Shutup & Play - guitar tutorials I’ve always been so impressed with Elliot Easton’s style and ability. I’d love to see you do a tutorial of Shake It Up. Especially that killer solo. One of my favorite Cars tunes! 🙏🏻
So happy you gave Rick a plug ! He will never go down in history as the best guitar player,,, but he did his part flawlessly and sang ! And looked cool doing it !!!! Hahaha !!! We all loved it !!!! And still do ! 😆✌💕💕💕
With no deliberate hyperbole, I cannot fault this man's abilities, knowledge, feel or dedication to the most "musical" era of guitar playing, this is my era. This is simply heaven for me, just heaven.
This is great as usual, thanks! Elliot Easton's performance on this song is just a Master Class in tasty rhythm playing and fills. Just an AWESOME guitarist who doesn't get the credit he deserves. And the solo! My all-time favorite Cars song.
Been wanting to learn that "I Will" lick for 35 years, just couldn't get it right back then. Thank you very much for showing us how it goes; I've learned something new today!
Wow! Just hearing that whole intro just took me back to when I heard that song for the first time when I was 15 years old! Sounds Great! Love It! Can’t wait to hear / watch the Solo tutorial! 👍
Brilliant lesson mate . I didn't think anyone would have taken the time to dissect Elliotts parts , and so well too . The guitarists from this era were often overlooked because there was simply so many of them that played with this sort of quality .
Kudos for a fantastic tutorial of a fabulous slong! I’m going to have to get on my looper, and see what I can do with this. Thank you so much for all of the enjoyment that you have given all of us!
Thanks Jim. FYI, I provide ALL of my lessons on a "voluntary payment" model. If you get a chance please check out my donation page. Cheers, Andy www.shutupandplay.ca/donate.html
Am late to the party, however, Andy you rock. Have been really enjoying making feeble attempts to emulate you performing some of the all time great rock and roll songs. Thank you!
Excellent demo. Elliott is a talented musical architect seamlessly combining his melodic ideas technically while making it look effortless..🎸 thank you for dissecting the song for us..
Thank you so much for this, I love this song and could never get it sound right (even slowly) - you’ve got a really nicely paced teaching style as well!
The funny thing is capo on F to play in key. A lot of people fall apart because it's tough if they are fret marker based. But it's worth pursuing just to test yourself out of the comfort zone of markers. I struggled with it but it is liberating all the same. I wish I'd learner with no markers on frets at all now!
Thankyou so much for the time and effort you put into your channel. I've only just discovered it. Simply awesome! Thanks again! I'm inspired to play again !
Fab mate It's kind of Beatles You Will on steroids. The rhythm guitar of Ocazec is underrated simple as it is. It takes minimalism, hard to teach to my young students who are keen shredders. That's good but how about learning some rhythm chips before you leap into the abyss .... ? I spent 5 years playing rhythm guitar in the band. I only realise now that it was invaluable even if I thought I was just pedalling.
Another great video! I played this song in a band years ago but did it in the key of F, did all the fills and the solo (not as accurately as this though). For the life of me, I can't remember why we didn't do it in E. Would have made my life a lot easier!
We do this song in F too. I play bass so it doesn't matter to me, but the guitar player nails every part no problem. I asked him why don't we just do it in E, wouldn't it be easier on him but he said yes it would be, but he learned it in F and has been playing it in F for so long, why bother and besides, it sound's better and more right in F which I agree with him on, so, ok, F it is.
Fun fact .... Elliot Easton, real name Elliot Steinberg, went to the same high school as Brian setzer. Age-wise I was between the two. Elliot a couple years older, and Brian a couple of years younger. I knew Elliott's brother and lived with setzer. There was rockabilly in the air back then in the town called massapequa Long Island.
My favorite cars track Elliot easton the new wave rocker with a rockabilly heart Didnt know r.t.baker produced it, but it all seems clearer now. I always knew that was the i will riff , but that is in f or at least tabs ive seen are ,could you do a vid on that track, lol plz, also a great song
Thanks andy sorry i guess i missed this lesson. So thats cool. and i guess the tabs i seen are wrong too ...it totaly make sense....thanks again bro, peace
Andy, the link to the "more information on this lesson" in the description above is broken. The one listed in the first pinned comment works. It's the other at the top. As always, awesome video.
Funny how the guitar lick in this song is very similar to the one in the Beatles "I Will" from the white album. Check it out and you'll hear the similarity instantly.
Andy - I know you are a stickler for accuracy - Rick does not play power chords on the chorus. Its a little boogie using the 'D' string 4th fret to 7th fret then back open B7. You can see Rick on multiple live versions doing it and other lessons on youtube have it ---- just saying :)
Been playing a borrowed acoustic for nearly 8 months. My God, you are so good after watching several of your videos. Very inspirational. Thanks for putting these up! wow.
A really great lesson on a really great song! Easy? Yup! BUT... Without all of the subtle nuances that you bring out, it's very bland... Really great job my friend! God bless and take care...
Wasn't sure at first, but this guys a pro! Nice job Edit- hey man, talented musicians, but we can all agree there was uncut cocaine and sometimes the notes just flowed...? Even today they might rewrite a few bars. Trye artists are never happy.
shit man it's happening again first we lose the money man and then we lose Ric... 70s and 80s Legends going away too fast..although I was surprised to find out Rick was seventy-five I thought he was about the same age as Eddie 70..😢😇like this say if there's a rock and roll heaven you know they got a hell of a band
We have their legacy. The Cars remains for me one of best pop rock bands ever. Love their work, and these lessons are still unparalleled. Pefect about of talking, mostly playing. Thanks.
Well, just read the title of the video Steven! Go to my website for all three videos I did on this tune: www.shutupandplay.ca/my-best-friends-girl--rhythm--solo.html

