      As a Warcraft RTS player who also played some WoW this movie was really fun imo. But I liked the CGI work on it... And Ragnar (Lothar) was fun in this (don't know his real name), even if his acting didn't make sense with his how his character should be feeling he did make the movie better just by being quirky and not acting too seriously. It was surprising to me that this movie didn't do well, but I think maybe it did better in Europe than US. But yeah, there are some big nonsensical moments mainly because they were trying to cram too much into it.

  • @bed-bugg
    @bed-bugg Год назад +16

    "There's too many double crosses!" Yeah, that's kinda the whole point of the game lol. Taking even the slightest peek into Warcraft lore is like opening Pandora's box. There's so much shit and half of it ends up being retconned and then you don't even know what's actually true...it's nuts. This movie was 100% made for WoW fans because if you've played the game, especially Classic, you'd get it.

    • @hobosnake1
      @hobosnake1 Месяц назад

      People overblow the retcon thing hard. Name more than 5 retcons. People get pissy when Blizzard adds context to earlier lore. Not sure why this gets conflated with retcons. Like Illidan being in the Legion expansion. It was all in line with previous lore. It makes sense that things could happen to where Illidan returns. Yet people say it was a "retcon" and that Illidan truly was just an evil guy who doesn't mind if we all died. That was never true. Warcraft fans are just idiots and they forget things because the lore has spanned literally 25 years. Yes they've done retcons, nobody denies it, but acting like it happens all the time is ridiculous. For 25 years of lore, Warcraft is actually more cohesive than people want to admit. Try writing a story for 25 years and NOT retconning anything regardless. All of that aside, I don't stand behind any of the lore in Shadowlands. What a piece of heaping trash that really killed a lot of hope for warcraft fans. I hope they can recover, but it's going to be hard.

    • @bed-bugg
      @bed-bugg Месяц назад

      @@hobosnake1 I think it's funny that you wrote that only to discredit Shadowlands when I was just about to bring it up. You can't not stand behind it, it's a part of the game now...which makes it canon! Hence why I said the things I did about lore/retconning.
      And, as a personal note, for me anything that happened during/after Draenor is just out of pocket and ridiculous imo but I also stopped playing consistently around that time too.

    • @hobosnake1
      @hobosnake1 Месяц назад

      @bed-bugg but shadowlands did not retcon anything. Did it sully the reputation of the game? Did it make things like the lich king less cool? Yeah. But nothing in shadowlands was a retcon. I think we probably agree on most things, but chaulking it up to "retcons" is not valid imo, because there were no retcons. Chaulking it up to poor execution and bad writing is definitely valid imo.
      Obviously shadowlands is canon. I'm just saying, WoW lore is still cohesive enough. That does not mean it's all good.
      Also, you stopped playing at the worst time. Legion was baller. If you didn't like Legion's lore, idk what to say. It was peak warcraft. But after legion is turned for the worst. It was a slow painful worsening until the very worst at shadowlands where it got so bad that I stepped away.

    Regarding the betrayal on the orc side: Part of it had to do with Orgrim's guilt over betraying Durotan (they're friends after all) but the other part was that Gul'dan and Blackhand had reneged on their promise. Only Durotan was supposed to be punished for the transgressions, with the rest of the Frostwolves left alone. But after Orgrim turned down Gul'dan's "gift" of the fel (instead claiming to want to be given it in front of the other Frostwolves), Gul'dan decides to have the entire clan wiped out instead (that's why the orcs started setting those tents on fire).
    Ironically, Orgrim initially betrayed Durotan because he couldn't agree with going against their own kind, but then Gul'dan went ahead and ordered the deaths of their own kind, the very thing Orgrim was trying to prevent. This was when Orgrim realized that Durotan was right about Gul'dan: he was powerful with his magic but also in his ability to hold sway over the orcs to do his bidding (and in the scene where Orgrim frees Durotan, there is an implication that the fel magic itself was clouding his, and the orcs, judgement just by being near it).
    Regarding the plan to bring peace between orcs and humans: I think the King was working under the assumption that no one on the human side would know that Garona killed him. At that point, the humans were pretty much thoroughly wiped out, so the idea was that Garona could use the clout from killing him to set up the peace.
    It still wasn't a great plan though.
    With all that said, thanks for giving this movie a watch and if you're interested in learning more about the orcs, Blizzard released a series of short videos called Lords of War in anticipation of the Warlords of Draenor expansion (that was announced alongside the Warcraft film). The short focuses on a few prominent orcs and helps shape their views and society.
    -side tangent: the lone gryphon could have won the humans the entire end battle.
    p.s. You were correct about stuff being cut from the Warcraft film. Around 40 minutes of it according to Duncan Jones.

