Bethany Yeiser was an honors student at the University of Southern California before she developed schizophrenia and became homeless. Today, she runs the CureSZ Foundation to help others fully recover from schizophrenia. Bethany Yeiser (@BethanyYeiser) and the CURESZ Foundation (@CURESZorg) is on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Bethany Yeiser is the founding president of the CureSZ Foundation (Comprehensive Understanding via Research and Education into SchiZophrenia) which she established jointly with Henry A. Bethany holds a bachelor’s degree in molecular biology with honors from the University of Cincinnati. Prior to becoming homeless, she published three articles in molecular biology, including a first-authored article in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Bethany began full-time college at age fifteen and transferred to the University of Southern California at seventeen. Bethany was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2007 after spending four years as a homeless person, including one year living outside in a churchyard. Made me recall how I thought the CIA was going to give me a settlement of a billion dollars for being the next Messiah. Had some pretty far out thoughts going on. Total of six months hospitalized for schizoaffective disorder. Working on my Master's in management now.
Thats awesome man, i hope to be like that I also have Schizoaffective Disorder its hard.
The only thing the CIA was going to do was laugh at you while they been watching you being in the watch list for breaking the of code of conduct. Those voices in your head are coming from stingers you target.

I was diagnosed with schizophrenia at age 37, having suffered (which I had never disclosed to anyone) from hallucinations and paranoia and social withdrawal from age 10 or before. I struggled through high school, college, an abusive marriage, and extreme confusion and deadly depression for 27 yrs without benefit of support from family, friends or doctors. Then began the hospitalizations, polypharmacy, overall decline, loss of almost everything I ever thought important. Now at 62 I have re-emerged on the other side (a slow process that consumed every waking moment) damaged and weakened but at the same time stronger and wiser in many ways. It is difficult still, but I am making peace with the understanding that my purpose is to survive another day, give hope and friendship where I can, and be grateful for the processes that saved me: medication, writing, painting, poetry, reading, and many distractions others might find unimportant in the overall scheme of things. But with mental illness you make up your own "scheme of things" as you go along and each of those days of survival become an epic conquest. Thank you, Bethany. I appreciate your willingness to share.

Were your parents smoking and drinking when you were born? I ask this because you say you had the disorder from age 10! Nicotine is a poisonous alkaloid and if a child was to breath second hand smoke it could inundate their mind especially if the child is given a poor diet!! I have found what causes schizophrenia. It’s not a disease… it’s a condition. It can be reversed!!! I would like to help!

I have so much empathy for people with this condition. I myself am diagnosed with paranoid psychosis and am symptom free due to meds. We really need to end the stigma. We are people living with these conditions, not monsters!
For every Bethany success story there is a thousand who are not given the help they need. 90% of homeless people in this country suffer from mental illness. Facilities need to be built to treat these people, give them back their dignity and give them back their life and when possible reintegrate them into society.

I'm not entirely qualified to talk on this. However, I work in a psychiatric unit in Great Britain. As far as I am aware from current study my colleagues (and myself) administer the best care. What I have seen in two years is Clozopine has a roughly 50% success rate... maybe less. Its a miracle drug but some patients are unfortunately treatment resistant.

My sister has schitzophrenia. She is homeless, addicted to drugs, and just so far gone. I dont think she has the capabilities to seek help. I always hope for her to be able to get better.

I was SO proud and excited when she said she earned her degree!! I struggled to graduate with my bachelors but can only imagine the strength that took her.
My son is also on Clozapine. It was a life saver and he is also back and fighting.. The whole world should watxh videos like this for more awareness and get rid of so many taboos.

If you need a pick me up today, i just think that is so beautiful and loving of you to care for your sons. So many people abandon their family members because of schizophrenia, its great to hear a story where that's not the case.

Reading all the comments brought me to tears because my daughter who is only 14 yrs old when she had her schizoprenia started and it really breaks my heart watching her deteriorate. Hey I would encourage to not give up hope. I believe she is being treated for her condition with medication: if yes then find a good psychiatrist and keep trying to find the proper medication until it works; If no, then the first thing to do is to find a psychiatrist and get her treated.

I wish it was easier to get someone help. My older brother was diagnosed 6 years ago and it's always the same thing when he relapses. He won't get help on his own because he doesn't think he has a problem. Me a family member cant just walk into a hospital either and say "hey do something he needs help. The state won't get involved unless he has already hurt himself or someone else. It feels like an endless cycle.
I feel you bro. My mother was diagnosed in the 80s. This never gets better even with medication.

