Chris, mille mercis.

      The more I think about this, the more I think Steinberg should REALLY be pushing this. Most people say, "Want to record using your plugins? Buy an Apollo interface and the UAD plugins". I have a new Steinberg UR816C interface that comes with Yamaha DSP plugins designed to be used during recording. They are good and all but I'd rather use one of my Neve 1073 type preamp plugins or API or, etc. Just record on the input channel and you're all set.

    I’ve always done it this way too: lanes and versions. But I’ve realized it sets me up for a ton of tedious editing. These days I’m trying Nuendo’s “replace” mode, which is how we did it in the old days without DAWs-you record, and if you don’t like it, you record over the top, lose everything, until you get it right. No editing! And become a better musician.

    This is great! Working throughout trandport controls would be helpful. For example, you grab the range and select it, but it seems that process is somewhat tricky. Maybe you have key commands for that. But I don't know how to set that up. Grabbing an event and moving it either along the timeline horizontally or vertically through the arrangement would be really helpful. I am still making my way through the Cubase course and I am finding it very helpful. Thank you!

    Chris, great video as always! Regarding placing plugins (committing) on the input channel, is the main advantage just saving cumulative processing power for large projects with the disadvantage being no way to edit/reverse them, so for simple/small projects it's presumably best to place plugins after the input channel?

    • @mixdownonline
      @mixdownonline  3 года назад +2

      It's more of a workflow and personal thing. The good side of committing whether you're using hardware or plugins, is too get the best recording at the source so that means, less work when mixing but that also means that there's no turning back ;-) You need to know what you're doing when doing so imo

    Nice tips Chris! I use the folder very often. I record drums a lot (group editing enabled) but i have to open all the individual track lanes in order to comp the takes. If i don't open every track it is only comping the one highlighted. It quickly gets messy when i have 20 tracks of drums. Have you experienced this bug?

    • @ronbates5401
      @ronbates5401 3 года назад +2

      Hey Catalin! I'm not Chris, but this is what I've found. Selecting takes with group editing enabled should change them. However, swipe comping only changes the selected track. If you want to edit all at once you have to cut the region you want to replace and then select the correct take with the comp tool.That should update all tracks. If you want to swipe comp, all lanes have to be open. Hope this helps! Also, if you have group editing enabled and try to select a lane with the selection tool, all lanes start to open, so make sure you do all your comp editing with the comp tool so you don't accidentally open multiple lanes.

      Hey Ron, you seem to know your Cubase pretty well :) You are 100% correct on this. I actually demonstrate this in my Editing in Cubase course. I don't know why Swipe Comping works only on the selected track, doesn't make any sense, but that's the way it is for now. Thanks Ron!

    Why will you ever want to use inserts on an input track? Wouldn't you always want a clean recording so you can manipulate it later on?

    • @mixdownonline
      @mixdownonline  3 года назад

      Most of the time, yes, but It's more of a workflow and personal thing. A lot of well known recording engineers will record through hardware to get the tone close to what they want to end up with when mixing and to get the best recording possible at the source so that means, less work when mixing but that also means that there's no turning back, so you need to know what you're doing. SO one can do the equivalent using the input inserts in Cubase. Not a must, just a preference. You can also use the Input Inserts for metering plugins like I will demonstrate in next week's video, so stay tuned :)

    How the heck do successful YT people find time and energy to run their RUclips channels in addition to running their businesses and dealing with their families? They must be working like 100 hours a week?

      On my side, I built my business around my YT channel, so that's why I don't work 100h/week and I can spend time with my family :-)
