I'm just incredibly grateful that Chris Thile still exists in the timeline that I'm currently experiencing.
I still remember hearing this the first time- stopping everything I was doing just to listen to it. I still come back to it when I'm frustrated by trying to distract myself and also yet make art that reflects how I feel about the world around me.
just now hearing it for the first time putting off the exact same process. hope you're working hard too!
This is amazing. Every single week they step it up a notch. The new originals are easily the best part of the show each week.
I turned on the radio halfway through this song and sat entranced. Such an amazing song.
Wow, that's amazing. Also, Aoife is a serious talent too!
Chris is firing on all cylanders here. he is truely phenomenol.
FlyingPantherMedia

As soon as I heard this Saturday night I was counting the minutes until it was added. Phenomenal song.

one of the greatest of our generation
THANK you for posting the lyrics on the APHC site - many nuances revealed.
Heard the replay on NPR on Saturday. It is amazing that they could write something so well in a week.
wow....this is a GREAT piece!
This is a great song!
Wonderful as always. And 5,000 points to anyone who can find another song anywhere that mentions ribbon microphones... [EDIT: 'Harlem Roulette' by The Mountain Goats! Any others?]
One of the best yet.
Wait. They write a new original song each week?!?
Can't believe I haven't heard it until now... superb!!!
Love this freaking song! I'm making it me ringtone.

This version is my favorite. 4:25 is pure bliss
Even managed to get a Fed shoutout in there!
All of the literary and political allusions! Where do I get a copy of the lyrics so I can start to unpack some of the things I'm thinking and feeling right now?

hi, non-native speaker here, id love some insight!
I'm a bit late in replying, but there is a great page on Genius with some annotations that might help:

Here's the updated link (after renaming the show)

still better than the studio version
Amazing! And I can't help but wonder if Chris wasn't influenced by James Mercer's habit of pushing his voice after having The Shins on the show in January.
He sings in falsetto a lot already. Movement and Location and Little Lights would be a couple examples.
Sean Havs Thile's been a Radiohead fan for a long time. He recently said he sings in falsetto so often because there's no women in punch brothers lol
I was really hoping for a killer banjo break. This tune screems banjo break-down
There was. Noam is just not turned up high enough
ive listened to this at least a hundred times. as a non english speaker im not sure i really understand what its about im not sure... anyone care to ellaborate?
I'm a bit late in replying, but here goes: The main sentiment in this song is frustration about U.S. president Trump (as Thile doesn't support him). Social media timelines are full with debates and reactions about Trump's actions, and of course Trump is often posting inflammatory things on Twitter (the "140 characters" line).
The "Froggy Went a Courtin'" part is a reference to an old American folk song, and it means that 1. Trump was and is "courting" favor with leaders of other countries, and he thinks his efforts are splendid when in reality he's not a model statesman. 2. Trump says that anyone who "tells him any different" than his narrative of success is wrong. I also think the choice of "Froggy" might refer to the "Pepe the Frog" meme, which has been appropriated by anti-Semites in some contexts, and which has been depicted by some "alt-right" supporters as having a Trump-style haircut and suit. If so, that's a lot of meaning to pack into just a few lines!
The line "tell it like I want it to be" has to do with Trump supporters believing what are being called "alternative facts," such as the false belief that Trump's inauguration had unprecedented attendance.
Whether or not you agree with Thile's political sentiments, you have to admire the allusions and meanings packed into these lines!
Anybody knows the chords of this song?
Album. Take my money
Escapist of the First Order? I didn’t know Finn had been recast for the upcoming film. How can Chris Thile front the world’s best band, host A Prairie Home Companion, AND star in the upcoming Star Wars film??!!! Ridiculous.
Clever song. Brilliant musician. But thank God we were spared the President he would obviously prefer.
At this point I'm thanking God that Trump hasn't drawn us into a full-scale nuclear conflict. He has the political poise and manner of a petulant child.
What I object to is Thile saying "these are hard times." What makes the times so hard? Hurt feelings over who won the election? He travels the world, can do and say what he pleases, and has more money than 99% of the world's population, including his $500,000 genius grant from the MacArthur Foundation.
And if Trump succeeds in de-nuclearization of the Korean peninsula, will the times still be "hard"? It seems to me Democrats and Republicans alike are war-mongers, whose bipartisan agreement launched the debacle of the Iraq War and the implosion of the Middle East -- long before Trump arrived on the scene.
As a professional musician, I find it sad that people in the performing arts march in lockstep and deplore the outcome of the last election, for vague reasons concerning "hard times," and that any dissenting performer risks ending his or her career for bucking the tyranny of political correctness.
But Thile is indeed a musical genius. Nor does avoiding politics from the stage mean "keep the entertainment light." The music can be heavy without moaning about the political scene. Ironically, it is his political commentary, not his music, that is lightweight.
You must not like any rock music from the 1960s...yeesh.
work on that falsetto..but no screaming please..
So sad. Get over it already!
Would you say that Chris should just shut up and sing in falsetto falling from the highest heights?
Somebody hyper-triggerable?
