I just replace my factory 2015 KTM Super Duke 1290 R clutch slave cylinder with the Oberon unit and their billet spacer. I inspected mine and found it to have the identical crack around plunger nipple. Replacing it was a breeze because of your video, much appreciated! Your little trick to bleed the slave cylinder saves a lot of time. I however did not reverse bleed the clutch line. Just filled it from the top and bleed the clutch lever from the top. Super easy to do, it took very little fluid. Test ride, it's all good. Clutch engages right away with very little take up. Action was smooth and a little easier to pull then stock. I will bleed the clutch lever again in a day or so just to make sure there aren't any air bubbles trapped in the line.
Good man. Thanks for the feedback and glad it helped!
Not sure if you're still reading comments, but Oberon referred me to this vid as I was having troubles bleeding all the air out of the Oberon on my SDR, Just wanted to say your method worked perfectly and I greatly appreciate the quality of this vid.
EDIT: Unfortunately, shortly after I posted this comment I had ongoing issues with excessive free play and narrow clutch friction zone. Multiple bleeds failed to resolve it. I ended up returning the unit for a refund.
You serious? Oberon sent you to my video? That's inanse...well, I'm glad it helped!
The same thing happened to me on my 2022 1290R Superduke Evo, it left my Wife & I stranded on the side of the road. My bikes been in the shop almost 4wks waiting for KTM to get the part to my dealer. Thanks to your video I'm going to order the Oberon and get it to my dealer, we'll discuss reimbursement for the stock piece of garbage later.
2022 and had a problem already? Not great... I have to say, the more I think about it the more issues I hear with KTMs. I love the bikes, but they do have some issues.
Awesome walkthrough and explanations dude. Installing the Oberon on my 1290 this evening, gonna use this as a guide.
Good luck bud!
Thanks MackieBass,
You're a star!
I don't normally do my own mechanics but I have a ride out booked for tomorrow and my local workshop couldn't fit me in until next week. I wouldn't have taken this on without your excellent tutorial. But with your help I've done a super job.
In celebration, I rode over to my mechanic and cancelled the job for next week. He was super impressed with my work.
I'm looking forward to my ride tomorrow, I hope you enjoy the beer! 😃 🍺

Wow! Thank you so much Joanna! I do appreciate it. I'm glad it helped and good to hear it has improved your bike! Ride safe!
Fantastically helpful video. I was in two minds if I really needed to buy the mounting plate, so your advice has reassured me that it is not obligatory. Thanks again.
Glad it helps
Nice upgrade buddy, nothing like having a healthy wheelie lever..! and Oberon !.. Top Kit.!
I wanted that Oberon part for quite some time...never really could justify the upgrade...until the original broke (yes!)
Great video and very handy to know how to upgrade it👍 keep the fantastic vids coming for our Ktm 990 👍👍👍
Really good job, great vid as usual Mackie! Glad you got your superduke back out on the road so you can have some fun!
Surprised about the hairline crack, good spotting, great there is an aftermarket option. I love my Superduke, after a track day recently i really want to put a quick shifter on mine....Thanks for posting keep the great vids coming ;)
Thansk bro. Glad you like it and I heard the quickshifter is a really good option for the SD. Let m eknow if you get one.
Thank you. Great video. Lovely and clear, and very sensible instructions. I feel much more confident about getting mine sorted now!
Glad it helps
Best clutch bleed video for lc8 on RUclips! Nice work, sir.
Glad you liked it!
@@MackieBass when you installed the ball bearing, did you push it down through that grease? It appeared you did, and I'm just curious...
Cheers!
thank you for sharing! Will help me to service my KTM where I had issues to get the air out after replacing the slave clutch cylinder
Good to hear man. I'm glad it helps a little.
Thanks mate! My Oberon slave for my 1090R is on the way, good video about what and what not to do!
Glad it helped :)
Very helpful bud! I noticed some oil on the floor so Im going to check those parts you showed, mine is a 950 SMR, I guess they share same parts, thanks for the video/explanation
Same engine, just carb and not FI, other than that no differences really...
Just did this on my SD990 2006, worked great! Like the feel of this a lot better over stock
It sure was. yes.
Big thanks! Especially for the hint of bleeding it upside down I'm really greatful for, and for emphasising that tiny crack. Have similar clutch issues but never examined that nipple in that detail. So I'm gonna look again...
Glad it helped!
