Sargent Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was the first "concept" album, in that one song would flow into the next, similar to what you discovered with Pink Floyd. I remember watching their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show. I knew there was an excitement in the country building over them, but at seven years old, and only being able to listen to one AM radio station, I certainly hadn't heard any of their songs yet. What I remember thinking during the show, was wishing the girls in the audience would stop screaming, so that I could hear the music.
Was it? I thought that honor goes to “pet sounds” by The Beach Boys...either way, two landmark album that changed the way albums were not only enjoyed but recorded, using the studio as an instrument...

@@triadmad neither were really concept albums. I think the Beatles admitted it wasn’t. It started with the concept of an alter ego band but they abandoned that after the first two songs. The songs don’t really connect that well. Pet sounds wasn’t really a true concept album either. It kinda explored a concept but the tracks didn’t flow or tell a story or explore one singular thing. Things that I would consider the first rock concept albums are sf sorrow by the pretty things or The Who sell out by The Who. And The Who’s tommy was among the first concept albums and definitely the first rock opera.

Paul wrote this song for John Lennon's first son, Julian Lennon, when John and Julian's mother divorced. Julian was brokenhearted and Paul (who was like an Uncle to Julian) just wanted to comfort Julian (whom he called "Jude"), and encourage him. Sweet, eh?
This song was a monster hit when it first came out! And it's still going strong today.
I was a "Beatlemaniac" back in the day. I saw the Beatles twice in concert. And I saw Paul McCartney in concert after the Beatles broke up and Paul formed the band, "Wings" which included his (now deceased) wife Linda.

@@merricat3025 Yes, they called him "Jules" and originally Paul was going to call it "HEY JULES" but he felt that was too personal and with Julian only being 5 years old at the time, it didn't feel right for Paul, so he changed it to "Jude" instead

It's now July 2022 and Paul McCartney turned 80 on June 18th and just finished a US tour and a concert at the Glastonbury, England festival on June 25, 2022. The crowd sang "Happy Birthday" to him. Also Bruce Springsteen and Dave Grohl (of the FOO FIGHTERS) joined Paul on stage, each one doing 2 songs with Paul and then came back during the finale to join in with the guitar "battle" just before "The END" (after the drum solo)

So many people in this generation appreciate the Beatles, trust me, they do. So much so that they try and act superior to people that dare listen to other bands because they put this band so high. Paul is the one signing and playing piano and bass on this. Julian Lennon is the oldest son of John, the co-founder of the band and the rhythm guitars if the band. Ringo Starr is the drummer, George Harrison the lead guitar.

The Beatles seldom "suck." The reason they're so popular all these decades later is because they were the best rock band in history. With two of the greatest songwriters over the past century.
Some of their stuff that might "suck" is just kind of weird. Revolution #9 is an example. It's... difficult to listen to, a weird collage of repetitive noises. But John was experimenting with some new things.
And given how awesome the rest of the album was, and how diverse and amazing their output was, in just one decade, John gets to do whatever he wants.

The Beatles saved rock n' roll from being a boring succession of Beach-Boys-Wannabes and Leslie Gores as far as you could imagine, and led the British Invasion which brought us far more inventiveness, expression and experimentation with music than had existed previously.

The Beatles took the 1950's genre called "Rock and Roll", added in musical elements from other genres and Created what we now know as "Rock". Without their total influence, none of those later bands would have existed. Music in general would not be what we know today. The world itself would be very different.

Paul is the singer. John is also one of the beatles. John was getting a divorse from his 1st wife. Paul wrote this song for Julian whom is John's son. They are incredible musicians just listen to the Abbey Road album. It was a simpler time back then. Yhe long guitar leads were just beginning when the Beatles were ending. The Beatles changed music and the music world.

John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) also considered Paul McCartney an excellent base player and John Bonham (Led Zeppelin) said Ringo Starr was the perfect drummer for what the Beatles did.

