We can only use DAP or Wurth joint compound with this recipe. if we change the glue to Gorilla Wood Glue instead of Elmers. See this video: • Video
I created the recipe to make my baby animal dolls, but since then people have discovered that's it's great to use as the last layer on a paper mache sculpture. Some people use a layer of paper strips and paste under it, while others use the original paper mache clay and then a thin layer of this recipe to make the sculpture really smooth. I've also used it for portrait masks, a rhino, a raven, and many other projects.

My heart is melting just listening to you talking about mache and making of it :) thank you for sharing the knowledge and being our fairy grandmother :)
Yes, you can paint the dried clay. I use acrylics. You'll want to seal your final work with a good acrylic varnish.
I've been looking all over for recipes for homemade air dry clay and this is the best I've found. I have yet to try it out but you're literally the only person who took the time to make instructions so detailed and easy to follow, while also really knowing what you're doing. In most tutorials I've found people don't know what is the purpose of each ingredient and therefore always just wing the whole thing ;) So, big big thanks to you for taking the time to share the knowledge! Also, since I have yet to try this mix, can you estimate how much shrinkage there is when it dries? Obviously I'm not looking for an exact percentage but it would help a lot to know what to expect as I'm a doll maker and how much a clay shrinks is probably the most critical part of my work. Thank you~!
EratoTiaTuatha I'm glad you like the recipe. I haven't tested the shrinkage, because I like to make my doll heads over a sock filled with rice. Then I use one layer of plaster of Paris bandages, to give myself a solid base, and add a thin layer of the air dry clay over that. The doll heads are very strong and light, and any shrinkage cracks are easy to fix. Since you probably have a very different method, you would want to mix up a small batch and do a scientific-type test. It shouldn't take long to find out if the recipe will work for you. Let us know what you find out in your experiment!
Ultimate Paper Mache I just made the clay (finally! Took me a while ^^;) So far I can tell the recipe is perfect, probably first time making clay that I had everything come out exactly like in the video! I love the texture and it's really nice to sculpt with. I'll be letting you know how much it shrinks once I get some pieces dry, but first I have a question. Do you dry this clay in an oven to speed things up? If so, what time/temperature do you use? I'm a bit afraid how the starch would react to the heat... Again, big thanks for making this availble!
I've tried this recipe, and I didn't get it 100% perfect, BUT it still worked really well and I highly recommend it. Love the video!
Thanks for a wonderful tutorial! you mentioned oil previously, does it slow down the drying?
Hello I do not understand English well and can you tell me what kind of flour you use ?
Hi ma'am I am from India yesterday tried air dry clay recipe with newspaper and tissue papers both clays are amazing 😊 I am sending lots of love from India thanks for this amazing recipe... 🙏
Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying it. 😀
Best teacher ever.. Love from Iran
THIS VIDEO IS SO WONDERFUL and TIMELY!
40 some-odd years ago my little sister sent me a precious piggy bank that she made by using a balloon and paper mache. Fast-forward to a conversation I had earlier this week with one of my granddaughters who I asked to save all of the newspapers she could find so that we could try to make her a piggy bank. Thank you soooooo much! I subscribed!

I don't know how I landed up here, but I loved it. Such a lovely lady. 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Thanks! 😀
Just made my first batch according to this recipe! Didn't have dough hooks for mixer so hand-kneaded in the remaining flour like you suggested, used a dollar store cutting mat for this. Surprisingly easy and the clay looks great! Made some push mold faces & candy mold seashells so far. Took the faces out right away, left the shells in til they dry to see what happens! The faces are PERFECT!
Hint: soak beaters & bowl in a dishpan to be dumped outside. This stuff probably clogs drains nicely lol
I have been looking for an air dry clay recipe. Thank you so much.
Thank you! I'm excited to get my groove designing with clay on!
You seem to be a special lady. I'm grateful for your giving spitrit, graceful ability to teach, and creativity.
Thank you so much Jonni, I really really enjoyed watching you create this dry dried clay, you are really really awesome and amazing too. I really really love ❤️ all the things you make. Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags
Thanks! 😀
Fantastic!!! this new paper clay recipe looks very nice, thanks for sharing. Your work always inspires me, it's beautiful.
