Sometimes I feel bad for not exercising Japanese enough every day, and then I see Arin (who has mentioned several times he's had lessons with a tutor, while I'm doing my best learning on my own) struggling to translate stuff like "kore ga nippon", and I'm like "Japanese is fucking hard, and I should chill".
This isn't a snarky comment towards Arin, cause I'm guessing he doesn't want to mistranslate stuff and look stupid, so he probably lists several potential meanings of a sentence.

    • @JohnnyNatrium
      @JohnnyNatrium Год назад

No Arin just misinformed Dan by acting like he knew what he was talking about and explaining things but getting even the most basic things completely wrong. There's no need to mollycoddle someone when they're just being plain stupid, like anyone who tries to sound like he's educating someone on something but getting it completely wrong; you're supposed to roast that kind of behavior lol. If he can't even get basic Katakana right, he clearly didn't put in more than a few hours of effort towards learning the language and shouldn't try to look like he has any authority on the subject.

The word Arin was reading was ニッポン、 which is a stylized way to write Japan (日本) in Japanese

2:45 Arin is wrong in this instance, but I would like to make sure he gets credit for remembering that Japanese does have a character for extending a vowel sound, however that character looks like this 「ー」 this is exclusively used in katakana (the script used for ニッポン in this frame). The character in question 「ッ」 is a smaller version of the character 「ツ」 (つ in katakana) which normally makes the "tsu" sound, but in this context it is used to create a small stop of sorts before the next syllable (technically called a mora, as syllables can span multiple mora in some cases). In the case of 「ニッポン」 the romanized version would look something like "Nippon" which is a way of saying Japan in Japanese (typically people say and write it as 日本 「ニホン」 "nihon", but Nippon is a less modern and refined way of saying it) The full quote from our beloved 編集長 (editor-in-chief) is something like: "Something is happening in Japan, go and investigate it."

AKCHYUALLY, the small "tsu" is used to double the following consonant, not extend the vowel at the end of the syllable. Translation of the tutorial (around the time they are talking about "we should have gotten the European version"):
    - Watch out for objects glowing red, they'll make you lose items. Either jump to dodge them or take [pictures] and defeat them! You can also fight back with flash!
    - Also, when you can take pictures (have photo opportunities?), the mark (?) will flash, so get used to that.
    - Taking [pictures] in the center earns you more points, as well as using zoom or getting two at once is very beneficial.
    - Some things only appear when you zoom, jump or use your flash.

    3. There's actually a Nickelodeon-licensed GBA game that DID release in the West with NEAR-IDENTICAL gameplay to this series called Nicktoons: Freeze Frame Frenzy. You go to various Nicktoon worlds and take pictures of out-of-place characters. Invader Zim is the big villain. No joke.

This game is fun to watch, which is the whole point I guess as it's essentially a video where you point out everything crazy that happens

    Arin (to the prompt): Hai.
Dan (in response to Arin w/ MAXIMUM genuinity): Hi!
I don't think Dan realised Arin was saying Yes/Ok 😆

The banner behind the bald blonde guy in the office that says アイ ウォント ピュリッツァー means "I want Pulitzer", like the Pulitzer prize.

Arin is a real master of the Japanese language.
"Oh, the smiley face signs? Shi and So." (it's Shi and Tsu)
"The Shi sign, when it's small like that, elongates the syllable" (it does the opposite, it shortens it)
"So it's koopo, instead of kopo." (That's a Ni, not a Ko... it means Nippon... the Japanese word for Japan, the country whose language you just butchered. But at least that mistake he realized =D)
Only Arin can sound so confident while having no clue what he is talking about