  • @Ductos
    @Ductos Год назад +8

    The biggest problem of the movie was to adapt an existing story that fans know in their sleep for an audience who never were introduced to any of it.
    Because it works off many story bits like they happened in the games: Gul'dan and Medivh were in league with each other to bring the Orcs to Azeroth, Garona kills the King, alright, but in the game that happens in secret and because she's revealed to be partially under Gul'dan's mind control. That also marked the end of the First War with the Alliance fleeing Stormwind.
    Durotan and Orgrim Doomhammer were also best friends in the game, but not part of the same clan. Doomhammer was part of Blackhand's clan, the Blackrocks, and in the games he succeeds Blackhand as new Warchief of the Horde and ends up killing Lothar in honorable combat, but ultimately loses the Second War against the Alliance afterwards.
    This movie is a mishmash of both wars and has to work with a general audience and ultimately doesn't. I still like it. The music is excellent, the visual design is spot-on and for fans there's lots to take away from it.
    But I agree they should've gone with a different approach. Like adapting the way more famous story of Arthas and his road to become the Lich King of the Undead Scourge form WarCraft III.

  • @dfcd1432
    @dfcd1432 Год назад +5

    So the events of the movie mostly (with some discrepancies) depicts the events of the First War. At the end of the war (and in the movie), King Llane Wrynn is killed by Garona, Llane's son Varian Wrynn was the child seen when the King was leaving for the final battle. Varian becomes the new king, but due to still being a child requires a Regent-Lord to rule until he comes of age. Anduin Lothar is that Regent-Lord of Stormwind who leads the Kingdom on a counteroffensive to chase down the Orcs in the Second War. Lothar went down in Warcraft's history as one of humanity's greatest warriors and leaders.
    When Varian becomes an adult he goes on to have a son to succeed him. That son's name is Anduin Wrynn, named after Anduin Lothar.
    Anduin Wrynn is the current king in modern WoW's lore.

    One of the problems this movie faced I think was not a fault of its own. That problem being, a lot of people these days kinda need to have everything spelled out for them. What I mean is, a lot of people can't make deductive observational reasoning anymore. Unless it's explicitly shown or said (usually as part of tedious exposition) people think it's "bad writing". Nobody wants to use their brains anymore. An example of something that some people don't seem to get is, the characters speak English (or whatever language this movie is dubbed in) for the sake of the AUDIENCE. When we're hearing dialogue from a particular character's perspective, they speak English, and we hear what language the other race actually speaks, because it's from THEIR perspective. You'll notice that, when Garona was translating for Durotan, the humans don't actually speak English, they speak an entirely different language that we usually hear as English, because it's convenient for the audience.

    40:00 about the Portal suddenly opening to the human Capital.
    It is the type of Magic that requires souls or not.
    Gul'dan, the magic orc with spikes, uses Fel, which Medivh mentions in the beginning eats up Life. Gul'dan sacrifices a Deer to bring the baby back to Life. Fel costs Life and Souls to work. It is very Powerful, but also very costly. Using Arcane spells however, which is what Medivh use at the end , just costs "mana" (which is why Medivh had the big pool at the top of the Tower, after each big spell he is drained of mana and use the pools to restore faster) and a long time of studying, incantations etc.
    Also, he opens a Portal to Stormwind which is reasonably close, while from the Orc homeworld to Azeroth is a completely different planet.

    47:05 "... and he's found by.."
    For the Lore nerds we know exactly who he is found by. It is part of a book about the baby orc and the baby orc grows up to become quite prominent (at a point the fanbase called him Green Jesus as he was literally the savior all the time, so the Moses-analogy is decently fitting). It is also linked to a location and a 5-man Dungeon within the game.

