The older I get, the more the line "It's sad and it's sweet and I knew it complete/When I wore a younger man's clothes" means to me.
It's pure poetry. I feel the same.
No fucking kidding. One can only imagine what song that fictional man was thinking about. But it applies to every age and every era..
Gets me everytime
I’m 61 now and remember my brother playing Billy Joel albums. I know what you mean by your comment and the older I get. Kind of like that song Bob Seger did “night moves“
61 yrs old. Piano bars were a thing in the 70's. Billy Joel was Huge. Miss those days. Even tho' this song is kinda sad, they were much happier times...I feel sorry for the kids now. They don't seem to socialize very much with each other. Except texting and tech stuff.
You will like Billy's "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant".
It is Billy Joel’s favorite.
The best of his songs when it comes to telling a story.
Most underrated Billy Joel song
@@matthawkins8880 Absolutely. I had heard that too. My wife wants to argue this point, but she is wrong....
Great song!
This man has a deep library, Rome.
Every single song was written, composed and performed by Billy, himself!🤯
Very few artists can make that claim.🤔
The dude is the real thing. So, so many good songs and this one is downright iconic.
Prince
yeah you cant go wrong with Billy or Elton John... both are legends..
Well, all, or most, but we all know that Mr. Freddie Mercury himself was also in this small league of talent, and genius...😲☺️😊🎶🎶🎶
@@daddyoca69 The same cannot be said for Elton John (Reginald Dwight) Unlike Billy Joel he cannot write lyrics. So without the sublime wordsmith Bernie Taupin you would not even know that Reginald Dwight existed
“She’s Always A Woman” is another really good one from Billy Joel…promise your beautiful wife will love it ✌️💚
Honesty is another great song!
@@ghidrah76 😊💕...such a lonely word...
My favorite Billy Joel love song is "You're My Home."
It's my favorite Billy Joel song. But it's funny - the girl that it was about for me I told her about it just a couple years ago, and she kinda thought it was not very flattering to her. It isn't, but then again it is, if you get the gist of of it's overall meaning.
💯
This man finds out who can only afford the cheapest seats at his concerts and moved them to the front. Legend.
"She's Always A Woman" is amazing, but everything Billy Joel does is astonishing. Deep poetry in catchy tunes.
Billy Joel is an ICON. One of the greatest musicians of his time. Follow his musical path, you won't be sorry.
_Scenes From An Italian Restaurant_ is one of my favorites from him.
The live version
Absolutely
Definitely one of my favorites
Billy Joel simply a LEGEND!
Billy Joel is a genius.
THERE!
I finally said what everyone's been afraid to say all these years.
L.O.L.
enjoy your dive into his music. you will NOT be disappointed.
Billy wrote this as a tribute to his days as a real piano man before he made it big
. He said he heard and saw so many stories of so many people.
Get ready. Great catalog to explore. Almost endless! And in his retirement he plays 1 show per month at Madison square garden. He said he’d stop when he stops selling out. He did 55+ shows before stopping for Covid and he’s coming back now! And yes, he was awesome. He actually does an audience choice, gives 2 options and whichever song gets more applause he performs! And he always brings a surprise guest to do a song with him. If you’re ever in NYC definitely get tickets!
Genius song . Based on a true story he worked in a piano bar for a year I think
Classic Billy Joel. Great reaction. Another good Billy Joel song to react to is Matter of Trust.
She's Always a Woman and Uptown Girl both need a listen
And we didn't start the fire. A must listen to. Especially today's time
Billy Joel ... the rabbit hole is DEEP!
Best story-telling songwriter ever
You have heard Billy Joel singing about a bar. Now you need to listen to Billy Joel singing about an Italian restaurant. "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant." Another big hit from him.
I believe it was Tony Bennett who said billy Joel has written a great American song book
Vienna is one of the wisest songs I've ever heard. Give it a listen
Totally agree!
The rabbit hole is deep for this guy . One of my favorites by Billy is ... " You may be right " .
you got to listen to Billy Joel - New York state of mind !!! ;-)
It's more than just a good bar song. It's a lyrical and musical masterpiece. I often reflect on life as I listen to Piano Man as it paints haunting pictures of people's heartache and unrealized dreams. And the melody and singing are perfection.
'Wow' is the correct reaction to hearing this song for the first time.. Billy Joel is a timeless artist.
One of the great songs of our time.
Billy Joel is/was a bloody genius! He is brilliant.
"Bill I believe this is killing me, as a smile ran away from his face"... such a sad reality in a midst of a song, an emotion captured in a moment.
