head and shoulders above any football show today, rip saint and greavsie.
Used to watch this religiously every week they were great football days
Shortly before Sky Sports killed football as we knew it then😢
Sad to hear Jimmy is no longer with us. Used to love Saint and Greavsie. Good days
Jimmy Greaves, a National treasure. First 5 minutes are an absolute joy to watch😂😂
No longer with us now RIP BOTH OF THEM 🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜
Greavsies quips on the Scotland v Saudi U16 WCF game at the beginning are hilarious...wouldn't get away with any of it nowadays! ....pre-match vegetarian meal, 8 of the saudis have got testimonials coming up, Ian Rushdie!!
+Middlesbrough FC Video Vault
Ah, it was a more innocent time :D
it was better then
salman rushdie was in the news for writing a book against islam.i found it funny when he called him ian rushdie lol and im a muslim
@@daveynwa7376 Not better, just tolerated by the masses. Have you seen the video clip of Geoff Hurst on Match of the Day on the eve of the 1990 World Cup program calling the players of Cameroon "a bunch of lazy n******" on live tv? Nothing innocent about it - those were the times that if you are as old as me, you should remember the state of the country back then.
Bloody Marvellous
Enjoyed that
RIP Ian St John
Very sad to think they are now both gone RIP Saint & Greavsie
“Well eight of them have got testimonials this year”😂😂
It doesn’t look like any of them on the pitch we’re 16😂
It's like being sat in the front room with my grandad and his mate. Great blokes.
These were the best days as a fan and Saint and Greavsie was and remains the finest of football shows.
Michael Knighton, who does love his soccer.
Fond memories of when the game was still beautiful.
Pre Sky television...... I miss those days and S & G was top tv! 👌
Knighton seems like a caricature. A Fast Show character.
A preening cockatrice.
Swiss Michael: 'Buying a majority share in Man United is very much like shagging an old tart...'.
@@grahamnoble4887
A CASTRACISED cockatrice!
It looked like he may have had a gun on him and wanted to usher Martin Tyler down the tunnel for some herbal tea and a "chat".
The twat calls it 'soccer'.
Loved this show! Proper Legends of football and what a Fantastic striker Greaves was, one of England's best ever.
Englands best ever, not one of them. Look at the stats. Games played and goals scored. Everyone goes on about Charlton and Rooney, they couldn't even lace his boots.
Mark Westwood Charlton Yes but Rooney NO. A Greatest Ever England team would include Charlton & Greaves 😎😁
"This is Ian Rushdie who took the Penalty" Greavsie had brilliant Patter.
lol im a muslm and i found it funny
If you did then I did. But not easily
A play on names, no malice intended what so ever, ww all take ourselves too seriously these days, I love a paddy joke as much as the next man to be sure to be sure
@@jimmymcguire8217 👍
One of Greavsie's best, given that I grew up in Cumbria: lowly Carlisle versus Crewe in the early '90s, he said, "the battle of the railway terminals", a reminder that players used to travel the country by train, along side the fans, before modern coaches!!
Carlisle connection....didn't Michael Knighton buy them to....
@@aquaboy68he did, we’ve just been taken over by an American millionaire past few weeks, hopefully better than the Knighton years
Rest in peace boys, hope you're both having a good old chuckle on the other side.
They are, yeah.
Lovely visual in quality of recording, it appears fresh like I've just travelled back into time :-) This was an iconic part of my childhood growing up - always love Saint and Greavsie.
How I miss those days (: easy going and friendly times in football and society in general far less serious and stuffy like today fun times to being a 19 (: year old kid
Absolutely, Phillip. The world today is a completely different place to what it was like back in those days!
Spot on Phillip. Totally agree with you.
Easy going and friendly times in the 80s eh? We’ll not mention the hooligans or the firms then at the height of their power
Money ruined it. Plain & simple. The 90s was still good & money got bigger but acceptable. Come the new millennium it went bonkers & the great game a shadow of its history. Junking the Div 1 league trophy down to tier 2 tells the mindset. Where is it now? Tier 3?
@@crusader8308 - despite Hillsborough, I do think there was already a move in the right direction by this time. The late seventies and early eighties were the absolute worst times for football hooliganism in England.
I remember this as a young lad. Excellent show.
Westend,
Thanks for this vintage episode of Saint and Greavsie!
