Dieting is Making You Fatter? - Body Fat Set Point Change Theory

  • While energy balance seems simple, it is made up of many complicated components. After working with thousands of people in my life, I have seen how improper dieting actually leads to people putting on more body fat over time, even though they spend the majority of their life dieting. The fad/yoyo dieting consistently caused people to gain more body fat over the course of their life. Seeking answers, I dug deep into the research and found things that blew my mind, especially regarding adipose tissue adaptations to dieting and body fat setpoint. Specifically, that you could actually increase your number of fat cells in your body in a short period of time, given the right circumstances. in this video I discuss my theory on body fat setpoint and why dieting makes some people fatter.

    LAYNE DOES IT AGAIN!!! These series just get better and better!! So glad you're doing this one Layne!! Keep it coming!! Can i plz plz plz beg you to do one episode in relation to this and an obese person who loses weight.......i.e. a 330lb male/female going to 200lbs or so, who also builds some muscle mass, then what happens, would his leptin signals keep pushing for more food till he returns to 330lbs, like...are you going to be forever hungry battling to maintain 200lbs??

      Donald Ellis this means u didnt develop good habits on the way down. I was 330 went down to 210, and now floating around 220-230, but i am going to be 180-190 even if it kills me!!

      I would definitely like to see this as well. Former football player who needed to weigh 50+ pound more out of necessity. My body just does NOT want to get below about 20% BF. A lot of former lineman who are eating right and on paper should have a negative energy balance that I played with have the same problem. I’ve gotten to 15% before but it was basically like I was in the final stages of a 6 month prep to get there.

    • @yazctr
      @yazctr 6 лет назад

      this sounds exactly like me, at a theoretically calculated 19-21% is where my body starts fighting me, cravings go mental, appetite just goes thru the roof. I literally start dreaming about food! its mad!! Really annoying tho, cozi still have a belly and virtually no visible muscle definition in my upperbody yet, I know around the 200lb mark (im 5ft 10) i should start to see some definition and then that should push me to go the whole hog for the last 10-15lbs.

But also disappointed as to why we can’t lose weight. But knowing this now I can also plan for my body’s adaptation. If I asked Greg, he’d just tell me to buy his cookbook.

    what are your thoughts on being in a 200-300 cal daily deficit and then doing one fairly giant cheat meals a week. would that sort of recalibrate the metabolic rate and the leptin levels? I feel perfectly comfortable in a 200-300 cal daily deficit knowing I have a tasty meal waiting for me. from my personal and current anecdotal evidence I've noticed that I don't have to keep dropping calories and my body still feels comfortable and maintains a level of body fat that I would consider to be below my set point. what are your thoughts?

    So the best way to avoid this it to not over eat after a diet, and reverse diet, so that you avoid the sudden influx of energy that leads to your body creating millions and millions of new fat cells. Pretty much just slowly edge up to your maintenance calories so that your body achieves homeostasis and a body fat set point at your new dieted down body fat?

So would a bodybuilder that "Bulks" and then "Cuts" be considered a yo yo dieter? and does bulking and cutting change your "Set Point" So are your Adipose cells inert?

I want to lean out but my appetite is huge. Any suggestions? I have hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunction, chronic pain from hyper mobility type ehlers Danlos syndrome, and chronic diarrhea. Some level of Mal absorption. I workout about 5 hours a day for pain management and mental health. My average intake is 3900/day but even that leaves me hungry. I’m getting desperate here and trying psyllium to fill me up. I need about 20g psyllium with 2# fatty meat to feel satiated. I eat 2x/day. 16/8 IF. Don’t get hungry between meals. Metabolic health markers are all optimal. Any advice would be appreciated. I am almost 46. I weigh 134# 5’6” menopausal. Would like to build more muscle and lean out a bit. I supplement all sex hormones and thyroid hormones and growth hormone due to brain hamate from 20 years of high dose opioid use for pain. My satiety signal’s definitely no longer work.

I think you can drop your setpoint 5 pounds when losing 10 lbs. then go off diet for 2 weeks. check set point and it will be 5 pounds lower. This seems to be a realistic result. Then return to diet for another 2 weeks. Continue till you get to your desired weight.

    • @georgeorwell7149
      @georgeorwell7149 6 лет назад

      Leptin resistance is a sign of a problem with insulin. When you are hungry it is because your body cannot access the fat stores in your body for energy.

    • @jc9876
      @jc9876 6 лет назад

      George Orwell well insulin resistance is caused by overeating. Which is what I’ve been doing and I can’t stop I feel helpless

    • @georgeorwell7149
      @georgeorwell7149 6 лет назад

      Actually, overeating occurs because you can't access the fat stores in your body for energy and the body needs to get energy from somewhere, so it makes you get hungry to get food energy. Insulin is the key to access to that fat to burn. Keeping insulin low is how fat can be burned.

    So we change our BF set point by increasing the number of adipocytes in the fat tissue, as all adipocytes will tend to go to a certain "adipocyte size set point"... then the question is: can we change the "adipocyte size set point" or reduce the number of adipocytes in the fat tissue (without surgical intervention)? If not, how do we prevent gaining more fat cells during the transition from cutting to bulking?

    Wow, I'm really looking forward to this series! I'm scared to eat a big meal right now until I hear more. A couple questions I hope you can address:
    How long was the open feeding period where the number of fat cells increased? Are we talking a meal or two or several days of straight binge eating to before this effect is triggered?
    Are certain types of intermittent fasting schedules at risk of this? Squeezing your calories into certain sized windows sounds in theory like a "short term flux of energy across the fat cell".

    Have you done the videos on how to prevent or fix the set point? This is the only video in the playlist. Or is it covered in the "Why Diets Fail" series?

    I'm still watching so you may cover this ... I have no hunger. I am overweight and I am *struggling* to get 1700 calories in. I get full so easily. I don't eat crap, I'm a whole food vegan, and my coach and RD have me at 50c/30f/20p. The weight just keeps going up. What the heck is wrong with my leptin??! And why am I not losing?

    Well, this is profound and explains so much!
    Too bad I haven't found it earlier. I'd had much less fat cells.
    Where you've been 20 years ago? LOL
