I really liked your point about the human on the sigil instead of an animal, symbolizing the Bolton's attitude toward humanity. I never put that together before, but that makes complete sense. Thank you!
If you turn the sigil into crucifix not changing it's colors but just turning the image of the flayed man from upside down to upright, and the "X" into a "T" or Cross. Would it be any better than the crucifix of Christianity
Notable, also, is that Ramsay was killed by (his) animals. "They're loyal" he states, but then we see that Sansa is right. When the animals are starving, they show their animal nature and feed upon him. :-|
And that the human is upside down, thus keeping him concious through the process. It shows that the Boltons weren't just mindlessly savage and sadistic. They knew how to effectively employ their sadism to the greatest effect.
Shreyas It's even more twisted that Ramsay was so cold that he switched clothes with him so Reek was killed and Ramsay escaped justice when Ser Rodrik was coming for him.
One problem with that sigil is that when it is placed on shields in the field of battle, the enemy is reminded that surrender leads to torture. This encourages the enemy to fight to the death. There may be times when the Boltons want to spare their soldiers and make a demand for surrender. The enemy would never agree to that.
It could also make them run, or better yet, deter uprising in the first place. When off the battlefield, the flayed man is a constant reminder of the penalty for stepping out of line. In battle, it could go both ways in terms of morale.
Mockingbird is not house Baelish symbol. Littlefinger took that symbol only for himself, and we don't have enough Baelishes for a sample to make a video.

What? Are you saying Lord Ramsay is some kind of . . . fucking CLOWN? Men have lost their skins for saying less than this. . . .and died, days later, covered in salt, and howling with remorse.
I will always find Roose more frightening then Ramsey. Calculating cruelty is always more menacing. But.... Reek didn't corrupt Ramsey. Reek...just kind of enabled it and the two liked eachother. As much as someone like Ramsey could like someone anyway
There is a certain randomness about Bolton cruelty that scares the shit out of me. As horrible as the Lanisters are, there's always a reason for their cruelty, but being cruel just for the sake of it, that's just scary but also fascinating, it's why even though I wanted Ramsay to die, I'll still miss him on the show.
Anyone else notice that during House Starks reign in Winterfell, there was at least a little sunshine that peeked out through the North’s rainy overcast sky. But, when House Bolton takes reign over Winterfell there’s not even a hint of sunlight throughout The North. I still wish the show had incorporated the pink color scheme the Boltons' banners had in the books instead of the generic red and black "bad guy" aesthetic. Pink Boltons was one of those cool unconventional details GRRM came up with, and also extra creepy that they literally color their sigil after the flesh of the people they flay. Ramsay in the show ended up being a hugely generic villain right down to the way he was dispatched in a conventional final battle with the good guys and then "ironically" eaten by his own dogs, and the change in color scheme reflected that.
Alex Furnas yeah, I really disliked Ramsay's death. It was weak, especially since we'd already seen the dogs eat people alive. I wanted Jon to just beat him to death.

I think that we’re forgetting something important. The only reason that Ramsay is alive is because Roose sees him as his son. He could have just killed his bastard, but he didn’t. There’s actually a scene that shows that no matter what, Roose will always know that Ramsay is his son.
Then again, Roose does remind him that he is a Snow, rather than Bolton. And I think there was that one time in the books where he straight up told him about the rape that gave birth to him.
One of the few Valyrian houses that came with the Targaryens. I wish they were in the show more as well. The Targaryens are not the last Valyrians. Hell, even the Baratheons are a Valyrian house, although greatly diluted through intermarriage with Westerosi houses. Orys Baratheon was a Valyrian general. Even their name, Baratheon, is clearly more related to Valyrian language than anything Westerosi. The other Valyrian house is House Celtigar.

I disagree with the video's notion that Roose isn't a gray character. He's the Tywin of the North, a sort of ruthless pragmatist. While he's hated for the Red Wedding, Roose had very good reasons for his betrayal. He knew the war was lost for the North. If you recall the Freys gave almost all their men to Rob when he crossed. He only had 400 to give. Robb would have likely lost the war anyway costing thousands more lives on both sides. To quote Tywin better to kill a few at dinner than thousands in the field. While his actions were despicable they can be justified if you look at it from his perspective. He wasn't totally evil, unlike his son.
yes, and no. The Red Wedding wasn't galling simply because it was brutal. It was galling because it was so unnecessarily brutal and the killers seemed to take so much pleasure in committing the act. Tywin Lannister would simply have murdered Robb and Catelyn Stark: and preferably kept his own hands clean of the deed. Other people might do despicable things, but the Boltons are the only ones who brag about brutality and indeed go out of their way to be brutal.
