Kind of disgusted by the questions to Carlos near the end. Why is the first question to a guy who just lost his brother to a tragic accident "When you talked to him on Sunday, did you think that was going to be the last time you would ever see him?" What kind of stupid question is that? It didn't further anything and just upset the interviewee. Then we hear what he said second hand from the reporters? Wtf?

Agreed! Several of the reporters showed an appalling lack of humanity with the questions and topics they chose to cover. Also asking "What should we take away from the fact that those presumed dead were immigrants?" What???? What is that even supposed to mean? Truly unbelievable. I hope the script writers and interviewers receive the backlash they deserve for this, because honestly they should be fired.

I Retired at the end of 2022 after 50 years working at almost every port facility in Baltimore, When the Key Bridge was built in the mid 70's ships were nowhere near the size they are now. Ships with automobiles were still bulk carriers using ships gear to lift cars out of the holds one at a time and place them dockside to be driven away. I was there! Containers were new and pure container ships were not yet in service. Ships now are many times the size they were then.
Put large dolphins like Tampa FL and use safety tugs. This should of never happened!
The channel Professor Nez covers this in detail, you may want to watch it. Still I just cant understand why the ship wasn’t positioned more to the center. It just seem logical to allow the most possible space to clear. It looks very sloppy to me that it was way off to the side.
It still should have been retrofitted to prevent a repeat of the 1980 Skyway Bridge collapse in Florida. It's almost like 40 years of Reaganomics that cut taxes to the rich and overspent on things like the military while underfunding infrastructure maintenance and upgrades (among other things) caught up with us. I blame Reagan for beginning our decline in so many areas but I blame 99% of all politicians since for taking advantage 9f the situation and not being motivated to fix it.

I hate to say it but I think we should keep an open mind. I heard an experienced maritimer explain that the pilot could have reversed engine and depending on the rotation of the propeller reversing the engine could have exasperated the situation. I hope it’s not the case but I could see this being the case possibly.
@@michaelmeredith912 the engine was off. The black smoke you saw was the generator firing up for the APU after the main engine failed. At that point, there’s no steering the vessel.
God bless the workers who died in this tragedy and prayers for their families and children. I hope they can be found before work begins so that their loved ones can find closure. 😢

They should pay those families, the ship had a history of mechanical issues it is reported. These families will be grief stricken and unable to function, they will need help.

Nobody is ignoring this question. The legal proceedings will be long and fraught with difficulty, without a doubt, but they _haven't even begun yet._ This isn't an episode of _Hawaii Five-0_ in which all questions are answered in an hour, you know.
At least one country other than the US is involved, namely Singapore, where the company that owns the _Dali_ and the company that manages her are both headquartered. Whether Maersk (Denmark), the company that charters her or Hyundai Heavy Industries (South Korea), the shipbuilder will figure in the proceedings I don't know. It will not end soon - and I doubt that it will even begin for a while.
How can a lawsuit be brought forth before full investigation is finished…? The Singapore company will, as the US will, need a reason and proof to show in court.
I’m so sorry to all the families who lost loved ones. I appreciate all the hard work that they were doing and I know that they were good people. My heart breaks for the man who lost his brother and now has the grim task of telling his niece that her daddy has passed away. I’m sending love and prayers. Please know that we will never forget them.

@@user-go8vi5lb6u the bridge is not the problem, the security around it. Most bridges have something called Dolphins which ensures that if something like this happens it never gets to the bridge.
Youll be surprised how often ships hit the dolphins due to current etc... its very common

In the sped-up footage of the incident, you can see that the ship's stern swung round rather sharply to port before it struck the bridge. What kind of manoeuvre was that? The ship had lost power; so what was going on?

I also cannot swim so I couldn’t even imagine going through such a traumatic & horrifying experience. I seriously hope the remaining survivor gets counseling. He’s definitely gonna need it 🕊️🙏🏾🕊️
It’s likely all those guys were required to wear life vests along with their usual PPE, but still a miracle he survived.
I wonder if there was a communication gap in that authorities got traffic stopped but failed to evacuate the repair crew. My sincere condolences to the families of those lost.

They do. They have green and red lights. They used them and that’s why more cars didn’t fall.