Buddy, It blows my mind you wouldn't know who the Beatles were. Glad you discovered them. Its like saying you like art but don't know who Picasso i;). Also,consider that what makes a good musician isn't just technique or going crazy but playing tastefully and intelligently for the song. Although, technique is fun sometimes too!! If you look at old footage of the Beatles in concert you will see Paul’s pick board is at the top of the guitar that’s because he is left handed and back then they didn’t have guitars made for left handed people so he flipped the guitar and restringed it accordingly

They changed the world, they changed music, they are the best band ever. 25 number one hits in 7 years.
I was living in the era when this long song was new, just when the critics were saying the Beatles were washed up, they came out with this song and kicked their butt. Hey Jude was number one on US billboard for 9 weeks. no matter what the critics say, the Beatles still sell their music because people of all backgrounds, many of whom weren't even born for decades after they split up, still discover and listen to it over fifty years later. Hey Jude appealed to all kids and young adults of that generation no matter their background, along with he Motown music and some other groups etc. You reacted to a first hearing exactly how the original generation did. That means the Beatles are timeless. I'd like to hear the original music written by those Beatles critics and see the music sales for those Beatles critics....if they have any... it will make for a very short read and listen I am sure....by the way, there was NO AUTOTUNE or computer enhanced music like today. This is pure talent, the songwriting and delivery, and timeless music. That is the Beatles legacy.

I think the period when critics thought the Beatles were washed up was when they stopped touring and were spending a long time putting together Sgt. Peppers. But once Pepper was released it was a massive hit. Hey Jude came out the following year so I don't think at this point critics were questioning whether they still had it.
@@jamessmithe5490 Their output was slow at this time and Magical Mystery Tour hadn't been what the critics expected. I think this was a bit of a 'down' period for The Beatles and they produced a number of slow plodding songs like this one but luckily didn't release them. In fact, they were already drifting towards the final split but managed to rally magnificently for the final Abbey Road. I lived through this whole Beatle period and am a massive fan, but the truth is out there. Even they were human.

That just makes me feel old! In the sixties a 1/4 of what was on the radio was Beatles songs.
I don't know what's happened recently, but a majority of the youth of today seem totally oblivious to anything that occurred before they were born.
Thankfully there are some guys like this (and increasingly other RUclipsrs) willing to do a bit of exploration.
@@Jamie_Pritchard I can tell lyou what happened. I'm 40. Growing up, I was forced to listen to what my parents listened to whether that was in the car or at home. Millennial and other youngsters moved on to personal listening devices, etc and parents allowed it because no one wanted to be the heavy anymore. So kids nowadays don't have that "base" you get just from immersion

When it comes to the Beatles think albums not a handful of hits. The most revolutionary and successful band ever. They basically had an 8 year run and look what they did. They often released 2 albums per year. Unheard of!
"Hey, Jude" was written as a message of hope for John Lennon's son Julian, who was experiencing a lot of turmoil from his parents' divorce at the time. Paul originally was going to call it "Hey, Jules", but thought Jude sounded better. I don't know if Julian really got the message or not as a result. He certainly knows now.

best ever or not, i dont know, but by far the most influential band in history. many bands from Pink Floyd ,Zeppelin, black Sabbath, Rush, are heavily influenced by them. they were the 1st. from little pop songs, to rock songs, did it all really. i prefer many other bands, but cant deny they were the greatest.

@Frenchy I personally wouldn't go so far as to say that all the best bands are British. The Doors, The Beach Boys? Also, let's not forget that Brian Wilson was a huge influence on Paul McCartney. Plus, The Beach Boys "Pet Sounds" album inspired The Beatles to record "Sgt Pepper"!

