Proper players and people, the pair of them. Relaxed, funny yet good picks. Jimmy would be in any side with Best but he’s too modest to pick himself. Glad Ian said it for him
Two absolute legends. Loved their show as a kid. RIP Saint and Greavsie. Hope you're having a pint together up there somewhere. By the way, love the way they are picking a ridiculously attacking team. Brilliant.
That team would have scored so many goals, and absolutely controlled the midfield that they wouldn't have been too worried about the defence. But what a defence they had sitting in front of Banksie. I'm fortunate that I saw many of these footballers play when I was a child. Greavsie in my opinion was England's greatest goal scorer.
Just smiling all the way through this. Absolutely wonderful together. Saint and Greavsie reminds me of being a kid who loved football. Wish I could have seen Jimmy play
Real happy days. That was when football punditry was very watchable and great fun. Not like today when it gets really boring as they try to get so technical and basically are spouting rubbish!!!! RIP both Saint and Greavsie you were two very special blokes.
I think at one point even Pele said that Greaves was the best striker on the planet after him . Greaves was an awesome goal scoring machine . Every defender in the world dreaded playing against him .
@Joel D ~ Greavsie was quick and able to go past defenders as if they weren't there. Could you imagine him playing today at his peak. Forget his 30 - 40 goals a season. It would be more like 50+ The balls are now much lighter. Modern boots are like wearing Hush Puppies, they're so light. Pitches are now pristine. When Greavsie played even top grounds ended up being mud baths. The modern game would give him an extra yard or more of pace. Seeing as he was quick anyway, he'd become unstoppable.
Magical listening to those two greats. Very sad they both passed away this year. Many special memories of them as players and broadcasters. Thoughts are with their families.
I was trying to figure that out too. Saint and Greavsie only ran until 1992, but they mentioned MK Dons who weren't formed until 2004. My best guess this was a World Cup special which would make it perhaps 2006?
I’m trying to work out when this is. They talk about Cafu’s 4th World Cup-which would make it as late as 2006. Cafu’s debut was in 1990 after Italia 90 so possibly they are confused, but this would still make it as late as 2002. Had no idea they were still on tv at this point. Wikipedia says the programme finished in 1992.
Greavsie was my idol at school i had his name all over my school books and satchel ..I used to occasionally get bullied at school I was the only Spurs fan there because I live in the North West . we thumped Burnley and I got a hiding but it was worth it !
Jimmy Johnstone should be in that team, He ripped Inter Milan apart in Lisbon 67 then a fortnight later he destroyed real Madrid in the bernabau in Di Stefano's testimonial
Not so sure . I love Clough but I think that he was much better at managing up and coming players but struggled a bit with players already at the very top . I’m not sure his style of man management was suited to elite world class players . Maybe he could have adapted in time but I don’t think he would have wanted to . It was either do things his way or get out of the team . A lot of the names mentioned here definitely would not have put up with that .
A 3-6-1 formation... (5-4-1) A diamond 4... with wing backs Buffon Ramos, Baresi, Maldini Cafu and R. Carlos wing backs Matthaus holding Keane and Xavi Messi (free role) Ronaldo
That's not a bad team, wide CBs who can defend the centre and the wings as necessary, three hard-working and technical midfielders... the only worry is that it is maybe too defensive. Though I reckon if you push Matthaus further forward and Keane and Xavi back behind him that'd be better as LM would be more effective supporting the attack and even contributing goals himself. Then you're attacking with five and have a couple of excellent passers behind them as support. Not trying to claim I'm some expert or whatever though.
@@michaelmetcalfe4882 i like your thinking with LM and i know what you mean about the defensive side. My thinking was that the midfield would be fluent when in possession, so either of them 3 could join the attack and be able cover as well. Sometimes i didnt watch the match i just watched what they did, and i was in awe of them all. Thanks for your message. What would your all time XI be..?
@@MrLbott If you're still interested I've given it a go. With an all-time team I'd take a few more risks with guys I technically saw but was too young or didn't see enough of (Maradona, Matthaus, Rijkaard, Baresi would all be candidates for example) or even guys I've only seen long after the fact (Beckenbauer, Cruyff etc etc), but given your team only included players you'd seen live, I've limited myself in a similar way (albeit all on TV for me): Van Der Sar Thuram Nesta Maldini Cafu Keane Redondo Carlos Messi Ronaldo C. Ronaldo Never a massive fan of 3-4-3 but it seemed the best way to get the most out of Leo and the two Ronnies being all the same team (an opportunity I felt was too good to turn down) - gonna need some addition width from wing-backs. Had I picked a four at the back system I'd probably have Zanetti or Lahm on the right and Maldini or Ashley Cole (maybe) on the left though. Was tempted to include a lot more Barca players but to be honest while of course their dominance was undeniable I was always left a little cold (maybe a little resentful also) watching them play. Van Der Sar was partly a sentimental pick.
An impossible task. Only by breaking it down into decades could you possibly do a World's greatest X1. Was good fun though seeing these two together. I miss Greavsie on the telly

I hope not! Greaves was an alcoholic.

What a so much simpler time and all the better for it. It was just like watching two blokes down the pub discussing footy.
@Puppy 1975 depends what you mean by recent. I think it's probably from mid nineties or earlier.
It would be after 2002 since they talk about Cafu’s world cups.