Hello Jonni, thank you for the wonderful tutorials! It took me a while to find the written recipes on your blog. For anyone else who is having trouble, you have to click on the video thumbnail & then scroll down to the blog post to read the written recipe.
Thanks, TrumblebeeMom. It was difficult to find the recipes but I just (hopefully) made it easier - go to my blog and click the Art Library link at the top. I recently organized the site so people could find all the projects and recipes. There are almost 500 pages on the site, and a lot of the good stuff was getting lost. So - whenever in doubt, hit the Art Library link! :) www.ultimatepapermache.com/
Ultimate Paper Mache thank you! I just made my first batch of clay; hopefully, I'll get to experiment with it soon.
Jonni you are amazing, beautiful and I just love your amazing masks on the wall. I need to try your new clay formula on my next monsterous creation....
Hey Jonni. Just wanted to say that I'm loving your videos. You've inspired me to try making a sculpture. I'll def post the finished product for you to see. Thank you so much for your videos :)
Great tutorial and clear instructions
Love your work!
Many thanks
Patricia
Thank you so much for those instructions! i havent tried it yet put i find it really nice of you to take the time to get the exact proportions and to provide both cups and grams mesurement :)!!
You're welcome. I hope you have fun with it.
Great! I'm really excited about how well the clay works in molds, but I haven't had time to play with it in molds yet. This is really good to know.
I have never used the stuff to make beads or buttons, but I can't imagine why it wouldn't work. They may not be as hard as you would like, so go ahead and test it and see what happens. The original paper mache clay recipe is harder when it dries, but it's much more difficult to sand.
Thank you for your expertise...I have loved creating art and projects since kindergarten and now since retiring, I'm at young the clock! Thanks for sharing...I am a new subscriber!
Wonderful! I'm glad you're enjoying the videos. 😀
Yes, I use baby oil - the kind that's sold here is just mineral oil with some fragrance added.
I think that it would take a very long time to dry if you didn't use an armature underneath. However, it might be an interesting experiment.
Thanks for providing alternative solutions to those of us who don't have the exact same tools that you do!
Thanking for all your videos as you take time to explain step by step that's best what I like about your recipes and am glad I found your videos and keep watching them to study well untill I start making my own paper mache. Will also love to learn the smooth silky paper mache I keep hearing from you but am not able to get the video yet I guess I didn't search well. 👍🙏
I think the Durham's is epoxy-based (I could be wrong, of course) so it may not work - but it would be worth trying. Weldbond doesn't work in the original recipe, but you're making up a brand new recipe, so be sure to let us know how it turns out.
Oh my gosh Jonni, your animals are stunning!
Thanks! 😀
I love your creations, they are so beautiful to look at. I made some air dry clay last week after following your instructions and it turned out okay, but i did not mix the paper enough so it turned out a little lumpy, but it still worked and i was able to smooth with some water and a spatula. I do wish the clay was waterproof though as i want to experiment with garden features. I am going to cover in a high coat of varnish to see if it will withstand the British weather! Thank you so much again.
Good luck with it. Most varnish is slightly permeable, perhaps to let the wood underneath breathe. It can also crack in the sun, but if you keep it protected it might last awhile. I don't use this recipe for yard art, because none of my waterproofing experiments worked. You can see how my garden gnome is holding up after two winters in Minnesota here: ruclips.net/video/gyqsBl2jBqI/видео.html
Yes, it shrinks. I think the only kind that won't shrink is epoxy clay, but I could be wrong. I have never tried using it to repair anything, I just use it thinly over an armature. Occasionally, hairline cracks happen, but they're easy to repair. It's quite rare, though - did you use all the measurements in the video?
Yes, that's the stuff. Use the pre-mixed kind that comes in a plastic tub, not the dry powder.
Sooooo glad you put the subtitle in saying your cat not mine. I was checking my cats, they were looking at me like I'm mad.
I still do that, even when I know I'm hearing a recording of my own cat. :)
I love your videos. You look like my mom so I feel she's explaining me how to do it. Thanks a lot your recipes are absolutely great and your work is awesome. Really art work. Greetings from Costa Rica
I'm so glad you like the videos! 😀
I love your videos!
