A1: A slide / すべりだい (suberidai)
Q2: What is a building that is white even though it has color?
A2: A Castle / しろ (shiro) [pun: shiro means white]

Q4: What is something that you will gladly see even if you are deceived?

Q5: I am square and have yellow leaves. What am I?

Q6: A pie with an apple is an apple pie. Then what is a pie that is good-for-nothing?
A6: A failure / しっぱい (ship"pai")
Q7: What is a "pan" you wouldn't want a hole in?

Q12: What is a clothing that will make you happy when you put it on?
A12: A Happi / はっぴ (happi)
Yeah, no surprise that this was impossible for them. Literally every quiz question is a japanese pun and impossible to translate.
Thank you so much!
woah so Arin actually got the magic one?!?!?
Thank you! I'm actually kinda sad that he didn't get Q4 since he had the right answer, just not the right translation.
If arin had put a little more thought into q4 he should have gotten it.
In English, there is a difference between witchcraft and prestidigitation.
"We fucking did it, dude!" - Arin successfully failing a quiz. Wish I had that kind of cheer after my college exams.
Me after my elementary oral Japanese midterm 😂
arin forcefully asking dan "What's in the bastard pie" and Dan's scared "i don't know" has me ROLLING
This is actually genius. They should play a bunch of other-language games, since Arin never reads stuff anyway. Would be a fun way to show them.
“Is he invisible?”
“He’s a Doctor”
Don’t know why that made me laugh, but it did, and now I’m all in
It’s the damn immediacy of the response and the complete lack of relevance 😂😂😂
@@Meepers_the_Great yes!!! Lol
Loving this inexplicable "Tower of Babel" era of Game Grumps that we're in right now.
i love that allegory 😂
Google Translate struggles here for many reasons 😂
But the main one is this:
Written Japanese language has two forms of characters, kana and kanji.
Kana is easy to read because they are characters that represent single syllables (similar to the alphabet).
Kanji is notoriously more difficult to read because they carry not just sound but meaning, and their pronunciation changes depending on how they are combined to form bigger words.
Sounds like a pain, BUT! Japanese language is filled to the brim with homonyms (words that have same pronunciation but different meaning), so kanji is very helpful when deciphering the meaning of a word when reading.
But since this is a game meant for Japanese children, it’s text is written purely in kana (because even native Japanese take many years to learn the thousands of kanji needed to read typical writing effortlessly).
So without kanji, meaning is hard to grasp when there is no context, and Google translate is not smart enough to understand the context of the small bit of text it’s given, so when translating to English, it guesses many of words or just straight up doesn’t translate it.
Looks like we get to see more of Arin’s incredible Japanese fluency.
I think after so many of these moments and episodes the only person on the planet who believes Arin knows a lot about Japan or much Japanese is Arin
@@THENAMEISQUICKMAN He selected taxi while thinking he was selecting bamboo, right after learning that bamboo wasnt a japanese word. This man's a genius
It's like he was fine at it several years ago and hasn't practiced since then or something.
It’s not like he ever claims to be close to fluent. He’s just taken some lessons and finds it interesting.
This would actually be super fun if he got his tutor here to help like the most unexpected Guest Grump.
I didn't see this elsewhere in the comments, so I thought I should mention that the elephant's name is Ao Zoura, which is a play on words combining aozora (blue sky) and zou (elephant).
I love that "a pie that is good-for-nothing" became a "bastard pie" 😂
What's in a pie that's good for nothing???
@@1WEareBUFO1WE'LL NEVER KNOW
“is he invisible?”
“he’s a doctor”
me trying to have a conversation with my extended family i don’t know very well
As a professional Japanese translator, I feel so vindicated - WHO'S COMING FOR MY JOB NOW, GOOGLE TRANSLATE?
Arin: I think the answer is bamboo!
Arin: [selects "Taxi"
arin and dan trying to play japanese quiz games that seem to be about puns is not something i expected i need in my life.
With Arin's drinking and training, all he is doing is turning into a 1930s pugilist.
