The advantage the WC has is the fact it only comes around once every 4 years so it has that extra spice if it was a yearly tournament it may well lose its novelty factor even though the Champions league final has huge audiences it's not talked about in the same way as the World Cup final is in terms of hype and build up and the WC is more likely to have those who don't follow the game on any other occasion watching than the CL does
of course champions league is amazing , but what makes wc the best is that it is played every 4 years , all countries take part on it , if fifa consider it to be played every 2 years , it would be the biggest mistake ever made
You are delusional. Football is not seasonal. It's the beautiful game. The beautiful game which has universal following not like cricket or basketball. Make those other sports 4 years rotation, they will soon be extinct.
As much as I wanted Morocco in the final. France vs Argentina is a great final, especially what both teams playing for, this ain't your usual WC win, this win will be historically important in the grand scheme of football history.
Wdym ''usual WC win''? Every final is important in the grand scheme of football history. I'd argue the Finals of 1954, 1970, 1974, 1986, 1990, 1998, 2010 and 2014 had equally as much, if not more on the line than this upcoming final.
Unless your country doesn't have a team or your team was banned for starting a war, the World Cup is the only title that can be truly referred to as a World Title as it includes the whole world from the start of qualifying to the end with the Final.
Wonder why the US was never banned they started so mant ways over the 20 years lol speaking as an american we start wars like crazy but then again we eun the world and make the rules. No one can ban us we're gods!!!!
Just about all the competitions listed here (except for the Super Bowl) include the whole world from qualifying to the end with a final. However, much like other sports like cricket, there is really only a small handful of teams that have any mathematical chance of ever winning the final, so to that extent neither sport can truly be considered a world title on this particular metric.
football will remain the biggest sports because it is easily accessible to everyone, it is fairly easy to understand than any other sports. this what distinguishes it from other sports which made this sports loved by everyone.
Cuz you need to wear military grade armor to play American Football. You need overpriced iron sticks to play golf. You need to have PhD from Harvard to understand Basketball and you only a ball and somewhat decent field to play football.
@@mfatihbilhaq4977 You need to have PhD from Harvard to understand Basketball This is incredibly wrong. The strategy in basketball is very similar to soccer. You only need a ball and a hoop to play basketball
That's not it. As you stated, it is the only tournament that reunites the best soccer ahtletes from their respective countries from all around the World every four years. The cultural significance can only be comparable to the Olympics. In this last tournament alone, you got Arab People and qatari peopple rooting for Argentina, you got japanese people rooting for Brazil, you also got mexicans rooting for France and so on. Such odd fanatic behavior can only be seen in a tournament of such popularity and cultural influence, which has tons of lore and history, global history, and that's just one of many stories you will definitely encounter. Also just to note, Qatar has little history with soccer, even so they worked hard to get to host this event cause they tough that was the best way to introduce Qatar to the world.
Thanks for another encyclopaedic take on football, as always. Being born and raised in Bangladesh, and a hardcore Argentina fan, it was wonderful to see Argentinians acknowledge its fandom here this time around. Would love to hear your take on "The biggest single-nation fans of national football teams outside of their respective nations", however paraphrased your title may be.

Most definitely yes, and it's not even close. Neither the superbowl nor the most important event in the Olympics (whatever that is) can compare to the World Cup final.
As a Brentford fan, I would say that, after failing constantly in Championship playoff finals, and then finally winning one, the playoff final is the greatest game of all. No bias there. Edit just to clarify this was a joke...
Yes but for example, barely any Americans are gonna be like “ooo I wonder who will win the Championship playoff”. Here the champions league is the most popular. In order to be the largest it has to be everywhere But if we go off prize money, yeah you’re right
The World Cup Final is the world's biggest sporting event in terms of number of people excited about it. Nothing else really comes close. One major reason for this is that it only takes place every four years. Another is that nearly every nation on earth enters a team to attempt to win the thing.
Only the Summer Olympics can come close to it where many nations compete in different sports every 4 years, but yeah, the World Cup final will always be the biggest event in the World.
@@jp8146 Based on nations qualifying Olympics is bigger but on viewership FIFA World Cup is the only thing surpassing the Olympics. Viewership wise it's: 1. FIFA World Cup 2. The Olympics 3. Euro Cup 4. Cricket WC final (mostly cuz of India) 5. UEFA Champions League Super Bowl isn't even top 5 and outside USA nobody really cares about it either
Another indication is the amount of mind space the football World Cup occupies and how it captures the imagination of the people. All of the events mentioned other than the football World Cup is easy to miss.....an average person in my country could live a lifetime and still not know of the existence of the super bowl, tour de France, or the champions qualifiers let alone who participate or won these. But everyone has some idea about the progress of the football World Cup and is likely to atleast know who is playing the finals.
Exactly. I mean every single person from my tiny village from rural Romania, knows and watches the world cup (despite not qualifying ourselves since 98) and maybe 1 or 2 has heard of the super bowl, and that is from movies or tv shows.

