ThatDudeinBlue Looks and sounds great, I've been looking for a Datsun Z for many years. Here is Canada they either want big money for them or if you find one for a descent price it's usually rusted so bad you can puncture right through the frame with a screwdriver.

ThatDudeinBlue it's such a gorgeous car. I have a 1972 240Z that's a work in progress, but even just the few times I've driven it, I knew it was something else. The sound, the smell, the soul of that car is unlike anything else out there. Despite the rust issues, those first gen Z cars are works of art. Also, side note, thanks for talking to me and my friends a little bit and C&O last weekend, it was awesome meeting you.

David, thanks for reviewing such a cool car. I'm glad people are still into these cars.
I had a 1975 280Z from 2002 to 2005. It had similar wheels, suspension upgrades and was a metal flake brown. I had CRX seats and the interior was in great shape. Man, you are making me miss that car. If I didn't live in the East coast rust belt I would get another one. My biggest regret is not buying a clean 240z with a chevy 305 swap about eight years ago. I had a other Z cars, but those first gen body styles are the best. Now I have a Honda S2000 but if i moved out west I think I'd want an old Z like that again with a rebello racing motor!

    • @MrEddied71

I had a 1971 Datsun 240Z with a Rebello racing motor! It was so fast with 230 horses at the rear wheels!!! It got stolen twice in 2 years and finally lost it.

Glad you finally got to drive one of the best sports car ever build . I had a 74 Datsun 260Z (same color, the green part) back in the early 80's when I was stationed out in northern California . I really miss that car. I always said that it was the right car, at the right time, in the right place. Koni shocks, Mullholland springs, FR 60/14 BF Goodrich tires on US slotted mags and a Pacesetter exhaust system. I used to get up early on Sunday mornings just so I could take that car up around Lake Barryessa so I could catch as little traffic as possible. My first four wheel drift was in that car. :)

3:26 couldn't agree more. Rust is the main issue we're running into with the channels 240z. Living in the Midwest with our snow, rust just comes with the package. We've had to change the whole floor board and even the rocker panels because everything was rusted out. But man the Datsuns are a gems.

  • @harrisonlee3250

I used to have two! A 280 then I swapped the engine into a 260 and I converted it to SU carbs. As I was watching I kept getting chills down my spine from that raw sound. I had gotten a 350z after that but I always said that even though it may be faster it doesn't give u the same feeling. A trip to the market felt like a huge journey and as if u went 150 mph when in reality it was only 40 mph. And also the car has huge personality. She sometimes get angry but when it's working perfectly you are that much more grateful. This video made me miss my cars man. Even the smell of a Datsun is different.

Back in 1987, I ran my 260z from St Louis to Martin, Tn (300miles) in 3 hrs and 15 min and stopped, 4 times along the way. It would cruise smoothly at 90mph and felt like 55 mph, but you have to keep wax on it, because they really attract rust.

I helped my mom buy a '77 280z in good mostly original condition last year as her "fun" car as a retirement gift to herself. Initially, she had been considering old VW bugs, but I suggested she look at these old Datsuns due to their sportier nature. And we are both so glad she chose to pick up the Z! It is a gorgeous car and fun to zip around in. My mom tells me all the time about the attention she gets from people of all ages (mostly men) who give her thumbs up at stoplights, holler "nice Z!" as she drives buy, or stop to talk about the car when she's filling up the tank. It's really an amazing thing and I'm glad my mom loves it. She deserves it! Now, if I can just get her to consider an engine swap! ;)

You ever believed in love at first sight? I do. Late 2017 if I remember, I was in the Bay Area “Cali”, and my dad’s friend has a 260z with a 240z front end, & a r32 rb26dett in it. He said it’s on “stock” power. But stock power in a RB is pretty fast for a Datsun. And when I first sat in it, just the feeling is just amazing. The feeling you get when pushing down on the throttle 😍, just something else. And I mean if you see in my pfp, it’s me next to the Z.

I fucking love the old z cars. when I was still working as a mechanic, I had a 260 come in. unfortunately like you said, the entire frame was rusted so bad that I couldn't lift it on a standard 2 post lift without risking it breaking in half, had to put it on a 4 post drive on rack. Needless to say we couldn't do anything to it for liability reasons. that and he wanted his starter changed and it had MASSIVE oil leak issues, but even though it was pretty much dead and rusted out, it looked sexy as fuck.

