- Last week the prosecution showed the jury the "sally port video" of Karen Read's SUV being brought into the police station. As it turns out, the video was inverted, a mirror image. Did it make a difference? Decide for yourself! You can watch the original version, which the prosecution witness acknowledged was a mirror version. Then, I've mirrored that video so you can see it as it should have been.
Did Karen Read murder her boyfriend John O’Keefe by mowing him down with her car -maybe even intentionally? Or is she being set up by a corrupt law enforcement officials trying to protect their own?
O’Keefe was found dead in the front yard of Boston police officer Brian Albert. Prosecutors say Karen dropped him off at a party at Albert’s house and then hit him with her car.

Along with my concern that Ms. Read gets a fair trial, it concerns me how poorly John O'keefe has been treated by his friends and fellow officers in death.
The only people who are treating John O'Keefe poorly are Karen Read, who incapacitated him and then chose to leave him to freeze to death alone rather than call 911, and her mob, when collectively choose on a daily basis to try to destroy innocent witnesses and first responders rather than simply accept responsibility and apologize. Karen Read should get the maximum sentence on each count and consecutive rather than concurrent sentences for these abuses.
This is just unfathomable.

He was supposedly their friend but Matt says in text: Make sur to tell them " that man " didnt go in the house. The justice for John gets lost in all this tampering with evidence. They are no friends that anyone needs in their lives.

Anyone even attempting to justify this behavior is being disingenuous. It is not credible that a surveillance system for LE is hard-set on motion-activated, mirror image recording. That is ludicrous. Acquit KR, sanction MSP/DA/ADA.

Seeing the video from this vantage point just adds fuel to fire for a coverup. Lally should have pointed this out from the onset.
We still can’t see what is going on in the rear passenger corner , people back there , a door opens ,who came in or went out this video is not evidence of any substance .

I honestly don’t understand why this is not considered tampering with evidence. And I hope the jury is PISSED that they have been lied to and manipulated. It means you clearly can’t trust the prosecution, the investigation, the cops involved, maybe even the judge. This whole trial is a sham!
Of course it made a difference. We were thinking they were no where near it but in reality that’s where they were hanging around for most of the time. As a juror I would be hard pressed to believe what the CW says now.

I know your pain. My father died when I was young, My brother died of pancreatic cancer before my mother who had dementia. It was my joy to take care of her those last several years. My middle brother died of lung cancer after two years of chemo. I am a sole survivor. I'm a military veteran, from a military family that also includes law enforcement. Anyone who says that the. extent of a coverup couldn't possibly happen, has either never been part of a "brotherhood", or who simply has no concept of how strong the ties are. You will, absolutely, put your life on the line for your brother to protect him and/or his own. I find this presentation almost unbelievable, far more egregious than attempting to cover up an accidental death (HOWEVER, NOT from framing an innocent person who is just hot part of your clan or brotherhood). This misrepresentation to the jury is inexcusable, imo, and there is absolutely no way, at this level of a trail, that this was an accident. IMO, the police in this area are used to not being questioned.

It’s not altered if that’s the way that the LE motion activated surveillance system records the data file. Lally will have the opportunity to address this in re-direct.

@@Ima.UnicornI'm coming into this kinda late. Did they say that this was a mirror image when it was presented? The letters on the police car are backwards and so is the number 4 on the door. I think if they weren't told that it was mirrored that doesn't seem right to me.

I wonder if they used it to remove foot prints. Whose blood was in the snow? This reminds me of the bad man that terrorized a town he was killed in front of his wife in public but nobody saw anything and nobody ever told who killed him. Where are the photographs of the rear passenger taillight? You would think they would have taken photos as soon as they saw the vehicle at Karen's parents house... being they were there to take her vehicle as evidence.
As someone said on another discussion - I took more photos of a tree that fell on my garage - multiple photos from every conceivable angle - than this investigation team took of Karen's vehicle that they say killed JO!
As far as I know the tow truck company is obligated to take pictures all away around the vehicle before putting it on the truck and after taking it off the truck. Where are those pictures??

As soon as the judge was made aware of the mirrored video, how did she not excuse the jury and ask Lally a few questions?!?
The mirror image video is the original, unaltered video, so the rules of evidence require that this version be admitted into evidence. The flipped version is actually altered, so it can likely only be used as an aid. There is nothing unethical about the mirror image video. It is simply the result of either the set up of security camera and mirrors in the sallyport, or the software of the recording system that lacks the feature of flipping the camera images. All camera images are mirror image

You don't believe that the prosecution has a duty to advise the jury that the video is mirrored, even when the taillight is such a large part of this trial?

