    The Cars "My Best Friend's Girl" guitar lesson. The next Riff of the Day uses the Catalinbread SFT overdrive for classic Ampeg tones and a Way Huge Aqua Puss to produce a slapback echo. Although "My Best Friend's Girl" is played in E, the record version appears to be in F because the tape was run faster during production. Playing along to any live version from The Cars shows you don't need to adjust your guitar. Guitarist Elliot Easton shows his rockabilly chops with this popular tune, using alternate chord positions to add variety and color to a relatively simple chord progression (E,A,B). Enjoy your Riff of the Day guitar lesson!

    Thanks for explaining the discrepancy... Why it's in F on the recording but when you see Easton playing it live he's clearly in E.

      Yessir, nice job doing it in the right tuning and key. So many places have it tabbed out in F which makes it so much harder to play imo.

    Not only spot on, but also using the telecaster, which the original song was played and recorded. A lot of guys miss that. Sure you can still pull it off using a Les Paul or whatever.... but that "twang" in the solo.. that's hard to beat. Thanks for the great video. I have never met Ric in person.. but I did meet Ben.. really nice guy (R.I.P.).

    WOW! That was a REALLY good lesson! Just like he said in the video, they play the song in the key of E when playing it live. Watch some of the videos, and you'll see it. But, the recording on the album is in F.

    • @Texy88
      @Texy88 8 лет назад +4

      +J PumpkinKing They always play it in E live; the original recording was sped up, and is about 98 cents sharp of concert pitch, so it is *almost* F-major but not quite.

  • @markowalski1
    @markowalski1 3 года назад +2

    Note: This is in Emaj, not Fmaj as in the recording. They play it in standard tuning for live performances

    The country style pickin run was easier to get up to speed using hybrid picking. Much fun jamming to this. Now to find the solo lesson.

  • @George14215
    @George14215 5 лет назад

    I've seen Elliot Easton do this live, but I'm still curious as to why he switches to the 4th position instead of staying in the open position. All the same notes are right under his hand there. But then again, I'm not Elliot Easton!

    • @George14215
      @George14215 5 лет назад

      Well there are some nice, rhythmic ghost notes that happen when you switch positions like that. So there's that.

    • @grantharrismusic
      @grantharrismusic 4 года назад +1

      It’s about changing up the voicing and getting that nice open plus fretted e on the e and b strings at the 5th fret. I’ve watched live versions and it confused the hell out of me for ages but then it dawned on me what was going on.

    • @ericld11

      ***** But not in the initial playing demonstration. He likely has to use a pick to play it slowly. He is 100% not suing a pick at the beginning because you can see him unpinch his grip several times.

      I mean sure they're trying to sell stuff so what. In reality, it makes sense for them to show you pedals and other things to help you achieve the sound you hear in your favorite songs