I've been working my way through them the last couple days since I discovered your youtube channel.
I swear they're better than any professionally produced craft show I used to watch on cable.
Thanks for sharing all your tips and info and experience.
Looking forward to making my first batch of your clay. (Just need to do a hardware store run first!)
Hi Barbara. I think some of these questions would need some experimentation, and you would be the perfect person to do them. The clay does shrink (anything that contains water will shrink when it dries) but I haven't measured exactly how much. It is not as hard as the original paper mache clay, which makes this new stuff easier to sand, but less strong. I used it for the tongue on my baby puppy dolls, extremely thin, and they're holding up just fine. But if I dropped one? It might break.
If you go to my Channel and look under the Popular Uploads playlist, you'll see the New Paper Mache Clay video. That's the "original" paper mache clay recipe. I don't know if you can use the fast-drying joint compound in either recipe, because I've never tried it. You can give it a go, and see what happens.
Thanks! Going to try it out this weekend 🎉🎉🎉
I don't think they sell joint compound in a tube here in the States, so I'm not sure. Make sure it's for drywall, not pipes. If it's pre-mixed, and it's for drywall, it should work just fine.
You are a great teacher! Thank you!!❤
Ten years later, I just found this! Thank you for doing the gram measurements. You didn't mention it, but cup measures in the USA are smaller than Imperial cup measures. This is why so many recipes don't turn out perfectly for some people. I am in Canada, and have 2 sets of measuring cups & spoons (imperial and USA) and also use metric most of the time, as we are a "metric" country. It can get a bit confusing, as we need to be sure to know which systems we are using if we want 100% accuracy. Metric is universally the same, so that is the best measuring system to use when accuracy is important. My grandson, soon to be 8 years old, wants sculpting clay! He uses FIMO I think it is called, and makes beautiful and imaginative items with it, but is expensive. Your recipe is will work well for him at a price this granny can afford.
❤❤
Thank-you Jonni...your tutorials are the best I've seen. You have thought of everything..most helpful. Your work is incredible 💜
Hello I do not understand English well and can you tell me what kind of flour you use?
Thank you🌷💖😍you are so kind🌹🌸🥰
Lately, some people have reported that Dap works just fine now. They may have changed their formula again. Go ahead and try it, and see if it works. The glue and joint compound combine to create an extremely strong mix - it's essentially a polymer (liquid plastic) glue with calcium carbonate added from the joint compound. I have never seen any other home-made mixture that creates a product as strong as the glue-joint compound combo.
Oh my!! This is fab! Its just like an inedible gumpaste lol Love your channel. Love from Scotland lXl
Thanks so much! 😊
So Brilliant Jonnie, I can learn from this in the future when I'm doing my own paper mache projects.
Have fun!
Nice tutorial totally helpful tks grandma
Thank you so much for sharing. Your work is amazing.
You're welcome 😄
Do you mean you don't have any joint compound on hand, or do you mean you don't know what it's called in your country? If that's the problem, you might find out if you do a search on my blog for "what is joint compound called." A lot of people have written in from all over the world.
As far as I know, there is no substitute for joint compound in this recipe. There are lots of other recipes for paper mache and air-dry clay, but this particular recipe needs the joint compound.
thank you so much,,,,this is exactly what i neeede to invent what i need. i need a mold and this was just perfect :)
thanks you!!!
You are very talented. I was wondering if you've ever used expanding foam (the stuff in a can) to flesh out any projects and if you could PM over it once its fully dry either paper strips or the clay. In place of using a lot of the crumbled up paper.
Thank you so much for sharing your talents.. I think you've inspired me..
You are so welcome!
Jonni, thanks so much for making this video. I finally bought a kitchen scale and made a batch using the correct grams. I am so pleased with the result. My other attempts using the cup measurements worked, but not this well. You are awesome!
I'm glad it helped!
love your work its awesome....you have an incredible talent :)
can't wait to see more of your creations :)
I absolutely love this! Thank you for sharing ❤️❤️❤️
I am totally transfixed by your clay! I am making at the moment fairy houses for my garden with shop bought air dry clay and was wondering if your clay is frost proof ? Thank you for these videos I have subscribed to your channel and I think I am going to be a big fan from this morning when I discovered you!
