I knew right away which one was the RED in your opening comparison shots. The nicer highlights gave it away...especially the shot where you're standing in front of that white building and also the sky in a couple shots. Not to take anything away from the Zcam, but that increased dynamic range of the RED plus R3D make it an easy choice for me.

MKBHD made a really good video about image blind-tests. And people tends to prefer more contrasty and exposed images over inner quality.

Great video Paul! Thanks for taking the time to shoot and edit it. It would be great to see a comparison of the Komodo, F6 and Sony A7SIII. How about making that the next video? You'll get a lot of views because A7SIII is super popular. Cheers.

I thought the Z Cam was one degree better in color, if you look at the jackets the red Komodo is slightly faded than the Z Cam. But if somebody has to look so hard to find the differences maybe the Z Cam is better because of the price compared to the Komodo.

yeah! I understand the highlight roll-off, advantage and the more native cinematic look of the red but honestly
its an L for red because missing a shot due to it taking forever to boot doesn't help the hightlight rool off lol
the cons of the red that was stated at the end of the video is a pretty big deal breaker
as its vastly more expensive compared to the Zcam not to mention its limited frame rates variety

The value you get with z-cam is insane (I'm a RED DSMC2 owner, and I still picked one up). Especially when you consider that you're testing against the full-frame F6. If you look at the s35 S6, the cost goes down even more dramatically. That z-cam model is only $2500!. The cost of Komodo vs Z-Cam looks really, really bad on paper. But... HD-SDI, a bit more dynamic range, and R3D is awesome. No doubt. Does that make the Komodo system worth about double once configured? Personal choice I guess, but it doesn't make much sense to me. I don't see running either Komodo or Z-Cam as" A-cam" anyway. But, they are excellent options for supporting your main camera system. And if that's the goal, keeping the cost in check makes sense. In a couple years, new tech will tempt you to upgrade anyway. DSMC3, next generation Z-cam, etc.

Exceptional review/comparison and it exactly matches my feelings when comparing my Komodo and my friends F6 (technically we share most of our lenses and even swap cameras time to time). My friend was considering selling his Z-cam to get a Komodo and I talked him out of it cause they are actually quite good companions. I still need a still camera and since we have a ninja v+ for prores raw already I’m super leaning towards the R5 just cause it feels like it would be the ideal final companion (mainly cause I have the RF Trinity + the 28-70/f2 beast). If Z-Cam could figure out how to make a viable RF mount for their camera it would be amazing. That said. For cine lenses I’d get EF or maybe PL anyway to use with my kippertie revolva cause it’s so convenient. I still need the PL one, but my Komodo came with the hot rod RF-PL and I have no PL lenses yet so no reason to rush, especially because we already have a few EF lenses and it can still autofocus and stuff.
I really wish red would make a proprietary PL/i -> RF adapter. Given /i is only 4 pins, there is no possible way they can’t somehow adapt it. For now I’m thinking I’ll get the cyber vespid to do auto focus with the RS3 LiDAR though I’m sure it will work fine with non-electronic lenses. It’s just a waste to not capture that data.
Same reason I wish red would embed the gyro data into the codec since it totally has it and would make digital crop stabilization in post 1000x better. TBH I’m a bit frustrated by the way RED seems to be ignoring the Komodo over the V-Raptor in terms of expandability given it seemingly has the exact same top pinout and I’ve not seen a single accessory that makes use of all the pins, run stop only uses 2 and even the link adapter only uses like half. I’m almost positive it has everything it needs to support the DSMC3 monitor, especially given it’s literally a reshelled cine7 which I use with my Komodo (I also got the focus pro OLED just cause OLED is life, but outdoors it’s clear what wins).
I dunno if they just don’t wanna cannibalize raptor sales (which seems crazy since one is 5x the price) or it’s just too much work to do the firmware but it really annoys me. Heck, I’d be happy to just buy the friggen DSMC3 monitor arm and still do control and power external like I do now (since I assume part of the issue is the lower voltage from the Komodo batteries).
Mainly im just annoyed that it clearly has lots of untapped potential. Those pins gotta be for something. I’m also gonna try and work out a way to do camera control with the dji and red sdks. I’m sure it can be done, maybe with an active box like the RCP converter ignite makes for the R2/Movi Pro, I just have been too lazy so far.
I haven’t used it as much but I know there are way more control options for the F6 which makes no sense. Especially given the Komodo is a perfect gimbal cam and is even used for tons of press images on rs3 pro and similar gimbals.

Very good review as usual. Really, no one can go wrong with either camera they invest in today. It's really knowing your workflow, style and budget to decide which ecosystem to invest in. My decision was based on best tool for best budget and went with the zcam e2s6 and of course (we tend to defend our investment) no regrets. Especially right now due to the current world climate, their has been an increase in video streaming productions and that is a great feature zcam has with it's ability to do streaming out of camera. I can even use the in built video transmission to stream direct to OBS wirelessly without third party equipment, so for me that gave the edge in terms of business opportunity. Keep up the good work.

You should put Zraw to the test. To be fair atleast. I think you’re missing a ton of information 10-bit next to 16bit. I know Zraw is cumbersome at this stage but there is a very noticeable difference I feel between ProRes and Zraw. Other than that I think your review is great. I own s6. And S6g or Komodo is my next cam. R3D is making me want to go RED because I can’t wait for Zraw to get better or for more NLEs to work with.

BCam is much more color accurate, ACam has some greenish hue, haven't watched until the end or read comments so have no idea, but I would assume A is ZCam and B is the Komodo. Oh wow I had that backwards the ZCam is more color accurate on my 10 BIT IPS Panel than the Komodo... something doesn't add up there.

Man I really like the look of the zcam. I miss being in this eco system. Ultimately for me it just came down to lack of proper RAW support. Even if pores raw was available in resolve it would have maintained my patronage with zcam. But not being able to use the cameras best codec in the best color editor really limits what you can do.
So really R3D was the deciding factor. Such a shame RED holds a ridiculous patent over Compressed raw.