Sophie Jones I think Roose is a complete monster but without the massacre of the northern troops the deal would not work. Tywin needs to get rid of the enemy (and he doesn't take half measures, the Reynes and Tarbeks can attest) and Roose needs to bleed the other lords in order to maintain vast superior numbers under his command. Theon is aghast when he sees how overwhelming in comparison to other houses is the Bolton army when Roose returns home with the troops. Some houses from the North lose so much men thanks to Roose's calculating treachery they can barely pose a threat on their own. And in the books Roose, being tied by blood to Ryswells and Dustins, has powerful allies in the North as well. Not to mention the Karstarks and Freys. He will still lose though like Tywin did because thankfully GRRM is harsh but not nihilistic like some of his fans.

Ramsay was my favorite character in GOT. He was the true evil guy that this show needed. Eve though this season is still pretty good his absence is real :'(
She obviously only watches the show. Roose Bolton was loyal to Robb up until the point he married, broke his oath to the Freys, and killed Rickard Karstark. Why else would Roose lead the Stark infantry into a suicide battle with Tywin. Roose is not a good guy by any means, but he realized there was nothing to gain fighting for Robb Stark
vincent byas Hey guys I am a small RUclipsr with hopes of gaining lots of subscribers. If you don't want to subscribe I would love it if you could post some positive comments on my videos. I really appreciate it! :D
They tried but couldn't. The Starks would win some & the Bolton's would win some. The Bolton's weren't the #2 Northern House for nothing. After they bent the knee the Starks let them live bcz they were a powerful Northern House & in the North you need all the muscle you can get.
@@st4ne4rmthevill63 - But the Boltons weren't reliable. They were even a threat to the North. I don't believe in genocide, and at any given point in time there may have been Boltons like Domeric. But I'd execute every single person associated with that house who participated in torturing, raping, etc. And I'd execute every single leader who took up arms against the Starks and their allies. I'd level the Dreadfort, and there would no longer be a House Bolton. All of the survivors would be commoners. All of the houses that were their allies would be led by those who weren't executed. I would express sympathy for any who supported the Boltons out of fear. But for any who may have agreed with the Boltons, they would be warned that they would be executed and their houses would be ended like the Boltons, if they continued any funny business. You shouldn't be so desperate for protection that you'll keep a serious, ongoing threat next door. I'd raise common people to noble people and help them build new castles, before I'd tolerate the bad Boltons and people like them. The Starks could've also given the lands of the Boltons and their allies to Starks and their allies who weren't 1st or 2nd in line to be an heir within their household. For example, 3rd children or aunts and uncles. *Actually, ideally I'd try to lay groundwork to end that system of government and create a constitutional republic. But I doubt that the king and the other houses would be very happy about that.
no they shouldn't have. if they did, we wouldn't have the boltons in the show and one of the best things in a show are people which you can hate (like joffrey or ramsay)
Has Anyone else noticed this mistake they made? At around 1:18 Sansa is talking about how Ramsay hasn't fed his hounds in weeks, yet when Ramsay said earlier that episode he didn't feed his hounds in weeks sansa already left on her horse.
If I'm correct, Sansa left before Ramsey had fed his stepmom to his hound. Sansa's probably still assuming Ramsey hasn't fed them. Or, it's just a minor error that slipped through production.
How is anyone confused by this? They told her off screen, not everything has to be spelled out. Sansa: Where did you put him? Jon: In the kennel. Sansa: I'm going to see him. Jon: Be careful, he said he didn't feed the hounds in a week. That could've played out any number of ways.
Great video ! I'm suprised there is so much one can read into the boltons since they aren't a major house. Speaking of major houses please do the greyjoys next ! Their culture is so different from the rest of westeros
Corné Keetels there is no royland? The only royces we know of are waymar the one that died at the very beginning of the series, robar royce the one that died with renly and yohn the old lord who led the army.
star dust The english flag is just a red cross on a white field. The British flag is a combination of the Scottish and English flags, displaying the royal rule and dominion over both countries. afaik the Welsh aren't even included in the flag.
Red, White, and Black are the colors of the blood banner of the National Socialists and Hitler boasts of it in Mein Kampf. I think the show's art directors likely took more inspiration from that.
The Bolton banner has nothing to do with England, the Confederacy, or Nazism for that matter. The show obviously left out the pink, but black, white, and red have always been in use at the Dreadfort.
Is there any record of Roose Bolton actually being cruel? Seems like a lot of analysis that is based on Ramsey a bastard of a lord. Roose always seemed harsh/cruel like Tywin, not like Joffery.