That's very odd to me. Particularly as the time stamps appear to be added after downloading.
Most judges (outside the presence of the jury) will put on record why the lawyers submitted the mirrored video instead of the real one into evidence. With this judge it is not clear if she will do so voluntarily. I suspect if she does not, Defense will have a motion to compel CW to respond on record.
I know this issue has come up in other cases involving sallyport video. It is most likely because of the set up of the security mirrors and cameras, or the recording software the police use lacks the feature to flip the images. All camera images are mirror image. I agree it would have been more helpful for the prosecutor to let everyone know in advance that the original unaltered video is mirror image and there will be an altered , flipped version in the future. But there is no misconduct here. The flipped version shows the men on the passenger side standing by the door, not the vehicle.
This video matters for three reasons. Its inverted shows police near tail light. It has sections spliced out and the timecode may or may not be authentic. Hoping we get more details come Monday
I thought sections were spliced from the video as well, and I'm not completely sure they aren't, but I researched how Ring video detects motion and begins recording and stops when it times out. There are different options available though ring settings for the recording duration before timing out (stopping). After motion is detected,10min is the longest record duration setting before timing out and 20sec is the shortest record duration before timing out. It will begin recording again when motion is detected. I need to read more as the settings can differ between the two extremes noted. It's possible the camera set-up was out of the box default which would auto timeout 120s after motion is detected.
The mirroring matters because it was not clarified by Lally and was not an accurate representation of the scene the day it was recorded. Deceptive CW play😡!!!
The Sally port is not motion activated. It has already been established that it records continuously.
Ideally we'd hear from a digital video expert on what could be learned from the raw digital encoding stream. For example it might indicate how much if any is actual original recording, what internal relative time information might be available and how it compares with the added time displayed, etc.

When they found the car, why did they not take pictures of the tail light at her house?
Yes! Right? Shoddy police work not to do that. Don't they watch CSI, Law & Order, 48 Hours, etc? They could learn a few tips! And didn't Read or her defense say there is Ring camera footage of her backing into a car, which she says is how they tail light got broken? I am losing track of all the details in this case!

Because it didn't support the cover up. HOWEVER, they didn't consider the tow truck driver would ever be called, and they certainly didn't think he'd have looked at the damage on the car (which most all tow truck drivers do, they document body damage, to cover their own liability).
I was framed by San Mateo, California cops about 12 years ago- I felt it best to move overseas once I realized that after being a model citizen with a successful contracting business for a dozen years, I was not safe from the people I was paying to keep me safe.

Oh, so if I DON'T pay misdemeanor fine or no show to court, I'll have warrant for my Arrest, so then qualify for a public defender? Lol. I just needed assistance to get the 'four witness statements' but the ADA said they had none, and 'nothing was put in writing.' Ummmm.... My public defender got it dismissed with prejudice. I then sent a FOIA request to the centralized doc place and what do ya know? I'm now a hermit... Agoraphobic.

Ok, I rewatched the video. The car came in, someone opened the door from the inside but didn't come out. Then, there's a cut in the video. A guy came, opened the driver door, took a look inside and shut it.... And there's a bunch of left-handed people shovelling the snow... Not sus at all

Yes, it makes a difference. For one thing, Bukenick fraudulently testified that the mirrored video was an "accurate description" of the scene.
"In regards to snow and ice on the vehicle." It seemed like an odd qualifier at the time but makes perfect sense now.
And video is cut several times.

After the car stops the "driver side door" opens but the video is cut before the driver gets out....The prosecution deliberately edited this video to prevent the viewers from seeing the driver getting out, to make it less likely that the viewers would see that the video was a reverse mirror view. Also, the time/date stamp at the bottom of the video was NOT reversed, which means the video was deliberately edited to make the time/date stamp look normal. The prosecution tampered with this video evidence. FOR SURE!

My problem is 1. The tow truck driver wasn’t driving after it was implied that he was. 2. There is a snowy outline of a car on the floor of a heated garage. (What car covered in snow did they have in there, backed out, left snow and hadn’t melted.) 3. If the tow driver testifies that he drove the car into the garage, it means the car got driven in more than once. That would make sense because after the tow driver took the car off the bed, he would have driven in, TB said the tow driver was the only one with access. Why would anyone be in the passenger’s seat? 4. If any of that happened, no breaking of the taillight would be on the shown part of the video and any pieces could have been collected in time to get them to the search area to be ‘found’.

The fact that the prosecution failed to point out that this video was mirrored and instead asked the witness is this was a fair and honest view of what happened that night, is where the problem is.
ADA Lally took up to 2 years to turn discovery over to the defense. Judge Bev didn’t rule on some defense motions for weeks, but ruled on prosecution motions (in prosecution’s favor) immediately.
Why was there a rectangle of snow before the car was pulled in? Yes definitely a new perspective.

What amazes me is that you found a way to show this to us in its correct version. So this leads me to believe that the inversion was completely intentional, so that the jurors couldn't clearly see that there we people around the passenger side tail light.
This kind of thing doesn’t happen “accidentally.” The cops and prosecutors need long prison sentences. She is being railroaded and the prosecutor knows it.