      There are a fair number of books in the Warcraft universe, and the older books do suffer a bit from being ret-conned to fit the later story in their MMORPG World of Warcraft..
      It's been a while since I read the books so I hope I don't get them confused too much!
      If I remember correctly, "Lord of the Clans" by Christie Golden is the story of the little baby Orc and the humans that found him.
      The site Warcraft Tavern has a suggested reading list, they are not necessarily in release-order but rather in an "In Universe" chronological order which tries to take into account when new characters are introduced (some books kinda assumes you already know a few of the characters as they had been introduced in previous books), etc.
      I heard that adding links to Comments sometimes puts comments into "awaiting approval"-section that creators don't always check so I'm adding links in a separate comment!
      "Rise of the Horde" is a story about how the Orcs went from being tribes in various degrees of constant fighting and how they eventually unified.
      "Beyond the Dark Portal" is the story of the second assault by the Orcs on the world of Humans.
      "The Last Guardian" is the story about Medivh, Khadgar and Lothar (the three characters you see in this movie, plus the king IIRC).
      I do however recommend reading "Arthas" by Christie Golden as that is among the most iconic stories of the Warcraft Universe.
      I am a bit of a Lore nerd and fanboy so I should say that there is kinda no good place to start, but rather just pick a book somewhere in the beginning and then just work forwards and backwards from there! There is SO MUCH story in that Universe that fan channels have hundreds of hours of story about events, characters, locations, etc.
      The floating city in the sky? Called Dalaran and home of the mages. The Blackrock Mountain where Orcs and Humans have a meeting in the movie? home of Dark iron dwarfs as well as the Elemental Lord Ragnaros. Again, there is SO MUCH story, and I really need to stop before I start fanboy-splaining too much!

    About moving fast and jumping around.
    All of these locations are well known areas within the game World of Warcraft. Most players would have a vague idea of running on foot in the game from the human capital of Stormwind to the Blackrock Mountains, via the different military outposts. I agree that it should have been shown better in the movie (might as well have just re-used those maps). A WoW player would also know exactly where Karazhan is in relation to Stormwind, where Goldshire is, etc.
    Some characters are also quite recognizable due to the weapons they wear. The orc with the big hammer with square edges, Doomhammer. It is a wellknown item in the world Lore.
    Another example, the humanoids used to fuel the giant portal in the beginning. They are called the RDraenei and they have a MASSIVE backstory to them and they have figured since the second expansion of World of Warcraft.
    I'm not sure if you'd consider doing trailer reactions, but you could have a look at the WoW trailers. The first ones are mostly "look at these cool races and classes", the third (Wrath of the Lich King) features events from the RTS (Real-Time Strategy) game Warcraft 3. With that cinematic the trailers become more and more of a selfcontained story ment to hype up for the new expansion. They have also released animated shorts since the "Mists of Pandaria"-expansion ment to give a bit more Lore and setup of the characters and events in the coming expansion.
    I know you are quite invested in the "Wheel of Time" at the moment (which is how I found your channel, your WoT episode reactions and also your book analyzes) but if you find time, there are a plethora of story within the Warcraft universe. A lot of it pre-dates the first game, some is shown during the first three RTS games and some is shown during regular questing and boss dialogues but the later expansions show a LOT of cinematics that can be viewed fairly standalone.

    From your summary about this being a prequel to a movie that doesn't exist, it actually does - it's just NOT a movie. They are using the decades of lore from the Warcraft and World of Warcraft games as that existing story. If you know all the characters in those games this fits in like a really good prequel.
    As for time and location never meaning anything, remember that in World of Warcraft, you can cross the continent in a few hours on foot, so there's an odd compression in their "world".
    Finally, as for The Guardian being all over the place, remember that he's trying to stay loyal, but is falling under the corruption of the Fel magic. So at different times he is working for different goals.
    Anyway, thanks for giving it a chance!

    For people who knew nothing going into this movie, it needed to be longer, or even broken into 2. The Orcs are fleshed out very well, but the human side lacks something that makes them feel like the comic relief rather than people we care about. If you've been following the games for decades, however, it had everything you wanted to see and more. You could tell who people were by their weapons and outfits, and since it's lore we know, it's a lot easier to follow. If you want an idea how much lore Warcraft actually has, check out the amount of books there are. For better or worse, they crammed a lot into this movie and it's really too bad it didn't do better, considering it's really quite a fun adventure.

