In 1970 The Moody Blues were at their creative and commercial peak. After reinventing themselves from their R&B roots to a much more sophisticated sound, between 1967 and 1970 they released five albums, four of which hit the Top 5 in the UK with two of them going to No.1. They enjoyed similar success in the USA where four of the albums hit the Top 20 and the other was just outside. At the end of August 1970, shortly after the release of their album A Question Of Balance, The Moody Blues took to the stage of the Isle Of Wight Festival in front of an audience estimated at over half a million.
This DVD makes that performance available to be seen for the first time.
It features tracks from their best selling albums: Days Of Future Passed, In Search Of The Lost Chord, On The Threshold Of A Dream, To Our Childrens Childrens Children and A Question Of Balance.
Includes the classic hit singles Nights In White Satin and Questions.

I'm a melancholy man, that's what I am,
All the world surrounds me, and my feet are on the ground.
I'm a very lonely man, doing what I can,
All the world astounds me and I think I understand
That we're going to keep growing, wait and see.
When all the stars are falling down
Into the sea and on the ground,
And angry voices carry on the wind,
A beam of light will fill your head
And you'll remember what's been said
By all the good men this world's ever known.
Another man is what you'll see,
Who looks like you and looks like me,
And yet somehow he will not feel the same,
His life caught up in misery, he doesn't think like you and me,
'Cause he can't see what you and I can see.

The Mellotron maestro, the Melancholy Man, the last of the original Moodies, a true Veteran Cosmic Rocker. RIP, Mike Pinder. Thanks for all the music.
😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 I always find out how great people are once they die it happened with Randy Meisner and now Mike Pinder. I listened to a bit of his solo stuff when he was alive but that was it really.
Sad to hear about the passing of this brilliant musician. RIP Mike Pinder
My father listened to this music and I inherited his musical taste. great to find these videos.
One of my favorite songs. RIP Mike Pender. Thank you for all the great music.
rest in peace bro !
now the original moody blues are done. thnx for this good times of the inventors of prog-rock !
Thanks for the music - RIP Mike
Very sad news today about the brilliant Mike Pinder passing. We love you Mike, may your music influence generations to come as it did ours. Bless you, fly high. RIP xxx
When all the stars are falling down into the sea and on the ground, and angry voices carry on the wind, a beam of light will fill your head...... fantastic lyrics.
Agree timeless and sublime.
Dear Friend; for what no write all the song since so far the time..? Please, write to me.. and thnk U previously..! --DD, from S.A..
It also describes what might be coming in the near future if a certain someone makes his words of warning come true regarding the things happening in a certain eastern European country and the stance taken by many western powers
He created his music and shared his message with the world from a place of spiritual grounding. As he always said, 'Keep your head above the clouds but keep your feet on the ground.' His authentic essence uplifted everyone who came into contact with him. His lyrics, philosophy, and vision of humanity and our place in the cosmos will resonate with generations to come.
RIP Melancholy Man!💔🙏
Unique song by itself and pulling off this performance live in front of a such a crowd is beyond words.
Yes pamietam
Thought the same thing - the studio version is not produced for a live performance. But credit where it's due - they do so wonderfully here
Brilliant! Just Brilliant!! At age 65, i can remember listening to this over and over while my then Girlfriend, (Elaine) was in the bath. 1974-1975. What happened to my life? I became a melancholy man?
Maybe you should have jumped in the bath instead of listening
Damn. That was quite a long bath.
Me too, because ---- yeah, that's what I am...
But what a truly wonderful song!
John Cullinane same age & same feeling
Where's Elaine now?
I still cannot understand how Mike Pinder could sing this song without crying
Who cries on stage when performing every night?
This music of the Moody Blues is a very spiritual experience and will live on in the hearts of all good people everywhere.
Awesome !! MB fan from the very beginning !! I'm 75 years young. I always looked forward to Mike's contributions on every album.
R.I.P. Mike Pinder - The Mellotron Man
Pinder shouting out his lyrics at the end with all that emotion. These guys were at the top of their game. Cosmic rockers for the Ages.
I hear you man... Pinder was normally a very composed and phlegmatic type of guy., was kind of surprised to see him this riled up there at the end. Quite impressive and I've got more respect for him for the great artist he is.
the last man standing of the original moody blues
RIP mike ! :(
it was a verry good time with you .
My Brother got me into the Moody's and every time I hear this I think of him. He's been gone twenty years, but not in my heart.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
who
I see you both as kids..running over some meadows
Шедевр!!!
This is such an excellent sound quality recording.
The image of Ray and Mike playing from behind them and the the endless sea of people in front of them is stunning.
The Moodies, just are not the Moodies without Mike. I love them, but they were never the same after he left.