Maybe that brushed off snow was what they cleared up from the sallyport floor. Maybe what we saw was the second time Karen's car had been driven in. The cut off crime tape then put round the car was conveniently just the right length.

It is simply the rules of evidence. The mirror image video is the original, unaltered video, so it must be entered into evidence first. The flipped version is actually altered, so it can only be entered second if at all. The flipped version clearly shows that no one touched the vehicle
I don't think it's the mirroring that's the problem, it's the fact that Lally didn't make it clear that it was mirrored. The jury was under the impression that the passenger side was untouched by law enforcement whereas in reality there were cops standing right by it for some time. If nothing else, it will make the jury distrust the prosecution.

I don’t know why, but all of a sudden there seemed to be people standing by that rear light all the time! Strange how that became so much clearer when my brain fully understod that it was the side of the driver that we saw fronting the camera. 😮

She should also be investigated, specially if there are private prisons in that town, cause who knows how many others they’ve framed out there and we can now clearly see it ! It is clear deception by prosecutor whether it was intentional or not. This case should be dismissed so that no more time, money and resources are wasted.
They were trying to make it look like no one was around the passenger taillight and reversed the video to make it look like that person was at the driver's side taillight and got busted.

This kind of made me sad and angry for the victim’s family, sitting there, unable to do anything about how the state handles the death of their loved one. I can’t imagine! It’s tough enough to have to wait years. They will probably feel that their loved one's killer was either the wrong person or possibly will be let loose because of gross incompetence. Note that at 7:28 on Lawyer Lee's video, someone walks into the garage on the left side of the screen at the front of the vehicle - and abruptly turns around and leaves. Sean McDonnaugh posits that this person is Officer Devers (formerly with Canton PD, now at Boston PD) and that this is the moment she walks in and maybe hears/sees them smash the tail light. No idea if this is true. Is Devers on either of the witness lists?
She was on defence witness list last I saw as potentially calling.

Never seen so many people interested in cleaning the floor. We can clearly see another car that same size was just in that spot… clean it up boys , clean-it -up !!
I absolutely think that car had already been in the Sally port. The outline of the snow was the exact size of Karen's car. If you watch the video from the beginning, when the tow truck driver closed the driver door the snow fell directly into the outline. Also look at the crime scene tape, it was already perfectly cut to size and it was not taken from the role!

I think it is so shady that at the very, very end of the CORRECT PERSPECTIVE video, like in the last 2 seconds, the officer taking an especially close look at the DRIVERS SIDE TAILLIGHT is sooooo suspicious!! Oh my gosh Lee, thank you for that. I understand intellectually that it was a big deal, but I couldn’t really conceptualize it. That is like watching 2 different videos.

I think it was intentional because it takes the focus off the tail light in question and the people hidden from the camera near it. They do appear to have been prepared for people to notice, though they weren't going to point it out, but hoped no one would notice.....this is why they likely opted not to further doctor it like fixing the police logo and number 4 on the wall, as that would make it unquestionably intentional.
The worst thing about this is, let's assume for argument's sake that she is the responsible party and should be found guilty. This alone introduces so much solid reasonable doubt that any conviction, if one comes to pass, is a leaf in a hurricane.

No doubt. I don’t know if she’s factually innocent or not, but I sure believe that there has not been evidence presented to the court to prove her as guilty.
Those cops guaranteed that Officer O'Keefe would never get justice. Just their shoddy evidence collecting is enough for reasonable doubt- no matter who the defendant is, or how guilty

In addition to the inverted image making a huge difference, the amount of time that passed with people milling around the passenger rear side of the vehicle, and when the caution tape was placed is massive. Doesn’t prove a cover-up but certainly casts reasonable doubt on the Commonwealth’s case

The inverted video makes it look as though no one was near the right rear tail light when in fact the opposite is true. This is significant in that the prosecution and Canton police insist there is no cover up, no one interferring with the right tail light, and no one planting evidence.

This video was deceptive. It misrepresented the drive / passenger sides of the car. I can't believe this was allowed without context.
I think the tail light was broken into pieces before the car was pulled into the garage, they knew they could choose the furthest camera from the passenger tail light for evidence in trial.
It made a huge difference to me to see the video un-inverted or, as it was actually filmed.
This case is just a disaster all around. Waste of tax payers dollars (including me), waste of everyone’s time and unjust. Lock the real culprits away and FREE KAREN READ! What an embarrassment these ppl are to our community.
that did help, because even after knowing, the mind still interprets what the eyes see. and when you present something confusing to jurors who are tired and stressed out from a long trial, this could still slip past them like it almost did for me. I'm also concerned about seeing people just "poof" and vanish or appear as if it was missing some footage?