May not even be the biggest but I've seen people go to unimaginable depths to watch the final, depths not seen in other sports (tournaments). Hell, a town in my country successfully managed to delay a power outage to the following day all because the final fell within the outage period. Had the request been for any other reason, I'm pretty sure it'd have been refused outright. The fact the finals involve Messi and Mbappe, I imagine we're gonna see some wild stories come out of this day.
@@davidohaegbulam9988 Can you imagine if the delay was scheduled for after 120 minutes of the game start thinking that would be enough only for the whole town to miss the penalties definition?
May not be the biggest event? Are you ignorant? Seriously watch what you say before saying it. Of course the World Cup is the biggest event in any sport ever and by light years! How dare you even question that?
The viewing figures of World Cup finals vs Champions League finals say yes it is. Over two billion people will be watching today. The fact that an entire country becoming officially the best in the world being a much bigger deal than a club being the best is another reason. World Cup only comes round every four years, Champions League finals are played every single season.
For the players, World Cup is not about money, but prestige. They are already paid millions by their clubs, so they don’t have to worry about their salary. This tournament is about the pride of representing your country in front of the entire world. The goal is not to get paid, but to be the World Champions of the most popular sport on Earth.
The super bowl here in America is watched by around 120 million in america and about 150 million people around the world on TV - a little over 1/3 of the country (but virtually everyone has super bowl parties and gatherings even if they arent just watching. but the world cup is watched by literally over a billion people. the super bowl just makes more because we have way more commercial breaks in our football Also on edit - Alfie, you really should check out how awful the American coverage of the world cup has been. yesterday the studio hosts dressed up as qataris and ran propaganda pieces with qatar sponsored influencers. we have been bombarded with pro qatar tourist ads for 4 weeks. its very different than the BBC lol
Also nfl stadiums tend to be bigger than all but the biggest soccer stadiums. The nfls minimum capacity for stadiums is 60,000 for example, but even the World Cup sets it at 40,000.
@@barry4649 the champions league is a much better comp to the super bowl. the best comp for the world cup is something like the olympics. but i dont think the champions league is much bigger than the super bowl

As a supporter of an outside the top 5 league team, i much prefer my team to win titles to being in the top 20 most valuable teams. Of course money is important but just because a team (and for example an event) is more financially successfull doesnt meant they are the most important. Even anecdotally, the fact that my family WhatsApp group was about as busy as it's ever been during the World Cup final, tells me the appeal of the tournament. 50% of the group don't even care about football, but the interest amongst almost everyone was intense. Pretty much everyone watching the game across several different timezones - none of whom are Argentine nor French. Just 77 people glued to the drama unfolding.
There is absolutely no way the audience for the 2011 Cricket World Cup Final was as low as 135 million people. India alone probably had double that amount of concurrent viewers, and global viewership probably wasn't too far off what was quoted - maybe 350 to 400 million viewers, considering that there's significant Indian population worldwide. Maybe the figure should be dropped slightly due to multiple people watching one TV screen, but the amount of people who watched the event live is probably close to what was quoted.