I just now made an updated video about the air dry clay. You might want to watch it, too. ruclips.net/video/YOiovGN-yHA/видео.html
I don't know if the air dry clay is frost proof, and I can't find out because it isn't waterproof. If I left it outside for a Minnesota winter, it would be a puddle of goo in the spring. Did you find a waterproof air dry clay for your fair houses? If you did, I'd love to know about it.
You're so sweet. Thank you for these videos!
You are so welcome!
I just made this and it looks fabulous! Your directions were perfect! Thanks so much =)
You're welcome!
I don't know if it's been mentioned, but they make mixing paddles for hand drills. The higher torque motor of a drill vs a kitchen mixer might be more up to the task of mixing the clay. The paddles start at about $3.50, but like any mixer, there are different shapes for different jobs.
Great idea. I do use the paddle when I need to make a larger batch. If you double or triple the recipe you could wear out a kitchen mixer's motor, but a drill can usually handle it. Thanks for mentioning it! 😀
It is all new to me. Want to start with small projects. Can I use it to make Beads, buttons? Thank you. Am learning from your video channel and blog. You are a wonderful teacher and artist. Enjo watching and learning.
Hello. Love you sharing this receipe. I used the other version of cold porcelain receipe ie without the paper towel. And i made small baskets using that receipe. Sometimes it turns out fine but most of the time, the baskets cracked so terribly upon drying that i had to throw them away. It was so disheartening. So i stopped making the baskets. The receipe is good for making flowers thou. I am so happy to tumble into yr utube and i am now very interrested to try yr receipe and try to make a basket that will not crack upon drying. I cannot wait to try yr receipe. Thank you from malaysia
Good luck with it. It's hard to make a water-based recipe that doesn't crack, but the paper in this recipe does help.
About 2 1/2 cups.
Such a lovely video! Tyfs.
You are so welcome! 😄
I love your videos! You are so talented! I was wondering, if the toilet paper weighs 24 grams before adding water and weighs 110 grams after adding water, would it be okay to just measure out the 24 grams of t.p. And add 86 grams (110 minus 24) of water to it? That way you wouldn’t have to waste any time and effort squeezing and weighing? And do these weights apply to your original clay recipe as well? Thank you, Jonni!
It might work - it depends on whether or not the fibers in the paper come apart. We do have a paper mache clay recipe with gram measurements now - you can find it here: ruclips.net/video/A_yqGqT-Ua0/видео.html
I have not used the expanding foam (yet!) but it should work just fine.
Thank you. Excellent tutorial.

Hello. Thank you so mutch for the videos. I also ordered your book, and it arrived a few days ago, I'm already making an owl mask for my ten year old daughter who is collecting owls. I am using your recipe, and found out that the joint compound that you are using called shpachtel in Israel, or all filler. It comes like a powder and you have to mix it 1/3 water, 2/3 filler. I'm also working on a bigger project, hope to finish soon and show them to you. U R a wonderful teacher and inspiration.
Hi Melinda. I hope you'll come to my blog and show off your owl mask when it's finished. I'd love to see it.
Do you have any idea if that’s “white cement” in Arabic? Or just wall putty in powder form?
Thanks for great tips and good energy. Is there any video where we can see how hard is dry sculpture?
I don't know how I'd show that, but the dry air dry clay is very hard. It feels like fired clay, but of course it isn't waterproof.
@@UltimatePaperMache thank you very much. I guess I can make epoxy glaze after dry?
@@serator24 Maybe - I haven't tried it, but it should work.
@@UltimatePaperMache thanx
Acho vc MARAVILHOSA,genial!Muito divertida também. Parabéns!!
I hope to try this soon!
Thanks so much for this, Jonni! You are so helpful. How do you store the air-dry clay - the same ways as the classic in the fridge it's ok up to 5 days, then freezer? Also, I want to make something that looks like a crystal ball - any thoughts on materials?
I love ur videos ... And their so easy to follow :)
Thank you so much for the explenation,i will try this! Grt from Belgium👍😀
If making something out of this clay, can it be outside if you seal it?
