When Dr. Carr said that ex-slaves started to go looking for their families after they left the plantations just broke my heart. The notion of seeing your children, your mother, your father, your husband or wife sold off like a sack of grain is simply unconscionable.

Thank you so . much for doing this for our culture. It is up to us to educate ourselves, take pride in our people and ourselves and teach the young! My question is this, what books would you recommend young blacks (11 -16) to read?

    •  4 года назад +2

Yes, they even put advertisements in the newspapers in cities they had been sold from, looking for their children.

It gave me chills. I definitely share that heartbreak. As a native Texan (from the soil of Mosier Valley - historical North Texas Freeman community) that is able to trace my mother's lineage to the inception of The Republic of Texas, I KNOW some of my ancestors were left in Tennessee and Missouri. As for Watchnight and Emancipation Day, Dr. Carr is absolutely right! My father is from the Bahamas and we celebrate them both! It's all over the Caribbean! This conversation was near and dear to my heart! Thank you so much Dr. Carr and Prof. Hunter!! Well done! 👍🏽

I believe that the Tragedy of Mr. George Floyd will change this country. It will take blood and guts perhaps. It has changed me forever. And as a retired white asst. professor who “thought” she had the necessary tools to teach English to the black and white freshmen in college, I am ashamed of my black illiteracy when I truly thought I embodied one of the few progressives. I cannot articulate how providential I feel it is to have discovered your show Prof. Karen Hunter, just by streaming RUclips on my television! I have gained more knowledge in the last 3 ½ weeks from watching your shows than from any other source (though I am learning from as many as I can now). Thank you, and thank you to Dr. Greg Carr who astounds me with his memory and knowledge. I look forward to you every day! Happy Juneteenth!

I'm from Louisiana, born in the 70's, and we have always celebrated Juneteenth.
And always celebrated Memorial day as Decoration Day...always had homecomings during this time, cleaning out the ancestral graveyard. Lots of history lessons took place and the first time I'd seen a headstone from the 1800's.

I was aware of JuneTeenth, but did not celebrate it. My consciousness was raised again when it was celebrated on Ava Duvernay’s Show Queen Sugar a few years ago. I was so impressed that they honored that day and celebrated with family and food. It’s literally our Independence Day.

Did you know if Black Wall Street was a SLAVE COMMUNITY, that nasty mob would have been rounded up and executed? They destroyed a MASSIVE AMOUNT OF PROPERTY. The Slave Owners would never let them get away with that but in the FREE SYSTEM it's okay to do that to black people. Property is valuable, It doesn't matter if it's in things or humans, it's valuable. You think a Slave is going to be hung and the Slave Owner is not going to do anything about it?.. of course, they destroyed his property but in the FREE SYSTEM you're not property and therefore expendable and treated as such. There is a lot of lies and misinformation about Slavery. If you want your property to increase in value you're not going to damage it. What sense does that make but some people did. Some people the vast majority No. Remember, HISTORY is written by the victors.

Every time I listen to Dr. Carr and by also doing my own research online and some in libraries which by the way am glad to see childerns books but are not enough books for adults. And because of all of this books on black history topics are almost and is sold out. That's a great thing and am glad to see it but also we should make certain that we as black people know our history equally,if not better than others! So much rich history I stumbled upon Sissieretta Jones "The Black Patti" we are everywhere can't hold us back awesome. Keep up the great videos.

Greetings Family...i was born in Jamaica, Queens...then we went to Newark...then to Nutley now in Guyana, South America for 11 years...
The first time i lived out of the USA in went to Dominica...i was so excited to live with all shades of brown souls...
It opened me up in ways i could not have imagined!
Well African Liberation Day was coming and i was sooooo excited!
I was teaching art in my studio so i had my students create all types of pieces so we could participate in the parade that would pass right in front of my studio at the same time as class!
Well the students and i had a ball and the media loved us up because of all the creativity that was on display.
Wellllll did i get in trouble....
I quickly found out from the parents that they Do Not associate with anything African...that is a Rasta Ting!
They are not African they are Caribbean! It was such a grear lesson because i had not been exposed to the layers...much less our vast history that is constantly evolving....
Now living in the only English speaking country in South America where we have 6 races of people coexisting ...
And i was told that even though i may be darker in complexion as you...i am not black because my identity is in the straightness of my hair...
I am constantly learning and growing and contributing to the wave of migration....my family starting from Sumter South Carolina...Pocohontas Virginia...Pittsburgh Pennsylvania to Newark New Jersey....
It is sooooo exciting to connect...
    ThankU for showing up!

It's upsetting that there is so much history about Africans and slavery that I've never heard of (contraband camps, emancipation celebrations, the search for families) even though it's woven in throughout historical events that I have heard of. I don't understand why so much is left out of our education. It makes me that much more grateful that there are people like Karen and Dr. Carr who are sharing their knowledge of history. Thanks very much!