Consistent family support is needed
My son was in and out of the mental hospital. Somehow, Idk how, they held a court and appointed a Treatment Guardian. This person is responsible for making sure he takes his meds. I help by communicating what's happening. This has helped.
Unfortunately he had to go thru the jail system. This is the very dangerous part. People with mental illness cannot bond out in this state and can end up (more often than not ) in solitary confinement. Some for months or even years.
Everyone deserves to be loved. Love people regardless of their mental or physical condition
A cousin of mine (I think 8-10 years older than me) suddenly developed schizophrenia at age 18. He already had Asperger’s so life wasn’t particularly easy for him but he was high-functioning and had a gf. He was a good person. Relatively antisocial due to his Asperger’s (usually hid in his bedroom when people came over,) so I never had a real conversation with him until I was 17. I wish I could have gotten to know him before the schizophrenia and addiction. Then literally one day, shortly after he turned 18, he started hearing voices. A slow but steady downward spiral after that. Understandably, schizophrenia drove him to alcoholism and drug addiction. That god he has very wealthy parents who can get him the best possible care. But his life is below mediocre thanks to his severe mental health issues, addictions, Asperger’s, etc. It honestly breaks my heart 💔
What advice can you give to a parent who's child with schizophrenia refuses help and won't realize they have a problem. I am devastated. My daughter left and she won't talk to me. She thinks I want to mind control her or abuse her. My own mental health is really declining because of this. I cry every day. She is my baby girl. I love her so much.
Maybe you could seek help together? If you show her that you’re diving into the dark WITH her and not just FOR her maybe she would trust you’re intentions are good and she is not alone. Talk to her and say “ your pain is my pain, as your mother I’m asking you to take my hand as we dive into a way to healing together. “ find a trauma therapist in your area or make appointments until you and your daughter feel a genuine connection with your therapist. Trust is so important here for healing. I’m not a doctor, but I have a family history of this illness and I believe this information may be helpful to you both. Wishing you nothing but the best 💕❤️

It’s so painful, just so painful... my son gets no relief from this. He’s tortured bu this illness. My beautiful son. I just want him to be healthy again. I pray your daughter also finds help. I feel your pain... I’m depressed and anxious and hopeless and fighting for him with every cell in my body... it’s such a devastating disease. The things he hears and believes... just awful
@@ricenbnsSir,it is a serious medical condition,I can understand.But,if a person suffering from schizophrenia is provided proper medical help and love and support of the family members,it is possible to bring him back to the mainstream.Keep him engaged in some useful work so that he is busy.Identify his areas of strength and encourage him to succeed in that.All the best..

My Doctor told me to give up in work and live from the social fund of Austria. Now i am just 28 and i don't know what to do with the rest of my life. I tried to write a book but my Risperidon won't let me.

I recovered from severe schizophrenia without any medication. I ignored the hallucinations and refused to believe in them. I changed all of the habits of thought not believing what I was believing. I had to entirely reprogram my mind and way of thinking. I just retired from a high security airport job after working for 30 years. I not only beat the illness, I beat those who seek to treat the illness. The things that we do affect the way that we feel. If there is a problem with the mind, it could be from the choices that you make that result in the way that you feel. If you want to know how to treat the illness, talk to someone who beat it.

It's very hard to live with this disease. Every morning I have negative symptoms and it's very hard to stay interested in a task and completing a task is a daily challenge. It's a challenge to stay committed to something and you will have days where you don't want to do anything but stay in bed. Withdrawal from family and friends and hearing voices all day. I have to give myself permission to not be ok sometimes. I also pray everyday just to get through.

My mom is homeless and my grandmas just told me yesterday that my mom has this disease and she told me what it can do to you and the voice inside of your head, she told me that the voice in her head was to do self harm witch is so bad and how much it can effect your life. I haven’t seen her in about 4 years but I wish to see her soon.

My mother has schizophrenia, she don’t like taking medication and is often delusional, living with her is hellish.
I don’t have schizophrenia but I am bipolar and suffered a psychotic break, thinking I was god. I’m happy I’m in remission

Not long ago I actually heard the word schizophrenia in an advertisement for medication on television things are changing
I too have paranoia schizophrenia I took clozapine for 10 years and did quite well then my pharmacist informed me that I was in danger with my blood count. Immediately he contacted my doctor my white blood count went down to almost 0 if I got a cold or would be around anyone who was sick I could die so he had to change my medicine I cried not knowing what would happen to me. My doctor put me on a combo of medications. I’m doing well so far.

