My father was among those Canadians who helped liberate the Netherlands, and one year his branch of the Royal Canadian Legion received a gift of tulip bulbs from them, to be given to each of the veterans who had served there. So my dad got about a dozen bulbs, which he divided out to my sister and me, to our great delight.
Do you know which places your father fought in in the Netherlands? My hometown was liberated by Canadians, I'm wondering if he was a part of it.

I read a beautiful (true) story about a woman who was telling this story to her cabbie as she was driven somewhere in Ottawa, and when she told about the single white rose that was given by the princess to each of the other new mothers in hospital at that time, the cabbie started to cry. His mother had died when he was very young, and among the few things he had from her was a dried white rose. And now he knew why.

My dad was part of the liberation force of the Netherlands in WW2. Even in his 80’s he would get thank you letters from from children in Holland - they never forgot

Always remember who gave us freedom! ❤️ Canada the netherlands have a special bond with veterans coming here every year. Canadian grave of fallen ww2 soldiers is taken care of with our heart meaning we have adopted the Graves so we lay flowers and make sure it stays peaceful and clean. We even have Canadian soldiers street names and a school named after a Canadian General. Yes we the netherlands love the Canadians we forever will from generation to the next so it will never be forgotten ♥️ greetings from the netherlands 🇳🇱
I'm a 31yr old Canadian and I only learned within the last 6 months or so about the Dutch practice of adopting Canadian graves. There are really no adequate words...
I suppose the best I can do is to misquote one of my fellow countrymen and thank you for "continuing to hold the torch high" and for "not breaking faith with those who died"

I was born in that hospital as well. The Tulip Festival was always fun, I haven't lived in Ottawa for many years but have fond memories of the big colourful tulip beds all over the parks throughout downtown, especially along the canal.
As a Dutch person, the pronouncuations are hilarious. Good job in trying. I learned a lot of new things through this video, thank you for that!

@@bluflaam777 Well, considering American pronunciations of foreign placenames inspires much mirth, you can have that one. Mind you, having Americans, usually tourists, school locals (Australia in my case, but seen in elsewhere in my travels in the tourism industry) on how to pronounce local words/names is always annoying but becomes amusing after coffee.

You're actually referring to the Canadian monarchy (the Governor General as vice regent in lieu of) and the government of Canada. There is also no such thing as direct rule by the monarch. She/he is simply the head of state, not the head of the government, and as such has very limited powers which can only be used in very specific circumstances. That said, let's not talk about how racist the government of the day actually was, and how it rejected a boat load of refugees, many of whom went on to die in Nazi camps, and treated appallingly indigenous Canadians, Asians, and Blacks. So yeah, treating them like Royalty, while treating many others like sh¡t is a valid criticism.

Forgive me but at the time when this took place was the King of England still considered “owner” as Canada was not yet an independent state as such? Forgive my confusion but I have seen some where that the Queen “owns” about 1/3 of British lands…I am confused as you can see about this sort of thing.
This is one of the best Ottawa history stories, one we are all proud of, and as you said, celebrated each year with the tulip festival. BTW - Holland avenue is 3 blocks from the Civic (which is still located in the same place).

Yes, it's hard to explain. As a Canadian, I have visited the Netherlands a number of times over the years, and I always feel like it's just a bit different for me than visiting other places... the history between our countries makes me feel an extra connection when I am lucky enough to visit the Netherlands.

sadly, though the video, for the most part, is informative...the title MISleads the facts of the video "Canadian Hospital Had to Officially Become Part of the Netherlands" to which the video itself NEVER claims. But states the ACTUAL truth re: a section of the WARD (not the whole hospital) being declared 'extra territorial' (NOT Netherland territory)

I worked for Colyns Nursey in Port Alberni during the 70's on Vancouver Island, B.C. Every Year Parade Day the Tulips and Daffodils was an amazing event, which the large family of children still carry on today. ❤ 🇨🇦.
It's funny. I was at Dow's lake where the statue is located on Saturday after a few bevies (love a post daquiri walk - highly recommend). I've walked past that statue so many times but just thought that it was just a quirky statue. It's good to know that there's an actual reason for the statue.
We have the weird spider statue with eggs in front of the National Art gallery too.

Having experienced winter conditions in both Ottawa and the Netherlands, I can appreciate the comment about the "challenges" the climate would have posed for the Royal Family whilst re-located. I love Ottawa, but my goodness... the winter really would be quite a shock if you were coming from the Netherlands!

Well, as folks from Canada and Mexico are fond of pointing out, the North American continent is more than the U.S.A. So in this instance 'of America' could be referencing North America, not one country.

Just to clarify, no intelligent person believes that North American is only the USA.
Further, in Canada, to refer to a Canadian as an 'American' is considered something of an insult.
Finally, despite what some say, there is no continent of 'America'. The term 'Americas' is barely acceptable given that it is a plural term referring to North America and South America.