    Your right the film is too fast paced and edited crazy; that’s because Duncan Jones original cut was chopped down from 3 1/2 hrs by Producers forcing the editors to trim it under 2 hrs.
    The same happened with John Carter; that film had a 3 hr 15 min cut the Disney Producer forced it cut down.
    The main reason is $$$; these Producers want more showings per day as Studios get 75% of their profits from the first two weeks.
    Scott’s Kingdom of Heaven had the same Studio interference, but he threatened lawsuit if they didn’t allow him to create a 3 hr 30 min finished Director’s Cut. The difference is amazing; the Studio theatrical cut is like 2.5 stars and is hated but the Director’s Cut is a 4.5 star critically lauded classic.
    This is a prime example of why Studio Producers should never be involved in the finished product; they are not artisans but money managers

    In my opinion there were 2 problems that resulted in this movie flop despite being solid and true to the original story:
    1. It was released in 2016 when no one kinda cared about WoW and Warcraft anymore even among fans who played it, not even mention those who heard about it once or twice in their lives. If it was released during say WotLK era when it was on peak of its popularity - maybe it would be a different story.
    2. They chose a storyline from the lore which was reasonable in matter of narration in chronologic order but not that interesting or impressive in comparison to the story everyone loved Warcraft for - Fall of Arthas and battle with Archimond. Should they choose to tell this story first and then maybe retrospect back to the 1st war later - most likely they would've captivated audience with the epic story and even safeguard sequels. But 1st war story is not that impressive from the narration point of view.
    Shame. This universe is very broad and interesting, full of opportunities. It would make for a great trilogy or even franchise.

  • @stinkygod1

    I think the biggest part that was missed from your watching this is that World of Warcraft IS THE NEXT THING (sorta) so much of what is in the movie is "this happened to set up a story going on in the game" and not something that was really set up as JUST a beginning... Like the kid that floats down the river is Thrall, the main leader of the horde through most of classic wow days. Mediv acts so erratically BECAUSE he was literally going insane. Lothar is represented in a ton of chants and cheers in the game.
    Dutar had his own backstory that played out in the game, so references here helped explain why he was not around later.
    Basically my biggest issue with the movie is that it does a terrible job of standing on its own. Without at least a general understanding of the lore of the fights that led to WoW (many of these battles were direct references to battles in the RTS games) then the movies plot crumbles. It also does not help that much of the movie is set over the course of YEARS in the world, while it hops around so much and not one person gets older, so it just becomes a mess when they time jump and does not even try to clue people in. Like that "five minute switching of sides" was over the course of like (and I may have my timing off a bit) five years not just a few days or hours.
    anyway thats my two cents

    You nailed it, Nerdy. It is a prequel, except it’s for the game World of Warcraft. If you know the lore of the game, the movie makes more sense, but it doesn’t make the movie any better. I worked at Blizzard, and I’ve read all the books and lore, so it was neat to watch, but the story is better because it wasn’t rushed. This should’ve been a series. But there can’t be another movie, because everyone has played the sequel a million times. The Warcraft lore is actually pretty good, there are twenty something books, and a ton of lore on the internet. Big miss on this movie though.

    Warcraft lore spans 4 editions with many expansions and consists of questlines as a history teacher. You think this was fast paced, watch the fan vid The Entire History of Warcraft in 23 minutes. Nerdy is right. It's not made for everyone. WoW players cheer at every setting because they are recognizable if you've played. This movie is basically the first rts. Stormwind is the human capital in WoW, but at this time there were several human kingdoms. Too much map to fit in 90 minutes with any coherence.
    Guldan was a sickly orc who was picked on. He became super evil when he started using the fel. It was the Burning Legion who gave him the fel, and Medivh became one of the legion's dreadlords in the fel pool. His home, Karazhan becomes a raid. Goel, the orc baby is raised as a gladiator slave eventually becomes a shaman leader for the horde. These tidbits barely scratch the mass of lore.
    The animatics are worth watching. There are many, but if you watch only one, I suggest The Battle for Azeroth.

    Many players assumed they would look into doing the Arthas storyline (which is VERY iconic in the lore and among the playerbase, consider reading the book) but Blizzard knew that having a Human-centric story as their first (and possibly only) movie would anger the players who belong to the Horde and focusing only on the events leading up to the Orcs opening the Portal (as in letting the opening be the mid-point or the end of the movie) would mean only Orcs which would annoy the Alliance players (and those of the Horde not playing Orcs). So to try to please both factions they had to try to include them both about equally.
