He had no other option. Other than sit till next year. It doesn't matter anyway cause as soon as the bell rings when Jon Jones returns Tom or Curtis won't have a belt technically. The interim Champ is gone as soon as the undisputed champ returns. This is just a number 1 contenders match it's not a champ fight. Even at that Jon sounds like he wants Alex next so there is a chance Curtis and Tom won't get the next shot at the real belt.

It doesn't matter what Aspinal does, when Jones fights Stipe, the "Interim Belt" no longer exists. Aspinal is only the Interim Champ while Jones is out with injury and as soon as he starts his next fight, aspinal is no longer the interim Champ.
