In this video I restore a boat trailer that I got for free when I purchased the boat. The trailer was a galvanized steel trailer that needed a lot of love and left me stranded on the side of the road with a flat tire on my way home from picking it up!
To start I wanted to change the wheel hubs as both sides the bearings were completely ruined. I replaced the hubs with pre-greased hubs and I also put on new wheels and tires.
Next I restored the coupler and began dismantling the entire trailer. Once everything was apart I ground all the surfaces with a wire wheel and then powder coated the small parts and primed and painted the large parts with farm and implement gloss black paint from Tractor Supply.
Finally with many new and refurbished parts it came together and turned out quite good!
I hope you guys enjoy this video, much love!

I’ve decided I will be uploading the boat progress/update videos on Patreon. It’s free if you guys would like to check it out, or you can pay to buy me a 🍺. 😉
Nice job good job on the bunks too exactly what I do. The paint was ideal. Better to brush or roll than it is to spray all around fantastic results.
It would be interesting to see the final cost of the replacement parts compaired to purchasing a new trailer.
@@akafrosty6175 I spent about $500
Thanks for sharing. Wonder how long paint will hold versus hot dip galvanized. Looks great now.
Hot tip. Use the old wires to pull in the new ones.
I would have sprayed everything with cavity wax/oil inside and out to help it from future corrosion just saying from North of Newcastle 🇬🇧 😉 👍👍🍺
That was my thought also. I wouldn't be as concerned about the money spent, for me it would be the time spent doing the project.
Excellent job. One of my first trailers (for a small Whaler) had those center rollers with the axle caps. I replaced those with stainless washers and cotter pins because I wasn't confident they would stay on after repeated dunking in the brine😏. Clearly the original owner didn't wash his trailer off after salt water use. That's one solid small trailer. Subscribed!
Thanks for the tip and the sub! 🙂
Tip for running wires, buy the plastic wire loom sheath, it'll stop wires from chaffing or getting cut from pinch points and tight areas from ripping the wires. It's super cheap and goes a long way to protect the wire.
When towing, cross the safety chains under the hitch. Left chain hook to right safety hook on vehicle and right chain hook to left safety hook on vehicle.
If the trailer breaks loose, the crossed chains prevent the trailer hitch from digging into the ground.
Bingo. Noticed that too. Many people do not understand that if the trailer becomes detached that the coupler will dig into the pavement or ground if the chains aren’t crossed. The “X” acts as a cradle of that occurs.
Thanks for pointing that out.
I also came here to say this.
Always cross chains
Likewise…. This is the most important safety rules in towing a trailer.
Along these lines to help in case the chains need to catch the trailer, we put 2 quick links connecting the untwisted chains to form a basket to catch a falling trailer. U can also shorten your chains with the quick links to prevent dragging n decrease amount of drop for a trailer.
Looks 1000% better! I was expecting a series of 2 or 3 videos for such a big project. Nice of you to squeeze it in one video 🙂👍
@@MusicalBox I considered it but my longer videos tend to do better 🙂
In the process of doing this very same thing!
Thanks for the encouragement!

I hope you weathered the storms and hurricanes. Excellent res-mod.
@@grayjack5021 minimal damage 👍 thank you!
VERY impressive work! 👍
Nice job on this resto. At the beginning, I thought this was just bonkers--but you've turned a trailer some might have scrapped into a good one! Beautiful work.
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@DrRestoration this is one of those projects I'd love to see an update on a year or two just to see how it held up
Impressive video, thank you for putting in the time and energy to produce such an excellent video.
Impressive attention to detail, nice job 😊
Nice renovation, I hope all the parts are rustproof or stainless steel. Good luck
Gotta love a Jeep Gladiator! I have an Overland too, excellent choice! 🦆You did an amazing job on this trailer, very well done.
Thank you 🦆!! 🙂
Outstanding! We need more like this!
Thank you 🙂
only one thing ya left out rubber gromets on the wires on trailer lights they can rub out on the washers vary good looking job lots of work
Dayum thats a nice coupler!!
Nice video. I have a note: The coupling head bolt is not long enough. It should go through the nut at least 2x thread pitch to properly utilize the nylon locking ring. I would change it to a longer one.✌🏻
Very nice job. Very clean trailer. Thanks for bringing us along.
Thanks for watching!
Awesome work man. 🤘😎🤘
@@kyleh4745 thanks! 😃
Glad you started with the tires and bearing hubs so you would have to cover them up later on when refinishing. You took extra time on the coupler instead of just replacing it like so many other parts? Didn’t notice you measuring positions of boat support items. Were grade 8 hardware recommended or might they be too brittle for road vibrations? Should have put vinyl tubing over wires where they went thru the frame.
