  • In this video you will learn everything about how to create a realistic looking grass field in V-Ray using just native tools. For this we will first prepare our grass assets using the popular Quixel Megascans Asset library. We will find some nice looking grass there and convert it to V-Ray, rebuilding the entire shader from scratch.
    We will then use V-Ray's native scatter solution Chaos Scatter to distribute all of our grass assets onto any surface in your scene. We will cover all the necessary basics but also explore some more advanced techniques such as how to maintain a sharp outline using edge trimming, or how to remove parts of our grass using spline excludes or other procedural techniques.
    I am using 3ds Max and V-Ray 6 in this demo but you can use very similar techniques for older versions such as V-Ray 5, V-Ray NEXT and V-Ray 3 when using an external plugin such as Forest Pack. A similar workflow can also be used in other software such as Cinema4d, Maya, Blender and different kind of render engine such as Corona, Octane, Redshift, Arnold, Cycles, CyclesX, Eevee and countless others.

    Is it still necessary to use vray2sided material for this, or is using the materials translucency enough?

    • @Sergij_Vari
      @Sergij_Vari Месяц назад

      @@JonasNoell yes, I mean for example how to make Lawn or wild grass. For example, not from scratch, we could use any assets, or detach some blades of grass and recreate own asset to scatter.

    Do you always neglect the Vray material imported by Quixel Bridge with any 3d object?

    • @JonasNoell
      @JonasNoell  Месяц назад

      Yeah because they are not setup correctly for V-Ray. I have a video about this in my channel.

    If you use the scattered geometry as a VrayProxy (in this case making proxy each of the megascans grass chunks) will the edge trimming works fine or it may get some troubles?

    • @JonasNoell
      @JonasNoell  14 дней назад

      No that shouldn’t matter if you use proxy or real geometry

    Why do you not use the material that comes with the asset? You said it's done a really bad way but why? Does this only apply to models or is it surfaces as well?

    • @JonasNoell
      @JonasNoell  Месяц назад

      Everything that comes from Quixel Bridge is not setup correctly. For example reflection color, bump intensity, normal orientation and so on. I have a tutorial in my channel how to setup Megascans Assets in V-Ray that goes into the details.

    Hi Jones, Could you make an extra to have grass changed colors to yellow at some areas?

    • @JonasNoell
      @JonasNoell  Месяц назад

      You could easily use a DistanceTexture for that

  • @jimmwagner
    @jimmwagner Месяц назад

    How would you go about having wind animation in the grass?

    • @JonasNoell
      @JonasNoell  Месяц назад +2

      I guess you can animate the grass assets with some noise and it should also work for the scattering. But I haven’t tried. For more advanced setups I would switch to Forest Pack as there it is possible with many more options.
