Thank you so much for teaching this quilt! I wanted to do a civil war quilt for quite some time, and you have provided the guidance and inspiration that I needed. Your instructions are clear and helpful. I'm excited about the project, and I can't wait for the next lesson.😊

Hello I have been learning to quilt on my own through RUclips and designers who teach through their videos. I have watched your video and I’m loving your instructions because I’m still not sure how to figure out the dimensions to the blocks nor the construction of the blocks. I can look at the block and see what the parts are but I still need guidance into how to make the pieces to the block. I’m so thankful you provide it. I just ordered my book and to take and read the stories in them. I also will be searching for some fabrics to use to make this quilt. Headed to a retreat on Saturday but will look forward to coming home and catching up. Thank you so very much.

When you mentioned cat’s cradle, I suddenly remembered I had a cat’s cradle ruler. I used it for block 42 using the 4” lines. It makes 2 instead of 1 unit but that didn’t bother me-I just set the second aside. Fun tool.

Karen, I need your help with block 42. I don't understand how the bottom of the basket attaches with the pieces being diagonal. Can you please explain the placement of the 2-1/2 square on the other piece to take the diagonal. Thank you.

The small square that matches the basket fabric is really a triangle. You can cut it with a specialty ruler or cut a square in half by placing the 1/4" line diagonally from point to point. Those triangles get added to the background rectangle, making sure that the triangle is facing the correct direction. When those are sewn to the basket segment, the only thing missing from the block is the background triangle.

@@KarenMontgomeryTQC thanks for your quick response. I will go back and complete my block using triangles.

It’s harder to follow as part of the block of the month, they’re sending us the blocks in order, so 1,2, 3, and 4 and now, 5,6, 7, and 8

Debra, this free program is an off-shoot of the Nine Patch a Day Group that I host on Facebook. That is a private group and is free to join. I am hosting the sew-along for those members that choose to participate, using their own fabrics. The only required purchase was the book by Barbra Brackman. I am providing the blocks monthly in the order that makes sense to me. You may have purchased a Block of the Month program from another source. I can't control the order that they send the blocks or the amount of fabric they include. We are happy to have you follow along with us, but please make the instructions from the shop sending your kits a priority, as I have no way of knowing if you will have the fabrics needed to make any changes I suggest.