I actually own a 260Z. A 2+2 though, not a coupe. I can't wait to get it done! I found out I need at least $10k just for parts.. and I don't have a job. So it'll take a while. I'm not sure I want to swap the engine, like you said nothing beats that classic L6-engine sound. I love it. In Norway(where I live) these Z's are quite rare, which means almost everyone stares when I drive by and a lot of older people wants to share their "dream" and saying that this car was their ultimate dream car when they were young. It's starting to become a valuable collectors car, the prices are increasing. I didn't get mine dirt cheap but then again it's in almost mint condition. Just need to replace a few parts and get a paintjob(a few scratches here and there but almost no rust and no blemishes)

The mini truck from Datsun, though not as powerful as a straight 6, I can still have fun with my little 4 cylinder. My plans are reaching high, for the money I have now, but I plan on a wide body, full frame upgrade, and rb20 swapping it. make it a sleeper of sorts.

2 days ago I got my 260Z currently stripping it down to fix all the rust. To my surprise it is still with original floor pans, and get this, they are not rotted away, they got surface rust but that is about it. Oh and theses S30 Datsuns are getting very expensive in Europe, even a project car with rotted floor pans can be sold at about 6500 euros..

thought it was awesome. I love the classic Japanese cars. I'd really love to see you find a built toyota starlet and do a vlog on it. I miss mine and there's not much content out there anymore.. I miss mine dearly. what's not to love about a 1700 lb rwd hatch haha. mine was a stripped out kp61, I had it weighed in at 1580 or so before removing sound deadening. whoever owned the car before my friend I purchased it from cut the springs. beyond that it was stock. besides a Flowmaster and removing the epa restrictions for track days. she ran strong. was a gokart, there's a road out here in cali called GMR. that car ripped that road up. tight twisty canyon. never got to finish her. one of those ones I let get away I regret. love the old school content and would love to some more from all different manufacturers

I bought a 240z project car a few years back, he's not kidding about the rust. Mine looked really straight until I started to dig into it. The majority of these old datsun's will require a full tear down, sand blasting and thousands in rust repair. Searching for a rust free old Z becomes disheartening to say the least.

Love this car / I'm a Z guy and have a 370z. It kills me to see this car sort of "rat rodded" out though. It is a gorgeous car that has a classic coupe design that has aged so well.

And yes I've seen a 260z. Know someone that raced one back in the day.

my dream car. I love the s30 chassis so much. Perfect mix of european like design and Japanese engineering and the L-series is one of the best sounding engines imo. They're pretty hard to find at a decent price here in Canada. A lot of them have rotted to nothing and the ones that survived are all 10k+. I'll own one, one day.

The Datsun Z's are the best.
I have owned an early (3/71) production all original 240 since 1976 and will NEVER sell it.
    I hope to get two more 240's (72 and 73), a 260 (74), a 280 zapp (77) and a 1979 or 1980 280ZX that will all be restomods.

It's not about power, it's different with the Z's, even the 350z and 370z. I love that I'm N/A right now and I'll miss it once I'm boosted (Built a high compression motor with 317whp and have a vortech kit I'll be putting on)
There's just something about being N/A, it's fun, you don't care that you're not the fastest as long as you're having the most fun.

Any first series Z gives you all the charm of the 240.
Hell even the first series ZX can give you the feel with lowering and stiffer springs and remove bumper weight, which you need to do in the 260,280 cars as well.
The fuel injection can be up graded to megasquirt or put a set of 240z carbs and manifolds bolts right on ,or a triple set of side drafts and in your mind ,you have a Ferrari motor, bamm.
Alit of people do swaps ,the original motor is bullet proof and rugged as hell. They never had reliability issues just rust.( Harbour freight ,99$ welder ,20 dollar hand angle grinder,a 30$ sawzall.)
You don't see them much out side of California.Rust yes, can be fixed yes.dont be afraid of rust a 20$ sawzall and a 99$ harbour freight welder ,and you can fix it.
I'm in Florida ,I don't see many on the road at all.But when I watch cars and coffee online, I see some, I never see drive on the road.
    I have a 240 and a 280 I'm restomodding as twins.
    And will be daily drivers.

I owned one circa 1982 . They did rust. I also had a B210 after that. 1977 model in 1984. It was all rust. Surface rust appeared daily.

The engine seems to be missing a bit. But you got the feel of the Z. Wish you would have commented on how comfortable of a driving position it is. There's so much room for such a small car it's amazing. And room for a serious hatchback that you can pack some serious luggage in. So it makes a great weekend getaway vehicle for two.