Think a major factor in the world cup never being called the 'football world cup' is FIFA insisting it's referred to as the "FIFA world cup" by the media and their increasingly prominent branding (e.g. FIFA being in a larger font than 'world cup' on official signs). A contributor to the situation is perhaps the role that the FIFA football series has had increasing awareness of the FIFA brand since its inception. I'd be interested to see a comparison with how things were in the 80s and earlier in terms of marketing and branding of the world cup.
Well most people generally drop the FIFA aspect and just state it as the world cup. I rarely see anyone outside of TV announcers call it a "FIFA" world cup, and even then they just state it as world cup, or copa mundial in Hispanic countries.
@@blackearl7891 Fair point but I'd say that's potentially not always true in countries where there's a world cup in another sport (e.g. cricket, rugby, ice hockey) that rivals the football one in popularity
FIFA is the international governing body of association football, so of course they're gonna add their name to the biggest event they held. It's no different than UEFA Champions League or NBA Finals.
It’s interesting since you mentioned F1. As a fan or at least these days a fairly jaded one the Champions League analogy rings true where more and more events are being added in order to maximise revenue and dilute the sport is very much true in F1 too. Also the chasing of Billionaire Despots in F1 would make even FIFA blush (well possibly not..)
In Australia, stadiums were almost full at 6AM in the morning (Yes, 6AM) to watch a football match (not the final) on TV screens! I have never seen scenes like that for any sport in Australia or around the World. Thousands more were in city centres watching World Cup games on TV screens at silly hours.
That doesn't give the correct impression however. Football is a minority sport in Australia, notwithstanding what you say. Yes, there were thousands gathered together to watch the Australian team at 6am in the morning, and even 1.7m watching on tv, but that still means that 95% of the country weren't watching. The TV audience for the final was 1m, about 4% of the population.

Americans will tell you the Super Bowl is the biggest sporting event on earth yet this year's Super Bowl had a lower attendance than the 2019 Checkatrade Trophy final between 2 League 1 clubs.
Simple argument - it is so easy (from an African perspective). Number 1: You can be piss poor and still play. You don't even need a proper football, in South Africa we took several plastic bags, bundled them together and wrapped them in an orange bag - that's how you make a football. Number 2: Still piss poor. put 2 bricks and that is how you create a goal Number 3: You can be from 5 foot 2 to all the way to 6 foot 8, nobody cares as long as you put in effort. Number 4: You only need boots (in Africa you can play bare footed even) and shin pads (here you can use cardboard for shin pads) Number 5: You don't need grass, you can play on concrete, sand, a desert and even on a beach. Those are some but there are more. Sad to see FIFA and UEFA make our sport more money driven (it sucks).
you are so right , but i dont think that the 1 reason is the most important , because there are a lot of sport that can be played if you are poor , but yes football can be played wit rocks , bags... as you said people from all type can play it , messi is the best and cristiano, haaland is 1.95 messi 1.70, but people confuses this with not having to be fit to play football
Personally in terms of calibre, only the Olympics and the WC are worthy of topping the list. Olympics cause there's more investment from every country participating and historically nearly every culture has a contest of sports domestically but WC can take it cause its the most popular sport in most countries
it‘s not about price money per se, but about getting into the prem, which is just flooded with absurd amounts of means and money, so that even small teams, who don‘t have any prospect of doing well during the season, get a huge chunk. That‘s how Forrest can spend so much without fearing financial ruin despite just having achieved promotion. Even if they go down again the revenue they are able to generate while in the prem will be easily sufficient to compensate the spending.
I think the ratings for the World Cup this time around is going to be *GIGANTIC* . Football has more followers because it was a European sport and when Europe colonized the world it spread football with it. Europe colonized Africa, Asia and South America, so the fact that football is popular in much of the world just reflects world history. It's the same reason that cricket is popular in India and Pakistan. America hasn't colonized other continents, so you wouldn't expect American football to have spread around the world.

There's no doubt that the World Cup is the biggest sport event, although I do appreciate a lot of what the Olympics brings to the table. But I'll chose not to pick and chose, and enjoy both
One more thing: has anyone looked up the viewing figures for the UEFA European Championship final and knockout stages? I was raised in the US and watched every major team sport growing up (basketball, American Football, baseball, hockey, association football). Sports are subjective so the "biggest event" is based on where you grew up and what you personally watch. There are tons of people who are single-sport fans who try to compare different sports and talk about sports they don't even watch. They tend to be the loudest people in these types of conversations. To be honest, I don't consider people who only watch one sport to be "true" sports fans. If you only watch futbol then you are ONLY a futbol fan and have no knowledge to talk about basketball, American football etc or if you only watch basketball then you have no knowledge to talk about cricket, futbol etc. Only multi-sport fans truly appreciate sports, it's the folks who watch one sport year round who talk the most trash because of their limited world view and prospective.