Pure poetry. He says so much in that line with just a few words.
@@analogblues Tells a story in once sentence. It is pure poetry~
Don't make me cry, that line kills me.
Billy Joel is a master lyricist. So many great songs.
Love Billy Joel anytime.😀❤️
More Billy Joel: Honesty
Honesty is a great treasure. It's sad that many people don't have honesty anymore, especially in these times. Billy Joel is truly a great writer capturing moments.
You were so captivated you never paused. This is a classic bar song. When it plays at a bar most people will automatically raise their drinks in the air and sing as loud as they can
Billy Joel has a great catalog. Enjoy the journey
One of his most powerful songs is I think "Goodnight Saigon" and one of his most vulnerable songs is "So it goes", and when I want to let loose and dance, his song "I go to extremes".... just a few of my favorites... My all time favorite is "Scenes from an Italian restaurant" . Peace and love
Yes
I saw him live in Melbourne Australia in an outdoor stadium.....and when he sang "Goodnight Saigon", the sound f the helicopters in the summer night air was so realistic....I love that song. He didn't have veterans singing along with him at that time(I believe it was around 1987)...but it is such a meaningful song. You really can't go wrong with Billy.
Rome,
There was a period there from the 70's to the mid 80's that no one, and I mean no one, could touch Billy Joel.
Every Billy Joel song is quality. This is his biggest hit but he's got B-sides most people haven't heard that are just as great if not better.
Billy was one of the musicians I grew up on, but I never seen that vid.
This isn't the original Piano Man video. It was shot in the 80s. Theres an older version from the 70s
Best concert I've ever been to was Billy Joel and Elton John together when I was 15. 80k people carrying the chorus to Piano Man is absolutely magical
Me too! The best concert ever! So fun!
Holy crap... those two together?! It's a wonder the whole audience wasn't transported straight to Heaven... though I suppose y'all at least visited. ;)
Was lucky enough to see them each alone (Billy once. Elton 3 times) and 3 times together. Great shows!
Ugh, I tried to get tickets to that tour, and Ticketmaster fucked up my order over the phone. There's a reason people lovingly called them "Ticketbastard."
@@joeday4293 Had that happen with a Bon Jovi concert getting tkts online. I'm sure you understand how pissed I was!
This was Billy Joel's first big hit. It's a perfect song.
"N.Y. State of Mind" live from the old grey whistle is amazing and a MUST review
Could not agree more! Great recommendation.
Old Grey Whistle Test was the name of the show
Absolutely
The official hymn of NYC!
Keeping the faith is a hidden gem.
Great song, but not so hidden. It was on the charts
My favorite song from Billy Joel
Never occurred to me that everyone doesn't know this song. Because of work and family, I never even stepped into a bar until I was 39. I had taken a country line dancing class and a co-worker talked me into going. Didn't take too long to realize that I had an escape even though I didn't drink. I made friends, danced and was able to forget the world. Unfortunately, it was sold and it's just an empty building. Now I'm 57 and terminally ill...I crave that same thing...a place to forget what is happening. Thanks for doing this reaction. Sending warm regards from Kentucky. 💙
Billy Joel was huge in the 70s 80s and early 90s. Talent beyond belief
His final album of original material was The River of Dreams in 1993. He still tours today at 72.
Allentown, Movin Out, New York State of Mind, The Longest Time, Its Still Rock and Roll, I Go To extremes, We didn't start the fire, and many more. He is a legend

This entire album is a work of art.

You cannot miss with the 70's & 80's
95% of his tunes are kick ass. An American treasure for sure, IMO
First concert ever was Billy Joel in 1982. Fantastic live performer. Favorite song New York State of Mind.
Mine was Billy in 1993. Seen him two dozen times since. The best of all time!
I think "Innocent Man" is his best vocals, and "River of Dreams" has the catchiest tune. YMMV.
Another great song from Billy Joel is “A matter of trust”
3:00. And then it hit you. You went from ‘this is a nice song with a good melody’ to ‘shit I better listen to these lyrics’. Such a great song. Such a great artist. More Billy please. One of your best reactions.
Years ago my youngest son went to a concert - Dueling Pianos with Billy Joel and Elton John. He said it was one of the greatest concerts he had ever been to, he said that Billy Joel was the better piano player by far, Elton was talented but Billy just rocked it. He is on wish list to see in concert.
I played in a band for 10 years. I play piano and guitar and sing. I’ve played all over. Worked all day and played music all night. Extremely enjoyable and unbelievably exhausting. I relate exactly to Billy Joel’s song “the entertainer”. Incredible song.
