Using Schleich Animals to Learn to Draw and Sculpt

- Our local feed store carries the Schleich line of toy animals, and I tend to add a new one to my cart whenever I go in for chicken food. They have lots of wild animals, and farm animals, and even some dinosaurs. Some of them aren't as realistic as others, but most of them make good reference materials for a drawing or sculpture.
I just found the Volnau brand of tiny animals that include sea creatures, too. From the photos, they look quite realistic, but I haven't seen any of them up close yet. Their sets include more animals than the Schleich brand, so that might be a better way to build up a collection.
If your farm store doesn't carry them, you can find the Schleich collections on amazon.com here: amzn.to/48w6VIa
And you can see the Volnau collections here: amzn.to/48RZCKC
If you'd like to read Temple Grandin's book that I mentioned at the front of the video, you can find it here: amzn.to/47AWDp3
And I think the book that talked about the depressed liopard was "Animals in Translation:" amzn.to/47xfdym

The 3D pattern that you just saw in progress should be finished next week - I still have to paint her, and then write the instructions, but it should be done soon.

Having references is really important to take our work to the next level. People may not have access to a model but we can often find toys and other 3D representations. Thanks for another great lesson.
Our feed store has Schleich animals too. They really bring out my inner child. I am really enjoying your newsletter.
They are fun, aren't they? I'm glad you like the newsletter! 😊
I've been collecting these for awhile. I think the models help children draw, instead of being asked to use imagination.
Love the Schleich animals, I started with some dairy cattle many years ago because I was born on a dairy farm. Now I have well over a hundred farm and zoo animals. I am having trouble stopping collecting them. They are fabulous for using for drawings. Making Art is fabulous therapy it can be frustrating at times but then we have to search to figure out how to make something work..or create the right colour… I just saw your videos recently and love your masks…
Have you figured out a way to organize all your Scheich animals? I have a hard time with keeping small things like that from ending up in odd drawers, but it sounds like you have an actual collection, so you must display them somehow? (And thanks for your kind comments about the masks. 😊)
Temple Grandin makes total sense
She does - I really love reading her books, because I learn something important while enjoying the stories.
I totally agree 👍 having “models “ ,..pictures ,..videos of the animals is crucial!! Also muscles and joints, bones 🦴,…yep the more information you have about the subject the better!! Unless you’re doing Fantasy creatures,…but you still need a good idea of how this “animal “ works in practice.
I think it might be even more important with fantasy creatures, because it isn't easy to make them believable. Which reminds me - with all the talk about UFO's recently, I've been thinking about starting a UFO art challenge. It would be fun to see what people think creatures from outer space look like. But what references would we use for them? 🤔
I really enjoyed hearing your take on this-so cool to see you and many of the commenters using these for reference! I have a big collection, several different brands, and I use them myself and take them to my art classes for students to use. A lot of times students are taken aback that I don't have photos for them to work from, but once they have the experience of drawing from three dimensions, they understand the benefit. People come to my studio and see them all lined up, and some people think it's weird that I have "toys", but other people get it right away and are delighted. Anyway, they do make me really happy!
I love the idea of using little animal figurines as references. It’s interesting and so very true that we humans have a need to “search”. I searched and found that this wonderful papier mâché art form has truly been so therapeutic.
I love all of your animal art and the details in your wildlife portraits and sculptural pieces. 💖😍👍
Fantastic idea. I've passed by those little plastic animals at Tractor Supply many times and never had an excuse to buy any, but now...
I have a funny story about these models. The company also makes knights, dragons and mythical creatures. I do a lot of crafting and made a lot of gifts for my niece and nephew (dolls, ornate Halloween costumes to their specifications like armor and a gorilla suit with “real fake fur” and hands feet and mask). I’d also get the knights for them. My nephew is so sweet. He thought I was sculpting the toys as well! So cute!! Loved this video. Thank you.
You are such an inspiration to me!! I love to work with my hands and have wanted to make the bowls especially!! Thank you so much for sharing your talent with us!!! You are a treasure!!❤❤
You are so welcome! 😊
Love the Schleich models. We ended up with many feed store purchases, too! Years ago my older son had every single one of the dinosaurs while my girls had all the sheep and goats.
Great job tying art with Temple's thoughts. Blends well. Love the models suggestion also. Thank you.