Unless your country doesn't have a team or your team was banned for starting a war, the World Cup is the only title that can be truly referred to as a World Title as it includes the whole world from the start of qualifying to the end with the Final.

Just about all the competitions listed here (except for the Super Bowl) include the whole world from qualifying to the end with a final. The World Cup Final is the world's biggest sporting event in terms of number of people excited about it. Nothing else really comes close.
One major reason for this is that it only takes place every four years. Another is that nearly every nation on earth enters a team to attempt to win the thing.

The viewing figures of World Cup finals vs Champions League finals say yes it is. Over two billion people will be watching today.

Number 2: Still piss poor. put 2 bricks and that is how you create a goal
Number 3: You can be from 5 foot 2 to all the way to 6 foot 8, nobody cares as long as you put in effort.
Number 4: You only need boots (in Africa you can play bare footed even) and shin pads (here you can use cardboard for shin pads)
Number 5: You don't need grass, you can play on concrete, sand, a desert and even on a beach.

Make a video on where luka modric ranks among all time great midfielders
Very simple. Number two behind Zidane, the goat.
@@waitbalthy6342 whoaa, slow down bud.. Modric's great, but I don't think that he's better than Xavi, Iniesta, Ronaldinho, Gerrard, Lampard, Scholes, Pirlo, and Vieira just to name a few.
@@idosabamemanuel5163 at that level it’s really hard too set them apart. I’m glad we can at least agree that Zizou is on top 😁
@@waitbalthy6342 I'm tempted to say Maradona's the best, but he occasionally played as second striker too.
Can't wait for the video about the new Club World Cup format.
Love both football and cricket! It’s great to have two world cups in the same year! Both bringing in billions of viewership!
No compare to FIFA world cup .
i respect people from india the people like sport . but brother cricket its very popular in india without india no body who is cricket ...
I know exactly the circumstances where I have been during every WC final since 1990. Can't say that for anything else in sports. Except specific cl finals or the Messi vs arsenal 4-0...
-Is the World Cup final the biggest sport event?
-Yes
Need a vid on what's going on in the A-League ASAP
I dont know if this comment will get noticed.. but i really wish HITC would cover the story of the most heated football rivalry in South East Asia.. Malaysia vs Indonesia
Hope Alfie can see this comment
the thing makes it heated is becuz indonesia. the country that has many uneducated people. look at the country's history as many people killed by football club rivalries.
I would like to know the importance of Brazil's audience in the World Cup.
We are the most populous of football-loving countries, and national team games are de facto holidays here.
Leo Pepsi... bigger then all NFL and US
It’s one of those questions that I think doesn’t need an answer. It’s the same with all “what/who is the greatest” questions. They’re all largely opinion based and answers can change by different definitions of what “greatest” or “biggest” means. A fun hypothetical question where it’s interesting to hear people’s opinions and reasons, but ultimately not that important
i think its not subjective, they are talking about what sport is most followed, another thing would be , what is the best sport? well , in usa football wouldnt be even the 5 , in my culture , spain , we live football as a religion, the other sport are basically not 10 percent as important , in india cricket i see is a religion , and i have not heard of it in 25 years , world is different
I'll save you 21 minutes of life: Yes.
I would put the rugby World Cup in there two … they had 1.5 billion viewers in the last World Cup final they always get massive viewership
Messi's finally done it
He's won it all.
Why india didnt ever qualify? It has 18% of the world population plus 500 plus million immigrants spread around the world? It's not as poor as South America and has *DEMOCRACY* ? Even Iran without the democracy and without the huge population plus it's in crisis 24/7, qualified...why ? Now don't deflect the topic by mentioning other sports or some CEO(since Indians always deflect the topic by mentioning this , when everyone knows no Indian CEO plays for FIFA) shit. Countries with *RICH CEOs* like Germany, France, USA, KSA qualified too...anyway.
ok Apu, tank u come again.
YES!!!!! don’t even need to watch the video to know this. I will watch it after the WC FINAL
I think no one who watchs only football considers themselves to be a sports fan, I've only seen it with gridiron football and baseball fans do it.