One of those artists that will go to his grave without receiving all the credit he deserves.
Mike, you're a musical treasure.
Sad, but so, so true...same with Woolly Wolstenholme of Barclay James Harvest. They were never the same once he left...and about the same time Mike left the Moodies!
Mike brought them their spiritual edge. He made a rock band an orchestra. My son named after Justin but Mike truly led this band and never did it for fame. Met Pinder in L.A. years ago. I'm 69 and listening to them now at 3 a.m.
Question of Balance is truly one of their finest and what a way to start 1970 after the phenomenal 60s music scene. Leave it to The Moody Blues
A Beam of Light will fell your head and you'll remember what's been said by all the good men this world's ever known... truly enlightened lyrics
Oh man, I love the sound of the MKII mellotron . . . . Mike Pinder was the absolute master of that machine. It's the sound of a gateway to another world.
I heard this song on the Question album back in 1972 at when I was 15 and it is one of my favorite Moody Blues songs. The Moody Blues was one of my favorite bands in college in the 1980's and today when I'm 65 the Moody Blues is still my favorite band. Anyone that values knowledge over the mundane are Melancholy men.
Nobody cares how old you are…just say you like this masterpiece and move on
@@Oh_I_Will Nobody cares about your lame and pathetic snide comments either! Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Respighi, and Stravinsky are masterpieces!

Pushing 70 and still love the Moodies... One of my all time favorites. Their music is timeless. All of my children have been raised on this and also share my passion.

normally rock audience demands energy and jumping and blah blah. there`s thousands of audience over there silently listens and adores this dolorous song. that`s a success in itself...
Thinking of Pinder. This album and this song, and a incredible performance. Helps me understand the world a bit better. Myself included.
I love the 80s era Moodies, but this is proof that something priceless and irreplaceable was lost with Mike's departure.
The beginning with the flute and guitar is beautiful... and Ray Thomas is rocking that double corduroy look in 1970s earthy tones to perfection. I was a 9-month old baby when my parents took me to the IoW festival on the same day the Moody Blues performed. Whether I was there at that moment - who knows. I would have loved to have been.
Ah, "A Question of Balance"!!! One of the best of the best albumns - and still fitting for the world we live in now.
I discoverd this song thanks to Spotify and loved it ever since, I was talking to my uncle who loved this song since the 70's and it was a awesome moment to see him light up from excitement when I started to sing along the lyrics, he never expected it
How did Spotify enlighten your limited tastes…?
I was a lonely girl who bought this record in 1970 ( 45 t with Candle of Life on side B ) and I still cherish this song .The Moody Blues created so many Chefs d' Oeuvre. Love from France !
One of the most incredible live music clips I have ever seen.
They are absolutely brilliant. To put the feeling of a shattered soul into music form never ceases to amaze me.
Mike sang his Soul out in this, and his Mellotron playing is what you get "Lost in " First Class and this was 1970 Isle of Wight Festival.
How it took so long for these guys to be in the R&R HOF is criminal. Hands down one of the best 10 rock groups of all time.
The same Hall that has Mad Donna Summer in it….I’d be ashamed to be included with those two jokes
Look in the grand scheme of things it is irrelevant, they turned their HOF into a Hall of Shame a long long time ago.
It was sort of a forgotten and hard-to-find song 12 years ago when I first found it, so I thought it would get even more forgotten and hard-to-find, but I see it's been getting some attention since then... I'm glad to be able to hear different versions of it now, thanks for the upload.
One of my favorite band since 1965 but mostly after their strep into progressive rock, they are one of the great bands that have an great impact of music.
I love this song of the Moody. So beautiful !
I was at this festival sitting on the hill and it seems a bit unreal to see it again. it really does seem like a few months ago.
What name of this festival?
@@theelderspirit249814 year old comment man 😢
A Very Melancholy but Incredible song, so insightful. Masters of "Orchestral and Harmonic" rock and roll.
I'm so glad this video exists, thinking of Mike and all his great music. RIP Mike.
will there EVER be another 60s and early 70s I fucking miss my youth so much I did not ask to get old, long live moody blues the stones, jethro , wishbone ash chicken shack, hendrix, fleetwood, ten years after, deep purple , Sabbath the magic CREAM and all the rest
That’s just some of the bands too...and the answer to your question is not a chance
Thanks to this song i can make my own 60s now
I have never seen this performed live before. One of my favourite MB songs.
Great performance by Mike on the mellotron.
I've seen them maybe ten times. Please see them while they're mostly still with us. It is worth it.
Mike Pinder was the only one to play mellotron that way and outside.à unique musician
RIP Mike Pinder. I was fortunate to see Mike and the rest of the Moodies perform live in St. Louis in 1973.
