Having seen some Japanese animal videos on RUclips, I think the hamster 'game' is just an emulation of these styles of shows/videos. Seems to be unique to them, as far as I can tell.
Arin trying to fix his dog after repeatedly blasting its face with a dog horn by petting it for 60 seconds is peak Game Grumps and I'm crying from laughing so hard.

I'm so fucking angry at Arin for saying ants just scramble though. They fucking build amazing structures, have a caste system in their societies, build bridges out of their own bodies, some species can kill and eat a fucking rat (Dorylus)... I could go on for several paragraphs.
When Dan said he thought they played the Dogz game before, he was actually thinking of The Dog Island. It was made with extremely similar models and was basically a reskinned version of that game!

Yes but also no! Dan was referring to the Catz version that they also played, and at the time remarked on its similarity to The Dog Island. Amazing that they've basically played the same game three times at this point.

The last Petz games was one of my favorites back in the day, but the PC version was way better. There was a whole online community, and people made adoption kennels on geocities to trade dogz and catz. And we'd try to create new breeds via breeding in game or using what was called a Hex editor where you'd code new dogs. It was fun.
Yes! The original PC games up to Dogz 5 and Catz 5 were so much better! The breeding system was cool too! 😅

I went through it in November with my 15-year-old dog. Went from happy, healthy, and active to downhill in under a week. It doesn't stop hurting, but it gets easier. What I did to help feel better was cry when I needed to, and when I was ready, I decided to foster a dog in his honor. I've fostered kittens for years, but never dogs. Helping another dog in his memory hasn't healed my heart, but it sure has made it less empty.
To all pet (not to be confused with petz) owners, remember that although our pets are not here forever with us, we are here forever with them. What we do is give them wonderful, happy lives. From our point of view, it ends too early, but for them, it was everything.
Our hearts may have pet-shaped holes in them when they're gone, but I hope you can feel comfort in knowing that their hearts were filled with you until the end.
Petz 5 on PC was where the cool kids hung out! You could download extra dog/cat breeds, or even horses, rats, mythical animals. Basically you could create your own species. There was breeding functionality and different locations. Makes me want to play it again!
One of my favorite things about recent episodes is Allie softly losing her mind with laughter in the background at random.

Catz 5 is actually good. I used to play it consistently as a kid. My parents were allergic to anything with fur, so it was the closest I got to a pet and tbh I remember really enjoying it and being very attached to my petz :)

I had a dwarf hamster who every morning would wake up and wait for a cheerio. Even if you gave him something else he would still wait for the cheerio and wouldn't go back to bed without it.
I played every single one of these games as a kid. Petz horses 1 and 2 are both masterpieces and they never wont be; I’m so sad that one was broken haha

Also Dan commenting on dogs evolving to look friendlier; its partially true! They've evolved to look cuter, because they would probably have a better chance of being fed by humans that way.
Cats also meow to emulate human talking, I believe! They have other ways of communicating with other cats, and simple meows arent usually high on that list
I actually owned Petz Hamsters for the DS when I was little.
It came in a Target bundle with a DS case, screen sticker and replacement styluses, which is probably the only way they could ever sell this game.
I can confirm this was exactly what the game was like, but also strangely I remember playing it for hours.
You could let the hamster out of his cage and it would wander around the living room floor where it would randomly find new items for its cage. When I found a mini roller coaster, I figured I'd probably seen the coolest and weirdest thing I'd probably ever see in the game and finally stopped playing.
