  • Repair and restoration of a USN version of an ARC-5 command set receiver. This model covers 1.5-3 Mc, runs off its original dynamotor, with no internal circuit modifications. This radio is original with the exception of a small number of caps that tested bad which were re-stuffed. Build date is Feb. 42, who knows where and what this radio may have been involved in?

I was given one of these when I was kid in the 70s and already fascinated by radio and electronics. Unfortunately I no longer have it but so wish I had held on to it. Mine did not have a dynamotor. The inside of the RF transformer cans was like a work of art.

An unmodified radio is an artifact deserving of our respect :^) +1 on the outboard control panel - a fine solution to keep the radio as original as possible. It's funny we're now reversing the mods from the 60s. Command sets are an addictive hobby.

Seen so many of those in junk condition at hamfests all my life. Nice to finally see what it's supposed to be!

6:25 That's the US station WWV broadcasting on 2.5 exactly. Good signal to calibrate to.

Nice Job. Glad to see that you didn't hack it to pieces. The AM sounds really clean.
I've got a new, in the box, Navy T-20 (4-5.3MHz) transmitter that I haven't quite figured out what to do with yet. Love that radio, it is so simple and well built.

Might be missing something but you need to grease the bearing's, the original grease has always vanished or is rock solid. We use silicon grease. This will then minimise wear over time and maximise performance.

I hope that the bearings were greased! Lubriplate Poly HP-2, Chevron SRI 2 and Mobil Polyrex EM are the most suitable greases for the ball bearings used in dynamotors, at 0 to 50 Celsius ambient temperatures. 100% of the free space in the bearing can be filled with grease at the speed factor these bearings are operated at, but filling only 75% to 95% reduces the possibility of excess grease going where it is not wanted.