Hey brother , a great
Guide to replacing the slave cylinder , you did well to spot the crack in the original part you must have good eyes 👍🏻great to see you on the tube brother , look forward to meeting you again for real sometime . Take care peace and Love brother 👍🏻☮❤
Hey man, remind me again where about are you based? Maybe I'll pop in for a cold one with the missus ;)
Thank you for making this video, Oberon part arrived earlier this and plan to fit today and thought I’d see if anybody had posted something, and you did! Agree about the SD990, never selling mine!
Glad I could help!
Great job Mackie i find back filling with syringe works on brake cylinders as well.cheers
Great hearing you say that.
I'm struggling with refilling a front brake after a caliper swap. Haven't got access to a vacuum bleeder.
Just on a whim, I went to the pharmacy, bought myself a large syringe, to try backfilling. Haven't tried yet, but sounds like it can be done.
Not having the right tools sucks.
@@thefreedomguyuk Yes, yes and yes. It does work on brakes too. Even easier, as break hoses are slightly larger, so it is easier to push through :) Working with the laws of physics...not against it :)
Thanks man! Used your video next to my bike! And the clutch is smoother then ever! 💪🏽💪🏽
Great to hear!
Excellent job explaining this. Now to go find a syringe!
Great video Mackie, will be rewatching when the Oberon slave cylinder arrives for my 1290 GT & it's time to install
Well done my friend, so many people overhype bleeding their KTM slave cylinders by reverse bleeding with 2 syringes and overcomplicate what is essentialy a simple job. as you have done the conventional way and with a tube, little oil and in my case a 9mm spanner can be done at the side of the road A++++++
Amen, glad it was helpful my friend.
Subscribed, bro. Great vid! Love the shop. I have a 2018 super adventure s that I have put 26k miles on since new. Using this guide to install the oberon coming on Monday! You are a rockstar, sir:)
Thank you kindly sir. I m glad it helps
Nice bit of troubleshooting and excellent spot on that. Nice walkthrough on the bleeding too. Great upgrade and good to see that you are looking after my bike 😂😆Skäl David
You nailed it..
As I am selling it
MOT tomorrow... fleabay shortly after. Unless you want it?
@@MackieBass Shame, I do, but don't have that sort of cash at the moment
@@MotoMirius monthly installments? :)
MackieBass three year payment plan? How much are you looking for? I don’t even know how much I’d get stung for insurance - I’m in one of the top theft postcodes in the UK :(
@@MotoMirius I'm looking for around £4k, but I'd give you a deal;) yeah, theft is a worry. Get a Rottweiler! KTM comes with one ;)
Thanks for the video. I was thinking of getting one of these for the lighter clutch pull. I dont have any problem launching but in traffic the heavy lever gets old quick. Keep up the great video's
Cheers man!
Will be changing mine ASAP and will now be doing it myself after watching you, thanks for your time on this bud as they are known to go pear shaped
Glad it helps bro
Great vid! Thank you! Time to tackle my 1290 SAS 🔧🏍️
Good luck!
Well this is a great video, replacing mine on a 990 SuperMoto next weekend
Loved that bike! Good luck mate.
MackieBass, thanks for showing us this great technique to minimize air bubbles. One thing to note is that you should protect all your painted surfaces as the brake fluid will eat it up quickly.
Yes. But ain't no brake fluid...it's mineral oil. Nice and safe :)
Excellent vid, dude. Very helpful. I've got an '11 990SMT.
That's a weapon!
Another great video Mackie...You did well to spot that crack in the piston.
Thanks Ant, It's all sorted now! Ride time!
I did this many years ago but I don't remember taking that plastic backing plate out, like you did. I don't think it's necessary to do so but, like I said, it's been perhaps 10 years ago since I visited that connundrum.
I can't remember now, it has been a few years back and I no longer have the bike :(
@@MackieBass I see, I got another one a few days ago. Some people never learn!
Detailed and very useful.
Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
What happens if that loose tiny rod goes missing? The clutch won’t function?
I'm pretty sure you need it. It may function without it, but its there for a reason, but I didn't design that clutch, so can't answer what it's purpose is.
Great job man, really appreciate the info,I just bought a 2013 990 baja.Upgrade in the future.
Good choice!