They played it live once... albeit videotaped for the Smothers Brothers Show... still, there was a pretty nice audience as part of the performance.
This song was written by Paul McCartney of the Beatles. After his band mate and best friend, John Lennon married his second wife Yoko Ono, his son from his first marriage, Julian, was feeling kind of forgotten and depressed. Paul took note of this and since he considered Julian like a nephew and wanted to cheer him up and inspire him a bit. So he wrote "Hey Jude." He used "Jude" instead of "Jules" basically because it sounds better. Keep listening to the Beatles, dude. Good job on this one!
I’ve read about fifteen books on the Beatles. They are the greatest band of all time for so many reasons. Rock music is what it is because of the Beatles and Elvis. Their song writing, musical innovation, ability to redefine themselves, use media, creating new sounds - all in ten years... they stand alone. Period.
I am so glad you've been introduced to the Beatles now. Everyone needs to hear them. I'm in the middle generation. I was born the year they broke up for good. But even still, their music is a part of my life, and it's like a textbook for music.

I love everything about this reaction. Not knowing Lennon and McCartney is almost unimaginable to me, but I appreciate that you looked up the song info. John Lennon was murdered on 12/8/1980 outside his home in NYC. Paul McCartney, bass player, who sang this one, is still alive, and he’s a huge icon. Yes, this was a song for Julian Lennon.

Hope you loved "Hey Jude" as much as I did the first time I heard it - I bought the single (on vinyl) back in 1968, and has been my favorite song - of anyone, ever - since then. Paul McCartney is the bassist and one of the lead vocalists. He's singing on this song.
John Lennon is the rhythm guitarist and a lead vocalist. Paul and John do most of the singing.
George Harrison is the lead guitarist and another lead vocalist. Does occasional lead vocals.
Ringo Starr is the drummer and another occasional vocalist.
Jude is the pseudonymous name for Julian Lennon, son of John Lennon. As you read, John and his wife Cynthia were going through a divorce. John notoriously had an affair with artist Yoko Ono and he left Cynthia for her. Yoko is often considered one of the biggest reasons The Beatles broke up as she essentially changed John's way of thinking, was often present in the studio despite a rule restricting wives and girlfriends from being in the studio, and essentially pulled John away from the band. The other members really weren't happy with Yoko always being around. Paul wrote this for Julian to comfort him in this troubling time because his parents were separating.
The Beatles broke up in 1970, two years after this song and only 9 years into their career since their first release. The changed music forever in those 9 years. They innovated so much and everyone looked up to them. No band has achieved the level of innovative progress and fame that they have.
Also, careful with them. Their copyright is intense and many of their songs will get blocked. I'd recommend making a Bitchute account and redirecting their videos to that site. It's Copyright safe and you can use it for other blocked videos.
I must tell all of you its confusing because we don't for sure know who split them out of the Beatles! I just read that Paul was the reason and that George said he would play with the any other Beatle except Paul! Last week I heard it was John! And Ringo quit the band for 3 weeks during the making of the White Album! They finally talked him into coming back and Ringo had tons of fresh flowers!
@@kathrynschimpf8957 No doubt there were many reasons, but Yoko is often blamed as the biggest nail in the coffin and honestly, I can't argue against it. It wasn't just her being in the studio that bothered them. It was her trying to contribute as an artist to The Beatles music that crossed the line (and if you know anything about Yoko Ono, it's that she is by far the worst artist in music history). Screaming John's name at the top of her lungs is not art, but she convinced John it was and then it appeared on their Wedding Album. She is the reason he made Revolution 9. She was placed in the control room of Beatles sessions to comment on the record as if she was a member. She was annoying the hell out of everyone.
Paul definitely had his ego, though so did John but it was of a different sort that expressed opinions as opposed to general control. At the same time, Paul was the only one that wanted the band to keep going but everyone else was starting to lose energy. George felt unheard, John had completely different ideas of art than the rest, and Ringo was just being Ringo. That's why when Paul lost hope, that's what officially ended The Beatles, despite every other member leaving the band at some point, temporarily or not.
Yoko Ono was the reason why the Beatles broke up. Period.