There might not be records of him being super cruel in the show (except for the Red Wedding), but there are plenty in the books. Like they say, he still practices the "first night", which is an old (now forbidden) "tradition" where the Lord gets to sleep with any new wife. If you marry in secret and he finds out, the woman is raped anyway, and the man is killed. Roose rapes Ramsay's biological mother, and that right under the hanged body of her husband. He also cuts the tongue of her brother so he wouldn't repeat it to the Starks. His bastard kidnapped girls, then set them free and hunt them with his hounds. Then he raped and killed the girls, and the son's servant raped their dead bodies. Roose never stopped those hunts. He is the one who plans the Red Wedding (it is not Tywin Lannister who plans it). He whips people for simple thievery. He always chooses violence and death as an answer, the difference with Ramsay is that Roose is *quiet* about it. That's why you don't get as much info about it. Ramsay is dumber and doesn't care, he just enjoys torturing and does it without caring about being discreet about it. Roose is cold and calculating, he makes sure what he does doesn't attract attention on him.
Well she was not nobility so that could be checked off as a bored noble on a Tuesday but not really cruelty for the era this is supposed to be based on
"After finally training Sansa to master the art of cruelty" Sansa is anything but cruel. She is one of the rare characters who rarely takes extreme measures. And killing Ramsay is the only murder she got to execute, although indirectly, but righteously.
It's not an embrace of evil, it's an willing acceptance of doing what's needed to win and dominate through whatever means necessary. I wouldn't say roose was evil, tho Ramsey was
Can you imagine trying to join the Bolton Army? Either you had to be considered a serious bully or a hole to consider a life in that regiment, the rookie hazing must be brutal.
No Pls i know he is. But not in the books, Unless the show merges the storyline of robin and harry. Spoilers for books Sansa is still in the vale in the books, baelish intends on killing sweetrobin and make harry the lord the vale and marry him to sansa. Harry is the spitting image of young jon arryn and is also a good fighter
I don't think Roose was evil. As he himself stated, he would have been more loyal to Robb had he not been so cocky and take advice from his counselors (Roose included). Looks like Lord Royce was still practicing the "first night" in Braveheart.
8:30 Sansa intentionally didn't tell Jon of the Vale army because she wanted Jon and his army to die. There was absolutely no reason not to tell Jon of the possibility of getting the Vale army other than betrayal.
I wish they kept the light pink color in the sigil. Ramsey wears pink a lot in the books. It would be interesting to see if he is as frightening in pink...
It's ScreenPrism not BookPrism, and there's very little substantive material for any of those houses in the show. Greyjoy maybe, but they haven't been explored in any depth since Season 2. There's just not much Tully material, and the Martell material is thematically incoherent garbage.
Alex Furnas Well, she has A Song of Ice and Fire and A World of Ice and Fire to take informations from. I liked House Martell a lot in the books, and they have an interesting history with princess Nymeria and Rhoynars (I think I misspelled it, sorry). But yea, in the show, the house is garbage, not having Aegon, the prince of Dorne is being seen as an useless person, which is a shame, because he is really cool with his plans of revenge
Next time show wants to convince us these guys are master flayers, try and make sure the actors in question can peel an apple with a knife: that scene with Ramsay and Osha was as distracting af.
Psycologic abuse is both underrated and, somehow, hereditary. Aparently, it tends to be passed on from generation to generation... fascinating, thou terryifing. There are cases in wich you can cut the line, but victims allways keep some remains of trauma
And how is the Dreadfort "Structurally unimpressive"???? It held off the Starks in the longest siege in history. Over 2 fucking years. That's a pretty damn good Stronghold if you ask me. If it was structurally unimpressive, I don't believe it would have been able to perform the way it did.
Yeah that irked me. Aesthetics were left out too. It's got "teeth", thought that ought to have been mentioned. Plus it's like a crypt without natural light and black walls, with skeleton hands holding torches.

Rot Ten exactly, there is so much weird shit happening already that vampires would be shrugged off 😂
I love how that Lord from the Vale (whos name always forget) was in Braveheart. You can tell by his remarkeable voice :D
It’s Lord Royce, played by Rupert Vansittart
They steal skin..the end
boltons and faceless men are best friends
Blitzkrieg hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

I'm reading that you the time of eddy guerrerro
For sport.
A naked man has few secrets , a flayed man none.
Our Blades are sharp !
You know its gonna be a great day when Screenprism uploads a video.
