- When jet packs were first revealed in 1961, they quickly captured the public's imagination. Its design hasn't varied much since it debuted, but one man is looking to change that.

These rocket engine packs were demonstrated frequently at county fairs in the mid 60s and I got to see them in action. Quite a sight.
Awesome and I just saw a jet power flyboard by in a recent Bastille day post by Guardian news. It inspired me to look back.
Back in the middle '60s, my brothers and I, saw a demonstration flight by, "Col. Ked," who was tied in with, "Keds Shoes," tennis shoes in this case, at the "Blue Ridge Mall, in Kansas City, Mo. The flight only lasted less than 30 seconds, but, to a young kid like me, it was fantastic to watch.
Awesome, also the one of the recent Bastille day celebrations a French inventor showed off a jet powered Flyboard.
I just saw on it as a short posted by the Gaurdian news yt channel. Man I typed too much sorry.
I remember the Jet Pack from the 1st season of Lost in Space back in 1965 thinking it was a prop, not till years later reading publications about the series, the Jet Pack was a real piece of gear flown by a man from Bell Rocket on 2nd unit footage around Red Rock Canyon. Then a lighter weight model prop for the close up of Guy Williams wearing the Jet Pack.
Thanks for sharing Smithsonian Channel. I keep an eye out for interesting aviation videos to share. Keep them coming.
@Тити Мити words of wisdom
Them recording this guy just launching a longboard out of a bowl 😂
Wow! I had no idea they had jetpack tech back in the 60's; I thought this was a recent development.
Just like the avrocar! They actually had a flying saucer hover car, back in the 60s! What a decade.
I wonder why this technology is old but yet no development was made. But cars have been re defined. We are not evolving but returning to the stone age
@@anthonygarcia5746 one word - regulation
there is no more recent development. research right now is basically diet coke
@@harsh-xv2rf Two more words. Status Quo.
@@anthonygarcia5746 well its not hard logic those are pressurized tanks strapped onto someone back which means potential explosion. we cannot have every day civils walking around with bombs strapped to their backs. Imagine a office building skyrise that had nothing but ppl jet packing to work. That building would have so many chances for something to go wrong.
can you imagine the air traffic control system if everyone had them. and the refill rockets will cost a forturne
Yes, but that's the purpose of technological advances. Cell phones cost $4000 in 1983.
Electric powered jetpacks. Get up to date man this is not 1965. Air traffic lol you are so old
watch jlasers, he made a similar iron man jetpack which is powered by electricity rather than fuel !

Gta san andreas in real life but without cheat codes
To think that this was published in 2015 and that’s how jetpacks used to look like then comparing them to now as of 2019 where Gravity (company) are selling jet suits. Times have changed.
Took them long enough
I want one!
Over 1,000 flights ~ Love to know about the crashes - His old helmet was damaged.
Fascinating ergonomics. I would love to learn more of this from the designers and engineering perspective
Well luckily some guy created a jet version LOL.
saw one at montreal expo 67 in 1970 when I was kid. still waiting for mine ;-)
At 0:53 why is he on a long board????
Yea and sucks😂
I want this, why is it not famous?
I feel bad for the guy the producers made skateboard.
Who doesn’t want to put the neighbor kid in a rocket belt?
The Bell Rocket Belt was on display at the 1964 World's Fair in Queens, New York (Flushing Meadows Park). Sadly our school teachers did not take us see it or the 007 Car. Myself and all the other students in our Fifth Grade class hated that!!!! They took us to see a bunch of other exhibits we were not interested in because the teachers felt they were "educational". My friend lucked out his Dad took him to the World's Fair and his Dad took him to see the Rocket Belt Exhibit and the 007 Aston-Martin exhibit!!!!
YEESS THX YOU SAW IT AS A CHILD.
Did you know that in the film thunderball in the jetpack ( or rocket belt whichever you prefer) scene they had a stuntmen use a real jetpack
Bill Suiter. flew in in the movie as he was one of only 2 people in the world who could!