He definitely is somehow already punch drunk, because of all the brain damage.
IS THAT FAMOUS PUGILIST, TOMMY RAE HANDLY?!
“He’s got the crow madness, which was a type of early man I believe” from Dan killed me and Arin didn’t even hear it, it was so funny
Watching Arin scream in pain trying to find ち (chi) near the end and glossing over it over and over again just had me dying for some reason.
He was touching every other character but ち. I was laughing because it was RIGHT THERE
He was suffering from stress blindness
Dan making a joke about the years not being kind to Data from Goonies. Meanwhile, he's in a movie absolutely dominating award season.
Quite a step up from being a skull mushroom in a Japanese elephant game
Like… I hope he was kidding because I’m like.. he’s doing great man!
@@meganhindman9240 he totally was, Dan was saying he'd become a skull mushroom
I translate Japanese music into English and Thai (My first language), with a dictionary and translator (I still can't barehand translate Japanese yet).
This game is quite interesting to me. I was watching for fun and read these words along with Arin.
At 28:00; the Apple pie has an apple in it, Then the 【できそこない】 Bastard (Failure) is in what pie?; I think the answer is Shippai 【しっぱい or 失敗】which also means Failure.
NGL I think I might download this game and play it a bit.
Are you telling me this was a word pun?
@@t3hfluff yes
@@t3hfluff apparently the majority of the game is puns that only really work in Japanese xD
hagaki is the square leaf that goes in the mail 🙃. I'm suprised Arin couldn't get *any*
Also was Baby the answer to mother and father?
I actually enjoy this clueless vibe, who the hell needs language comprehension when you've got a buddy?
🤣🤣
A buddy with Google Translate on his phone!
One of life's greatest questions:
"Can you help? Y/N"
I think they wanted "majikku' for magic, that's the fun illusion type of magic. Maho is like actual spellcasting and witch stuff.
Somewhere, Arin's japanese tutor is crying. You've failed the test!
The constant pop-up messages really remind me of Arin's Sequelitis screaming "Mega Man, Mega Man!"
That popped into my head every time she came onto the screen lol.
As a Japanese speaker, this is a pretty funny game lol
Were the questions limericks/riddles or just regular kid knowledge?
Okay but you can't leave us hanging on what was actually happening.
I will pay you an uncalculatable amount of internet points for helping us all get the context of what they were saying.
Please tell us the answers to the riddles. I need it
@Neveko Verhichi explains every question and answer out for you in the comments. Found it. It's LITERALLY fucking impossible for them because you'd have to understand Japanese and English fully to get the convoluted puns they dished out to our boys.
Yes! Now *we* get to see what Arin sees when tutorial text comes on the screen ☺️🍿
As someone that is in the beginnings of learning japanese, seeing Arin stumble all over his hiragana hits so close to home.
This was a delightful traumatic gaming experience
Arina losing his shit over a children's riddle game from Japan is one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time 😂
That elephant is fuckign adorable
Japanese is an interesting language. One of the ways you can write "Baka" ) Japanese word for stupid) is using the characters for horse and deer. Imagine just starting to learn the language and being like "Horse deer? Whats the heck is that supposed to mean?!" only for the answer to be stupid 🤣
To be completely fair, English must be terrible to learn as a second language, lol. It's such a mutt, stealing words from other languages and just mashing them in whether they fit or not.
Just amazing how such a cute game can make Arin sweat and Dan want to break his own neck
This episode made me happy. I got to see a cute elephant. I got to hear Dan say funny phrases using Arin's app-ridden phone. I got to hear Arin's excellent Japanese. And then I got to hear them both want to unalive themselves.
Beautiful one-off. =)
"We're in bastard's pie territory."
-Daniel Avidan '23
Arin's realization at 8:51 that he has to type individual characters had me dying 🤣
the whole "we dont know the plot because its Japanese so were making up our own plot" bit reminds me of the Drakhen playthrough...the journey of Bill, Langley, BigBill, and Brian/Frank/Steve/Willard/Jonathan/Michael IV/Michael III/Michael Jordan/Scott and their quest to 7-11...