This song is so iconic.
Portugal here. Thanks for reacting. Salutes.
Probably one of the most widely known songs ever. Enjoy, his music runs forever.
Oh! And don't forget "Pressure", "Only the Good Die Young", "Just the Way You Are", "Movin Out", "The Longest Time". James, it goes on forever!
And the song "James", a great album track about a broken friendship
My daughter and I saw him in concert in San Antonio back in 2016. He plays harmonica and piano at the same time. ♥️
On the Biggest Selling Musical Acts list, Billy Joel sits at #7. That puts him ahead of Michael Jackson. If that doesn't tell you about how many records the man has sold, nothing will.
I LOVE when you started to, I assume, realise he was telling a proper story when he got to John the bartender 😁
Yeah, I noticed the change in his facial expression at that point, too.
@@carojayess1723 Yeah, I'd scrolled down for a moment and when I scrolled up he'd stopped bobbing and was transfixed and I had to chuckle.
Exactly! I wish he had talked more about how he felt in that moment, instead of identifying people he saw in TV shows.
Billy is such a classic artist. He is a rabbit hole all by himself. Grew up.in Hicksville NY on Long Island. My Dad went to high school with him.
I’m jealous of your dad😂
I went to Holy Trinity Diocesan High School in Hicksville, LI in the late 80's, and the legend is that he was dating one of the "good Catholic girls" and used to come on school property only to be thrown out and barred. Hence, 'Come out Virginia, don't make me wait, you Catholic girls start much too late' (ah, not in my time)........ Good times; we also cruised the 'Miracle Mile' There was really nothing else for a teenager to do at that time and in that place.
If you look at the highest selling music artists in the United States, Billy Joel comes in at number 7, between Michael Jackson and Elton John. He is HUGE. And yet, in the reaction area, he rarely gets listened to. I saw an article once that pointed out how much of an influence he has been on many rappers as well. Because in the 1970s, before rap was big nationally, he was the one singing the music of the streets -- the music of regular people dealing with regular issues -- not just love and heartbreak, but everyday life. And he did it in a very relatable way.
I grew up in the 70s and 80s, and his music was a big part of that soundtrack.
I got a chance to see him live just a few years ago at Wrigley Field. It was an almost-religious experience. And he continues to sell out large venues.
Of course, I'm a piano player, so I'm partial to him because of his piano skills -- far beyond most. But it seems like he gets too little love nowadays. He was a transformational figure.
So yeah, check out anything by him. A few of my favorites that I think you'll enjoy include "Scenes From an Italian Restaurant," "Goodnight Saigon," and "New York State of Mind." Others that are less epic, but still worth a listen include "She's Always a Woman," "Just the Way You Are," and "Honesty." There are many others. To be honest, you can't go wrong with about anything from him.
I hope to hear more of him here.
He's singing about everyday people, singing about life. He has soooooooo many good songs.
When this plays every one sings. ‘They’re sharing a drink they call loneliness but it’s better than drinking alone.’ I think we’ve all been there.
One of the best songs ever written, and he sang them all perfectly, hey Billy.
Listen To Billy Joel's "You're only human". Song saved my life!
Was that you in the video
@@miketocci No but have had some really low points and this song has kept me going!
@@jonhoward8087 Me too. This is one of those songs that can help you keep.some perspective in bad times. The video is pretty goofy, but so many of those 80's videos were. The song is great, but not as popular as maybe it should be. I think it's because it's one of only two new songs from his 1985 Greatest Hits Vol. I & II album, so that kind of buries it among his other stuff.
Great storytelling and catchy piano tunes. Don't stop here; there's many more to enjoy
I love, love, love this song! Billy Joel is one of the most talented artists ever! He has so many beautiful songs! Try "She's got a way",and "Honesty"!
A timeless classic, from 74-75 and still relevant today..
One of the most "real" songs ever. He was writing about his career. Amazing musician.
Billy Joel is a very rewarding rabbit hole.
🎶🎵🎶 🎹🎙 Harm me with Harmony and Harmonica
You need to listen to Billy Joel’s album The Stranger. That entire album has hit after hit on it and it’s personally one of my favorite music albums of all time.
Agreed. Same.
Same.
I do like The Stranger but Turnstiles is my favourite Billy Joel album.
The Stranger and 52nd Street back-to-back are a freakin' opera.
true, it was one of the first record albums i ever bought when i was young, not 1 bad song on it.
One of his many signature tunes. Billy conquered hid native New York before he conquered the world. Billy does not like doing this song live anymore except when his fans sing along with him with every lyric and note!
