, I'd imagine.
The story probably went something like this:
Miyamoto: I've changed my mind I want the balls to roll the other way
Programmer: But Miyamoto the game goes into production tomorrow!
Miyamoto: *Pulls lever under desk and the programmer falls into Lava*
As I said the balls roll the other way...
You do realize the phrase "I want the balls to roll the other way" is just begging to be used out of context! :O
So then a new programmer came in..what did he say?
Benjamin F. Other programmer: Why is there a hole filled with lava? (Continue the story after me)

The poor coin XD. I cant believe that there is a whole story behind there being only 4 coins on that slope! Great video!
Why is Mario 64 so deeply analyzed?
because its the easiest 3d game to break
It was made before anyone had standardized what a 3D platformer was, so on a technical level, many aspects of its engine are incredibly experimental, making it fascinating to dive into. Nintendo was trying to debug a game that there was no template for, so they had to make incredibly creative solutions to EVERYTHING.

Funnily enough there are only 4 coins in that line in the DS remake. I guess not even they noticed it.
It was probably done on purpose in the DS version to match the N64 version
Jad well thet all spawn at once and you can't place any coins one by one so... :/ idk xp
They probably wouldn't want a partially hidden coin underground anyway. I bet it works the same and I bet they noticed but they let it that way for convenience. I played SM64 a lot when I was a kid, and I swear I've never noticed that line was lacking a coin, and I bet most people didn't either.
It depends how much faithful was SM 64DS to the original coding. If it was similiar, then there may be a chance that it was accidental, otherwise no.
it's not a mistake....
when there are 5 coins there it doesn't match the path. it looks much better with 4. placing the spawner underground is more efficient than creating a 4 coin spawner.

At 0:18, you show spawner subtype values, and I can't help but think they're bit flags.
If 0x1 (0b00001, decimal 1) is set, the coins are spawned vertically. This would apply to any odd-numbered subtype, hence why 17 and 19 are vertical.
If 0x10 (0b10000, 16) is set, the coins are floating, i.e. they don't snap to the ground below them. This is why all subtypes ≥ 16 are floating.
If 0x2 (0b00010, 2) is set, the coins spawn in a ring of 8 rather than a line. This bit is set for 2, 18, and 19.
If 0x4 (0b00100, 4) is set, the coins spawn in an arrow of 8. Okay, subtype 4 is the only example of this.
Chances are, 0x8 and the rest are unused, since these are the only formations seen in the game. But what happens if you try some other unused combinations? I'm betting subtype 21 would be a vertical floating arrow, for example. Subtype 1 would probably appear to be just one coin, but in fact have five coins spawned in the same place, since it has the vertical 0x1 bit set, but not the floating 0x10 bit (if the spawner is underground, you may get less than 5 coins, naturally). Subtype 6 would combine 0x2 and 0x4, which doesn't make any sense. Either something crazy would happen, or more likely, it would just go with the first choice and be a normal ring.
Interesting thought!
You are *sob loudly* a better programmer then me.
The source you're looking for is in n64decomp's sm64 /blob/master/src/game/behaviors/coin.inc.c , under bhv_coin_formation. There is some bit twiddling going on.

how is this a meme? I thought it was the "Watch for Rolling Rocks" Video was a meme.
I saw some people on Twitter making fun of this video

It is a bit sad for all the people that actually enjoy the mechanical manipulations, but at least more people are being introduced to the channel and the idea of SM64 mechanics.
I'm not necessarily part of the new wave, but it has renewed some of my interest in running SM64 back to the days when I would visit sm64.com and watch old Pannenkoek.
For all the people making fun, I'm sure some are actually interested in this.
To be honest, I only found this channel through the rolling rocks video, but I stayed for the interesting manipulation of game mechanics.
Funny you actually see this in modern game engines, when anything from a physics prop to an entity are loaded into the world if they're loaded in outside in the void it has the same failsafe debug.
You know you about to learn something in a pancake video when the file select music starts. And you know what? I actually did.