The title of this video was about where jet packs are headed and really it appears they are not headed anywhere since most of the content is based on a time in American history when we had the drive to better ourselves as a nation. Lets be honest it, like so many other things is headed NO WHERE!!!!
America used to be a land where people would dream and not just dream but dream big. We have turned into a land of zombies where we only care about...? Well I don't know that we care about anything but I do know we have forgotten how to dream.
Agreed
well... you have secret goverment that dreams,so you dont have to... and they give you big pile of money, your new AMERICAN DREAM, and poors that dream for just a bit of money,so you leave them alone..who knows where their dreams are and what they are about..
To this day, you can't get some people to acknowledge progress. The refusal to cease reliance on coal and oil is just another example of people preferring to live in the past.
Now the British are the new ones.
I'm surprised that the pilot is even able to keep level, I thought that there was some type of gyroscopic autopilot to assist in handling.
In only 8 years, this video is now out of date with true jet pack racing (with jet engines on the hands) now a reality.
1:20 Reminds me of the pilotwings rocket belt
0:21 The definition of Disappointment
Jim Kelly mastered it
Closing statement was awkward. Nice video though
The engineer that desing it was Harold Graham
I want one like a mandalorian style
We couldn't even save people hanging out of windows at the World Trade Center. We could have put up helicopters and drop lines to them, but we didn't . What happens if there is a next time? It was what 15 minutes before both building fell. A lot of lives could have been saved. The US Government is responsible for the deaths of the people in the second tower. There was ample time to get planes in the air to shoot down the second plane. We need to focus on practical life saving technology. A jet pack that flies for 30 seconds isn't very useful. I imagine that even a minefield goes on for more than 30 seconds.
Did anyone ever do this kind of flight during the Seattle Worlds Fair in 1962? Or any other year at the Seattle Center?
“But birds are born to fly, people aren’t”
What kind of ending is that bruh
Big flying target.
Anyone know if there's a title for the music playing in the beginning?
I would look in the james bond section somewhere
Crazy these things were made in Niagara Falls ny
I think he flew the one in Lost in Space.
Hey, Smithsonian Channel! Can I use tiny bits of this video for a song teaser trailer? The song is called "Jetpack". Imma leave a link to this video in the description of the official audio when it comes out this august 16th!
Gravity Industries and Zapata flyboard
But born to learn.
Lost in Space. The actual footage. Would that have been Bill?
that's your problem, rocket engines are ok for space but when you have plenty of oxygen, go with jet turbines, there are jetpacks being made, design a pair of small hydrogen powered turbines that have mad efficiency and you will gain a bit more in autonomy.
I get why its not open for used by normal, but why aren't the military/coast guards/firefighters/police aren't using the technology?
*....THE OVERHEAD CAMERA IS BULLSHIT, BUT IT DOES TAKE AWAY FROM PEOPLE NOTICING WHERE THE WIRE IS ATTACHED FOR THE TRAPPEES ACT....*
I first sawbit in the tv series The Million Dollar Man
0:53 Ah, very deep, guy. Go smoke another doobie, man.
Just as a bird does- for 23 seconds...
Well it’s still a jetpack here
Totally impractical for anything other than recon missions. This technology has been around in one form or another for more than 60-years. The functional design prohibits any real military application because flying it requires 100% of both mental and physical faculties. In any combat scenario these are simply fast moving HUMAN SKEET and vulnerable to any number of weapon systems including small arms.
It’s a conspiracy Bill is a robot who was originally named Hymie who later appeared on Get Smart.
get out
GTA SAN ANDREAS
what about a back pac into space like the gold models of the nazca lines by aliens 500 years ago ... bubbygoddess2021
GTA San Andreas
haha and the woke generation thinks they are futuristic
no conclusion no watch his episode... what a waste of time plugging a show that thye dont mention
Lol
Look at that GoPro over his head😁