Ramsay is innocent. His enemies poisoned his father and killed his newborn brother. #prayforRamsay
Peake Performance The funniest comment of the year lmao
Peake Performance #justiceforramsey
Peake Performance 😂😂😂
Ramsay did nothing wrong 😝
Ramsay is a funny man despite his actions
Ramsay was my favorite character in GOT. He was the true evil guy that this show needed. Eve though this season is still pretty good his absence is real :'(
I'VE WAITED FOR THIS!
Ramsey Bolton is one of the best villains ever.
1:23 Roose is ruthless. After inheriting the Lordship... Ramsey is Rooseless 8)
Jon went to meet Daenerys to get that Dragon Glass.
Now hes after that Dragon Ass.
Mikey T 😂😂😂
Mikey T funny and original
Mikey T stop stealing jokes m8 I have that meme
@Nunovia Gottdamnedbizzness I have and its good 😎
@@Syndixal 😏👉👉
4:58 why didnt we never see Stannis sitting on that throne? Dude I really hate Dumb and Dumber
That is true. They said publicly they've never liked the character.
Don't know about that considering she mentions reek.
I clicked faster than my father left us
TheMlado13 Oh shit. Sorry mate.
A man killed him.
Jaqen H'gh

BUT WILL RISE AGAIN, HARDER AND STRONGER!!
vincent byas Hey guys I am a small RUclipsr with hopes of gaining lots of subscribers. If you don't want to subscribe I would love it if you could post some positive comments on my videos. I really appreciate it! :D
Will you do the Greyjoy house next? I would love a deep analysis of their sigil and words. Thanks for the videos!!!
The Starks should have killed the Bolten's entire family when they first fought them before the Dragon Kings.
Indeed. A cruel family like that cant be allowed to live yet alone trusted. Do what Tywin would have done.
Royce II and Royce IV shold have flayed all the Starks
This episode really got UNDER MY SKIN.
Ramsay Bolton was masterfully acted. You really do hate him as you watch. Credit to the actor, Iwan Rheon.
Please, make an Episode about House Tully. Thank you.
Jahvone Davis Nah it's pretty bs.
Gootothesecond doesnt work like that.
Gootothesecond Nope we don't have to babysit the show. They could've talked about it in a throwaway line.
Easily one of my favorite tv show/ movie villains.
Great video ! I'm suprised there is so much one can read into the boltons since they aren't a major house. Speaking of major houses please do the greyjoys next ! Their culture is so different from the rest of westeros
House Bolton , the only house that seems evil just for the sake of evil in game of throne, yet it worked so well.
This is pretty much just based on Ramsey not house Bolton
House arryn next please !
did you catch Ser Royce in this video?
itsgoingtobealtright. Ser royce ?
Royland Royce, leader of the knights of the vale
Corné Keetels there is no royland? The only royces we know of are waymar the one that died at the very beginning of the series, robar royce the one that died with renly and yohn the old lord who led the army.
/pol/ 18th armored autism batallion Yes my friend. Our turn.
I'm glad you guys are making these videos.
this has to be the best video about GoT symbolism so far. loved it
No offense, but Bolton's symbols remind me of England flag!
star dust The english flag is just a red cross on a white field. The British flag is a combination of the Scottish and English flags, displaying the royal rule and dominion over both countries.
afaik the Welsh aren't even included in the flag.
Reminds me of the confederate flag
Red, White, and Black are the colors of the blood banner of the National Socialists and Hitler boasts of it in Mein Kampf. I think the show's art directors likely took more inspiration from that.
Thomas Baird I don't know if that's a insult or a compliment but since I like the boltons I'll take it as a compliment ☺
The Bolton banner has nothing to do with England, the Confederacy, or Nazism for that matter. The show obviously left out the pink, but black, white, and red have always been in use at the Dreadfort.
"The Boltons sure are mean huh?"
Wow that's some deep symbolism.
Do House Mormont
We will!
Thank you screenprism, I love this channel!!!
Ramsay was easily my favorite character. I loved that entire arc.
Cant get enough of tour GoT vídeos! Congrats as always great job!
House Martell next!!
Unbowed. Unbent. Unbroken.
I swear, the first time I saw the thumbnail, I thought it said "Got symbolism?"
Is there any record of Roose Bolton actually being cruel? Seems like a lot of analysis that is based on Ramsey a bastard of a lord. Roose always seemed harsh/cruel like Tywin, not like Joffery.
there are too few boltons to make a conclusion
mikecala7 What about the fact that he raped Ramseys mother underneath her husband's hanging body? Pretty sure that's considered cruel.
Blah Blah, hahaha... ha... h..
Well she was not nobility so that could be checked off as a bored noble on a Tuesday but not really cruelty for the era this is supposed to be based on
The Braveheart clip features Rupert Vansittart who plays Yohn Royce on GoT.