SSDARKPIT Laura cepeda
The File Select theme really gets me in the mood of your videos.
That's a really good theory, backed up by two different coin layouts, I reckon you're spot on.
Pannen forever changed the «File Select» tune from M64's soundtrack for me. For all of us. He altered its very essence to /thinking/ music. The sheer sound of it sets our brains ablaze and ready for excessively technical, absurdly deep analysis, and somehow, you immediately know you're up for a wild ride. You smile. It's just ridiculous, but always amusing. Mario will never be the same again... and it's strangely satisfying.
5:10 Best moment. That "DUN DUN DUNNNNNN!" just really sells it.
But a line of four coins can only be four coins, how can you says It's five?
"underground coin spawners"
BlooperBro because of how this game works
Mario's de facto wealth isn't necessarily equal to the number of coins.
well, "BlooperBro"...
Well... Tj "Blooper" yoshi
Imagine that they have to throw all the Mario 64 cartridges into a desert because there's one coin left, they have to program all the game again until they got five coins on every line.

This is something I need to see to die peacefully
SacredYinZekrom Yes I was really hoping to see that slope hacked in at the end :(
SacredYinZekrom How are the boulders programmed? Also, wonder how they were supposed to turn and where theyd go next
balls are actually on a set path, the slopes are only there to make it look realistic. the balls can go uphill if you set their path coordinates to an uphill position. so hacking the ball to the right will make it go up slopeR
Kaze Emanuar Hmm, I wonder if that overturns the Slope X hypothesis... probably not, since the devastated would still want it to LOOK realistic.
I just love how you show a simple error in a game that everyone sees as bug free. Also, that hypothesis totally makes sense.
Damn, this channel is just amazing. You get me and thousands of people that just like me never ever played this game, and therefore could not care less about how much a goomba they've never stumbled upon blinks or why a coin line they never collected doesn't spawn all the intended coins, to watch and look forward to your videos with utter fascination. This is extremely difficult to accomplish and you achieved it by making your content genuinely interesting and captivating. Hats off.
On the one hand, the Slope X argument holds weight and I completely believe it really was the layout in an older build. Between the shape of the cliff (I mean, if their intent was purely to make it harder for the player to fall off, they could have used something more effective than a slight uphill) and everything, it all comes together. On the other, I'm actually not convinced that's exactly what was going on with the coins. My reasoning is that devs often use their own limitations in creative ways, and I do think it's equally likely that they simply wanted only 4 coins there. Rather than program an entirely new spawner subtype, doesn't it make sense to simply block an extra coin from spawning at all?
Older Mario games have never stuck strictly to specific coin layouts (Sometimes even spelling things out with them, such as "YOU ARE A SUPER PLAYER" in Super Mario World. It just seems strange to me that they'd deliberately limit themselves to ONLY precises formations this time, you know?
Just my two cents. Still a very interesting observation that got me thinking about the level layout in more detail!

This brings the total in course coin count to 2093, right? Also, nice find. Do you think there are more coins still left to be found?
So that means only 2091/2093 are collectable, so roughly 99,9044438270425% of the coins in the game
Actually, 2092/ 2093. I was not counting the Bowser courses, the cap courses, slide, aquarium, and rainbow courses. The 2092nd coin is under Tiny Island as explained in the video.
So you didn't count the mystery goomba... well okay :P

Quick, some one check the DS version on how the geometry is compared to the original and if they left 4 coins.
I would but I don't have my DS right now.
it still has 4 coins, probably had no idea it was originally meant to be 5
TruelyJohn64 There is no 5th coin on DS.
how about the slope x ledge remnant?
The ledge has the same shape, but it's covered in grass.
Oh there is also only 4 coins on DS version?? Its so weird how a glitch could affect a remake of a game like that! I am going to check it out myself
Turns out that exact coin failsafe is activated in the DS remake also!
I find this community so interesting. "Why do they care so much about collecting these coins and making videos about them," I ask myself. Because they can, and that's pretty cool imo.
you really need to make your own Mario 64 rom hack
Just unbind the A button in the emulator settings.
Super Koek 64: The Journey Of The A Button
The only changed thing in that hack is that there's a bomb in the lower part of BitFS
Changes in the hack:

