Found mine had previously been welded but was missing the heat shields.

If you can hold an air filter up to the light and see light through it, it's not filtering anything.
Oiled foam is the only filter that performs on par with a paper element while increasing flow, and those arent available for these, or most cars. K&N is snake oil JUNK.

Awesome video I just purchased a 1970 Mercedes-Benz 220 diesel I am in the process of trying to figure out how to install a injection pump and how to time it do you have a video of how to do that thank you👍

Make sure your timing chain is in good condition and aligns with the camshaft and crankshaft readings of top dead center first.
The pump has a mark and teeth on its front. One tooth is missing. If the mark aligns to where the missing tooth should be, it's on delivery. On all diesels except the 200d it's supposed to be installed on the engine set to 24 degrees before top dead center. On the 200d it's installed on 26 degrees before top dead center. Take off the valve cover to make sure it's on the right stroke, apparent by the markings of the camshaft. On the 220d it should also be on 24 degrees before aligning to the top dead center compression stroke position.
Now try to install the pump by connecting it with the vaccum pump shaft with that gear ring, not turning the pump in the process and ideally centered to the fine adjustment/installation long holes, so you can fine adjust the pump in each direction by turning it either left or right later.
To fine adjust, there are several methods, but the easiest would be to install everything else on the pump all the lines etc. (except the gas linkage, as it would be in the way). After turning the engine a few times, remove the line of the first cylinder and blow out the diesel of the line connector and turn the engine to about 40 degrees once again before top dead center in the compression stroke. Now keep turning the engine degree for degree by careful surveillance of the line connector until you see diesel rise once again. The moment you see it rise you are at delivery plus about 1 degree. So then look at the reading of your crankshaft and deduct about 1 degree to get your true somewhat accurate delivery value. If that accounts to ideally 26 degrees before top dead center, the timing should be right. If not, turn the pump either towards the engine (for earlier delivery) or away from the engine (for later delivery) until you get to 26 degrees true delivery.

They are just too thin , MB does not correct their design faults .Dont replace , just weld / reinforce them .

I can second the idea that K & N filters are junk. for cars. I ran a chassis dyno shop for over 9 years and I tested hundreds of cars before and after installing K & N filters. Every car tested LOST power with the new K & N replacement filter, except for one VW Corrado. Furthermore when servicing customer cars with K & N filters there was always a layer of dust in the intake plenum AFTER the filter, so the K & N filters are not as effective as OEM paper filters . If the K & N filter does not increase power, and the K & N filter does a poor job filtering air, then why use it?

Also the stock filter on the OM617 is absolutely huge. So it should have good performance already just by the amount of surface area to let air in.