BEST FOOTBALL SHOW EVER the rest took isberation from this show it set the bar for those that follow it was laid back they told fans how it was 🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜
This is just about the time I started watching football, and all things considered I prefer this era to today
Wake up, watch Kids cartoons, Beans on toast for lunch, Saint & Greavsie on tv, catch the footy bus, meet the lads, watch the game, get home, have a shower, kickers and hooded top on, deodarant down the trousers, bit of blind date, off out to the pub, come home pissed, sleep.
Damn i used to love Saturdays! :)
RIP Sainty.
We all miss it mate.
“The Big 5” and a pre-season match between Man U and Everton in Japan. Plus ça change…
Miss programs like this . 2 legends
"This was Al-Rashudi...."
"Ahh was it? i know him well"
Lol
I was born three days after this show was aired, in what was then Yugoslavia. It's beautiful how this show captures the wonder of football that will last for generations
18th August 1989 was a Friday because on the 19th (Saturday) I was at the Milton Keynes National Bowl to watch Bon Jovi, Skid Row, Europe and Vixen
Watched this a good few times 😂 never missed it on sat morning 😊
Saint was always laughing .... joy to watch how times have changed,
Respect in peace
Saint and Greavsie ❤️🌹
I'm at that age now where everyone I used to watch as a kid are all dying. Be surprised if Greavsie lasts the year. God! how did I get so fukcing old so quickly?
Don't worry mate - you are NOT on your own!!
@@archdeacon1966 same here mate 👍
Pre match vegetarian meal that is hilarious funny.
My thoughts exactly.
A sadly prophetic comment
Its amazing to watch this and see just how many teams had a genuine chance of winning the league in England back then. Changed days indeed.
Pre match vegetarian meal ;)
vinceiswatchingyou: won’t get away with saying that today..
Brilliant!
Now, that would get you a FatOne on you wouldn't it. That's where we are now. Oh for Dave Allen..
The birth of banter
A GREAT SHOW . RIP IAN SAINT JOHN . STAY SAFE JIMMY . A GREAT PARTNERSHIP . martiiin tyler and his like have always hard work too listen 2 him.
Beautiful memories, every Saturday morning.
Miss Saturday tuning into Saint & Greavsie Perfect duo bounced off each other also both were top Footballers respected within the game Legends on pitch Legends on TV Neville hasn't a patch on these two like two old duffers from Muppet Show made football pre match punditry fun simply was a must switch TV on Sat midday.
The saint&greavsie hinge&bracket ...... IMMORTAL
Knighton was a great soccer man.
The King Eric Can-Tona
if only the sale of Man United to Michael Knighton had gone through. They'd be in league 2 by now.
Really great memories. Even the adverts were good to watch ironically interrupted by the RUclips adverts.
Back together again 2021 . Brilliant.
I remember that day so well , lovely sunny day , I was at the Milton Keynes bowl watching Bon jovi
ha ha - livin on a prayer. Wish we still lived in these times. They weren't perfect, but so much better than here at the end of 2021
Absolutely love the domino dancing during the transfer news!
What a brilliant programme.
"Man utd fans aren't happy about how things have been ran in recent years" 😅😅 some things never change
Jimmy on top form as always.....R.I.P....
Paul Dickov no way used to play for us 🤣used to love this show
I used to love this show, RIP Saint and Greavsie! And how about Michael Knighton the 1990's Mike Ashley!
Difference was, Michael Knighton lasted all of five minutes
Micheal Knighton - football's Alan Partridge.
When Martin Tyler was enthusiastic and made sense.
Ahh that theme tune takes me back 😢
the adverts are amazing considering it was at a Saturday lunchtime
God I miss this show
"my interest is soccer" - lol
Ah, the michael knighton years.
Man Utd: Sliding Doors#1!
You mean the Knighton weeks! Lol
Michael Knighton, was the beginning of a new age in English football. No longer was it about the working class, it was about transforming professional football into a commercial brand. If he didn't do it with Man Utd, someone elsewhere would have done it. A lot of these high flying businessmen at the time saw the emergence of Sky TV with the vision of bringing live matches to a global audience (with subscription fee) and could see pound signs. When the premier league took off, the rest was history attracting foreign players from around the world. As a result, English football has become very sterile and soulless, and is a rich man's play-pen. Look at Man City (Arab Oil Tycoon )and Chelsea (Russian Billionaire), players earning ridiculous amounts of money. This is the reason why I like watching these Saint and Greavsie videos. It takes me back to a time when most people in the game were genuine.
