Jude in the song is referring to John Lennon’s son Julian. Paul McCartney wrote it for Julian to console him during John’s divorce with his first wife (Julian’s mom) and courtship of Yoko Ono, who would become John’s second wife.
Thanks for that because i was about to look for the historical background on the lyrics of this song,it makes much more sense knowing this.
I was talking about this song to a friar in rehab. An alternative meaning is about Saint Jude-
In the Roman Catholic Church, he is the patron saint of desperate cases and lost causes.
There's a documentary I saw in the 90's called "Pop and Me", I'll spare you the long synopsis, but it's basically a father and son travelling around the world and interviewing father's and sons about their relationships. They randomly got to interview Julian Lennon, and it was one of the most chilling things I'd ever seen. "I respect what the Beatles did, and the message of love they tried to communicate, but my father never had any love for me." When you put into context of how Sean was later the golden child that was showered in love, and Julian the forgotten or ignored son...
So the song is consoling a child for the loss of his dad's attention and affection. The child is is severe pain Nd the song is about pain.
Jude is Julian Lennon and he was indeed in need of a huge hug. He's 58 now and probably still could use that hug .

The backstory is simple. John Lennon’s son was watching his parents split, and his father go off with Yoko. His sadness-he was six-was the impetus to this song. Paul was (and still is, I guess) “Uncle Paul.” It’s for a small child.

Jude is Julian Lennon- John Lennon's son...It was originally called Hey Jules but they changed it. It was a song written by Paul McCartney to comfort John's son after John broke up with his mother.

I've been listening to the Beatles for going on 39 years. It's sort of odd and wonderful that I never get tired of their music! They were the absolute best.
It isn't a sad song. It is a motivational song. It says "take a sad song and make it better". He is urging you to NOT make it bad. Love. That is what he is saying. So cry happy tears.
So on point! For me it took years to notice; since then it's just the saddest sounding happy song that was ever #1! (*that week)
As far as emotions, music is whatever it invokes in the listener. Telling them they’re having the wrong emotion is just wrong headed

Great reaction! Paul McCartney wrote, 'Hey Jude' for Julian Lennon the son of Paul's song writing partner, friend and fellow Beatle- John Lennon. At the time Julian was quite young and his parents were divorcing. 'Take a sad song and make it better'. It was also written as advice from Paul to his friend John. 'You have found her now go out and get her' in reference to John's love for artist Yoko Ono. At this same time the Beatles were breaking up- they each wanted their own lives. 'You were waiting for someone to preform with'. Basically it is a sort of ray of sunlight through the dark clouds type song.

Jude was Julian yet also all us as well. Like Mrs Robinson. Like a story within a story and a fractal within a fractal and ripples within ripples. This has rippled back to us today the same story. It took so long for the ripples to float away at the end of the song with the super slow fade out. Hey Jude is a bittersweet, emotional rollercoaster. The melodies are both sad and uplifting, the lyrics address pain and offer a positive message to work through it. The shout chorus at the end is a joyous release of encouragement. Your mom felt all of that. Anyone who has a soul is going to feel something when they hear this song.
I like your mom. Does she do these often? She seemed to get it almost immediately without knowing the backstory. She is wise and you would best be served asking and taking her advice on things while you have her. Hope to see more from her.

First of all, your mom is absolutely beautiful. And this is just another example of how The Beatles have so many moods and styles and themes and ideas that they are the gift that keeps on giving even tho they were only a band for less than 10 years.

Jude was John Lennon's son Julian who was living with his mom, Cynthia when John (his dad) left them for Yoko Ono. Paul was going out to visit Julian and Cynthia and started this song on the way there. He wanted to tell Julian all would be ok. Julian got turned into Jude. Later, when John heard it he believed Paul wrote it for him and Yoko. So the song has meaning to many. But it was originally intended to cheer Julian up.
I instantly started to cry when I saw the title of your reaction video. Not because the song is sad but because I think anyone can relate to this. I honestly believe that Sir Paul McCartney created one of the most important inspirational songs ever. I’m with your mom. I’d love to give Julian Lennon a hug and I definitely need one myself. I first saw The Beatles on Ed Sullivan when I was 7-- saw them 2 years later, live, my first concert ever, at 9. I grew up with them. I've never seen anyone cry listening to Hey Jude. But I'm a lot older now, and this was so touching. Thank you for posting this, bro. Don't take it down. Your Mom is beautiful-- give her a hug from all of us.
I'm with you. The Beatles plane first touched down on American Soil on my 12th birthday, February 7, 1964. Two days later they made their first live appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. What a birthday weekend that was for me, and what an initiation into my teenage years !!

Hey James' mom! This isn't necessarily a sad song. It was written by Paul McCartney who is lead singing. He wrote this song for John Lennon's son, Julian. John and Cynthia Lennon were going through a divorce and Paul wrote this song for John's son explaining that things will be okay and to take the world by storm. Julian was nicknamed Jules, but Hey Jules sounded funny to Paul, so he altered the name to Jude.

I think her reaction was very sweet and she was quite in tune with the song’s meaning. I’d never thought of it as a sad song but knowing the back story now ( thanks to comment below) she got it. I’ve followed Julian for quite a while now and was so sad for him when Cynthia died not long ago. He’d stayed a faithful son and both got a raw deal from John. ❤️

I put the video on and i was picking up the remote to sit down. Your mother said three words and my whole body was covered in goosebumps. Not sure what she even said and i wasnt even looking at the tv yet. I was just looking at my goosebumps in wonder. This was something metaphysical for your mo. You need to see the "live " performance with all the people in the crowd. I mean the Beatles on the David Frost Show in 1968, not the Paul McCartney concerts decades later. And hey, do what the song says, "Take a Sad Song and make it better!" I had to pick one song/one group to represent the 1960's, THIS is the one, iconic.

I've always found this song uplifting. The one that makes me cry is "Yesterday". One way or the other, Beatles tunes can move you.

Hey - what's up guys? I don't know if anybody has told you this already but, the song hey Jude by the Beatles - Jude's real name was/is Julian Lennon. He is John's first born by his 1st wife Cynthia. Paul wrote that song for Julian when his parents were getting divorced. Paul loved Julian from the time he was a baby and Julian looked up to Paul ( and still does ) as a very close uncle.
As far as the song Let it be - the mother Mary in that song was Paul's dead mother Mary who came to him in a dream one night and inspired him to write that particular line and that particular song.
There are many more stories for most of the Beatles music. It's all out there if you take the time to find it.