The Entertainer is another great Billy Joel in the same vein.
"I've played all kinds of palaces and laid all kinds of girls"
The Entertainer rocks!!!
Billy Joel was my first concert @ 12 yrs old ! I won tickets from the radio in Seattle. I saw so many awesome bands in the 80’s ! Such great memories!
Scenes from an Italian restaurant is one of my favorites from Billy.
This was my Dad's favorite artist, Happy Father's Day, I miss you. I took he and my Mom to see Billy Joel and Elton John dueling pianos at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee and the show ended with a rousing sing along of Piano Man. Give a listen to Scenes From an Italian Restaurant. That reminds my Mom of their favorite Italian Restaurant. Billy Joel is part of the soundtrack of their lives. Thanks for playing that❤️
💜🎶💜🎶💜
Billy has tons of great music. One of the great storytellers.
One of the most beautiful love songs - you're my home by Billy Joel.
One of the all time great songs in my opinion. It never gets old. Billy Joel is simply amazing.
the Live from Long Island version of his Scenes from an Italian Restaurant is nearly life-changing.
I've always seen this song as an ode to broken dreams and they way people cope with the loss of them.
Everyone has a story. One of Billy Joel's Best songs for sure.
*Vienna* from Billy's album. "The Stranger" is really soulful and full of pathos.
The level of talent in the 60's and 70's was astounding.
It still is, but the current system makes it harder for songwriters to make money.
@@matthawkins8880
It should be easier today with the internet and the various digital platforms around today. I haven’t seen or heard anything that resembles the talent of yesteryear
@@Lab-Rat You're not looking in the right places then. Why would there be less artistic talent today than in the past?
Less art that suits your taste doesn't mean there's less art.
Just because technically or technology makes it easier today in making music, does not mean it would be better music coming out through radio or the internet.
I have a Theory why their is less artistic talent today than the 60’s , 70’s ,80’s and 90’s , because back then their was less to distract from the music industry, now people have other avenues for entertainment, I remember in the 70’s the music stores where packed on Saturday’s , then in the 80’s the arcades gave people other options for entertainment. Now In 2021 , people have a slew of options, where music in no longer paramount in their lives.
One of my favorite songs, i was the chartbreaker :) in a karaoke bar on Malta. Was great fun, and at the end all did sing with me, like in the song video.
My favorite Billy Joel song.
Try Billy Joel’s “Honesty”
He has so many incredible songs, you could probably react to nobody but him for like ten years straight! 🤣
I don’t let people talk when “Piano Man” starts playing.
After the failure of his first album (Cold Spring Harbor) due to it being recorded at too fast a speed, Billy disappeared to try and get out of his recording contract with Family Productions, so he spent 6 months playing piano under the name Bill Martin in a bar in Los Angeles. He wrote Piano Man about the people he encountered and observed in the bar during that time.
Artie Ripp, scumbag from Family Records, really did his best to screw artists over. Cold Spring Harbor, after being corrected for speed, is a really good album. Especially for being written by a 21 year old kid. Tomorrow Is Today and Got To Begin Again are two of my favorite songs of all time, by any artist.
No one tells a story quite like Billy Joel. I believe he wrote this from when he was doing this very thing, playing for tips in bars. One of the best storytellers and musicians out there with an incredible list of songs/hits. As a writer I've admired and learned from his simplicity in telling stories about every day life. The way he lays it out is straight to the point yet takes you on the relatable journey with him.
Storytelling level 1,000,000! 🐐
that moment when the reality of the music becomes clear, it changes everything
Billy Joel is awesome! I saw him perform live about 20 years ago! One of my all time favorites by him is a song he wrote for his wife at the time, called Uptown Girl! His wife was a super model named Christy Brinkley! Shes been on Sports Illustrated swimsuit cover many times and HE put her n this video! U will love!!!
"Allentown" is a good one from him as well. Wow, your stunned reaction to this speaks volumes. Great tune, huh?
The song is a true story from his own life. He's not just telling the stories of other people, he's telling his own story.
This is autobiographical. He played in a bar before he "hit it big". One of the best songs ever written. Period.
He was playing under a pseudonym due to contract dispute.
I agree. This is one of the all-time great songs. The storytelling is just phenomenal.
You could pick just about any track from the Billy Joel catalog and you could never go wrong. This is definitely a feel good song. I remember when I use to go to the bar here this song would be played every Friday night and the bar would be pretty full. And it would have just about everyone singing along.
Nice reaction, Billy Joel is one of the best song writers of all time, so many hits. He just resonates with the common person!
