This is the best looking rig I've seen. Like yourself, I prefer a "run & gun" setup and your rig appears to more than satisfy the solution. I'm just before pulling the trigger on one of the Z Cams and this video only added to my excitement. Thanks for posting.
Liked and subbed! I really enjoyed the video, Mac. Thanks for making it! I've had my eye on Z Cam for only a couples months now. It's got such amazing features in such a small package at a very reasonable price tag too. They're really shaking things up.
Epic rig! I really like it. If I wasn't doing photography as well I'd consider switching to a system like this. Super practical for film making and well thought out. And as you said, the two Sigma Art zooms cover everything
Carefull: youre using the same battery to power camera and Monitor, you can BURN your HDMI at ANY TIME cause doing this the HDMI cable acts like a grounding and can very easily burn yout hdmi port. Take care bro, your kit looks and feels AWESOME! Use a different/separate battery for powering your monitor.
cool video.. I'm a little late to the party, but I just got a Red Komodo which is similar form factor to Zcam and this helped a lot with some rig ideas. Can I ask how did you get that custom handle design to SmallRig? I'd also like something that almost sits flush to the body so I can operate camera like a DSLR grip. Further away introduces more jitters imho
Love this setup. I have been shooting on the E2 with the Sigma 18-35 and 50-100 lenses for the past few months and I am in love with the combo. The footage that comes from thst camera/lens combo is almost unreal considering the price. I wish the highlight roll-off was better on the camera, but other than that I have no complaints.
I REALLY like this V-mount setup though. I currently am using an articulating V-mount plate on 15mm rails that sit behind the camera and the plate moves around way too much to use the battery as a contact point on my body without crushing all of the cables on the back of the camera. Too bad these are not actually available.
Kyle Evers for real. This camera is amazing for the price point. Personally I think the highlight roll off is very good. I’m also coming from a Sony a7iii so it makes sense haha. I know tilta is making a v mount for the e2 soon. So does fxlion but I heard that ones crap. I’ve recently been shooting with NPF 970s and it’s a nice change of pace. Small and light.
Mac Olink I tried shooting Zlog for the first time this weekend for a music video so hopefully that will help with the highlights, usually shoot on just Rec709 for most videos. But even then like I said this camera/lens combo is ridiculous considering the money. I am loving the look of the f1.2 (.71 speedbooster) at wider angles
Kyle Evers I always shoot rec 709. I feel like z log really isn’t necessary for what I do. BUT try shooting with a tiffen black pro mist (if you’re not already). That could help a little too
Hi Mac, I am looking into buying the 50-100, but I'm wondering what the footage lookalike when shooting it from the chest (like, pressing the rig against the chest). Is it usable? Or is it too shakey. I am hesitating between this one and the tank 70-200 by Canon. Let me know what your thoughts are! P.s. I absolutely loved this video. I think you've got a great voice. Cheers bud. Keep it up!
Thanks! I think it depends on how heavy your rig is. If you’ve got a heavy handheld setup, then the shakes won’t be too much of a problem. But if your setup isn’t that heavy, then the IS in the 70-200 will be a huge help
Subbed. Definitely looking at copping this camera sometike early next year. Im from Arizona trying to become a full time director of photography and photographer as well. Will there be a video of a whole build up and break down of both handheld and ronin s setups? Hopefully with links too? Looking to see how much I'mma really need to invest
@@MacOlink yeah I've never messed with small rig rigs yet. I usually only have used an Ursa Mini just free handed or an a7sii on ronin. However I've been really wanting to just invest into a whole cinema rig for my own (I've been using my schools equipment)
@@MacOlink Looks great! What did you use for the tabletop moves? Also a second question: Do you feel these Sigma lenses do well on this rig handheld with no stabilization? Wish the EVFs were more affordable. I'm old school and prefer eyepiece when doing hand-held. Thanks for all the links!
@@warrengentryassociatesinc.116 I shot everything in the video handheld on the GH5. The 18-35 performs great because the focal length is wider. The 50-100 is a bit more difficult, which is why I try to rig the camera to be heavier. However, if you were to use a shoulder rig you'd have no issues at all. The Sigma 24-70 Art is a lens I just picked up, that has OS built in, works great. I know Portkeys is also working on an EVF Eye Piece for the BM5. Not sure how much that is. But maybe that can fit what youre looking for?
Getting my e2 soon, can’t wait to shoot with it! And great rig set up! 2 questions for ya. 1) How is the speed booster working for you? Any issues? Didn’t really want to spend $650 on a metabones, but I don’t want junk either. 2) Port Keys BM5. I’ve read it can get pretty hot with brightness and the fan is loud. I do interviews in quiet locations. Would it be a problem? And I shoot a good portion of my broll in 120fps, does the BM5 playback at that rate? Thanks in advance!
Joshua Paul Mullins is spend the money on the metabones. It’s well worth it. The BM5 can get hot.. but that’s what it’s made to do. It’s a heat sync. If you set the fan to the lowest setting you can’t hear it at all. And yes, it can playback 120fps!
love the rig's but im not sure how your pulling focus whilst on the S as you have no gear or follow focus, I assume you don't stop your glass all the way down so you must have a FF but not have rigged it up for this video?
Spin City I do have a wireless follow focus BUT I don’t use it 99% of the time. I don’t use the ronin much either, like I said I’d prefer to use my Glidecam. I was just showing the versatility of this little camera. That being said, I set my focus point and maintain my distance between my subject when I am on glidecam/gimbal. Or I just shoot handheld.
My friend, thanks for the video. How can I place my Bebop 98 V-Mount battery on the Z Cam E2? I bought the FXLION Nano LNP V-Lock Converting Plate but to my horror it blocks the HDMI cable that goes to the Ninja Inferno. I see you use this strange/smart device designed (I believe) by some Z Cam expert, how can I get one? Or, how can I mount my v-mount battery without blocking HDMI? THANKS.
dan tolino you can attach the v mount plate i have in the Description to rods. That’s one way. Or, if you can sit tight for a few weeks tilta is releasing a v mount design. The one I’m currently using and z cam user designed. He’s trying to get the design made by smallrig as we speak!
Hey, was wondering if you really needed the counterweights or could have managed without them? I am currently looking at buying a new gimbal as the Weebill Lab just cant balance properly with the 18-35 and the E2. Would appreciate any other tips or notes you could add about mounting it. Im looking at a very light setup, could even not have the smallrig cage attached if not needed.
Max St John you can get away without using the counter weights if you use a really small NPF battery. But I’d suggest using the cage because the lens is so front heavy that you’ll need to slide the e2 real far back to achieve balance, and then you’ll block the back motor. I use the counterweights so I can use a bigger NPF battery without having the slide the camera too far back and it allows clearance of that motor. Hope that wasn’t too confusing, lol.
Mac Olink nope makes sense. I’ll be traveling with 2x 550s and one 970, but I'm totally fine using the smaller batteries for gimbal work. Does the start and stop record work on the gimbal or are we still waiting for z cam and DJI to get that working? If not what are you using to control the functions? Just the bm5? I'm thinking of just using my iPhone X on there.
Max St John I’m not sure if the start/stop works. At this point I don’t believe it does. But remember seeing the Z Cam team talking about that coming into effect soon. I just press the buttons on the camera. The ronin s is solid and can handle the light pressure of pushing the cameras buttons. But your iPhone would be a great tool as well!