YAY! I was hoping you would do it. This just made my night as funny as that is. 😂
@@alainabechtel874 and your comment made mine! 🙂
A really nice job, it is unrecognisable from how you began. One piece of advice is that you should shroud the wiring with some 10 mm split shrouding.
It just looks great!
Отлично!!! Руки из плеч!!! 👍👍👍💪🔥🔥🔥
Beautiful ... except for the overspray and paint drops on those pretty new white wheels! NOOOO!! 😟😉 Who knew there were so many parts to a boat trailer! Looks good!
@@ChiefsFan62 it came off with acetone 🙂
That was VERY satisfying to watch!!!!
Fantastic! Great job! Thanks for sharing!
@@marcusmitchell1895 thank you!
Great job!🤩
Thank you! Cheers!
That was epic. Great restoration.
@@Hyperion400 thanks!
Gah daym Thor. Bustin bolts like it’s ya job.
Good job ... however, being a boat owner myself, and having to install a new wiring harness on my trailer..all I can say is that exposed wiring throughout the length of your trailer...is nothing but trouble down the road. Luckily for me, my wiring is totally enclosed within the trailer frame tubing, with only exposed wiring at the coupler and at rack tail light.
Just need the boat fixing now. 🇬🇧
I need those old boat trailer wheel hubs
Bolts must protrude through nylock nuts in order to hold properly
Nicely done
Galvanized or stainless steel hardware always for a boat trailer. Especially in saltwater.
Sehr gut gemacht. !!!
Good job. Congratulation. Luiz Paulo - Rio de Janeiro - Brasil
Beautiful job
Thank you! Cheers!
Kool nice job. Let's go fishing
Nice rebuild I see 1 teeny tiny overlook which most trailers will have is the rubber grommets for the wiring
Very good, is great job.
Very nice work
Beautiful!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Looks really good, but a few key points - 1 some of your bolts going through the nylon lock nuts are too short. You need threads showing all the way through them to work properly. Also on the springs, the non round end I believe is supposed to have a rubber isolator on it of some sort. Could be wrong, but I'm sure Ive seen those with them before. Also like most have mentioned, when towing, cross your chains under your hitch. Otherwise great video.
Nice result, and likely only twice the price of a new one. 😂
Good job
that was nice thank you for posting
Glad you enjoyed it
Hola yo creo que más que restauración fue una reconstrucción porque cambiaste muchas piezas que considero podían volver a reutilizarse. Saludos y quedó muy bien el trabajo.
Buy,a new trailer, and do some fishing, probably get a season worth! 😂
Nice job
Perfeito!!! Ficou nova de novo!!!
Thank you 💙
Nice job
Thank you! Cheers!
Pay attention to metal edges, metal must be clean and smooth for paint to last.
When installing new lights paint reflective surfaces in white or Alluminium paint.
That´s a top job.
💪👍💪🌟 VERY NICE JOB
The only thing that I saw that could have been done differently would be to install rubber grommets in the metal pieces that the wiring ran through. Other than that, great job.👍
Should have painted the u bolts as well, to protect the galv longer. Coupling bolts not only are too short but should have been galv too, and the little dog chains are way too light to use as safety chains on a boat trailer- especially carrying a fibreglass boat. Even if those staples were marine stainless, they wont hold long in that wood - use galv tek screws. If you screw an earth to the trailer, or even the light housing, slather the drilled hole with mastic or silicone to stop the bare metal rusting- most important for earth connections because they'll be the first to go bad. Best to not earth the trailer at all but run an earth wire straight to the plug. Here in Australia we use 7 pin trailer plugs with earth going to it directly.
Most excellent restoration! Looks like it's ready for another 100 years. Appreciate the hard work and fine editing. Sub'd for more!
@@gforcekaras glad you enjoyed it!
You should cross your safety chains so if the hitch does fail the chains act as a saddle to hold the trailer
Excellent restoration. Turn down the sand flow to stop choking and spitting on your sandblast rig.
Just make a wet sandblaster using a pressure cleaner- more powerful and you can use it outside because they are much cleaner than a dry one. No sand bouncing back all over you.
I would cross the safety chains when pulling the boat trailer and boat. I would have run a ground wire to each light assembly, terminate them in a water proof box at the tung with the ground wire from the vehicle in the water proof box.
It looks better than the one in my yard. Owner was driving by when the trailer folded at the tongue.
When using nyloc nuts, you need to have a few threads visible of the bolt when tightened. The bolts you used to fasten the coupler are too short. The nuts can come loose easily
Very good
Show de bola 🎉🎉🎉
That square plate where the hub axles bolts onto looks rusted too thin near the 4 holes on both sides for the axles to be bolted back on.