Great report from Camilo on the immigrant workers to the US, their contribution to the US infrastructure and economy and the often perilous working conditions they are subjected to putting their lives at risk. That Ship had several things against it .
Huge , takes awhile to stop
Current, going down river a boat will need extra power to get a response.
Timing , the Blackout happened as they applied power to head at opening. As it lost power , it turned slowly and hit piling dead on.
Had they put full Forward, it may have steered enough to scrape one side but a ship follows the bow.
Tugs would not have done much more than make bubbles.
Line up some barges to guide through the new bridge , make a park on each one for each person lost .
It should have been mandatory that tugs assist a ship that size out away from eny thing it can hit or have local pilot on board 🙏 prayers for victims the pilots and crew god bless that simi truck driver and 2 or 3 car that made it past seconds before that tragic accident

They did have US pilot who couldn’t steer a boat that has lost power.
Tugs position it in the channel. The usually leave after that. 99% of the time ships don't lose power. 100s of ships pass under bridges every day

One suggestion I would make for all bridges that have large boats traveling beneath them is to put red lights on the bridges and enable them to flash and sound alarms so that if there are people on the bridge and a mayday is called, these two things can be universal language to any one that happens to be on a bridge to vacate it immediately. This would at least give them a fighting chance. 🕊️🙏🏻💔
Prayers are with these families and with the clean up crews who will be putting their lives on the line to clear the port and bring these fallen men back home to their families as well as make it back home safely to theirs.

What would lights do when the ship lost steering? If you can't steer the ship it's going to hit, lights or no lights. Lights would have done NOTHING in this case.

@@sharleneblock4888 the workers were already on the bridge and not driving across it as others were. When the mayday was called, a traffic light stopped more from getting onto the bridge allowing the traffic that was already on it to clear it except for these workers who were working. If there had also been lights and alarms on the bridge that sounded when The mayday was called (or when they stopped other traffic) then just as the traffic light prevented others from driving onto the bridge these things would have alerted the workers and anyone else who hadn’t cleared it to get off of it now & at least give them a better chance of survival. These poor guys didn’t know what hit them. They never saw it coming because they were on the bridge already when the traffic lights stopped other traffic and had no way of knowing there had even been a mayday called. This is also why at first they weren’t certain that everyone had cleared the bridge before it fell- anyone could’ve slowed down or come to a stop for whatever reason while crossing the bridge (as there were some on the bridge driving over it that had no idea others were stopped from entering it because they had entered it before the lights came on that stopped others). And No, if it was deliberate and no mayday sounded, then none of these things will help. But if there is one sounded as it was in this case then alarms and flashing lights on the bridge too in addition to traffic lights will absolutely help clear a bridge better than just a traffic light before you enter the bridge.

My heart goes to the victims of this tragedy, but wouldn't it be amazing if they gave this long, detailed type of coverage to school shooting survivors, the families of the victims, etc.? A bridge accident kills 6, and I get to know them, their families, and friends. Someone massacres 17 students, or how ever many, and it's just a few hours of thoughts and prayers and on to the next. What would happen if we had those shootings covered like this?

Reports coming out of the Port that the ship had massive electrical issues and was losing power 2 days before the accident.
If the final investigation concludes that the power loss is a pure accident that can’t be anticipated or foreseen rather than any human errors, intentional negligence or malice, then the Captain of the ship is a hero, and he must be recognized. He saved more than hundreds of lives. It’s about how you confront challenges in adversity. The captain did his best to minimize casualties.
A pure accident is the bird's flying into the plane that landed on the Hudson. The failure of one or several key components leading to total loss of control is either flawed design or lack of proper inspection/ maintenance.

@@geelangfordo3272 I completely agree with you. Any design flaws or failures in maintenance is human error and is something that can be prevented, avoided, and remedied. Those are very different from a pure accident like a bird strike, as you said.
@@simondeng4724 Proper inspection and timely replacing of worn parts its vital to countering wear and tear. The shipping industry makes a fortune putting these giant vessels out to sea it's their job and the job of government overseers to make sure they are safe and in good working order.

That mayday mayday call gave us just enough time (2 minutes) to close the bridge before the accident. We should thank God for that .