Ditto here bud
Elliot Easton is super underrated...one of my favorite guitarists!
me to for a so called new wave band...he kept a foot planted in the roots of rock n roll
This is great as usual, thanks! Elliot Easton's performance on this song is just a Master Class in tasty rhythm playing and fills. Just an AWESOME guitarist who doesn't get the credit he deserves. And the solo! My all-time favorite Cars song.
I’m friends with Elliot. Fantastic player and super funny dude.

That's some good guitar playing. Nice touch, spot-on and delay set nicely!
Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and playing. Fantastic lesson brother!
Brilliant lesson mate . I didn't think anyone would have taken the time to dissect Elliotts parts , and so well too . The guitarists from this era were often overlooked because there was simply so many of them that played with this sort of quality .
You are a treasure, sir.
Superbly explained with coolness too♡
It simply doesn't get better than this ! Perfect breakdown, flawless execution !
over 40 yrs. ago, this song still rocks, Cars were so talented
Kudos for a fantastic tutorial of a fabulous slong! I’m going to have to get on my looper, and see what I can do with this. Thank you so much for all of the enjoyment that you have given all of us!

I was just going to ask you to do this song - Thanks! And you got the beginning chords correct. So many people don’t get that third chord.
I enjoyed every second of that. Thank you so much. ❤
Great lessen, I used to able to pick things up but you've given me a great shortcut, thanks very much
So cool. I never really heard all these nuances in this sang. Now I got to listen with headphones.
Thank you so much for this, I love this song and could never get it sound right (even slowly) - you’ve got a really nicely paced teaching style as well!
18 dislikes I suppose there are douche bags every where on the internet. These are some of the best tutorials period.
Yes, there are douchebags everywhere, rule #1 is: don't be one of them!
You cover it so perfectly ! Many thanks !
Big Log by Robert Plant, please? Your lessons are awesome, sir!
Thank you for this, this is one of my favourite songs and this is a really great tutorial, kinda renewed my excitement about playing guitar. :)
I’m a big fan of yours. Keep up the great work. On a side note can you tell me what pickups you have in your les Paul? I dig the sound. Thanks
If memory serves, he has said that they are the Suhr Doug Aldrich signature pickups.
I really enjoy playing along with you in your lessons thanks for sharing

Sometimes simplicity sounds beautiful.
Thanks for the ultra fabulous lesson that was great
Well done! So much articulation for what sounds like a simple song!
I am getting this down bit by bit! Fun song to play.
Fab mate

Thank you. 62 year old beginner guitar player. 😂. Very well done.
Fantastic!! excellent job.....and wonderful explanations and stories........if I only had this back in '78. thanks
Another great video! I played this song in a band years ago but did it in the key of F, did all the fills and the solo (not as accurately as this though). For the life of me, I can't remember why we didn't do it in E. Would have made my life a lot easier!