- Make cloning an actual feature
- Return Slope X
- Make QPUs actual areas
- Have Mystery Goomba on the ground
- Have Level Select music everywhere

if you create enough lag (for instance, by cloning a very large number of objects), can you make the coin-spawner's action happen over more than 1frame? or is it always a 1f action, regardless of lag

Oh, & I think you're exactly right about the path for the spawner, that bit of cliff ajoining the grass, so much detail.
Before as you hypothesised there would have just been a straight edge down, uting in that path & slope, there is now a gap, how to fill, well, they literally just joined the verts to form that Tri, & it got filled with the cliff texture.
Probably by choice, they weren't gonna waste geometry making that bit look just as good.
Perhaps literally just being so lazy as to just place the path, fill the hole, job done cos it looks fine.
I remember going through this logic so vividly, this is blowing my mind, that some1 actually put it up, I could make a short video to demonstrate if you'd like, although, I think you completely get this.
You just made my week beter
Wow, I never imagined someone could do such a process and work to find out the reason for a coin not appearing in a game, but I recognize it is a fantastic job
Sometimes a programming mistake is a new challenge for a player...
Literally unplayable. Nintendo, halt all progress on the Switch and fix your games ASAP.
8:46 If even a frame-perfect clone can't get this coin collected, then this oughta be quite the predicament to try to figure out how to collect.
My thoughts are, that there has to be some way to time it just right to have it appear for even a single frame, knowing the global timer phenomenon, it's not exactly 1 frame per millisecond, so there has to be at least one possible frame... right? After all, it can't have the failsafe kick in on that exact moment when it spawns. If I'm correct, then there should theoretically be even a single millisecond where cloning it is possible while it exists, otherwise, it shouldn't have been possible to have it in hand in the first place.
This is all just speculation, if you have any comments or something on this, I'd like to know myself, as I'm sure pannenkoek would too
I have a theory as to why they might have left the coin spawner there. Maybe it was intentionally placed that way to test the fail-safe for the coin spawner, and after that they either didn't bother to change it or forgot about it.
imo, this video should have been uploaded on your main channel with commentary.
It already seems commentated to me?
Süshi~Vølcano I meant voice commentary

But... he was speaking???
wut? Did we all see the same video lad? haha
ElRickillero
Oh, he wasn't speaking? I guess you're right. Somehow I just remembered him speaking. .-.
Man, your knowledge of this game is unreal! Absolutely amazing.
Misplaced Coin? You're going to have to remind me about that one.
This is awesome. Thanks for the in-depth analysis and many degrees of consideration.
Good shit on changing the name dude, I sometimes got a little disappointed when it was a keok video I thought to be a koek. Great vid as usual too!
I found a new down warp in BITFS, maybe, go to the elevator, hug against the right wall when the hangable ceiling and wall meet, and press the crouch button.
ATCuber 12 already known. Also downwarps are close to useless
I really love your in-depth videos, mate
Keep up the great work and research
To think that this game came out 20 years ago and people are still dissecting it. Goes to show just how good this game is
Do you have a video on the 'misplaced coin' shown at 9:03?
I had a quick search but couldn't find anything.
the first impossible coin was also on THI right?
fuck maybe it was TTM idk
Teddy Filkin

nope it is THI gdi
Teddy Filkin fork*
Youre doing it wrong, you have to use THC
I wish I had the capacity to investigate the world around me with the acuity that you investigate 20 year old video games.
I love how old games can't be patched and people find stuff like this years after! :D Thank your for that and I have to say that I also wondered once why there are only 4 coins since I played this game like crazy and quickly realized that always 5 coins will spawn. However I didn't thought about this bec I thought the coin spawn system works differently. My guess was that someone forgot to place a 5th coin there, I never got to look so deep inside the mechanics, thank you for that!