What an AMAZING live version!!! The passion! The strength! Thank you so much for uploading it. The video quality is perfect, too!
Das waren Zeiten... Partys im Keller... Zum ersten Mal geschmust... Der erste Kuss... Und die Musik der 70er...unvergessen
Though I’ve been familiar with all of the Moody’s big hits for many years, I’ve never heard this song until around late April of this year. Interest in the different Isle of Wight sets has led me to this, and I found the performance so haunting with 600,000 in attendance, at sunset and captured on film, and so poignant to the place that I’m in, in my life right now.
I’ve been listening to it over and over.
Then I heard that Mike Pinder of the Moody Blues who wrote and sang Melancholy Man died on April 24, right at the moment that this song came into my life.
I believe that music is like love, and memory, and long forgotten smells, and old paintings that suddenly look new.
I shouldn’t say too much because a 54 year-old song just tapped me on the shoulder at the moment that it’s composer left this world. It’s all mysterious yet familiar and something like a dream becoming reality. And, I really shouldn’t say much more about it.
The studio song is sublime, great vocal counterpoint! This concert footage is second class
Ne varsa eskilerde var.Neden artik bu kadar guzel sarkilar yspilamiyor ?
Hmm- Mike is likely the most underrated soul in the Moodies and this song (and Tuesday Afternoon) is what turned me on to them in mid 60's. First taste of cosmic rock and have been there ever since. The Classic 7 albums are listened to daily by me...and my kids and perhaps their kids some day. Expands your mind?? unheard of--but true
This two songs you talk about are my favourites from Moody Blues. I just learned now they're made by the same guy
He made the serious moody's Songs, Dawn is a feeling, when You are a freeman, lost in a lost world
Тысячу раз прослушал и каждый раз как впервые. Это шедвр.
These guys nursed me thru more acid experiences than I can remember... heavenly...
I had to go to this song after hearing o Mike's passing. So true. So bold. Such balls to play this at a mega huge festival such as Isle of Wight. he colored their music and made people think as well as feel. My Song off of EGBDFavor is one of my favorite songs of all time.
Did somebody say they lacked "chops" ???!!! Well, they're not showboaters but I've always been able to hear and feel the beauty of their music. I'm getting up there age-wise and I've seen almost everyone in concert; punks, folkies, shoe-gazers, head-bangers and I will say that the Moodies got it ALL! (Alas, I've only gotten to see them twice). Their bonus chops would include their passion, expression, spirituality, love for music and humanity. Since the advent of wonderful RUclips, I have been able to delve into them and other bands to my heart's content. I was very ill last summer, and I could only listen to the Moodies, their uplifting and healing music was the only thing I wanted to hear. Hayward's voice and lyrics especially. I really love Mike on this one. What an awesome song ! I can't find the Isle of Wight performances by the Moody Blues on RUclips (just this one) but when I type it in on the browser, they are there and seem to be on some Russian RUclips. But you ought to check them out...just wonderful!
For me it's the best song I've ever heard
Я люблю этих ребят за искренность и слушаю их с 1973 года по-сю пору
in my opinion the best song ever written :)
+Dimitri Ls and the best version is this
Extremely great song. Yes. Agree.

I love seeing this old footage of one of my absolute favourite bands. Each Moody brought something to the table, and Mike Pinder's music just resonates within me.
Rest in peace Ray and Graeme. You are missed!
And now Mike
Это как должен был Благословить Всевишний этих людей, что бы они могли создать такой шедевр?
God it’s so depressing I love it 🥰 I feel the pain, drain and despair in the number
The best group to ever be💙💙💙💙!!!!! They are by far, my most favorite band, EVER!!!!! Justin is so 🔥🔥🔥🔥 hot!!!!! They are so magical and beautiful in their song's 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶...... I have their cd's playing in my car now!!! 💙💙💙💙.. 🥀🥀🥀🥀... 2022....
Probably in my Top 20…for sure
Great to see Mike and the old MKII Tron. The studio version is perhaps the best song ever recorded for listening in the "head phone zone". I always play it when testing speakers.
“ Nothing can be loved or hated unless it is first understood.” - Leonardo da Vinci.
As an older individual, this song hits hard for me. It's a tough time for me, have everything I need but...
This is their best song. Love it!
Тут ни чего не скажешь, очень талантливая выдающаяся песня красиво исполненная и клип нравится мне тоже. Соединение бард с роковым стилем в музыке и исполнении как мне кажется !!! Короче... Круто не по детски!!!!
This band gave me so much.I grew up with the mood blues.I've see then live many times and they always take me away to far and distant lands.I hope they never stop doing what they do so well
I’ve seen them three times the Gorge in George-best show 93’ Fall Santa Ana perfect weather had and deja vu as I was leaving like I had dreamt being there before! So wild with all the stars out too!