I love the movie about Temple Grandin! I can relate to a lot of what she is saying about not fitting in. I don't think in images as absolutely as she does though.
I don't think there are many people who do - and she says there are a lot of different ways to 'think in pictures,' and not just the way she does it. I can't wait to read the book - this weekend, for sure!
Just got your Gesso Joint compound recipe from 8 years ago. Saw it back then and never actioned it lol. Time flies. Love your creations ❤❤❤❤
Beautiful I love what Temple has to say about seeing things in a certain way! I have been collecting those animals also just because how good it is to see a little shape or detail that you just don’t know in your head
I really love your videos! You always get the ol thinker going! I am so inspired to do some new art pieces! Thank you!
I'm so glad! Have fun with your next project! 😊
Agree on Temple Gradin & yes to 3D "toys". As long as the proportions are right, very valuable! (And like you said, not always perfect, but helpful !)
Just saw a video from you and then stumbled across this one. I sculpt animals in ceramic and discovered the Schleich models about a year ago. Although I have loads of photos these models really do help. I totally agree about art helping with mental health. When doing my sculptures there is really no room for any other thoughts. Thank you for your well made videos.
Always enjoy your videos ❤ I agree that art is definitely therapeutic. I procrastinate a lot and I find organising my art and craft supplies is soothing if I don't feel that I can start a project.
Maybe I should organise less and then I would be rewarded with finding things more often 😂
Too ! Funny!! Geepers!! I thought 💭 that I was the only ONE!! ,..no I don’t want to make a mess,….sooooooo ill just organized my paint ,..
Ok but ,…I’ve been organizing my studio for 23 years ,…. LOL!
Seriously ! This person is insane! That’s what makes her so talented!!
Comment! Ppl! It’s good for the channel! ,…just say “hi” liked the video. Please! Like and comment!!
I have the opposite problem - I should organize a lot more than I do. I tend to set things down in whatever room I'm in, and then I can't find them without walking all over the house. The studio does have a place for everything, but it only helps if you put things back where they belong! I do manage to get stuff done occasionally, though. 😊
I agree that the 3D animal toys are great. They help me to get things proportional. I guess my biggest problem is that I am not real patient and I want it to look real. Art can be therapeutic but it can be frustrating. I guess you have to find the balance between your ability or skill level and your willingness to except something that is not perfect. I am retired and I have a lot of time on my hands. It is far better to create something than vegetate in a chair doing nothing. Your video's sort of make me think that just maybe I could do this or that. I try many forms of art but I really need to slow down and make a plan. You are the best!!!!!!!
Thanks, Alan. I think I might like paper mache so much because you can do something different every time and do a lot of experiments. And if any particular project doesn't work, it really doesn't matter. Just do it again, or do something else. It's a good medium for people who don't want to do the same thing every time. 😊
Great insights. Also, you can scale UP the shadow with lighting to get perfect silhouettes for patterns
Great tip! I hadn't thought of that, but you're absolutely right. Thanks. 😊
Im in total agreement and its a great excuse to buy more.
Hello, first time sending you a comment but have watched some of your videos for a while now
I also love the Schleich toy animals as well, the problem is i like too many 😅
Another toy I also like to collect are Cadbury Yowies, they have a great range of different range of animals and bonus chocolate comes with it😊
They are of course much smaller then Schleich toys but they do come with a little bit of information about the animal and where they come from, they are great for practice drawing or making a model when you are stuck for ideas or just for a quick reference😄
Genius❤
😊
❤
I want to write books like you do
Do it! I've had so much fun with the books. I hope you start one soon. 😊
What do you think of the Breyer horses?
Just discovered your channel, love your work and book recommendations too. if you,ll allow me an off topic question, where did you purchase the bird lamp that's in the background? If there's a link you can recommend I'd really love one for my own studio. Thanks again for such practical and engaging content!
Thanks for your kind comments! I found the little bird lamp on amazon. It's cordless, which is really handy. You can find it here: amzn.to/3HJI87Z
Mine did this until I had a stroke and lost my right frontal lobe of my brain. Now I can’t see pictures in my mind at all. I bring info in through emotions now, sigh. I miss the pictures terribly.
Do you like green peas? 🫛
HiJoni, I fell I’m getting into a real pickle because I have a very old pair of lamps because they have something unique, they have parchment paper shades that are quite unique but they are starting to disintegrate from age do you have any wonderful suggestions?
I bet you like green beans
Your hair is really getting long
