    Haha the red lantern doesnt scare the beast (called Nian) away, its the loud firecrackers and the colour red which does. It then evolved into the tradition of wearing red, decorating the house with red items and lighting firecrackers on the first day of the lunar new year. Loving your channel and all the awesome guests!!! Sending love from Singapore!

    I'm a Pakistani American married to a Chinese woman. We order Pakistani food way more than Chinese food, because she likes Pakistani food more than I like Chinese food. Just last night she had lamb vindaloo, chicken tikka and biryani. I like Mongolian beef when she orders Chinese. Best food from China comes from their southern province of Sichuan as it's very spicy and tasty.
    It's funny how everything they do including food has to do with some sort of superstition that usually involves wealth.

  • @catsidhe181
    @catsidhe181 2 года назад +21

    Fascinating. From the reactors' descriptions of what Pakistani food these "Chinese foods" resemble, and the pictures of those Pakistani foods you've shown, these "Chinese" foods are clearly localized versions, altered to suit local Pakistani tastes. Like, although there are types of deep fried dumplings eaten in China, dumplings are much, much more frequently eaten boiled or pan-fried, and here they are deep fried to more resemble local foods like samosas. The sweet rice balls in China are usually uncoloured, and served piping hot in the soup that they're boiled in, but here they've been altered to resemble the local sweet rice snack that Marvi described. I wonder what's the history of such Pakistani-Chinese food, is it similar to American Chinese food where migrant workers make the best of available local ingredients and adapt to local tastes, or did it evolve and merge the two culinary cultures from the long history of interactions between Pakistan and China via trade routes.
    By the way, I find it strange that you're telling them the names of Chinese foods, not in Chinese, but in English, and teaching them to wish ppl a happy Chinese New Year, not in Chinese but in English. But I guess it's impractical to expect you to learn all the languages and their pronunciations for all the international foods you show here. Your explanations of Chinese customs and believes here, as well as your explanations of other cultures, show that your resources for finding information about other cultures are somewhat limited. Still, it's admirable that you're finding and sourcing so many different foods and things from different cultures, even though you can probably do fine just getting American things, since RUclips is so heavily dominated by U.S. users. I've put in a few coins for your patreon, looking forward to seeing more from you :) Happy Chinese New Year! 新春快乐,虎年大吉!

      Re Pakistani-Chinese food, I believe it’s due to immigration from China (mainly Xinjiang) over the last century or so. Dumplings can be steamed or fried. Those appeared to be fried. A dipping sauce would have been nice to go along with them.