I truly love the Beatles and really enjoy seeing people hear them for the first time. It's been something that's been on the radio or on records family listened to my whole life so I didn't have that "moment" of discovery. Seeing people actually hear it all for the first time satisfies me in a strange way.
I’m glad you’re exposing yourself to all kinds of music. So much out there to listen to and enjoy. Some with such creative and meaningful lyrics.
In one of his last interviews before his murder, John Lennon told a story about Paul McCartney writing this song. Paul asked him what he thought about the line “The movement you need is on your shoulder” - John said it was brilliant.
When I was 18 or so, I didn’t understand what that line meant. Then I remembered another connotation for “movement”. During the sixties there were lots of movements, like the hippie movement, the civil rights movement etc. “The movement you need is on your shoulder” means to trust your own brain and not to follow others.
The Beatles kept re inventing themselves with their music getting deeper as they grew! They broke up while on top too! Which keeps them fresh with their various styles...still influencing musicians!

Brilliant.The band was wonderful in that their music (and style) kept evolving during the 8 years they were recording.Listen to one of their first songs,then one of their last,and you'd almost never know they were the same band.

When you get a chance, see if you can find the movie, Crossroads, with Ralph Macchio. It explores "juke joint" blues. This type of music is what gave birth to early rock n roll.
High school 1968 and I end up on the band bus heading back to Bakersfield after a football game in Shafter. Someone started playing Hey Jude and pretty soon they all are and everyone is singing too. It was pretty amazing.

No matter who was singing the the lead, they had the 2 best harmonies backing them up.
Willie Dixon, Memphis Slim, Guitar Shorty, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson... these guys and many more are directly responsible for rock n roll as we know it.
Without them, there'd be no Beatles, Rolling Stones, or Led Zeppelin.

1968 was easily the most momentous year of the second half of the 20th Century. What's great about the Beatles is that they were never stagnant. They continuously progressed. Their early stuff had no impact on black music, but the late stuff was very influential, and is always mentioned by folks like George Clinton and Maurice White.

The Beatles are considered one of the greatest and my favorite band is because they are not just a Band, they were one of the first to evolve their music. their lyrics and arrangements were ahead of their time, one of the first rock bands to incorporate an actual orchestral into their songs. For your first exposure to them..You picked a great song!
The thing about the Beatles is they are more than just a band. They lead the way for music for decades. They wrote and performed songs that are timeless. I still get chills listening to this song even though I've heard it countless times. You're in for an adventure with this band. They really don't have any peers.
You’re one song in to the Beatles and you hear something. Keep going. Bands like this, ya can’t come close to figuring what they are about because they covered SO much ground. I’m also not one who recommends the singles for most bands (more like whole albums or deeper cuts, but this collection here (‘1’ which is all of their number 1 singles) if listened to start to finish you get a glimpse of how they morph from a very good pop band into something WAY more...way deeper and diverse. Hope you will stick with them for a bit (and THEN do the same with The Rolling Stones). Peace

I think there was a bit more to them than playing instruments. They were the full package. They had everything and more
They weren’t just musicians. They were studio composers, the first band to use the studio itself as an instrument. With the incalculable assistance of George Martin they completely revolutionized modern music. Listen to “Tomorrow Never Knows”. That was 1966 and it still feels cutting edge today.

At least he's discovered Rush. That's something. But the Beatles are the foundation on which later musicians built their careers. And earlier musicians provided the rhythm and blues bedrock on which the Beatles and other rock and roll bands built their foundations.

I love Rush, but the Beatles are on a different planet than Rush. There are so many reasons why this is true, but it’s not even an argument that needs to be made. The Beatles were innovators in ways that are still impacting music today. In just ten years the Beatles became the greatest band of all time. Read their history and study their innovations, how they changed their sounds, experimented with music... Again, Rush was great (crazy good musicians), but they sounded the same for thirty years.
