the beach goes three wide and hits the half in 51 and just tires two steps before the line what an absoulute monster the beach was

And contrary to the negative narrative, the drive was perfect. Art Official looked to be giving up the lead down the backside, and the Beach would have slingshot by and opened up by 10, as Art Official got backed through the field. Just a fluke that Art Official was drugged up, and was basically push button the whole race. Art Official stopped and started on command, and looked nothing like a normal horse, when looking at his gate and how he carried his speed. If Art Official had quit like he would have without the gas, then the Beach wins by daylight and it is remembered as a dominating performance. The loss actually helped the legacy, in an odd way.

Macdonell forgot to use the whip coming to the tape or he might have won by a nose instead of lost by a nose. Macdonell fell asleep as usual coming to the tape and didn't whip the horse.

Bulldog was parked the entire mile and won by 6 lengths not too long ago and why? Because that took that bum Jody Jamieson off him and put Dexter Dunn on him. I've timed him to run his past half mile in 55.4 seconds... 4-5 wide. The apex on the corner at Gloucester park is surprisingly sharp. The camber is perfect but once you get out in the car-park you either need to be on something very quick or the leaders need to be very tired. The horse that ran 2nd is a G1 winner & had a nice run off the pace.

People who say that SBSW should've gunned to the top just don't know horse racing. The most damaging 1/4 in racing is the first mile if one is gunned out and parked. Very few horses could sustain effort after that. One I could think of was Cam Fella.
So I think Macdonell was trying to get a middling first 1/4 before he gunned to the top but he was what Pierce and Gingras were up to and went for the lead right away.

Why is the European way of racing better than the American?
    1. The drivers in general have a vision of a long career for the horse they drive. The whip is a tool, not a thing they go crazy with in every race to try to take out everything the horse can give.
    2. They use cover when they are racing on the outside (2nd wide) and try to avoid being first on the outside (death position we call it).
    3. If they get packed in on the outside, its likely they can get an opening anyway (especially on a mile track). If the opening doesnt come, they know they have a horse that is ready for a new hard race the next time.
    4. They drive fast the opening 500m, slower the next 1000m, and then faster the last 600m. This gives the horses in the backpack of the field a chance to make a move to the front and take place in the death position/challenge for the lead, and the one that has this position can choose to defend or not defend. This is also a big factor in betting, if you are able to read the tactical aspect of the race. In the US they race almost on full speed the whole race, and there is minimal tactical aspect. This has a negative impact on how willing people are to bet on the races. Which by the way is going to increase if there is more interesting racing. Maybe Jeff Gural is the man, atleast he has a very good vision for US racings future.
But when it comes to Somebeachsomewhere. Undoubtly one of the biggest talent in harness racing of all time. The problem is that when you become a sire after the three year old season, the sport loses a superstar. This is dramatic for the interest of the sport. Horses like Somebeachsomewhere, Muscle Hill, Donato Hanover and Chapter Seven (just to take the last 6-7 years) had potential to bring the sport some big names. Names that are famous outside of the harness racing. If you take a look at some European horses that is common to know the name of in Europe, Sweden has a couple that most people know. Victory Tilly and Maharajah. Legends, that raced till they were 9-10 years. Italy has a landmark in Varenne. They are actually planning to make a big budget movie about this horse in the next year, which will be in worldwide cinema. This is what american harness racing lacks. And what the supertalents Muscle Hill and Somebeachsomewhere never got to be. The superstars they were ment to be. Recordbreakers!

'the big horse beat', so if Macdonnel had taken back, Gingras would've just sat on the outside while Art Official goes a soft 3/4. Macdonell had no choice but to try to circle him, but if I were the owners I would've decked Gingras after the race. Macdonell did nothing wrong: they just ganged up on the horse to get him beat by 1/2 a head.

saveus228 Obviously, you don't really know much about driving horses. You never 'wind' a horse in the first 1/4; and anyway, if he had left in 25, Pierce would've ground around him and then let
Gingras go and re-pulled leaving Macdonell sitting 3rd and at the mercy of the pace. As it was, Gingras force the 119 three quarters and then promptly just hung out there to send Beach 3 wide.
The whole thing was cooked up by Gingras + Pierce and the trainers. Shameful.