Jonni, is it possible to extend the drying time for the silky-smooth clay? I have a project idea that needs at least two days for detailing the clay, so, I need it to stay very pliable. Thanks for all of your incredibly awesome videos!
Hi James. Yes, you can keep it covered with plastic wrap when you aren't working on it, and spritz it with water when it's uncovered. That should help. Good luck with it.
Thinking of trying acid free tissue paper from Amazon and use an acrylic medium to see if I can make an acid free paper paste I’ll soak and chop the tissue paper to small bits.
Sounds interesting - let us know how it works. 😊
@@UltimatePaperMache apparently the mod podge blue bottle is acid free. I could try it instead of the Elmer’s worh the tissue. Gotta figure it out. Amazon sells acid free white tissue paper
Great video thanks for taking the time!
You're welcome. I hope you enjoy the air dry clay. Show off your work on my website, too.
Would it not make sense to spray the toilet paper with water until you have 110g? Rather then trying to remove the water?
Hi, how long will this clay last in the refrigerator?
I love your videos... I commented before on one of your videos. Am a big craft buff. Wondering if this recipe would work to make pinatas? You mentioned you were going to post or print recipe. I not sure if I missed it but I didn't see it. Would appreciate the recipe. Or if you have another video with the recipe for paper air dry clay.
Hi Joann. The link is on the first line in the description. RUclips has been making it harder to see the text in the description - maybe they don't want us to see the links because they want us to stay here and watch more videos. You can find the recipe here: www.ultimatepapermache.com/new-air-dry-clay-recipe
I don't recommend using this recipe, or the original paper mache clay recipe, for pinatas. They dry too hard. Great for permanent sculptures, but not for something you want to break on purpose. 😊
Thanks very much for this secret. Ma is this clay good for making jewelry?
I haven't tried it. I know some people do use it for jewelry, though. The only thing I would suggest is that you be sure to seal the finished jewelry to keep it from absorbing oil from your skin. This person has a version of paper mache clay that she uses for jewelry: ruclips.net/video/CjJssX3XWy0/видео.htmlsi=fqdjPCPh3S5Niwub
Thank you thank you thank you!!! I tried making paper mache clay using a different recipe, but I'm not at all pleased with the results. I'm going to try this asap.
I hope you like it.
Hello I do not understand English well and can you tell me what kind of flour you use?
The joint compound is not plaster. If you don't want to use joint compound, do a google search for "paper pulp" mache. There are a lot of paper pulp recipes, but this recipe doesn't work at all without the joint compound.
Great tutorial. I just wanted to add a comment.
Many folks use paper mache for Halloween props, and one common problem for them is that, during storage, mice, rats, raccoon, squirrel and other rodents will eat their props (probably due to the flour content). An easy preventative measure against this is to add some ground cayenne pepper to your paper mache mix while you're making it. Rodents can't stand the taste and will avoid it at all costs.
Great idea! I've never heard that one before, but it sounds like it would work exactly as you describe. Thanks for letting us know.
But wouldn't the presence of the joint/drywall compound make it less attractive to rodents? Also could it be made more solid by increasing the amount of the joint compound or what about including some plaster in the mix? The rodent thing does worry me because when I did some paper mache about 15 years ago some of them did become a meal to mice when there was a brief mice issue.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. Mine came out too sticky. Curious do you know what I did wrong?
You probably just need to add more corn starch or flour to soak up some of the water. Next time, squeeze more water out of the TP before you add the other ingredients.
Should you first put strips of paper mache over the armature before adding the paper clay or is it okay to put it directly over the paper / masking tape armature?
It can go directly over the armature, but you may need to brush on some glue to get this recipe to stick to it.
@@UltimatePaperMache Oh, Jonni…you don’t know how much I appreciate how quickly your reply was! My class is tomorrow morning so I was feeling a little anxious. I didn’t think to check to see if the clay needed to be applied to a certain type of substrate before applying it. Thank you SO much!
Excelent Recipe!
I'm glad you like it
wonderfully explained video. but can u just let me know how long can the clay be stored in a ziplock bag before using??
Param Krishna If you keep it in a very cool place, you can keep it for three or four days before yeast or mold finds it. But it's best to make up just enough that can be used in a day or two. Or, you can freeze it, and it will last almost indefinitely.