Capo.
Love the blue light shimmering off your guitar. Aside from your great teaching style.
Great lesson video, thanks for posting this video!!!!!!!! It helped
I KNEW IT! I always thought the fill was virtually identical to I Will and was more than just a coincidence! Lol
Cool lesson thanks for sharing
That is superb, nothing but knowledge, cheers
Superb,,wondered for years the secrets to this solo, thank you so much !!
This one's gonna take some time. But always love your presentation and delivery. Thank you for making us all feel capable.
Beautiful playing!! Thanks
I never realized that was from I Will! That's great.
Thank you for the "E" ..."F"...explanation!
hey everybody, this is Alex Lifeson giving the tutorial. It's his channel. He does this for fun. Not a joke.
How do you know this?
😁
Man, your an amazing guitar player. Wish you would teach some country music. Current stuff.
You make it look so effortless
Would love to see you do the solo from Dirty Laundry by Don Henley
Would love to see you do a tutorial for Free 'Be my Friend',
Beautiful guitar!

Such a cool sound...!
Andy, the link to the "more information on this lesson" in the description above is broken. The one listed in the first pinned comment works. It's the other at the top. As always, awesome video.
Thanks for the heads up Darran, I appreciate that! Link should be good now. Cheers, Andy

Killer lesson
Great lesson ! Luv this jam ! Classic !
Andy - I know you are a stickler for accuracy - Rick does not play power chords on the chorus. Its a little boogie using the 'D' string 4th fret to 7th fret then back open B7. You can see Rick on multiple live versions doing it and other lessons on youtube have it ---- just saying :)
I do see what you mean in the live videos, but I don't hear that at all on the studio recording. Cheers
Andy
Could you learn how to play I’ve got a feeling by the Beatles George and John’s part that would be great thanks you do it so well
Love that Les Paul
Been playing a borrowed acoustic for nearly 8 months. My God, you are so good after watching several of your videos. Very inspirational. Thanks for putting these up! wow.
Thank you Andy!
A really great lesson on a really great song!
Easy?
Yup!
BUT... Without all of the subtle nuances that you bring out, it's very bland... Really great job my friend!
God bless and take care...
I've been performing it wrong! dang! Thanks...
Your brilliant
His brilliant what?
thank you man, great lesson!
Great!! I haven’t seen a bad video yet from this guy!!
John Fogerty ripped off this riff for rock ‘n’ roll girls
Love your stuff. This package (all vids) is great!
Superb, love it and thank you!
Is that a little fret buzz im hearing ,hmm ,prob just me. Thought id mention it.....you could make a string on a broom sound amazing tho, thanks again
It is. Guitar needs a setup.
You don't hear it through the amp. All electrics have that sound when heard acoustically.
AWESOME!! tHANK YOU MAN!! :)
Wasn't sure at first, but this guys a pro! Nice job
Edit- hey man, talented musicians, but we can all agree there was uncut cocaine and sometimes the notes just flowed...? Even today they might rewrite a few bars. Trye artists are never happy.
shit man it's happening again first we lose the money man and then we lose Ric... 70s and 80s Legends going away too fast..although I was surprised to find out Rick was seventy-five I thought he was about the same age as Eddie 70..😢😇like this say if there's a rock and roll heaven you know they got a hell of a band
Think of it this way, the longer you stay on this Earth, the more people you're going to watch leave it.
We have their legacy. The Cars remains for me one of best pop rock bands ever. Love their work, and these lessons are still unparalleled. Pefect about of talking, mostly playing. Thanks.
How come the record is in F in A440 tuning
Please do something by Don Henley, new to channel, like what I'm seeing
What type of tuner is that on the top of your guitar?
If I could ask you, what kind of tuner is that on your guitar?thank you.
There's a link to my gear page in the description box below each video. I list everything I use there. Cheers
Thank you very much. Please keep the videos up.
Just curious what amp are you using?
There's a link to my gear page in the description box below each video. I list everything I use there. Cheers
But it's in the key of F?
Some of the vocal inflection makes me think of Buddy Holly.
This was a great cover and I love all of the technique....... BUT I WATCHED THIS WHOLE THING TO SEE THE SOLO AND IT WASNT HERE!!!
Well, just read the title of the video Steven! Go to my website for all three videos I did on this tune: www.shutupandplay.ca/my-best-friends-girl--rhythm--solo.html
Yes, I Will is an influence on that fill. But I also believe Buddy Holly's Words OF Love is in there too. Even the Beatles version
1st fill @ 8:28
Sure he borrowed it from McCartney but McCartney would probably say he borrow his lick from Buddy Holly :)
liked and subbed see you tommorow teach
Your always dancing down the street, with your suede blue eyes...
Ther is last partis still hiding
Jesus Christ died for you so live for him and live
Really? You learn the way he does it by watching him? He plays everything wrong.... He's left handed. :p