I am really in tears lady. You are an adorable and strong human beings. My twin sister got this problem 15 years ago. Although all doctors say there is no cure for Schizophrenia but still I am hopefull that my sister gonna overcome that one day and we start our normal twin life again. Because I believe in miracle! My twin sister got it as well. She was just recently diagnosed as bipolar a week ago and had psychotic break right now. Youve been saying ur sister is fighting schizophrenia for 15 years now. But youve said ur wishing to be normal twin again. Why? Did she still not recover from her psychotic episode? Actually my sister had symptoms similar to schizophrenia like being paranoid. Im afraid she wont recover from her delusions. Can u share some of ur experience, does this psychotic break happens frequently?
@@mustachegurl1714 Actually some doctors said that because my sister got this problem at her teenage days its less likely that she becomes like her first situation and the only way to control this problem its taking pills and medicine stuff and she does not have to stop taking medicine unless she becomes worse. I dont know how old is your sister but as I remember my sister has many ups and downs between the age of 16 to 25 and after that period of time she becomes much more better but not exactly the person i knew before my 15th and still she has to continue on taking medicine. Its my suggestion that dont stop your sister to go to school and socialize with others because isolation makes her situation worse. I hope your sister overcomes and this problem does not affect your twins life :)
@@mermaidalone7826 my sister and I are 22 years old right now but I think this problem have been going On for years now bec. she had mood swings and our house are always chaotic, full of quarrels. We thought its just her personality. But by now, we discovered that its because of her illness, we didnt notice until this past month she started ignoring her hygiene and also started acting weird like going around the house for no reason and blasting music out loud. We just knew we had to go to psychiatrist when she happens to talk about it. Im afraid she will not come back.

Bethany, I read your memoir. Thank you!!! Bethany, my lovely son has been going through this for the past 10 years. It has stolen my son’s life. He’s currently at a state hospital... I feel hopeless. The doctors, I feel, don’t care or have too many patients. They get frustrated with him and I don’t understand how can psychiatric professionals be this way... I’m anxious and hurt and I don’t know what to do! I’ve suggested the use of Clozapine but because of the risks, they don’t want to prescribe it. I need someone that believes can help him... he’s 20’s have been in and out of hospitals and even jail. I can’t take this anymore... I need someone to WANT to help my son

I have treated schizophrenic people in my medical practice for 25 years. It is evident that there are medications that work: one of the recurring problems is that people believe they have been cured and cease their medications and relapse. There are three and six month depot injections that can help but are currently expensive.

My close family member is on Invega, now about to start the six month depot injections. She's done very well on it, albeit with many many years when she wasn't doing well.

My son's father had schizophrenia. I never had counseling on how to share with son father's illness due to low income plus I have social awkwardness & anxiety so pursuing avenues of help was difficult. As it turns out my son has been emotionally unstable, socially anxious, job insecure, unable to maintain relationships. He recently checked himself in to VA mental health unit for 4 days due to extreme anxiety about inability to cope with daily struggles. Not sure if he's getting help or what. No contact with him for a few weeks. Unnerving.

Hospitalizing is sometimes not bad
I got diagnosed with schizophrenia 2019... Currently taking medication... I was homeless for two days when I ran out of my job
clozapine does work because its one of if not the only and has the greatest effect on nicotinic receptors but there is a reason why its not often used and that's the severe side effects. it gave me heart failure at age 24 and Tachycardia a heartbeat resting of 188, this medication does not do much for paranoia too
its so hard to think that I can be this women. How lucky i am to not have recieved a criminal sentence when I became homeless. I fight everyday to live life and this talk is what i strive to be.

Great talk what a journey and so glad you are doing well. There is hope and life does become good again. For anybody out there who reads this and is struggling.. you can can get back or move into a better level of lifestyle. Its tough sometimes still but feed your mind with reason and science and you will overcome the worst aspects of mental illness.

It’s not a disease, its a condition. Certain events causes your life to enter into this state of mind. Don’t despair there is hope. I fought it tooth and nail without medication. Took me 29 years to work it out. It’s very tricky. It’s hard to work out because the decline is gradual. For everybody the trigger point is different. A simple thing like a diet can trigger your descent. The way out is simple. If l told you what it was your jaw will hit the ground.

About to make a RUclips channel on dealing with these sort of mental illnesses people can overcome I never really deal with this one but I still can speak on it and hopefully motivate others who are dealing with this
I am very happy for this woman. She is an outlier. Unfortunately, many of people with SMI do not fare well. It is the people that are not well, but do not have a diagnosis-because it is not that clear.
I'm finally free from HIV after having a horrible outbreak, and feel the same way you describe in
your interview. Listening to you share your overcome experience gave me the glim hope I needed to hear. I am glad that there is people like you out there who just want to help other people who are struggling with the same issues. Your words gave me the courage I need to hear today!!!

My son is on Clozapine it helps but he is still not very functional. He's on several other things and has a big appetite and is heavy. My daughter is off her meds and also homeless. We track her phone to even know where she is.
It must be a very strong gene for both of your children to have it.
Ask his doctor to prescribe Metformin and/or Ozempic. They both work really well to prevent the horrible weightgain caused by antipsychotics.

olanzapine helped me but its really after i recovered when i could see the difference and realize it was not normal and how much of a disease it is and nothing to do with our own personality

Depression and have been dealing with it since the age of 9 and I still do deal with this but what I can say as much as I feel that my life will never change and me having these issues life becomes better and better days I’ve felt that this is my fault and I deserve this I become to realize this is none of my fault this is not going to define me for who I am life becomes better and even if I’m stilling dealing with these things I can tell you all it gets better