Would sealing the clay into a plastic air-tight package prevent it from drying out?
Yes, that helps. It also helps to put it in the fridge.
Thank you
Hi Jonni, thank you for your videos, I love how you explain it all in detail. Not many do, they skip through so fast. Anyway I thought I had bought the right joint compound, but when I opened the bucket it was wet not powder. Read the label and it’s pre mixed, so that wouldn’t be the same would it? Thanks in advance
Hi Donna. If the tub is filled with wet joint compound, you have the kind you need. The dried powdered form of joint compound contains plaster, and it could cause the paper mache to get hard right in the bowl. It sounds like you have the right stuff. Have fun! :)
Ultimate Paper Mache Thank you so much, appreciate your reply🙏🌹
I am planning on covering a mold that is very large with the clay. Will the clay detach from the mold easily or will I need to put something like Vaseline on it? Also how heavy is it and how durable? If I make something very large will it break easily or weight a lot? Thank you! Love the video!!!
Unless your mold is made of silicone, you'll need a release. Both the glue and the drywall joint compound are supposed to stick to things. The weight will depend on how thickly you apply it. I haven't done any scientific tests, and the largest thing I've made with it is my rhino, which is about three feet long. It's held up for about four years now, and it isn't terribly heavy. To make sure it was strong enough, I covered my clay form with plaster cloth, and then covered that with the clay. Watch this video to see how it was done: ruclips.net/video/qsh6G0IJ55I/видео.html
Can I come and play? Love your videos and projects.
Once stored in an air tight container can it be kept in the frig and how long?
It should last a week or so.
How much of the other ingrients do you use? Also could use Plaster of Paris instead of joint compound
You can find all the ingredients and measurements here: www.ultimatepapermache.com/new-air-dry-clay-recipe
I don't know if plaster will work - it could make the clay harden in the bowl before you get a chance to use it.
merci beaucoup vous etes tres gentille
Sabah Benkaddour si vous avez besoin dautres translation laissez moi savoir. Cetait in plaisir. Bisou
hi jonni!!! Thanks for the amazing recipe! Can you sand it down and carve it out when dry? I'd like to try it in my doll making. ❤❤
Yes, it sands very nicely.
Hi can I add acrylic paint or powder pigments to make it more white or any other colours.
Any pigments you add will be lightened a lot by the calcium in the joint compound. But you might be able to use colorants made for concrete countertops to get deeper colors.
@@UltimatePaperMache thanks
can you leave out the glue and flour and just use the compound and paper?
You could try that, but the joint compound has no structural strength at all. I don't think it would work, but I could be wrong. Try both ways, and see which one you prefer.
9 years after this video was posted I still love your videos and go back to them every time
Nine years! Goodness, I had no idea it had been that long. Time goes by fast, doesn't it? 😊
I like this recipe!! But the drywall joint that I have, has resin. Should I use it anyways? :(
I have never used that product, so I can't tell you if it will work. I'm afraid the only way to know is to try it. If you already have some on hand, try mixing a small amount with an equal amount of PVA glue, and see what happens. If it just gets a little runnier, it should work just fine. If it clumps up and gets rubbery, it won't work.
@@UltimatePaperMache It worked amazing!! But I was scared, actually, I am scared that it hurts my hands, cause I think resin is toxic :( I don't really know if it is toxic but that's what I red on internet (sorry for bad english)
It really turned out amazing!! First it was steaky, but then I added more corn starch and magic happened
@@nomi3912 I'm glad it worked. If it is toxic, or if you're supposed to wear gloves or a mask, it should say on the label.
Interesting. I want to recycle paper. So I will do a combination of techniques since going to buy toilet paper to make paper mache in my case is not justified. It's just a hobby. I love your works. They are special!
Hi I was wondering if you could use Linseed oil instead of mineral oil, and if perhaps adding a small amount of bleach might help prevent the mold issue if the clay is stored for more than a few days?
Yes, to both of your questions. ;)
Brilliant, thanks for the quick response, it's much appreciated. Any recommendation on how much bleach to use?
I never use more than a teaspoon.