"A quiet land.... a peaceful people... that has always been my rule".
-Roose Bolton.
YES!!!! This is the video I was waiting for!
"After finally training Sansa to master the art of cruelty"
Sansa is anything but cruel. She is one of the rare characters who rarely takes extreme measures. And killing Ramsay is the only murder she got to execute, although indirectly, but righteously.
That's a lot of "rare"
2:35 brotherly love at it's finest
It's not an embrace of evil, it's an willing acceptance of doing what's needed to win and dominate through whatever means necessary. I wouldn't say roose was evil, tho Ramsey was
Wrong. Flaying skins is not needed to win. The DO embrace evil.
Ramsey Bolton was probably a more capable general than all the other characters in GOT to guard the North against the White Walker army.
The white walkers know no fear. So, no. I doubt that.
You do very fascinating reviews of the houses. I'd like to see how you do House Tully, House Aryn and the Dothraki.
Thank you! I really enjoy all your house breakdowns.
Abnormal conception seems to be a trait shared by a few dispicable villains. Voldemort anyone?
Yes I did just compare Ramsay to Voldemort.
Good video, it almost send shivers down my spine to think that humans are capable of such things. Thankfully these Boltons are only in a storybook.
Roose didn't die in the books, yet.
Can you imagine trying to join the Bolton Army? Either you had to be considered a serious bully or a hole to consider a life in that regiment, the rookie hazing must be brutal.
First. Again.
Long live House Arryn.
Marka Biti AS HIGH AS HONOR
As high as Honour. Yet it's being ruled by people with no Honour
No Pls i know he is. But not in the books, Unless the show merges the storyline of robin and harry.
Spoilers for books
Sansa is still in the vale in the books, baelish intends on killing sweetrobin and make harry the lord the vale and marry him to sansa.
Harry is the spitting image of young jon arryn and is also a good fighter
Artys Arryn was the best fighter in the Realm. Rode a huge falcon, if the legend is true of course
Marka Biti
Werent the words of house arryn high as honor?
Okay you guys seriously deserve more views , you're videos are so well made!
One of the greatest " villains" in GoT
My favourite house along with the Tyrrels 🌹 Everything has a reason and everything makes sense. Thank you for the vid
Let us not forget the cruelty put upon Lady Hornwood..
Now l feel like I started to read the books again. Many thanks to ScreenPrism.
I don't think Roose was evil. As he himself stated, he would have been more loyal to Robb had he not been so cocky and take advice from his counselors (Roose included). Looks like Lord Royce was still practicing the "first night" in Braveheart.
7:00 That guy from Braveheart is the same actor who Plays Lord Royce in Game of Thrones.
It would be interesting to see if he is as frightening in pink...
i cant believe you made this before martell, greyjoy, tully
Icanohzyl I hope they do a Martell video
Me neither , now i love them for doing it first , ours is the flay
showsrunners ruined Martells
Icanohzyl bcz they all suck honestly.
Your channel is gold!
Please do House Clegane!
Lool the take channel has such an amAzing way to breaking down characters. Like on a 10 dimensional scale
New episode 6 of game of thrones today 😝, Also i miss house bolton they where a great evil house 😞☺️
nitestrikebg ehh i dont really mind kid theres still more episodes coming, i already new a dragon was going to die
cause you are a fan of the bolton's
tbf not all boltons are evil
That clip of Theon getting slapped was played so many times throughout this video lmao
Next time show wants to convince us these guys are master flayers, try and make sure the actors in question can peel an apple with a knife: that scene with Ramsay and Osha was as distracting af.
The thing is why send armies to thier deaths when you can make other houses so scared they never want to go against you
Psycologic abuse is both underrated and, somehow, hereditary.
Aparently, it tends to be passed on from generation to generation...
fascinating, thou terryifing. There are cases in wich you can cut the line, but victims allways keep some remains of trauma
ah, once again you have made an interesting and enjoyable video about the houses. Thank you so much! :)
House Greyjoy next!
The music played at 0:06. Does anyone know the title?
Should have checked the credits in the end earlier...
It's "Lush Island - Seems like over",
if anyone's interested.
Where do you find that
And how is the Dreadfort "Structurally unimpressive"???? It held off the Starks in the longest siege in history. Over 2 fucking years. That's a pretty damn good Stronghold if you ask me. If it was structurally unimpressive, I don't believe it would have been able to perform the way it did.
Zurrgo Maybe she meant aesthetically? Idk that's the only thing I can think of.
Yeah that irked me. Aesthetics were left out too. It's got "teeth", thought that ought to have been mentioned. Plus it's like a crypt without natural light and black walls, with skeleton hands holding torches.