i consider myself as a truly sport fan i watch tennis football basketball and athletics , but he is just saying that football world cup is the most viewed event , and there is no lies about that, besides i am gonna give an opinion, just an opinion : i have played football tennis and done athletic all my life and there is no comparison with football , i know in some countries you see fotball as a secondary sport and i respect that, no ones has to like it , i treat football as a religion and maybe my neighbour does not give a shit about it but isee in football some things the other sport dont have
1:22 omg you got me good with that one 😂
2:35 DUDE YOU’RE GONNA KILL ME! 😂
World Cup because it is global...😊😊
WC is once in a lifetime for a lot of players. It's THE tournament to win. Your entire country is either good enough to qualify or it's not. There is no next year we'll get it.
Don’t know if I’m being harsh. But I’m starting to get a bit bored of these videos. At first I thought Alfie’s long video essays were very entertaining and full on interesting points and arguments.
But recently I’ve found that they are waaay longer than they need to be and 80% of the content in the video is just pointless rambling on about literally nothing before the point of the video is made ..
That's pretty true actually
Bro, a random group stage game is bigger than any other sport biggest game.....
If only FIFA can invite big artists to perform few hours before kickoff. It would be comparable to annual Super Bowl
Just kidding, FIFA World Cup Final is always bigger than UEFA Champions League Final, let alone Super Bowl
Lmfao, they tried that last year, and the singer was mad fans didn't give a shit.
@@blackearl7891 us football fans dont give a shit about artist , much less if she is an american girl who call it soccer , i just like some musician playing or singing champiosn league anthem like andrea bocelli
@@carloshoces7602 I know. I was laughing my ass off cause cabello was crying that they weren't paying attention to her. FIFA is desperately trying to recreate the superbowl
@@blackearl7891 yes jajaj it's horrible , do you like any performance in football finals or opening ceremony in particular ?
@@carloshoces7602 nah, I'm just there for the sport.
I still don't understand why the Super Bowl is compared to the World Cup or the Olympics. No one will sit and watch if the Super Bowl ever gets the Browns vs Lions, or Jaguars vs Commanders. lol
Ill save you 21 minutes… yes
To me if I was a player I’d want to win every trophy I physically could but the World Cup is the pinnacle. It’s the spectacle that I, a Rugby fan, always get pulled back to.
Instagram followers in M :
C.Ronaldo (footballer) - 520
Leo Messi (futbolista) - 406
Tom Brady (handegg player) - 13 😂
Of course the WC is the biggest
- Every year people care less and less about Olympics
- Only Americans care about NFL
- Most of people who watch tennis are people who grew up in wealth
- Golf is even more for wealthy people
Football is the sport of the mass
Doesn't matter how you grew up, doesn't matter where you came from
The world loves it, this is how countries all over the world compete against each other
Even during the war, the soldiers take a break to watch the match
So the WC is by far the main event in the planet
@@robierahg17 It's not soccer, it's football 😂
Even in the few countries which football isn't the favourite, it's the second favourite
Except USA, people in there have a heart made of steel 😁
So when you count the number of football fans worldwide, there is no sport which gets even close to that, the distance from the second place is massive
@@thkiwi1 Doesnt really matter the name (also, "soccer" originaly came from the British themselves lol), but theres no doubt football IS the biggest sport in the world
@Visitor7474 Maybe in your country it's like this, in other countries it's not
Tennis for example, it's interesting only when top 10 players are playing
Golf is always boring, doesn't matter how good the player is
Football is different from other sports, because in countries where people love football, they keep watching the competition even after their team gets eliminated
When the local team is out, people choose another one to cheer for
This is the magic of football, no other sport have that
@Visitor you cannot deny football is the most watched sport in the world , we can argue about other things. i love tennis and football, but i have seen many arguments trying to make football weak and nothing further from the reality, you may like cricket , tennis ... but football is more followed , in my country we talk about football tennis f1 basketball but you will not see one person talking about cricket or hockey , it does not mean it is not famous