I heard your "Crow madness" joke, Dan, and I appreciated it. It didn't go unheard.
honestly the boys making up their own dialogue and plot was so much more entertaining than i could have ever thought possible
I like to imagine Bundai from Samurai Champloo coaching him on...
" _No! That bastard [the pie] has a swoop! You picked the answer with the loop!_ "
edit: Also, he had a *GOD TIER* Japanese voice actor...
Dan, if you like the mystery of not knowing, you might enjoy Tunic. Its based on that old school "pick up a barely translated famicom game and not understand most of it" vibe. but actually DOES have secret deep lore. also its cute tiny critter people and we all know you cant get enough cute things.
As someone trying to learn this language, I can understand what Arin is going through trying to read the characters and then hear the crap the translator is spitting out
The first mistake is using a translator lol
Although I'm cool with them using it in the show because it's funny
Even though it was apparently the wrong answer, Arin finally discussed the blue, cloud covered elephant in the room when he put his fork down in order to get his sculpted cloud body.
I like how after camera man simulator Dan can now Google translate any foreign game that Arin chooses.
continuity!
To varying effect.
I'm glad that Arin's Japanese lessons are finally paying off!
"We're just not thinking strong enough!"
That touches my soul as a fellow ADHD boi
The first question was "Going is stairs, coming is slope, what is it?" and the hint was "it's in a park". Obviously the answer is a slide, but I don't know what a slide is in Japanese.
honestly the grumps talking over the plot and not paying attention to it works over any language XD
Less than 30 seconds in and Arin has already read the japanese incorrectly. nice 💥💥💥💥💥
yeah this is painful
@@mari_vivids WHERE IS CHO
literally said の instead of と I am dead 💀💀
god I love arin lmao
Well, he’s an American who was taught only English growing up. He’s trying. Please be understanding to foreigners
@@katelyn984 Isn't really a difficulty thing. just what happens when you stop learning
Was not expecting a Scott Stapp joke from Dan in a game about a blue elephant but here we are🤣
If they're gonna keep playing Japanese games maybe they should start looking at jisho as a resource when they need to know the Japanese word for something
[Dale Gribble Voice] "I remember when Arin used to know Japanese."
“What’s your favorite episode of Game Grumps, Billy?”
“I like the one where they try to translate from Japanese for a loooooooooong time!”
I think all of those riddles were based on wordplay, so the translation app wouldn't help at all.
Dan: “Is he invisible?”
Arin: “He’s a doctor!”
TYPICAL
Im learning korean, and I felt it when arin was just, CYCLING the pronunciations
Arin manically almost-solving Japanese riddles for children is so good! The translations are off one or both ways, there are probably cultural cues that we don't know, and the music is driving us bananas. This is Arin studying, and it's maddening for us and them. Great video, Grumps!
They should've gotten Arins Japanese tutor as a guest grumps lol
The game is called Blue Sky Elephant and Friends’ Dream Adventure.
I love how they managed to figure out that the questions are riddles based on Japanese wordplay, but still tried to answer every single one of them in English translated back into Japanese.
I need to save this video. This is the perfect thing to watch and practice the bare basics. I'll be taking notes!
As a Japanese, I can tell Arin is doing his studies pretty well.
Definitely one of the Game Grumps moment of a lifetime.