Couldn’t have said it better myself.
Very few foreign players in UK at that time. A sprinkling of Scandinavians and Dutch, but very few else. Money sadly rules nowadays
Look at his right hand. Cnut thought he was Napoleon.
Michael Knighton, an expert in juggling his balls in front of The Stretford End.
29:11 Balls of steel.... that arsenal fan behind the Candy sign in the home section
We should have known what time it was the amount of times Knighton referring to football as bloody soccer.. kmt
RIP Jimmy Greaves who died today aged 81. September 19th, 2021.
Sad day.
The Saudis obviously delighted to be at Hampden, kissing the sacred turf!
RIP Saint and now Greavsie RIP !
Ian Rushdie 😂😂😂
RIP Ian St John (Saint), sad loss. Hope Greavsie is ok at the moment... 🙁
Greaves is in a terrible way sadly. Just existing rather than living.
@@ShellysAshes I'm so sad to learn that. I know he was unwell, that I might have Dementia. He already had a stroke, maybe two.. so.. I knew he was unwell, but not as bad as you describe... 🙁 Very sad isn't it.
Whish they were both still on tv now compared to the idiot pundits talking crap now on there clearly reading off a script. Rip saint
@@PeaveyPV20 Me too mate...
And now Jimmy has gone. RIP Jimmy Greaves. So sad.
Football punditry should go back to being like this again. Two mates (respected ex professionals with a GSOH) having a laugh. This is where football has gone wrong. It isn't the money so much (although yes that has something to do with it) - it has just become too corporatised. Too serious.
@Dead Ball Situation......Have you ever worked in the 'corporate world'? A more dour, anal bunch of arseholes you will never meet!
well said - football has been intellectualised and corporatised. People trying to constantly complicate things
United are still waiting to become the best club in the world , 33 years later
28th minute of this Peter Brackley pronounces Cantona as Can- toner.
Take a bow indeed; Johnny Mac you legend.
24:30 what a beautiful challenge
The Saudi's having their pre match meal imagine saying that now you would be hanged in this woke snowflake society these two where legends RIP Saint hope Greavsie is ok
34 years on and we’re still talking about a Man Utd takeover 😂😂😂
Jimmy had me cracking up. The under 16s players looked like 25 year olds.
A man that is into Soccer would not be calling it Soccer.... IT IS FOOTBALL!!!
Yep!
That's what I thought
That Chile - Brazil match was nothing on the reverse fixture in Brazil a month later.
Under 16 my arse
Absolutely joyful time capsule. This was a wonderful Programme - informative and irreverent. So weird to hear about the “West German” Championship and to see what a dreadful dilapidated shithole Stamford Bridge used to be. And who was that French player “Can-tone-a” that scored against Sweden ?
Can TONE A! Brilliant
If that Saudi keeper is 15 years old then I’m the fucking sultan of Brunei.
Looks about 40.
brilliant, this was 19th August though.
Brilliant stuff, at least until Elton Welsby put in an unwelcome appearance.
The inimitable...
Incredible adverts
Michael Knighton, new owner!! Shit. That aged well, what a spiv he turned out to be.
RIP Jimmy Greaves.
Martin Tyler barely a day over 30 as an on scene reporter 😂
Fast forward 35 years & he’s going down as arguably the greatest football commentator of all time along with John Motson.
Legends
Interesting to hear them describe man united as the biggest club in the land even in 1989
Better than the bland shite they have appearing on football reviews now, such as Gary Lineker and Jermaine Jenas.
"The Big 5" is now "The Top 4" 😀
Ian Rushdie.
why mccarrick got bruce forstyh's wig on a stick?
Eric Can-toner not Eric Can-tennar 😂😂
Michael Knighton. You can tell he's making this all up & can't believe they've fell for it. Who lasted longest in football big roles: Knighton or Sam Allardyce?
Opening 2 mins full of harmless comments which would have them sacked 10 times over in 2023
The Mirov 2 in the commercial, ended up just like the Soviet Union ;-)
The adverts tell it all. Booze and ciggies on a Saturday morning.
Campari is not booze. It's nectar of the gods.
Liverpool's last league winning season for 30 years was about to start...
What odds would you have got on that?