Yes I had a foreign car. Don't come for me. But I remember when my 1986 Toyota Celica GTS, docked in Baltimore from Japan. That car lasted me 12 years and I never had to replace the brakes. Try that now with 156,000 miles.

I’ve crossed that bridge many times and this is my worst nightmare to be on a bridge when it collapsed, it’s terrifying.
Immigration should be set aside because these were humans.. hard working people who have now perished leaving loved ones behind.

It's a numbers thing. Any massive ship will have a certain amount of hazardous material. This ship carried an _enormous_ amount of cargo.

Doesn't make sense that the vessel would have been Traveling that closely To the structures to begin with. Doesn't track That all vehicle traffic was able to be stopped in a timely manner. This story is sincerely weird. It feels like an old school video game where you're asking us just to not notice the parts that don't match or aren't there or we can't go.
The ship _has_ to go under the bridge to get to the ocean.
Why does it not track that all vehicle traffic was stopped quickly? There's a Port Transit Authority Building right next to the bridge, and Port Transit police units are stationed at either end of the bridge. Once dispatch relayed the situation, all they had to do was pull across the lanes with lights and sirens on. There are also multiple large electronic billboard signs that can display messages such as 'BRIDGE CLOSED' to drivers.
Why not just look at a map of the area and try to understand?

This accident could had been avoided had the US authorities had installed concrete barriers in front of the bridge's foundations to prevent ships from hitting it, like they do today when they build a new bridge.
not really considering that the ship had cargo that was outbound combined with 1.5 million gallons of fuel for the cross ocean voyage as a result the bridge support was done for either way
@@KILLKING110definitely not. Those bridge pylon barriers are struck by ships all the time and the supports are perfectly fine.
That cargo ship is almost the size of an AIRCRAFT CARRIER. The bridge supports couldn't stop or deflect a direct hit from that much mass. Fenders, rock walls, or other protection simply wouldn't have been able to prevent this disaster. What could help? Tug boats guiding ships completely outside the port and bridge area.
No. Several experts have said that that massive amount of force would have destroyed any bridge
while may help a 95,0000-ton ship moving at 8 knots does take a lot to stop.
I can't but help think that if there wasn't anything at all that could have been done to warn those poor construction workers that they had to get off the bridge and at least give them a fighting chance.

How did the workers on the bridge not see/hear the ship heading for the bridge and scramble the hell off ????...And, why are we not seeing the footage from on the bridge of the collision??
They could probably not hear the ship approaching. Simply seeing it in your periphery and not expecting it to be anything out of the ordinary unless the ship was sounding its horns would give them no clue. If they ever found out before the impact it was probably much less than the two-three minute warning the captain managed to send out. It might have been that they realized it just before impact or not even at all.
In such a short time frame, and not having direct phone access to the crew on the bridge there was simply not enough time.
I was witness to a near collision almost thirty years ago where a large (but not huge) ship was towed away for scrapping and the tugboat was going way too fast and when corrected for the bridge the ship in tow swung out and headed for the one of the bridge columns, which were also unprotected.
I saw it about 500 m out and we were a large group of people sunbathing on a floating dock. The tug went from side to side trying to save the bridge, the tow line snapped off and flew onto shore - it would have killed anyone in the path but luckily there was no foot path at that particual part of the shore line so the tow line crashed into the woods.
We watched in disbelief as the ship, no longer under tow and not having working engines, was heading towards a support column of Västerbron, the largest bridge in Stockholm, Sweden. The tugboat ended up ramming the ship two or three times to get it onto the shore line, just 150 to 200 m from where we all had been (we evacuated way before that though).
I am not sure if the collision would have taken out the bridge (Västerbron) but at that speed and that mass/momentum there would be structural damage for sure and a costly repair and the bridge would probably have to be shut down during assessment and repairs.
Seeing that I absolutely can understand that there was practically nothing that they could do under those circumstances; a MUCH larger ship with no tow and engines/electrical failure.
That momentum is nothing you can do much about.
They were working 0.6 miles from the nearest land end of the span.
They're doing an amazing job of hiding the navigating captain of that ship. I haven't saw a picture or a video of him being rescued from the ship yet.
They're all still on the ship I believe. The fault will fall on Baltimore's 2 pilots that were on the boat but probably not much anyone could do if they lost power and couldn't steer..
That is because the Captain is still on the ship, with the crew and the NTSB investigation team.
The pilots were navigating at the time of the accident. Why are you entitled to information about the captain?
That captain is the one person ultimately responsible for the ship being, as they say, in all regards ready for sea. Both him and the ships management have blood on their hands

Just goes to show how vulnerable and delicate that type of expansion bridge really is. I guess when rebuilding it the anchorage points will have to be very well protected against impact since being so far apart to let all that traffic through.