Great informative video, going to upgrade slave on my RSV HAGA REP and was looking to see how to do it. Cheers
It's an overall guide and I'm glad it helps. You have to remember that I am no mechanic, so make sure you follow the manual :)
Very nice Video dude! Fun to watch and very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Cheers Mackie, just received my Oberon part today! Feel confident enough now to change it myself after watching your video. I had a similar problem were the fluid was being pushed past a faulty
o ring in the cylinder. That fluid that gets pushed through ..do I have to worry about were it went? Any chance its now mixed with engine oil and I need to do an oil change?
Possible it's a stupid question, but if you don't ask you don't learn.
Thanks.
Hey man. That fluid cannot physically enter the engine oil. It's only hydraulic pressure to operate the slave cylinder to push the clutch mechanism. So don't need to worry about that, but do inspect it for any damage or cracks etc, as it can be part of a bigger picture. Double check you manual and installation instructions, my video may help, but I'm no expert buddy. Good luck and stay safe.
thanks for the video. Do you have one also to manage the change of the shaft seal ring behind the slave clutch cylinder?
I don't think I do, no. But check my channel, I may be wrong.
Hello mackieBass!
I have similar symptoms.
While riding yesterday, it happened twice.
I pressed my clutch and my bike still wanted go forward but after some minutes later the clutch restarted to work.
I haven't open nothing yet I want to learn first.
Bt did your bike was doing the same?
it was, but it didn't fix itself. Had to replace it as it was only going to get worse.
Great video, very detailed. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Great video! I’ve just changed mine but it seems to be a little bit of fluid between the banjo and bleeding screw. And I’ve tightened both bolts after driving and it doesn’t seems to work. I wonder if I maybe placed the hose at the wrong place, do you think it can cause a leak?
Without seeing it I cannot tell, sorry.
I'm assuming you've got this fixed from nearly a year ago!
But for anyone else the bleed nipples do weep a bit of fluid past the screw threads when bleeding and they need a good bit of torque for such a small screw, leading to knackered threads over time and repeated bleeding.
Another thing you will find is the copper sealing washers between the banjo will compress, so it's wise to leave things overnight and tighten the bolts up again the next day.
So yeah, if you change your lines or parts, just nip things up a second time to ensure that everything is tight.
Trust me, I learn things the hard way!
Informative video as usual Mr. Bass, rock hard and have a 🍺
Thanks Mick, rock hard indeed dude!
Thank you for the video and step by step!
Thnx for the video, Just installed on my 1190, it works and goes easy, but the neutral is little bit an issue, sometimes hé doen t find neutral, like a ducati, is this normal, when riding goes ok and not always have this problem, or better to ride a few days and bleed again?
I'd bleed it again for sure. Never had a problem with a N on my 990
Thank you very much for your clips! it helps perfect!
Happy to help!
let me know, if you change the superduke chain! 😅😅 Best regards from austria
great vid. I need to do this to my 990 SD
go for it
Great video. It helped me a lot. Thanks Mate.
Glad it helped
Do you still own the 990 Mackie? How would you rate it if you do? I am really conflicted at the moment about which 'fun' bike to buy myself and the 990 SD is high up on the list.
Oh man, go for the SD990 all day every day. It is the most fun I had on a motorcycle full stop :)
@@MackieBass thanks man, i am torn between that or XSR900, different bikes but like them both for different reasons.
Thank you, eventually did it today.
Any better now?
@@MackieBass yes thank you.
When I took my old one off, half the circlip had perished.
Thought it would be hard to push the fluid up with the syringe, but was easy, did a few pumps with clutch lever to get some fluid out and all good.
So thank you again.
Excellent video, cheers
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video!
Thank you
Thank you 😊
Great Job Mackle 👏👌🏻🤘🍺🍺
Cheers Chris, appreciated.
its the engine not leaking wile you do this job if you keep it on the central stand?
No, why would it?
What clutch master cylinder other then the original KTM u recommend..any ideas?
Never replaced it, so can't recommend anything...
hello, will we leave this little axis up or cancel it? I'll put the bomb out rsrmoto
what?
Quality video
Cheers!
Why would you choose for an oberon cylinder over the OEM cylinder? i have problems with my clutch and i am tempted to buy the oberon one.
The poem broke. The oberon got better ratings and it was actually cheaper than the oem. So I thought I'll try it. It is lighter. I like it
@@MackieBass thankyou! ill consider buying an oberon too.
@@4869498 Stock one is known to be a really weak point on the bike - Oberon has double o rings on the piston and made from much better materials. Definitely worth upgrading as OEM will fail at some point like mine just has at 15k miles!
great vid have to do that exactly
Well I'm glad the timing is right. Hope it helps a little bit.