So grateful to have the opportunity to listen to these two brilliant people!! This week’s class helped put some of the historical pieces together for me. I was blessed to have been in an Afro American history class. The teacher in my Junior high school shared Information that the public schools left out! Nuggets like Lincoln’s actual motives during the civil war was not present in our books. I look forward to these videos every week. Thank you both so much!! Looking forward to that Watchman analysis:)❤️.

Down in Memphis TN we had the annual Stone Soul Picnic
It was billed as the universal Black Family Reunion. This was always held in June or July .
Families from all around would come out to this celebratory cook out , BBQ - ribs, burgers, sausages, 🌭 dogs , pork shoulder , cole slaw, fried fish &🍝 spaghetti 🍔🍗🎂🥧 YOU NAME IT!! Music , bands, games for children, card games , dominoes , etc.
At these gatherings we were able to see how deep our roots would go back & sometimes find out that friend is a distant cousin , etc. It was beautiful all of us coming together.
No fights just good times! 🤗✨
Love the classes. I have been listening to the show since day when back in 2014 and I love these Saturday classes.

Dr. Carr I am so glad that the young lady that is your co-host during Covid-19 has said that she and her family did not celebrate Juneteenth. I am a fifth generation Texan and my Father was a World War II veteran who went into the war, he was a native-born Texan I was not even thought about being born. I was born after he came back from World War II. My grandparents raised me because when he came back from World War II that's when I was born so I'm a baby -boomer, me and my grandparents never did celebrate Juneteenth and they even said it and I think it's because of Racism they had experience and I grew up in a Christian home, but my Mother was a bar owner because my Father had made a lot of money after the war and he was able to put her into your own business on Galveston Island, a lot of the GI's were loaded with money who were Black and they came back to live on Galveston Island. I lived in an all-Black neighborhood where all the men on the Block were WWII Veterans, can you imagine that and I grew up not in the hood, but in an upper middle class Black neighborhood because when every man is working and he owns property and real estate and has money in the bank and that makes a good neighborhood, no such thing of Drug dealers, all the men went to Church on Sundays, so I think that it has something to do with my Grandparents who had lived through a lot of Racism as well as my Parents did not want to even Celebrate something that had anything to do with Slavery ,but they are all dead and buried on Galveston Island and I'm very proud of my Heritage as far as a Black American in America and also in War because not only did my Father fight in World War II my Great uncle on my Grandmother's side fought in World War II and then my Uncle Joe who is my Grandfather's brother he also fought in World War 1 so I mean, I came from a family of people who fought in the US Jim Crow Military and people who were nurses and I am mixed up myself right now! I'm a Senior citizen and I had to actually move 2 years ago from Texas because I had been driving for Uber and Lyft when it was still respectable and not all the crime. I now live in Atlanta Georgia and I'm experiencing some of the worst Racism that I've ever seen or experienced in my life to Black men who have been actually been lynched in a modern-day fashion! I think because my Grandparents and my parents that seems so much racism they filled me with a lot of love and didn't even discuss things about hating people and they always say that Black people are so forgiving, but after seeing George Floyd actually killed on TV put a bit of bitterness in my heart but when you're raised in a Christian way you can't Hate! I don't hate but now I know what Black people have actually experienced in this country and I'm Black so there are so many Blacks who were raised in a different type of household and religions and income status or socioeconomic status that don't know what other Blacks have had to endure in America and I'm one of them I'm a Senior, but I'm more educated than most Seniors around here where I live in Atlanta, GA. I have better health than a lot of Seniors and I still work I'm very technically literate as far as computers and Technology and I'm very proud that I am, but right now I can see that the Blacks in this country or actually hurting, but guess what I have been protesting right here in Atlanta and I'm a senior citizen and working at Fulton County Elections, but I'm healthy enough I'm well enough and I am passionate enough for the cause of change. I can say that the young Black people have really showed up and showed out, the only thing is that I found out that this Black lives matters is ran by George Soros and it's got a transgender and alternative lifestyle agenda and that bothers me! But, anyway all of my family is very on Galveston Island going all the way back to my great-grandmother who was living there in the 1850s I'll be up there once so my all of my history is actually in Texas but I love Atlanta this is the home of the civil rights movement and I've met some really nice people here but the black's that I live around right now are not very Progressive because they're sick they don't have covid-19, but they are not in good health I'm one of the healthiest Seniors who lives in this building. I drive I go to work everyday. I pray a lot, there are a lot of shootings of Blacks killing Blacks in Atlanta, GA unfortunately!

I'm so appreciative for the knowledge being shared. Dr Carr is definitely a valued griot right now. We need these classes.
Please talk about the original melanated people who were in the US way before Columbus from Africa, including the Olmecs. I had 3 strokes, so the words sometimes and names dissappear, but the tribes who lived in old Mexico (before they stole the land). I read those people were along with the natives who were stolen and slaved.
Forgive my cloudiness, it saddens me to have lost pieces of our knowledge.
    Please enlighten me.