Without conventions, none of us would be able to understand each other. Besides, one can pick up a mispronunced word from context, not its own pronunciation.
Not to mention that mangling a French word when you're speaking English is a big no-no in Canada.

Get to walk passed the statue in Apeldoorn regularly. There is also a Canada freedom walk which is an audio tour visiting all the important places and recounting the history of our liberation.

spoiler alert the Civic Hospital maternity ward was not made not Dutch Territory it was declared international territory, reasons being Canada practised jus soli, while the Netherlands follows jus sanguinis. It was sufficient for Canada to disclaim the territory temporarily so baby was born Dutch not Canadian
King George was King of Canada which was separate from his role as King of Great Britain as of the Statute of Westminster in 1932 which made Canada fully independent from Britain. King Charles is King of Canada, Australia, New Zealand et. al. all separately from his role as King of the United Kingdom today. The designation of the hospital as extra-territorial was Canadian not British.
So this should be a Hollywood Movie!
I forgot to add a trivial point, viz. There was no such thing as Canadian citizenship at the time the princess was born, so there was no danger of her becoming one; at that time the Canadian passport read only British subject residing in Canada, as if on a prolonged visit.

The story goes that the boys were roughhousing on the lawn, as children tend to do. The eldest was on the bottom & gasping for breath or some such & the second was screaming & panicking that everybody had to get off of him, because if Willem-Alexander died he had to become king.
I might misremember the details, but the story was something like that.

The German invasion of the Netherlands actually didn't go as planned at all and because of that the Germans flattened a big part of Rotterdam and that forced the Dutch to surrender.

You are incorrect when you say Margaret was the first and only royal to be born in North America. That is definitely not true. Maybe Dutch Royal, possibly European Royal? But King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the King of Thailand from 1946-2016 was born in Massachusetts. Also US law is different than Canada law in that Jus Soli does not apply to foreign diplomats. So that probably could be invoked in a case like Princess Margaret if it happened here in the US.

It’s interesting to note that the line of succession is not male but female(yes I know it’s because Juliana was the heir there being no males to take the throne) but it is still interesting that Juliana’s own daughter is now the Queen…will it continue?

though to be fair to the guys, they were the stadholders during the whole Dutch Republic before that, Prince of Orange.
The odd one out; Lodewijk Napoleon, younger brother of Napoleon, shortly ruled the land before it was folded into the French empire. Louis learnt Dutch, changed his name, stood up against his older brother & seems to have been an all around good egg.

The title I see on this video refers to "America" when it should refer to Canada.
To refer to someone or something as American which is in fact Canada is considered something of an insult in Canada. This is not unlike called someone from New Zealand an Australian or someone from Scotland as English. When it happens in Canada, it quite often does not end well because Canadians really do not want to be confused in any way with Americans.
The editor of this video should really know better.

Holland, Michigan planted 250,000 tulips in 1930 for their first annual tulip festival. Currently, 6 million are used throughout the city. (According to Wikipedia, anyway.) Makes that paltry 100,000 seem like a third rate florist aboot (haha!) to be shut down.

This is inaccurate. They never declared any part of the hospital as part of the Netherlands. That doesn't even matter, the Dutch give citizenship by blood, not location. They just needed to make sure she wasn't Canadian, so they made it international territory, belonging to no nation

This video isn't 100% accurate. No part of Ottawa was declared Dutch territory. It didn't need to be. By Dutch law if your parents are Dutch citizens you are automatically a Dutch citizen regardless of where you are born. The problem was, if born in Canada you are automatically a Canadian citizen. Meaning the princess would hold both Dutch and Canadian citizenship if born on Canadian soil. The princess needed to be Dutch and Dutch alone for line of royal succession. A portion of the maternity ward was simply denationalized until after her birth. Making it the equivelant of international waters belonging to no country. It was then recalimed by Canada after the birth.

America specifically refers to the United States. North America refers to the continent. The Netherlands was liberated not only by Canada but by troops from Poland, the U.K., and the U.S.
In most of the world America refers to the whole continent from the top of Greenland to the tip of Fireland. Allthough i will grant you that (US)English has now taken something from Spanish & uses the term 'the Americas' in that instance.
The Netherlands was indeed liberated by a multitude of different nationalities, there were even Georgians fighting.
But the Canadians were & are the ones that are seen in the Netherlands as "the Liberators".
Not because Dutch people don't know about the others, but there were simply much more of them & they fought in the hardest battles like the Scheldt river & Groningen. They also shared their rations with the starving people. If you want to see something awesome, look up Leo Major.

This Arkansas State Park was named after Queen Wilhelmina although she never visited. I have visited 30 times and always pay my respects to her portrait within the lodge.