A great song from the 70s, the best decade in rock music.
Beautiful live version of this wonderful song. Mike✌!
Thanx 4 this, great to see Mike and Ray to the fore
THESE were the days! Simple..care free...no one was a.stranger..NEVER had a worry in the WORLD...AND THEN CAME THE MOODY BLUES, which started A WHOLE NEW ERA OF MYSTIC ROMANTIC METAPHORES DRIVEN BY SUCH WONDEROUS AND DEEP FELT SOUNDS OF STRINGS AND ORCHESTRATED BEAUTIFUL INSTRUMENTS THAT COMPLETELY TAKES YOU BY THE HAND AND TELLS YOU A STORY THROUGH EACH VERY CAREFULLY AND SKILLFULLY PLACED WORDS THAT GIVE PAUSE TO PONDER EACH AND EVERY ONE AS THEY SPEAK IN DELIBERATE RIDDLES THAT GLIDE..FLY...
When all the stars are falling down...A BEAM OF LIGHT WILL FILL YOUR HEAD
RIP Ray Thomas.
What a beautiful ERA that was!!
So sad yet uplifting at the same time brilliant song
this is just so friggen awesome! it looks like they recorded it yesterday! and the sound ... it's like they were in a studio jamming amongst themselves! just a great friggen post!
I've never seen these videos. I was lucky enough to seen this band live in Arizona a few years ago and have always loved their albums going way way back.
My God, This is priceless! I have to get this!
It's on DVD, the Aisle of Wight concert.
Best Moody Blues song ever.
This is an astounding vid of what music, lyrics and life/ feelings really where before the world of poular music took over. God Bless Original videos such as this...there are more out the, ....Keep Looking!
Yes, this is when real music was played.
..CRY..SCREAM...WANDER...DREAM AND SAIL ON WISHES AND WHISPERS OF A LOVE SO TRUE AND REACHES OUT THROUGH THE VERY DEPTHS WITHIN ONES HEART THAT IS EXPRESSED WITH EACH AND EVERY INSTRUMENT AS THE WORDS SO SKILLFULLY NAVIGATES ITS DESIRE TO BE HEARD, AND UNDERSTOOD, WHICH REVEALS ITS MESSAGE IN SUCH A FULFILLING MUSICAL WAY...THROUGH EVERY CHORD..NOTE..KEY AND WORDS SAID IN SONG...AS EACH BELONG EXACTLY WHERE THE AUTHOR LEFT THEM AND EXPRESSED THEM EXACTLY AS EACH INSTRUMENT PLAYED THEM.
RIP Ray Thomas... The flute player... ;-)
May you rest in peace.❤😢
minha música favorita do Moody Blues! Excelente!
I never saw this before. I have been a fan for decades. Mike Pinder sure did a good job singing this live
Tenia 10 años y hoy tengo 57 años y continuo escuchando esté clásico.
Back here in 2024....Love The Moody Blues!!! ❤❤... 💙💙💙💙💙.....
Sem palavras ❤maravilhoso . Voz do Pinder era divina .
So good one of their best. 👍❤️
Was lucky to see MB five times, each time memorable.
And?
Ya know, when you mature and have maybe caught a brief glimpse of expanded consciousness, largely due to Moodies music, you can't imagine how they could re-create this music live right in front of you. I consider myself fortunate for a couple of things-one is that I have actually been able to see them a few times and also that nice people have been posting obscure stuff like on RUclips.
the older the better... OMG, this is Gold!
I'm still trying to catch up to these guys. STILL enjoying every song...not getting enough of MB. LOVE it!!
OH..one more thing...I sure miss wearing those clothes..the bell bottom pants...hip hugger. Seeing the guys with long hair. OMG we were just so cool then. THE best music ever!!
That rocks! I love this live version.
Me too

once in a generation somebody will write a song like this!!!
Brilliant to see the gig from the bands perspective. You feel like you are up there with them on the stage. Bet they're glad it was filmed.
Amazing music amazing lyrics
"All the world astounds me, and I think"...I'll never understand how 8 people could click on the Moody Blues intentionally, and dislike this! Fabulous!
there are no other groups like the Moodies... singular one of a kind.
This song was on the flip-side of Tuesday Afternoon in the 70's, which caused me to buy the album, then another, etc. Imagine listening to everyday mindless pop songs before this came along. Many thanks for posting!
Great song
There's an interview with Mike Pinder where he states that he told the Beatles they should try the Mellatron and that he wrote down the name of the company that made the instrument and the name of who to contact, etc. They took him up on that and ordered two of their own instruments. Yes, Mike Pinder was THE master wasn't he? I wish he hadn't left the group, but I love the Moodys all the way through their careers.
