    My Uncle lies with his bomber crew in Holland. They are remembered, loved and well cared for by the citizens of Dalen. Thank you for remembering and honouring their sacrifice.

      @eroentje94 bless your heart, you, and the townsfolk. I can not express how thankful I am that Uncle Walt and his crew are loved and cared for. Around 20 years ago, l saw photographs of their graves and the ceremony that's held to remember them. Someone was kind enough to show them to me. Thank you for making the offer. His photo is at my office desk at work, l remember him every day, and it's comforting to know there's good people out there like you who also remember them.

      @@exJacktar after having a little think, I think I remember the exact place the bomber crashed but I might be wrong because from the stories I've been told people always said it was a US B24 liberator, but now I'm thinking it's a RAF Lancaster since that should've been commonwealth. Can't expect Dutch farmers to have material recognition, especially back then. I do know it came down at night and usually those were RAF operations.

    • @exJacktar
      @exJacktar Год назад

      @eroentje94 the German who brought down Uncle Walt had 6 victories that night. 3 Lancaster and 3 Halifax. Of the 6, only Walt's Halifax fell near Dalen at 2:45 am. Herbert Lütje was the German Ace. He was awarded the Knight's Cross for this night. It's strange to read about this guy on Wikipedia, see his photo, and read his record. I don't feel animosity towards him. Both were doing their job, and unfortunately, Walt lost in the encounter. In the mid-1980s, the last surviving member of the crew was kind enough to meet my family and tell us some of that night. He said they had magneto problems, which caused the bomber to fall back between the first and second wave of aircraft. This meant the German defences were engaged and made it easier to find them. Walt was #28, so Herbert was already a seasoned veteran and at the top of his game. It was Walt's 6th mission. Fortunes of War.

      @gurka321 absolutely, an old Dutch joke that my grandfather used to tell me, who was a teenager during this time is, there's a sign in Dutch saying no drinking water, the German guy asks what does this mean, and the Dutch guy goes you've gotta take it down with 2 hands 😂😂😂