I think a boat trailer should have a shock absorber installed with the coupler/ball hook that hooks onto the vehicle's towbar
Excellent video. No drama or gestures or unnecessary comments. There are so many other videos that sound and look like mexican novelas or like those two clowns from CNN (cuomo and lemmon).
Awesome. Me personally would think it would look cool the frame different color than the powder coated parts. Wonder how much money was saved compared to buying new trailer?
i can smell the rust dust from here
All new now 🎉
Hopefully you and the new trailer made it through Milton ok
@@gohamm34652 we made it through with minimal damages, thank you!
Great video! The new bolts holding the tongue on don’t seem long enough for the nylon locking nut to catch the nylon part. Maybe I’m wrong?
You’re kidding yourself if you think that’s going to last. Get a torch, cut off ALL the old crap and replace with new. Use stainless hardware, and get a single leaf spring. You can’t wash out the salt and crap that gets in between those leaf springs, which leads to premature failure. Buy some sealed LED lights and wire those up all brand new. Unless of course you plan on selling it right away to make some money. Otherwise, do it right, or do it twice!
@@Mike-hb4pc 🤷🏻♂️😂
When threading cables through metal you should have rubber grommets inserted in the hole to protect the cable. PETER LINDOP UK.
Very nice work, I always enjoy watching your videos. I agree with the other comment, is the boat next?
I’m not sure yet
Nice. I would of bought a new coupler they do wear out.
Never mind a new one would probably cost moreand that one is as good as new now
Dear Dr. Restoration,
I have a small project, and from all your videos, you're good at what you do.
I have been gifted a B&H oil lamp but the tank is split and I don't know a lot about an oil lamp for the flame spreader, I would love to send this to you and see if you can fix it but if you can't that's fine you could just throw it away and I would find another option to put into the base, but would you be interested in doing it?
😂good“s🎉‼️
22:34 the sweat 😧
@@jmcEX yup it was so hot that day!
Hahahahaha. Good eye!
Florida drizzle. People moving down here are aghast at the reality of trying to work outside dripping sweat all over your projects.
Might as well buy a new trailer
Is it called rusty metal primer because it's for use on rusty metal or because it looks like rusty metal after you've painted it?
epoxy paints are much more durable that are even offered in a throw away spray can.
How long did those staples which attached the carpet to the bunks last?
@@jeffw6224 so far 4 months
Mmmm grinding galvanization off
How many cans of primer did you end up using? I'm planning on doing my trailer of a similar size soon.
@@adiboo8142 I believe it was 6
Aren't your safety chains supposed to be crossed under the tongue, so they can catch it if it comes off the ball?
@@mhfuzzball correct, the ones I got are a bit too short so I’ll be replacing them..
fuzzball, exactly what I was going to post! Ya beat me to it! :)
Nice one. Will you restore the boat too ? 🤔
I’m not sure yet 🙂
@@DrRestoration come on. We Know you want it 😂
@@juliom6260 it’ll depend on how this video does, it takes 3-4x longer to do something when recording it 🙂
@@DrRestoration I can imagine it. Well, do whatever is better for you. I'm sure we'll love it.
Shame the bolt you used on the coupler was too short.
The Nylok nut only works if the thread of the bolt goes through it, the pictures clearly showed the old bolt did this by at least 2 or 3 threads, the new bolt is about 10mm too short (1/2")
Is there a link to parts used for this build?
mudguards are on the wrong sides - would have been nice to use stainless hardware - the nut on the hitch didn't go far enough on to catch the nylon - impressed with the powdercoating. I have the equipment but havent used it yet
padlock on the spare
I had issues with my lights not working on my trailer because the ground wire was only grounding through the thickness of the material where the screw went through instead of grinding down to bare metal where the washer and eyelet set on frame.
That thing won't last a couple of years without anodes. I mean, bolts are the anodes now.
Looks great but you used no grommets on the wiring. That'll create problems
Where did you find that replacement at 21:21??
Hope you used stainless staples!
@@TheJimbob1603 yup!
One thing that you don't realise is that indicator lights are yellow, NOT red. It is obvious to people that see that orange is for indicators, and red is for brake lights. The US is soooo far behind the rest of the world with construction and use regulations for vehicles, compared to the rest of the world.
Are you not aware that all indicator lights in every country are amber (not yellow)? Indicator lights are amber in the US, have been since the 40s. You just trying to find a reason to be hateful, or? BOAT TRAILERS usually don’t have indicator lights at all. They’re usually 2 in one with the brake lights.
