Today’s football punditry is rubbish in comparison...
In cricket, Sir Geoff Boycott said recently that “quality has been sacrificed for equality, gender and race”. And I totally agree with him.
In soccer, the best recent pundits were Mark Lawrenson & Alan Hansen. Now look at it. Just a shadow of itself.

@@michaelfeeney8437 Agreed! When I listen to Ian Wright giving his views after a match I wince! He’s spoken English and grammar is excruciating to hear. He makes Alan Shearer sound like a Shakespearean actor! Jermaine Jenas is fine but constantly to hear Wright mangling the English language is too much to bear! The same with BBC radio. I have listened to several radio 5 live reports, where Clinton Morrison has been asked to contribute as a con commentator. It’s a truly horrendous experience and actually makes listening a tortuous experience! The BBC’s passion to have ethnic voices, irrespective of how well they speak, has now become an obsession. It’s all about diversity and ‘inclusion,’ the new holy grail of the BBC. The same thing has happened in a non sporting programme called the ‘Repair Shop,’ which I immensely enjoy. The programme is fronted by Jay Blades, who’s spoken English is quite dreadful, so much so, that it grates. I’m not averse to having black presenters or pundits, but surely to goodness they shouldn’t be appointed to fulfil a diversity quota.

Yes, as a kid my father used to take me and my brother on every home game at Deepdale watching PNE, it was a sport that working-class people could afford to watch, not today, money has taken over, the matches too expensive and the players overpaid. I have lost all love and respect for the professional game, unfortunately.

60 pence to stand on the terraces at Derby County during their Div 1 Championship season in 1974-75. I kid you not. That's the equivalent of about £5 in today's money!

And the told bugger wasn’t stuck in the past because, until the day he died, he swore Maradona was the best all round player ever despite seeing everyone from Finney to Pele.

As for putting the brakes on the passing of time, I read a review of a book about that very subject a few years ago (can't remember the author or the book, alas). I do remember that the author said that the years appear to pass much quicker and merge into one, if we do exactly the same things each year. Repetitive work tends to make us do just that, of course, but he suggested taking holidays in different places, taking up new hobbies and visiting different cities, pubs, music venues etc. That helps to break up the monotony and enables the brain to break down long passages of time into separate and smaller epochs, giving the impression of the years rolling by much more slowly. I think he has a point and I just wish I had made a note of the author and title. I could look it up, but that would take up precious time, of course!