      Peter Stark
Once again You really don't seem to understand the racing concept here. If MacDonell was tucked in and they could get him boxed in then yes back the whole mile off and keep SBSW boxed in. That is not at all anywhere close to what went on here. SBSW was sitting second over and no other horse was close to being 3rd over (who could potentially swing 3 wide and box him in on the outside). He was getting a perfect trip. It would be a dumb move to back the pace off with SBSW sitting perfectly with cover! Why you might ask? Well simply put, in every race he ever raced in SBSW had/has an incredible burst of speed that none of the other horses could match so if they had backed off the race either 1. Bullville Powerful doesn't back off and goes to front (that's assuming he is not trying to "set up" the race as you claim) and then after he clears SBSW just goes by and wins. Senerio 2. Pierce backs off and for some crazy reason (let's once again BP sits just on outside, fixing race). MacDonell (well ok a top notch driver) smiles all the way around the track, sits covered up, and waits until they hit the top of the long Meadowlands stretch, then tips him 3 wide and not only does he win but he pulls away with his burst of speed. If at any time in the race they backed it off too much and horses from the back started coming, then MacDonell could have pulled 3 wide, but giving that situation they were backing off and his burst would have allowed him to quickly clear and he definitely still wins and probably still pulls away. Reality. MacDonell pulls the horse 3 wide when they are going to a half in 51.4. Watch the race, how fast did SBSW come his second quarter, he gained several lengths, was 3 wide still cleared. He used his top speed and kicker burst and the worst possible spot in the race and for no reason. You need to really start viewing the race accurately and seeing that MacDonell gave the horse a terrible drive (like I said before worst drive of century). To further aid about how bad this drive was, I will point out, if you have a horse that can leave like SBSW could and for some unknown reason you are going to go the half in 51 and change and you have the 2 hold starting out you would burst of the gate not sit back and then come 3 wide. The problem was MacDonell is not in their caliber of drivers, he had no idea what to really do, decided to float off the gate and then decide his gameplan. Stupid. Great drivers don't do that, or to correct myself, great drivers don't do that when they have the best horse in the race (and in this case probably ever), THEY MAKE OTHERS ADJUST TO THEIR GAMEPLAN!

@XxSodano Remember, that last half was run at the end of 2506m. The lead time was run in 1:06.4...for 906m. That is very fast. Saying that though neither Mr Feelgood or Auckland Reactor had difficult runs, but both were showing the effects of their heat performances (3 races in 14 days - 1700, 2100, 2500). Gingras had said before that he 'was gonna get the big horse beat'. He certainly did that. He left the gate with that longshot and could've dropped in 3rd and probably gotten 3rd place money which was probably still worth about $100,000. Instead, he ran on the outside to force Somebeachsomewhere 3 wide. In forty years of watching races, that was one of the most disgusting things I've ever seen...

+Peter Stark MacDonell is an average driver at best. He only drove the horse as he is friends with Brent. I can't think of any top driver that would have made the dumbass move to send a horse 3 wide when they hit the half in 51 and 4. It's one of the fastest half miles in history and he tips 3 wide. Experienced drivers would have had their watch on and realized how fast they were going and would know that Bullville Powerful would fade and then he could go 3 wide or clear and then he just goers on by. There was no need to go 3 wide with the fractions or worrying about getting boxed in as no one else was near. You make a valid point that the race was screwed up by Bullville Powerful. His owners dumped 100K to get him in and they probably send send him at all costs. Pierce did it perfect (unlike MacDonell) in that he was not letting the other horse get the lead and was going to keep him hung out for as long as he could. Pierce admitted that they needed to have things go wrong and get a break to beat SBSW. Never in a million years do I think he thought MacDonell would tip 3 wide going in 51.4 but he was sure going to take advantage of his stupidity. (if you didn't know the relationship between MacDonell and Brent McGrath you would be able to make a better argument that maybe MacDonell set the race up and had a ton of money on Art Official to win and exotic bets as well - not the case but better argument than the one you are making with people). This has been called the race of the decade (and deservedly so) but it more appropriately should be called "The dumbest drive of the century!!" It is a real shame that the horse has to have his record tarnished because of human error.

Things only changed when they put the slot machines in at the racetracks and the drivers got everything they asked for in return. I caught some big triactors up at Orangeville raceway knowing full well Brown would stiff all his 1:9 shots and run dead last. Unfortunately not much money was ever bet at that racetrack so I'd try to catch a one dollar triactor as many times there was never a 2 dollar triactor ticket depending on what came in with the 1:9 shot dead last driven by Doug Brown. At Greenwood when the fix was in they tried to set the race up for a horse to win and give him a perfect trip if the horse looked like he had a shot to win in the stretch they grabbed the reigns or make it look like they were whipping the horse but they weren't. Art Official was a good horse but not a great horse...a horse of his caliber doesnt go to the half in 51 and change and then still have any horse left to outduel SBSW in the stretch without some kind of wonder sauce in his system...look at the elim and then look at this race and tell me that horse wasnt juiced to the hill..all the great drive by Pierce..horrible drive by Paul comments make me wanna puke almost as much as Pierces arrogance in the interviews after the race...excuse the rant but i get more pissed off about this race as the years go by lol

Whipped the daylights out of that horse to win! I hate that! If the horse can't make it without a beating, leave him be!

They are not hitting the horse. Hitting the saddle pad or the racebike shaft to make a loud noise. So nothing like that.....I have seen horses come back with welts on them after a race, but that was years ago, and those driver/trainers were looked down at by others, and must never amounted to shit. @@pablovelazquez5666 Sam McKee' should have yelled at Macdonell to get that whip working coming to the tape. Macdonell fell asleep coming to the tape and forgot what the whip was for. In all the books on harness racing that I've read it says add 5 full lengths if the horse isn't whipped.

Karloo Mick Do some research. Beach was a monster. Art Official, while he couldn't handle the turns at Delaware, he still paced in 1:47. And Shadow Play was a fabulous race horse. You're entitled to your opinion, but name me a crop of 3 yr, olds with 3 great horses such as these. Guess what, you WON'T be able to.