Reminds me of when Chris Farley was an American on a Japanese game show
26:13 An octopus wrapped in a tortilla would be a Tako taco, Dan. Which I’m pretty sure is a thing around Mexican coasts.
pulpo (octopus in spanish) tacos are legit delicious
The joy this elephant brings me is immeasurable. I would die or kill others for them
I really want a compilation of edits that makes it seem like Dan speaks _terrible_ Japanese
The ecstasy crow almost made me spit out coffee 💀💀 10:34
I was looking for this comment-Had me cackling😭💀
25:23
When you have a stroke
How in the fuck is Arin the biggest magical girl fangirl in the world but he’s never heard the term ‘mahou shoujo’ lmao
Out of all of those that’s the one he absolutely should’ve know smh my head
Watching this video is like the dreams you have after taking too much cough medicine
having just taken cough medicine, im not sure that even covers it XD
"Playing laser with myself" is my new favorite euphemism
Omg Arin trying to find 'cho' made me laugh but also yell at my phone pointing at the correct one xD
“Rather than love, than money, than fame, give me corndogs”
Ugh, same
@@cameronjadewallace whahahaha yups
Me: “The pie has apples in it. Then, bastard, did you get the pie?!”
My mom: “You’re grounded.”
the gekibo episode from a few days ago already drove my native japanese speaking husband crazy, he might actually rip his hair out if he watched this one lol
One thing I love is that Dan only has one old man voice lmao
More of this please it's a terrible agony and I must have more
dan's crow madness/early man joke had me in tears 🤣🤣🤣
Ah yes, we get to see more of Arin's vast knowledge after at least a decade of studying Japanese. XD Seriously, I think his grasp of the language was stronger in the Jon era.
"DO YOUR BEST AND HIT SOMETHING" should be the slogan for Creator Clash
Did anyone else get mad SNL Japanese gameshow vibes with Mike Myers and Chris Farley? 😂
Arin continues to not know the difference between a limerick and a riddle
And limerick isn't even a thing in Japanese
yo I had this game and could not for the life of me beat it (I understand zero Japanese) even though I’ve never went pass the first stage, I somehow kept playing it, the elephant is just so cute, it always makes me come back
Absolutely losing my shit at "Then, bastard, did you get the pie?!"
When the quiz portion started I literally shook my head at Arin. Dan was right YET AGAIN🤣🤣😭😭🤦🏽♀️
13:45 holy shit the Andy Rooney reference 💀
"TWHAT'S IN THE BASTARD PIE?? THEN, BASTARD, DID YOU GET THE PIE?? ...FUCK!!"
I was loling throughout, but I had to rewind several times to savor this.
If they're going to play GBA games, they really should play Minish Cap since it's on the Switch now
I love when Arin comes into the office with a USB drive full of obscure Japan-only games and just springs them on Dan with no warning.
Game Grumps should play "Ore no Ryouri"
It is a competitive Japanese cooking game that I guarantee they will enjoy!
For those who have not seen the comment that explains every riddle, these are all puns and or Japanese idioms. No machine translator will help here.
Dan: "Hello Game Grumps fan."
Arin (translating): "boku no chin chin chiisai desu"
I feel Arin so much with this. When you have an interest in some subject, even if you're far from an expert, it's so fun to put what you know to the test, try to figure things out like this. However if Arin knew the amount of layers he's missing to even have a chance at this...
Not judging, I'd be in the same boat, blindly believing I have a shot. But yeah I *_really_* wish he gets to see the japanese dude's comment translating everything, I'm sure it'll make his day. Or ruin it. Either way he'll find it interesting I'm sure :p Someone should tweet it at him if that hasn't happened yet. I don't have Twitter.
"We're in bastard's pie territory here" - Dan
If it was multiple choice he'd have a chance, but Dan is right. The fact he has to type every answer and pick from a large pool of words is utterly brutal. For someone who's not fluent at least.
"Gendel bandage stomp is honky!" should be a t shirt
Arin: *Skips through the dialogue and plot *
Me: *trying to practice my Japanese by speed reading the text* …..ARIN!
I was planning on learning Japanese this year, I can't wait to come back to this video to test my knowledge at the end of the year! 😅
I love this lil elephant guy already
I would like you all to know that the name of the elephant is a pun. The name is "Ao Zōra" which is a mash between "Blue sky (Ao Zora)" and "Elephant (Zō)
What an adorable DEFINITELY TOTALLY PLOTLESS game you guys played
If they were in Brighton or the Time Zones weren’t so different, Arin and Danny could simply ask Evelien!
