- How to Fix Hard Drive Disk 100% Usage
Remember to always backup your data before you work on your computer.
There is many reasons why the hard disk runs at 100% percent. I will list some of the things you can try to resolve the hard drive problem.
In no particular order:
1. Disable Windows Search.
2. Disable SuperFetch Service.
3. Check Anti-virus Software.
4. Scan for Malware and Viruses.
5. Check your hard drive to see if has gone bad.
6. Defragment your hard drive
7. Scan for errors on drive chkdsk /f /r
8. Upgrade hard drive
9. Standard SATA AHCI Controller
Navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\PCI\AHCI Controller\Device Parameters\Interrupt Management\MessageSignaledInterruptProperties",
change MSISupported key from "1" to "0".
10. Uninstall or Disable Flash Player Update
11. Uninstall Skype
12. Check Resource Monitor for process that's hogging resources
13. Check Windows updates
14. Try system restore
15. Reinstall Windows
16. Perform a Clean Boot

'Background intelligent transfer service' was my culprit.
But I also turned off Cortana permanently as a plus.
Now, Disk usage is a cool 12% even though video editor is in process.
Dang, I should have started with this video first. You are always so thorough! My son's laptop has had this problem for a year and some of the over videos I watched on Windows Search and Superfetch just didn't help. This video is much more thorough and helped me diagnose and finally fix it. Thanks Britec09!

thanks, this confirms some of my experiences and adds some interessting points
I spent a long time researching this problem. Nothing seemed to work. In the end it was the IDE controller however there was no "MessageSignaledInterruptProperties" key in the Registry so I had to create a key and then create and assign a value for "MSISupport". I couldn't have done this without your video, so BIG THANK YOU!
I did this and now my computer is stuck at 10% scanning and repairing drive :/ what I think is disk light is appears to be fully light. I tried to interrupt the normal startup but when I hit enter, it doesn't do anything. I heard this can take a very long tome but at this point I honestly don't think it's going anywhere considering how fast it got to 10% and stopped, now I want to turn off my computer. Should I? I don't know if it's safe
I’ve tried all of the things shown in the video and it helped a little, but I’ve found that a process called wsappx is hogging all my disk usage. Anyone know how I can fix this?
I know this is an older reply. but for anyone wondering about this, this is how you fix it:
Type 'gpedit.msc' in Start Search and press Enter. ...
Go to 'Computer Configuration' and select 'Administrative Templates'.
Then go to 'Windows Components' and select 'Store'.
Find the 'Turn Off Store application' setting in the right pane.
Select 'Enable' and 'Apply'.

Will Kaspersky antivirus cause this problem? Because I have had an incident that once I installed Kaspersky, my system was slowing down and harddisk usage was 100%. It was also cause blue screen error.

Msconfig is always the first place i go after a fresh install, the amount of crap that creeps in and slows the machine down.
Next the services get edited.
Next remote desktop/registry is stopped, just asking for trouble.
Updates on a weekly setting Plus turn off all animation.
Makes a hell of a difference.

I think mine is hardware related since my secondary WD Black Drive constantly chugs back and forth even before the OS boots and also when I disable it in BIOS. It would make boots slow as well and I use a SSD as boot drive.
Great video brian I once saw a computer with this problem I tried a lot of things nothing worked then I opened it up to find a SATA to SD Card 2.5" converter, like how why wtf!? people are weird.
This Hard Disk is 100% can be many things, impossible to cover every possible fix, but SATA to SD Card 2.5" converter lol

the reason im getting an external ssd is because when i game im getting 100% disk usage. Ive disabled windows search, superfetch. prefetch, storage sense, msi mode to 0, and countless other options and im left with getting an ssd. Plus i dont have alot on my pc as i reinstalled it hoping it would fix the problem, so currently im at 740 gb free of 930 after installing my game to my hdd, which would of been enough if i had to put it on my ssd. Im thinking maybe i should just install the game i play to the ssd in hopes that stops the 100% disk when gaming maybe?
sometimes, 100% disk issue is caused by wrong HDD format or wrong driver controlling the HDD. I have tried every single solution you mentioned but it was just better but couldn't fix it totally. I solved it by totally deleting the HDD -> reformat and re-partition using minitools partition manager and installing windows from scratch. Now the issue is fixed. Of course, I also do all the steps you mentioned to further reduce disk usage

In resource monitor my pc has system files that are super high
For some reason after the last Cumulative Update (May 2018 KB4100403) my CPU and Memory was getting all hogged up.
I also noticed Superfetch was running all the time.
I didn't want to have to reinstall Windows if it was a simple fix, so I took a chance and went into Services and disabled both Superfetch and Windows Search - now it runs like a dream and the CPU and Memory usage are back to normal. 👍
I love Windows but I really wish that when they do an big Update that they wouldn't break something on my Rig, lol.

Why does everyone focus on the WINDOWS drive, the issue I'm having is that one of the other drives without windows on it is having this issue yet I havent found a single post on the internet on how to fix that
you where doing fine but fd it up on the registry part as you asked to find the ven number but how and where
this is the registry you must be percise

I have formatted my drive and reinstalled win10 and still see 100% disk usage, this eliminates most of the causes, now what could be the cause?
The moment you install Windows 10 it is looking for updates therefore your 100% disk usage. It is a programming error!
Use Linux, it doesn’t munch on your resources like a hungry goat!
My dad`s computer has had this problem now for a while and has caused it to run so slowly and i have been tasked to research methods to tackle the issue
I only got 100% when Startup my Leonovo Laptop, I tried this and still happening. 100% Activity, until 15/20 minutes. At Resource Monitor there is 0% Highest active time. That is strange because both are with different "Active time". HDD is 1 TB ST1000LM024 HN-M101MBB

In my case disabling Windows Modules Installer service fixed 100% hard drive usage on Windows 10.
Using my computer normally and the disk usage is 0-8% .. after 2-3 hours of usage
The disk usage is 100% for some reason
And i can't do anything about it just to restart my pc and it annoys me so much !
It works. I just turned off all the freaking services that I don't use

Important note: do not uncheck any system services (like HP services if you're an HP user) from the system configuration or else you'll end up locking you're laptop (if you have PIN) as the PIN service isn't running. I ran into this problem so had to factory reset my laptop.j

Ali Al Iraqi he said it exactly. Using an SSD just masks the issue but does not fully fix it because SSD is so fast that you may not notice it but it may stll be there

If its Win7 try disabling the Win Update service. I've had a few systems where it goes nuts. I only turn it on when I want to do an update.
Cheers mate, but it seems to happen when I play vids and youtube mostly, they push the pentium D E945 3.4 ghz to it's max and I get vidio stutter, me thinks its the end for the duel core proceessor,