BUT how would the workers have figured it was an alarm about an impending hit instead of merely an emergency type alarm for the benefit of all those aboard the ship???

They said port authority next to bridge only had two minutes notice. No way contact workers on bridge in two minutes unfortunately.

Ship power went out twice. First time power went out, backup power kicked in. And there was an attempt to restart engine. Second time power went out, backup power failed. Camera on the ship probably failed when backup power failed to kick in after the second power outage.
because the bridge collapsed, and the cameras were on the bridge. the cameras lost power almost immediately after impact, and the last couple seconds of footage was likely corrupted.

Time factor was against the poor guys on the bridge.
Don't blame the first responders. From what I heard at least one of them was going to drive onto the bridge AFTER they had stopped traffic. He did not make it onto the bridge before it collapsed and if he had made it onto the bridge he would most likely also be dead now.
Limited resources on the scene that were with just a few minutes to act rushing to shut down traffic - at both ends - coming in from wherever they happened to be. It is not like they were actually sitting at either end of the bridge waiting for a call!
It was a small miracle they even had time to stop incoming traffic. Everyone already on the bridge was at the mercy of time and judging by the videos at least two or three vehicles narrowly escaped. Those guys must feel incredibly lucky and probably shocked too!
Time two to three minutes on your clock and think it through:
You get the call, you have NO idea of who or how many is on the bridge and you have NO number to call to warn either of them.
All you can do is try to prevent people from going on the bridge who also have NO idea. Two to three minutes is way too short.
How on earth do you think you can call someone, anyone, in the middle of the night, have them drive on to the bridge to the workers - who they probably not even knew were there - inform them and pick them up and go back? It would be a suicide mission, we now that now after the fact.
I feel very sad for the workers.

And cars and trucks shouldn’t run into bridges either but that is a daily occurrence. Look up “11ft 8in” for examples.

So they say the power went out of the boat. I just seen a video as the boat was going towards the bridge. The power was still on. The boat still had lights on when the boat got near the bridge. The lights went out. They came back on.

I had to stop watching for 10 minutes when they identified the men. My heart aches for the families of those who had their lives so viciously taken away from them.
The crew thought that the bridge had the assumed two pillars and the ship went through the middle of an assumed opening and didn't think there was a pillar there. The bridge was not illuminated. Sheer panic went through the crew of Titanic proportions. Striking the pillar like that, a bridge cannot survive the collision. It's tragic and sad to hear. Praying for the victims.

The ship had a local pilot on board who would know the area very well, so no... they didn't just misunderstand where the channel was.
I don't believe that's true, from what it sounds like they were having mechanical issues and weren't able to get stuff together in time, hence you saw the black out. This is a MASSIVE cargo ship, people be thinking they everything runs smoothly and they can immediately take action whenever something goes wrong.

Maybe because they are not looking for their loved ones. They are claiming it is a dangerous weather hazard. It rained one day and was not cold. Divers are told not to go looking at the Titanic but every year divers are trying to look after a ship with no survivors. But divers cant put the same effort in for this. This has to do with these workers being a minority and that's wrong.

But in 1980, did they have ships with displacements of 148,984 metric tons (the ship's weight empty)? That was a hefty mass that crashed into the Key Bridge, heftier than that ship in 1980, I'll bet. The _Dali_ would have had its load adding to the mass, too.
One obvious safety festure for the rebuild are collision arrestors or deflectors that shield the columns from being hit by blocking or deflecting away colliding ships.

Her mother doesn't know what to tell her. What _do_ you tell a child when you just don't know what has become of her father? You can't just tell her that he's probably dead. Once her father's status has been ascertained, she can be told about it - but his status is unknown just now.
