We cannot know if he heard the officer say "sheriff's department", but he did answer the door slowly with the gun pointed at the floor. He never pointed it at anyone.

I was recently boasting about how safe flying has become, because of tragic lessons learned from previous crashes. The NTSB recommended countless mandatory improvements. The 70's and 80's saw the peak of plane crashes. I like to watch Mentor Pilot, 74 gear with Kelsey Hughes, and others May Day episodes. I'm always saying how much safer flying has become. Now it's seriously changing.

By what stretch of the imagination did he think it was OK to open the door with a gun in his hand when the officer had announced themselves to be an officer of the law? His action forced the officer to make a split second decision. And it doesn't mater where the Airman was aiming it because it only takes a fraction of a second to lift that firearm up and squeeze off a round.

This video cuts out the first time the officer knocked. He did not identify himself. He walked out of the field of view and did not respond to the homeowner repeatedly asking, "who is it?" That's when the homeowner went to the back room to get his gun. We cannot know if he heard the officer say "sheriff's department", but he did answer the door slowly with the gun pointed at the floor. He never pointed it at anyone.
